Q2: ASCD's Whole Child tenants are defined in 5 components, the 1st focuses on Health. What are ways that you support the overall health & physical wellness of your students? Why is this important? #ECEchat
A2: Embedded movement and motor development throughout the day and intentional teaching of healthy choices - handwashing, food choices, etc. All of this fuels little brains to grow and develop! #ecechat
#WholeChild means we nurture the WHOLE child, not just their academic development, this translates to ---> Maslow before Bloom | “You can’t do the Bloom stuff until you take care of the Maslow stuff.”#ECEchat#ASCDCEL
A2: I am looking forward to our next unit on choices. We explore all the choices we make everyday and how they impact our health and wellness. Confining health to one unit isn’t the goal, but the focus on growth is. #ECEchat
A2 I encourage healthy habits by actively participating in Boost Up/Gym with my students. I also add a healthy recipe or activity in my monthly newsletter home to parents. #ECEchat
RT Q3: The next Whole Child tennent identified by ASCD is Safety. How do you help your students know and feel that they are safe in your classroom and at your school? #ECEchat
A2: Nutrition, exercise, emotional regulation; In Head Start we cook which models good food choices & we serve snacks to support further knowledge of healthy foods; Lots of play & recess for strong muscles & lots of breathing and calming techniques for emotional support #ecechat
A2. It's important because, children who "enter school healthy and learn about and practice a healthy life" have a greater chance of thriving in other areas of their life, not just today but for the long haul. @ASCD#ecechat#ascdcel#ascdilc | https://t.co/IjHthsOLnN
Q3: The next Whole Child tennent identified by ASCD is Safety. How do you help your students know and feel that they are safe in your classroom and at your school? #ECEchat
#ECEchat A2. Ss need to hear it from their teachers the importance of mental and physical well being...I spend my form time in the morning on this... Building strategies for self help , confidence and mindfulness
RT Q3: The next Whole Child tennent identified by ASCD is Safety. How do you help your students know and feel that they are safe in your classroom and at your school? #ECEchat
A3: Getting to know them by name, letting them know they belong and that they matter, fostering their courage and confidence, all of those things are important.
Singing with my kiddos helps, too; they are DRAWN to the ukulele, for sure.
https://t.co/FQ5mCUQwv7#ecechat
A3: classroom community. I want kids to know I love and care for them and my job is to keep us all safe. Through our relationships we develop that trust. It can be hard when littles come with so many experiences, but it is 🔑#ecechat
A3: I can think of so many ways that we promote safety in the EC classroom but I always loved using the @ConsciousD safekeeper rituals. This supports making safe choices, positive behavior, and a safe classroom climate. #ecechat
A3: Safety is a big part of @ConsciousD which we use. Ss need to feel safe to learn. We talk each day about how the T keeps them safe; Ss keep our classroom safe and ask Ss the ways they can do it. Safety is always part of our daily promise. #ecechat
A3. We build a community of safety by discussing ways to keep the classroom safe, reviewing those ‘rules’ daily, committing to them, then reflecting on the day and setting goals for the next day! #ECEChat
Q3: The next Whole Child tennent identified by ASCD is Safety. How do you help your students know and feel that they are safe in your classroom and at your school? #ECEchat
A3 The first step I take to make my Ss feel safe is making the Ss in classroom feel at home when they are at school. I want my Ss to know me as a person who cares for them & loves them. I find that once they understand that, they begin to trust me. #ecechat
Q4: ASCD's 3rd Whole Child tennent is Engaged saying, "Each student is actively engages in learning & connected to the school and broader community". What are some ways that you do this? #ECEchat
A3. ASCD explains safety as, "Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults."
