A1: Before I would have my students chat about text but mostly reflect only with themselves using BHH. We have added the process of discussion with peer groups using TQE as a structure and the personal connections have grown. #DisruptingThinking #BookCampPD

  • Mr_Schellenberg Jan 6 @ 7:38 PM EST
A1: Four key disruptions that were put in place in September of 2018 were daily silent reading, no related assignment for independent reading, with ongoing student reading conferences, and students chose the books. #BookCampPD #literacy #engchat
  • emilyfranESL Jan 6 @ 7:38 PM EST
eye opening YES!!!! Love this method! #bookcamppd

A1. Another transacting idea: "What's in Your Head" What surprised me? What did the author think you already knew? What changed, challenged, or confirmed your thinking? Have students create bookmarks like Alessandra's pg. 67 #BookCampPD
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jan 6 @ 7:39 PM EST
A1. Chart from pg 136 shows what happens when only 10 minutes a day is added to a student's reading. Transacting: Tell me what is happening now in your book. Tell me about the person telling the story. What have you learned so far about the character (or event)?#BookCampPD

My read aloud is so very very important to all of this work! #bookcamppd
  • MrsStaub307 Jan 6 @ 7:40 PM EST
A1: all different reasons for reading. When reading for pure enjoyment as is necessary at all ages I don't believe in disrupting reading. What is the purpose. Set a goal if needed for discovery. Must have a purpose. #BookCampPD
    • emilyfranESL Jan 6 @ 7:35 PM EST
Q1: Read to TRANSACT We're encouraged to disrupt reading practice! How would this look or sound in your classroom or personal reading life? #bookcampPD
  • GrayMttrs Jan 6 @ 7:40 PM EST
I plan on twisting the traditional dialectical journal. I'll provide Ss w/a Give & Get Journal. In the Give section, they'll record impactful text (extract). In the Get section, they'll respond with thoughts, questions, impact, connections, and emotions (transact). #bookcamppd
  • kathyiwanicki Jan 6 @ 7:40 PM EST
A2.. I just finished Out of MyMind for my third graders..it so disrupted their thinking #bookcamppd
  • LiteracyChef Jan 6 @ 7:41 PM EST

    In reply to @emilyfranESL
  • MrMarkHeintz Jan 6 @ 7:41 PM EST
A1: BHH allows students to read for their learning and read different texts. Then they can come back and have a discussion with their peers about how the text impacted them. They can multiply their learning with the same questions. #bookcamppd
  • emilyfranESL Jan 6 @ 7:41 PM EST
it's just something powerful about taking the text and applying it to personal experiences #BookCampPD

  • Mr_Schellenberg Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
A1: Students did record the number of pages they read on a daily basis in class (building up their reading speed), their reading rate was calculated (students recorded this, not for grades) and conferences moved from teacher-led to student-led. #BookCampPD #literacy #engchat
  • BridgetGengler Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
A1: In my classroom- student choice when reading on own. We have lit circles for them to share their thoughts. We have book talks and Ss create @booksnaps. For me, personally I love to blog or create #booksnaps. #bookcampPD
  • irina_mcgrath Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
We use BHH at the middle school level too. What a great strategy! https://t.co/FgdYwoJONS #bookcamppd
  • kathyiwanicki Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
Educated was a personal disruptive thinking book #bookcamppd
  • MichelleReadWPB Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
A1 In my classroom, the 5 W’s are covered, but then the personalization of how the book impacts the reader’s head and heart, well that’s when the power of reading enters the room. #bookcampPD
  • emilyfranESL Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
It's great for HS students too! #bookcamppd
    In reply to @irina_mcgrath
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jan 6 @ 7:42 PM EST
Yes! Yes! Yes! Discuss with their peers rather than the teacher leading. #BookCampPD

A2 Everglade City, FL is near by and when we 1st moved here I wanted to learn more about the history of that area and Smallwood's Store. This book changed my perception of life in the Everglades. #BookCampPD
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jan 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
A2. This book by Ron Clark was one I read much too near the end of my time as a principal. It is a game changer and I wish I would have learned from his perception of "riders on the bus" much earlier. #BookCampPD
  • emilyfranESL Jan 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
I need to get this one! What did you like about it?!? #BookCampPD
    In reply to @kathyiwanicki
  • GrayMttrs Jan 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
A2: My 8th grade students read The Help! It completely changes their thinking. They realize they have power, even at their age. #bookcamppd
  • Mr_Schellenberg Jan 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
A1: One disruption to our English classes was holding silent reading as sacred. Another was having daily book talks that were initially teacher-led, but became student-led. #BookCampPD #literacy #engchat
  • MichelleReadWPB Jan 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
A1 Making a similar chart this week to post #BookCampPD
  • kathyiwanicki Jan 6 @ 7:43 PM EST
It was an amazing story about a life I didn’t think could exist in the US. #bookcamppd
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jan 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
A2. This book by @HeidiHayesJacob (1997) shifted my focus as a principal away from discipline, toward being a learning leader/curriculum/assessment. Our admin team followed and shifted the District toward a close examination of what was being taught. #BookCampPD
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jan 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
A2. A year ago, when we were going to Key West for the first time, I bought these two books so I could learn more about the historical aspects of this interesting city. Now Key West is our favorite place to go visit. #BookCampPD
  • _on11 Jan 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
A2: Not the last book, but #tlap validated my mindset and approach to school. For so many years, I believed that I was doing things the wrong way because I was having fun. With each page I turned, I realized that my critics were the ones that were mistaken. #bookcamppd
    • emilyfranESL Jan 6 @ 7:40 PM EST
Q2: Reading SHOUD disrupt our thinking. Share the last book you read that reshaped/changed something about you? or a lesson that led students to change something about themselves? #BookcampPD
  • kruevans Jan 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
A2: Carve out time in class for Ss to read and write, and talk about what they've read and written. It's simple, but it takes courage to shut up and shift the cognitive load onto the Ss. But that's the only way for it to happen. #BookcampPD
  • Mr_Schellenberg Jan 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
A1: We still have too much focus on “efferent” or reading for extraction both with our whole class texts and our independent texts, but we are moving toward more of an “aesthetic” focus (Rosenblatt), with a deeper understanding of writing moves. #BookCampPD #literacy #engchat
  • 2ndGradeMama Jan 6 @ 7:44 PM EST
A2: “The Hate U Give” it made me think as a white woman about how my friends of other races are treated and how can I work to help reduce the racial tensions and prejudices. #BookcampPD

Q3: How do you share with your students and/or colleagues the value and interest in reading? #bookcampPD

A2 I am currently reading @BreneBrown’s #daretolead & my mind is working overtime with new ideas. It’s not about the title your serve in, it’s about leading w/ your whole heart. As an educator I strive for this. #Bookcamppd
  • Mr_Schellenberg Jan 6 @ 7:45 PM EST
A1: Having key passages read as part of our book talks (by the teacher and later, by students) disrupted our reading practice, focusing on an appreciation of the use of words. #BookCampPD #literacy #engchat
  • StephDill92 Jan 6 @ 7:45 PM EST
A2: I read chapter 6 from @cpoole27 book uNforgettable. The chapter is entitled Balance and that is #myoneword for the year. It disrupted my thinking and gave me a more defined path to support my day to day work. #bookcamppd

  • Mr_Schellenberg Jan 6 @ 7:46 PM EST
A2: A key insight from Beers & Probst’s Disruptive Thinking is that initial questions after a reading should lead to dialogic (multiple answers), not monologic (one answer) responses. Students should also raise questions. #BookCampPD #literacy #engchat

  • mrbgilson Jan 6 @ 7:47 PM EST
