Hi! Tisha HS culinary Tr from SO Oregon excited to chat with the #XPLAP crew! Love spending time at our family cabin in the local mountains over the holidays!
Josh Stock, 6th grade Language Arts in Olathe, KS. I love everything, but especially family movie nights take on a holiday theme. So far we’ve done Elf and Home Alone. #xplap

Over the Holidays, well, I love to cook and play board games with family and friends!
Rise and shine #xplap! Noa from Israel. My fave thing for #Hanukkah (no actual holiday season here...) is eating Sufganiot - they're like doughnuts but no hole.
HELLO #XPLAP! I'm Adam - US His T in SC. Fav holiday activity is hanging lights and then driving around looking at them. We play agame where you have to call out 'lights on my side!'

Catherine, thanks for joining #XPLAP, it is a great community of teachers who kick butt everyday. Check out https://t.co/9r1XK8i0qt for more resources and ideas.
Patrick, Grade 4 teacher from Oshkosh, WI I enjoy reading and games with family over the holidays. Connecting w my brother and reliving our glory days w late night RBI baseball. #xplap
A1: I go to the clearance section of any store. Michael's is a good place lately. I try to find decorations or anything that can be used for fun. #xplap
A1: Dollar stores work well for me. I also borrow my old toys (Legos, etc) from home. Target usually has good deals on Play-Doh & cool board games. #XPLAP
I will be sure to check that out! I appreciate the time you put into sharing your resources. I hope to be able to reciprocate at some point in the future. #xplap
Ronald Fisher a 4th Grade Teacher I'm going to go with the music as being one of my favs. #XPLAP okay and the decorations even though they won't be up until Sat.
Hi Connie from Arcadia, California hop'skipping in and out the holiday #xplap chat tonight! 5th basketball game to attend tonight🏀 🎁
Fire place, roasted chestnuts, and spending time with my family!
A1: Must admit, AMAZON and I have a long standing relationship. While I have paid the check on every date we have been on, she has always proved to be good company and has never let me down! #XPLAP
A1: So many of my best ideas are born from desperation. Those moments when I know my lesson needs some help and I am desperate to find improvement. The #XPLAP community has been a lifesaver many times.
A1 I unwrap learning. During Rea Aloud I have Christmas Words that they have to transcribe in three or four languages We learn Christmas words in German, Spanish, and one other language (Ss still have to decide on 4th lang.) #XPLAP
Will do! I’m considering doing something similar with the purpose of cataloging the journey of some of my academic endeavors (gamification and VR design) #xplap
Ready to unwrap another Q #XPLAP?!
Q2: What special challenge could you create for your Ss to unwrap kindness not only during the holiday, but throughout the year?
A2 I like the way this question is phrased @tishrich it conjures up an idea of how I can get my Ss to buy into doing "Nice" things for others all year, thinking of how to make that into a badge! #XPLAP
a2) my daycare is doing a "giving tree" this year. Ss pick a good deed ornament from the tree, take it home and have to perform it. Then return the ornament with a picture for decoration. thinking of how to do in class. #xplap
A2: I try to ensure that all projects have a considerable element of empathy. This way students must consider more than just completing a task/project, but doing so in a manner that creates a positive impact through consideration of others. #XPLAP
A2: Always loved the idea of Paying it forward… Helps people spread kindness, while also reflecting on all the kindness that has been shared to them through others. #XPLAP
A2: Contest to see which Ss can do the most kind acts for other Ss. Winner gets bonus XP & possible unique item named after them! It then becomes a permanent part of the game for future years! #XPLAP
Ready to unwrap another Q #XPLAP?!
Q2: What special challenge could you create for your Ss to unwrap kindness not only during the holiday, but throughout the year?
A2: any number of local or global service project challenges - we have a sister city in Nicaragua as well as WI/Nicaragua Partners that have some opportunities #xplap
A2 There is a game @avantgame talked about called "Kill Them with Kindness" I keep meaning to try. Teams that don't know each other. Have to say something nice to "turn the other player". If its not a person playing they still get a compliment! #xplap
A2 Not being afraid of who you are, what you want to contribute. Its about setting those goals! Show Ss that if you can unwrap a struggle, then so can they. #xplap
A2 .@KathiSueSummers makes me think. We could or Ss could snap pics of others and share kind words about what they see or notice. Hang pics up in room. #XPLAP
All is well for me also. I was just transferred from being a sci T to helping out with English (big move, I know). On this note, any English Second Language (ESL?) Ts who use #gamification or #gbl here? Looking for advice on how to teach the ABC's. #xplap
I love this idea! Thanks for sharing. I give special XP and powers for for bringing in supplies during our food drive. It becomes a competition between classes.