Some practical ways to do this daily is doing the @ConsciousD Safe Keeper Ritual & making Commitments for making safe choices. #ecechat
A4. Beyond the classroom visit, engaging with students in the learning, asking questions, observing play and interactions with academic and social learning. #ECEChat
Educating the child in all areas - social emotional development, health, safety, creating problem solvers and critical thinkers, instilling a love of learning, supporting relationship building...reaching beyond academics #ecechat
A4 Two major keys for Engagement for Early Learners: Novelty & Variety!!!! Keeping materials in centers such as dramatic play Novel and Varying them is a huge way of sparking engagement and learning! #ECEchat
Q4: ASCD's 3rd Whole Child tennent is Engaged saying, "Each student is actively engages in learning & connected to the school and broader community". What are some ways that you do this? #ECEchat
A4: I believe that creating meaningful helper jobs within the classroom for EVERY child increases motivation and helps nurture the school "family". Every child matters as a part of the whole. #ecechat
A4: @Seesaw helps create the connection of school, family & student-the Trifecta. My school does Impact nights for families 2 come and visit and participate in different areas of learning-SEL, Academics, community outreach/assistance. School is not an island unto itself #ecechat
A1 Educating the child in all areas - social emotional development, health, safety, creating problem solvers and critical thinkers, instilling a love of learning, supporting relationship building...reaching beyond academics #ECEchat
As an administrators do this by building a relationship with the child every chance I get drop off/pick up , lunch duty, when I see them in the hall as I stop in classrooms #ECEchat
RT Q4: ASCD's 3rd Whole Child tennent is Engaged saying, "Each student is actively engages in learning & connected to the school and broader community". What are some ways that you do this? #ECEchat
A4. Engaged learners are LEARNING!
Another key to engagement is "Knowing Your Who" as @SchlechtyCenter teaches = Knowing students' likes & dislikes, being in tune with their unique interests & what makes them tick! #ecechat#workingonthework
A4. This makes me think of the place-based learning model we use in #NaturePreK - we use the everyday experiences and the environment around us to serve as the context for learning & integrate the standards into the experience. #ECEChat
A4: Even the littlest learners can help; here are some of the jobs that our students lined up to do when I was at my preK-3rd grade campus. These helping opps engaged and empowered; service with a smile was our mantra! #ecechat
A2 By bringing the outside world &/or community into my classroom OR by bringing my Ss to the outside world &/or community. Our outdoor learning spaces, community reading partners & field trips to local historical spots are just a few things that happen at #WoodsonK#ECEchat
A4. Being in a K-5 elementary school has also allowed the PreK students to better connect with the rest of the district - both thru my own experiences as a teacher connecting with K-5 teachers, but also Ss connecting with K-5 classrooms. #ECEChat
Q5: Supported is the next Whole Child tenant explained as, "Each student has access to personalized learning & is supported by qualified, caring adults." Share how you personalize learning for your students and examples of supportive, caring adults in your school. #ECEchat
Q4: ASCD's 3rd Whole Child tennent is Engaged saying, "Each student is actively engages in learning & connected to the school and broader community". What are some ways that you do this? #ECEchat
A4: Provide opportunities for open-ended learning centers and play. This allows active learning but also gives Ts the opportunity to enter the children's worlds and connect with their interests. #ecechat
Q4: ASCD's 3rd Whole Child tennent is Engaged saying, "Each student is actively engages in learning & connected to the school and broader community". What are some ways that you do this? #ECEchat
Q5: We can personalize learning for each child by ensuring multisensory approaches - visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc. But also, we have to use data to know where our Ss are to make the best instructional decisions to nudge them forward. #ecechat
A4 By bringing the outside world &/or community into my classroom OR by bringing my Ss to the outside world &/or community. Our outdoor learning spaces, community reading partners & field trips to local historical spots are just a few things that happen at #WoodsonK#ECEchat
A5. Differentiation! Create fluid small groups and use data to make changes. Help each child feel and be important. What each child needs to be successful is different, it is okay to change it up! #ECEchat
A5. When the standards are integrated into the everyday experiences the students have as a classroom community, everyone is able to be included and has a voice in determining the topics that are focused on. #ECEChat
RT: Q5: Supported is the next Whole Child tennent explained as, "Each student has access to personalized learning & is supported by qualified, caring adults." Share how you personalize learning for your students and examples of supportive, caring adults in your school. #ECEchat
