A1 Our birthday celebration. We don't sing, we just say all together: __________ it is your birthday. [clap 2 times] Celebrated. It's different enough that they enjoy it, and we don't have to worry about some kids being sung to & others not. #sstlap
  • ToddShriver Nov 9 @ 9:07 PM EST
#sstlap For me, getting Ts to use Google Classroom/Chromebooks everyday. In Indiana, the push is college and career readiness. Teaching Ss tech/research skills is important.

    Question #2 is up! #sstlap

Yes, our school is also in year one of chromebooks- great tool, but kids need to develop routines, ie charging! #sstlap

Q2: Small group discussion. Small group teaching. Small groups are not as threatening. 👍🏼👍🏼😊 #sstlap
  • kylelaurie Nov 9 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1 Recently I’ve been playing music in my room as Ss enter the room. #sstlap
  • cheffernan75 Nov 9 @ 9:10 PM EST
Engagement isn't the same as participation. You can be silent and still engaged in what it going on around you. But start small - get them to talk to 1-2 classmates. Build out from there. #sstlap
  • jmadlin001 Nov 9 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2 I ask Ss to blog and we also work in core groups. Shy Ss may be more willing to speak in a small group instead of in front of the whole class #sstlap
  • MrAllardSS Nov 9 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 OTA (on time activity) Ss start and finish in 1st 5 mins. Usually vocab related #sstlap
  • tamaraletter Nov 9 @ 9:11 PM EST
We taught Gr4 and Gr5 Ss how to create, rename, move, and share items in their Google Drive. It’s never to early to teach them digital organization, too! #sstlap

So true and a great way to see true learning. Seek out admin, BOE members, peers to push in and help. #sstlap

Great idea. We use Schoology to blog - working on making it part of our routine. #sstlap

A2 Popscicle Sticks. Ss only raise hands to ask ?s. Every Ss designed their own stick and have to answer/add to discussion when their stick is pulled #sstlap
  • dragonmark_101 Nov 9 @ 9:14 PM EST
For schools with chromebooks, digital collaboration is really good for introverts #quiet #sstlap
  • kris_vanduyne Nov 9 @ 9:15 PM EST
This becomes routine w/ practice- yes! Some Ts are frustrated when something new does not go well- that happens, just need to make it routine. #sstlap

    Question #4! #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Nov 9 @ 9:16 PM EST
A3: Matching stickers on a handout, Synonyms/Antonyms, line up oldest to youngest or tallest to shortest, random selector app, couple matches (Handel/Gretel)... #sstlap
  • ToddShriver Nov 9 @ 9:16 PM EST
#sstlap A3 Google Apps have changed Ss. Thanks to collaboration our quiet Ss have become more active through comments and sharing.
  • kris_vanduyne Nov 9 @ 9:16 PM EST
And practicing this skill to get kids to be specific in their responses takes time, but well worth it. Modeling! #sstlap
  • MrAllardSS Nov 9 @ 9:16 PM EST
Yes. Start from 1st day Ss have tablet. Now Ss think it is weird if we do not have 1 #sstlap

A3 like using question and answer for partner work. One has a question other has the answer. Match up and get to work. #sstlap
  • kris_vanduyne Nov 9 @ 9:18 PM EST
Warmup idea: while the student is working, assure them their response is great- gives them courage to share. #sstlap

Q1. To do list. We get our info & then I put our list on the board. Can’t start until I say the code word. I explain it all, say the code & set them free. #sstlap
  • kris_vanduyne Nov 9 @ 9:20 PM EST
    Question #5 #sstlap
  • teachNcoffee Nov 9 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: I’ve been using Nearpod & Edmodo for discussions. I would hate to be called on if I wasn’t ready or didn’t like talking out loud. #sstlap
  • kris_vanduyne Nov 9 @ 9:21 PM EST
Yes! Our students love to-do lists as it helps them to remember multiple steps. Plus, everyone likes to cross off completed items! 😀#sstlap

Nearpod allows Ts to see the indivial responses. Perfect way to encourage a student by telling them “wow, great answer, can you share?” #sstlap

    Question #6 #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Nov 9 @ 9:28 PM EST
A6: Stay on top of it. Getting behind makes it worse. Speaking from experience right now. #sstlap