Hey Carrie, been binge watching/listening to your YouTube vids for the last hour. Sooo grateful for your sharing! #XPLAP ps: enjoyed your conversation w/ @mrmatera today on #Wellplayedu
A2) I use a shout out wall where students can use post-its to acknowledgeeach other. Also, asking students to stop and think about the things they say and compare it to the negativity we see on a larger scale, thinking about how it all fits. #xplap
Eric! Thanks for watching and listening to Carrie and I today. Always honored when I hear from the #WellPlayedu community and my Youtube community as well. Thanks for supporting them both! @HeckAwesome was awesome today, and everyday! #XPLAP

A2 In the lunchroom for 2 third grade classes I assigned lunchroom table captains. Kids take turns being incharge of making sure tables are clean before they leave. They earn care cards #xplap
A2 as cheesy as it is implementing simple ice breaker type questions or challenges let Ss get to know each other and bond. This helps build relationships and not just for earning points. #xplap
A2: I have a “badge” that Ss can only give to other Ss if they help them or some other positive action. Need to invigorizie it. So far I have no takers. #XPLAP
A1: First, I have a principle of not paying for my supplies. If the school doesn't want to buy it, I'll be creative and manage without. I stick to my guns on this. If they give me the budget I will look in MaxStock - dollar stores (is that the phrase?) here in Israel. #xplap
A2 at 1st they left tables a mess trash everywhere but when i assigned table captains all their hands were in air to get picked & they felt proud when praised & given a care card for keeping their tables clean #xplap
A3: Love the idea of building anticipation through a surprise that is right in front of them, but wrapped… Maybe we should do just that… Wrapped lessons… Have a student choose one, and then teach that lesson that they unwrapped! #XPLAP
@supervxn
Here's an idea:
The ABC's with dice maybe ... um ... here's another idea that I am trying to get my students to decipher a message that I have on the board - they haven't figured it out yet. #XPLAP
It sounds like the "HEART" power in Captain Planet. Maybe it gives them a Cipher code that allows only them to see some special messages in the classroom... #XPLAP
A3: Sometimes I leave business card sized items in their lockers with a we Code to an event they maybe happening or I have my background on my computer advertising an upcoming event #xplap
A3: Recently started using @PearDeck with Google Slides. As such we are including review games and Kahoot into the lessons easier. We are building to a breakout being in the middle of the lesson, completely unknown to the kids. #XPLAP
My name is Kelly I love doing family transitions & doing kind things for others duringvthe holiday season. I create winter crafts with my SS to add to the holiday excitements #xplap
And since I am a science teacher maybe the box could “reproduce” when we teach asexual reproduction. They would then have to describe the contents. Thinking aloud here. #XPLAP
A3 my students are going to unwrap their next #SMART_Monster#wantallmonsters on St. Nicholas Day next week can’t wait to see their faces @SMART_Tech package came today to join the 3 Stooges. #XPLAP
A2: We have a game called The Dwarf and the Giant. It has many versions. The basic one is: everybody draws names, the name you get is your giant. As the dwarf, it's your responsibility to make their week great without them finding your identity. Most Ss just give candy. :-(#xplap
A3. Was just thinking it could be cool to have some type of secret message on the board and each day they learn a new part of a cypher to decode the message. #xplap
A4 Its not my tradition, but my principal has a "Cookies and Milk" just before we let out for break. Kids bring in the cookies and she gets the milk. Everyone eats and drinks and laughs... good times. #xplap
A3: You could saran wrap a bunch of items relating to a topic of study. As the students pass the ball around and the items drop out, they can explain the significance-if it’s at the end of a unit-or they can speculate about what the items mean. #XPLAP
A4: My math class always gets the Charlie Brown word problem challenge. Bunch of pain in the butt word problems that end in us watching the show. #XPLAP
A1: First, I have a principle of not paying for my supplies. If the school doesn't want to buy it, I'll be creative and manage without. I stick to my guns on this. If they give me the budget I will look in MaxStock - dollar stores (is that the phrase?) here in Israel. #xplap
A4: I just listed to the #wellplayededu podcast about ending the game and really love the idea of a “Top Scorer” leaderboard that rolls year to year. #XPLAP