A5 One huge way is through Culturally Relevant Teaching! It's a critical aspect of supporting ALL learners! Check out this podcast: How Do We Create Equitable Learning Environments? #WholeChild Education https://t.co/7bqH0vQj59 | #ECEchat#ascdcel#ascdilc@ascd
#ecechat A5. Fair is when Ss are involved with decision making , when the process and approach to teaching and learning is transparent and they feel the ownership
A4 creating an environment that allows for student choice through all aspects of the day creates students who feel valued, empowered and engaged. #ecechat
Q5: Part 1: relationship building allows T 2 know what a S is interested in; use it to let the world open up & allow exploration of the subject for each one's interest. #ecechat
RT: Q5: Supported is the next Whole Child tennent explained as, "Each student has access to personalized learning & is supported by qualified, caring adults." Share how you personalize learning for your students and examples of supportive, caring adults in your school. #ECEchat
Q6: The final ASCD Whole Child tenant is Challenged. How do you insure all of your students are challenged & prepared for success while you teach them and beyond the year as your student? #ECEchat
A5: I can't say it enough, creating a learning environment that allows for open-ended learning centers & unstructured play. If done purposefully, ichildren can play with materials that meet their needs. The caring adult makes self available & follows children's cues. #ecechat
Q5: Supported is the next Whole Child tenant explained as, "Each student has access to personalized learning & is supported by qualified, caring adults." Share how you personalize learning for your students and examples of supportive, caring adults in your school. #ECEchat
A4. It's important to know who is in your classroom community. We are asking families to share their favorite fall traditions & celebrations to display on our family wall. This has helped me learn more about the students, and provided the Ss with a visual prompt to share #ECEChat
A5: The learning space is so important for not only learning, but also self-compassion and care. We set up Social Stations to give Ss a chance to foster their #SEL skills.
https://t.co/a1ohTXgBq8#ecechat
A5 by tracking S data from a variety of sources we are better able to support our Ss. Currently 14/23 of my K students receive services from other qualified staff My SPED, ELL, Speech, OT, DHH and Advanced Academic and GenEd students all have very unique paths to success #EceChat
A6. Raising the bar, and holding it high enough so all students can see it and reach it. Including parents as a prominent voice in the learning is also essential. #ECEChat
Q6: Place challenges before them that you know they can do, but that they may not realize or believe they can do; support when needed then watch the growth occur and the confidence that they gain from it. #ecechat
A6. To ensure success beyond just the school year, you have to focus on all the skills (not just academics) necessary to be successful, contributing adults - social emotional skills as well as "soft" skills such as resiliency, collaboration, communication, etc. #ECEChat
A5: The learning space is so important for not only learning, but also self-compassion and care. We set up Social Stations to give Ss a chance to foster their #SEL skills.

RT Q6: The final ASCD Whole Child tennent is Challenged. How do you insure all of your students are challenged & prepared for success while you teach them and beyond the year you teach them? #ECEchat
#ecechat A6. Allowing , enabling and encouraging the SS to set their targets and compete against themselves....set SMART goals which they need to revisit...as a result their get into the habit of constantly bettering their own performance. And the teacher can mentor and coach
Q6: The final ASCD Whole Child tenant is Challenged. How do you insure all of your students are challenged & prepared for success while you teach them and beyond the year as your student? #ECEchat

This is beautiful! I saw a teacher who sent home paper leaves to families & they wrote the word "family" in their home language. It's so simple, but such a beautifully powerful & respectful way to honor our families'. #ECEchat
A4. It's important to know who is in your classroom community. We are asking families to share their favorite fall traditions & celebrations to display on our family wall. This has helped me learn more about the students, and provided the Ss with a visual prompt to share #ECEChat
A3. It's important to teach Ss how to assess for safety themselves & then the skills to respond accordingly. Assuring Ss that they are safe is limiting, they need to (and are capable) of identifying what feels safe & what doesn't & learning what steps to take if not safe #ECEChat
A6 I set individual goals for each of my Ss in the areas of Math, Reading, Social Emotional (and Language for my ELL Ss) I discuss these goals with parents are conferences. It is lot of work, but helps to keep myself, the parents and students accountable for Ss success. #ECEchat