A4 I would like to see the Ss transform the classroom with their original works, or bring in special items to decorate the room. Make it festive! #XPLAP
a4 I hand out a t shirt every year to students who unlock a certain clue, those who have won them still rock them form time to time and everyone ask what they are from #xplap
A4: I do a cultural craft every year just before break called a “Ojo De Dios” ( God’s eye) that has symbolism dating back to the Aztecs. Easy and fun to make - they always ask if we will do them #xplap
A3 a kindergarden class will be treated to winter themed story from me & they get to wear pjs. The ss invited me & their teacher accepted me. I created my Classroom book love ❤ #xplap
A4 Power of coming together. Its not just in holiday celebrations, but also life itself. Celebrating everything about the holidays is learning more about communication and building relationships. #xplap
Ingenious, and it goes along with so many elements. I can even put in some side quests. It might solidify some of my gaming elements. Thanks for the Advent Idea #XPLAP
A4 the #gamification#gbl tradition! Only a few Ts in Israel truly gamify their lessons. :-( I opened a FB group and already there's about 1,500 teachers that signed up. I try to teach them everything I learn from you guys! #xplap
A4) have had “breaking bread” parties where we have food, music, dancing and laughs. Want to start “House Wars” with shirts, games, and legacy for alumni. Academically, I usually do a museum that students come together to create and showcase. #xplap
A4 OMG. Could you even imagine a white elephant gift exchange with your class! There are so many reasons not to do it but I’m sure it would be hilarious. #xplap
A4 I pulled out a book of stories that my class several years ago put together. It was put together with the spiral bound and each student had brought a Christmas story ... Well worth the memories #XPLAP
A4: I had my 6th graders leave positive notes for my 7th graders when they had a test. I have saved some of my favorite. I want to continue this both ways. #XPLAP
we had a lit teacher who would have the students write some sort of story that she would bind together into a book for everyone. Get like 30 stories from your classmates. That was pretty cool. #xplap
RT @supervxn: A4 the #gamification#gbl tradition! Only a few Ts in Israel truly gamify their lessons. :-( I opened a FB group and already there's about 1,500 teachers that signed up. I try to teach them everything I learn from you guys! #xplaphttps://t.co/ZYh28MbrSB
A4: Not my tradition, but my school is well-known for being awesome in performing arts. During the holidays, the choir sings Christmas songs on the landing during a class period. The orchestra plays as well. I love it. ❤️#XPLAP

A4 I saw a tweet with WWE belts and said why not share mine the day of college graduation. Its important to celebrate how each one of us are CHAMPIONS! We have worked so hard to be where we are at today. Now that should be a top tradition! YOU! #xplap
Will put the names of the students who lead their classes on the leaderboard above their respective belt. They will likely hold them during games too. #XPLAP
A5: Love to play Shadows over Camelot with fam over breaks… Fun to work together to win over the boardgames… Also love the trader element… Keeps us all on our toes. #XPLAP
Its a Comedy Central show where celebrities become quite inebriated and then try to explain historic events. They have actors play out the scenes as described by the drunk celeb. #xplap
Wow looks so nice. My family likes to spend time at a big light shrine in our area. We get hot cocoa make smores at a fire pit & walk around to see beautiful light display
A5: One of our favorite games is ticket to ride. It would be fun to have multiple “locations” Ss could check out along with different ways to get there. Considering how to implement. #XPLAP
A5 Mexican Loteria! Its been a fun tradition in our familia. Bringing it to the classroom can not only make games fun, but also teach Ss a diff language which is Spanish. #xplap
A5) we love minute to win it games lately, especiallythe cup stack. I’ve used it with students as a brain break that they can “buy” into. Thinking of how could adapt the time constraints abd duel aspect. #xplap
a5) my family used to play spoons a lot, not sure how to incorporate that into a class setting. Maybe have to answer questions, once you get enough right you could get a spoon. Last team is out. #xplap
A5: My family never really played games, but we have been loving #explodingkittens (not as morbid as it sounds). I would steal the humor built into the cards (once again the games name makes it sound bad) #XPLAP
My 7 yr/old loves the "First Journey" edition. Had his cousin over the other day and I walked in on them totally engrossed in the board game. Without being told! #XPLAP
A5: Excellent Q! Actually looking for a board game right now to turn into my Israel's 70 Years of Inventions game. Can you plz share special board games? Looking for ones the Israeli kids don't know. #xplap
Maybe a road trip up to Wisconsin for some training in the ways of board games would be in order for the winter break… Who is with me! Come on now, calling all nerds… You know you want to come ;) #XPLAP
A5 My wifes family plays a game called Bubkis which is a dice game kind of like Yatzee but you can risk extra rolls but might lose all your points. #XPLAP
A6: You could put some easter eggs in these school concerts and plays that you prearrange with those teachers… Could be fun to see if students connect all the dots and find all the clues. #XPLAP
A5 We often do drawing games where everyone submits a few of the clues. Someone has to draw and get others to guess. We have used this in our class for concepts and vocab. #xplap
Hmm... in class you could turn your key concepts to cards like in Go Fish. If you get 4 of the same category you take a spoon. Does that sound right to you? #xplap
A5: We play Catan. I like the idea of having some sort of scarce resource that Ss have to trade to get a complete set. Would love to hear how others use a game mechanic like that? #XPLAP
A6: my middle schoolers can be a bit anti performance, but sometimes I can get them to do holiday carols in Spanish -at least jingle bells and feliz navidad #xplap
A5 Catan, Small World, Trains, Dominion - So many that we play, and so many elements that are part of the gaming element that I want to build into part of my classroom #XPLAP
A5 I hope to continue doing winter crafts with SS at school and every yr my kids make ginger bread houses they invite a friend to join. We make melted snow man treats too #xplap
A6) the holidays feels like a natural fit with celebration of Students for different categories. Making sure it fits with the storyline. Maybe even items only available to purchase and use at specific times. #xplap
@tishrich@mrmatera I really like the “nope” card. Could be a cool item for players to have in their cue during a duel/battle challenge where players can play a variety of cards. #xplap
Naturally I thought of @settlersofcatan , but the rules seem a little too complicated for me. Forgot Ticket to Ride is a board game! I just played with the app :-) #xplap
My daughter made a iteration of Apples to Apples with favorite family memories. I have been thinking about how to do the same thing with my classes. #XPLAP
I know I missed this entire chat, but my family enjoys that game too. I like you're idea about Ss checking out "multiple locations." I really need to go back and read the #XPLAP chats... or find time to join in!
New game for Christmas @TifaniF94 but only if it promises to be hours and hours of plotting resulting in the oldest childe winning like always ... Thanks @mrmatera#XPLAP

Last Q of the night! #XPLAP
What is your favorite holiday movie and how could you unwrap it's magic and create a fun experience in your class based on it's storyline?
My daughter made a iteration of Apples to Apples with favorite family memories. I have been thinking about how to do the same thing with my classes. #XPLAP
Just at the top of my head: Maybe resources could be key concepts. The numbers on the board will link to key topics. You will be able to build a city or a road on that tile only if you have a matching concept to the topic. Let's brainstorm on this... We'll get it for sure! #xplap
a6) rudolph the red nosed reindeer. One S could have a "red nose" and not be allowed to play in the game. Some how they could pass the nose to another S #xplap
I did a bio project once where the red nose was a recessive gene based on a mutation from a great great grandparent... I think there was incest involved at some point... maybe not school appropriate... #xplap
A7) how do I make Die Hard work?? Other favorites are about families coming together. Home Alone can be reminiscent of a breakoutedu situation. Perhaps Die Hard 3 also fits the mold, though it wasn’t holiday based. 🤔#xplap
A7: Christmas Vacation. It’s about family coming together despite differences. Classes could compete to have the best holiday feast/gathering to spread good cheer. #XPLAP
A7 The Polar Express. It can promote Ss the creativity and importance of imagination and adventure. It can help them seek a journey and learn from it. #xplap
A7 My fav holiday movie is Elf. Maybe we could do a game where solving puzzles could move Buddy along the path "through the seven levels of the candy cane forest, past the sea of twirly-swirly gumdrops, etc. #xplap
A7: I like Rudolf the claymation or what ever they were made out of… How I could base something on it, have a “island of misfit items” they are broken items that only kind of work… Once a player owns them, if they roll high enough item works forever! #XPLAP
