Hello everyone. Steph Dill, elementary SPED T in Colorado. Trying to get my computer booted up so I can multi tweet with #BookCampPD and #teachpos. My phone just isn't going to cut it.
Hi! Derrick from Aurora (Ontario, Canada). Long-time high school English teacher and new technology-enabled learning and teaching consultant. #bookcamppd
Hello! Sara here from Texas. Checking in while I watch the Bears game and prepare to return to work tomorrow. I'm ready to get back to my kiddos! #BookCampPD

Hi @mjjohnson1216 I have been dying to move Disruptive Thinking up to the top of my reading list. Finished it in two days and loved it. So relevant and helpful. #bookcamppd
Q1: Read to TRANSACT
We're encouraged to disrupt reading practice!
How would this look or sound in your classroom or personal reading life?
#bookcampPD
A1: Before I would have my students chat about text but mostly reflect only with themselves using BHH. We have added the process of discussion with peer groups using TQE as a structure and the personal connections have grown. #DisruptingThinking#BookCampPD
Q1: Read to TRANSACT

#bookcampPD
A1 Read to share in my world! Instead of just reading the words, share your learning with others and distrust the status quo. Make graphics and structure reading to share with others. #bookcamppd
A1: Four key disruptions that were put in place in September of 2018 were daily silent reading, no related assignment for independent reading, with ongoing student reading conferences, and students chose the books. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A1. Another transacting idea:
"What's in Your Head"
What surprised me?
What did the author think you already knew?
What changed, challenged, or confirmed your thinking?
Have students create bookmarks like Alessandra's pg. 67
#BookCampPD
A1. Chart from pg 136 shows what happens when only 10 minutes a day is added to a student's reading.
Transacting:
Tell me what is happening now in your book.
Tell me about the person telling the story.
What have you learned so far about the character (or event)?#BookCampPD
Q2: Reading SHOUD disrupt our thinking.
Share the last book you read that reshaped/changed something about you? or a lesson that led students to change something about themselves? #BookcampPD
A1: all different reasons for reading. When reading for pure enjoyment as is necessary at all ages I don't believe in disrupting reading. What is the purpose. Set a goal if needed for discovery. Must have a purpose. #BookCampPD

I plan on twisting the traditional dialectical journal. I'll provide Ss w/a Give & Get Journal. In the Give section, they'll record impactful text (extract). In the Get section, they'll respond with thoughts, questions, impact, connections, and emotions (transact). #bookcamppd
A1: BHH allows students to read for their learning and read different texts. Then they can come back and have a discussion with their peers about how the text impacted them. They can multiply their learning with the same questions. #bookcamppd
A1: Students did record the number of pages they read on a daily basis in class (building up their reading speed), their reading rate was calculated (students recorded this, not for grades) and conferences moved from teacher-led to student-led. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A1: In my classroom- student choice when reading on own. We have lit circles for them to share their thoughts. We have book talks and Ss create @booksnaps.
For me, personally I love to blog or create #booksnaps. #bookcampPD
A1 In my classroom, the 5 W’s are covered, but then the personalization of how the book impacts the reader’s head and heart, well that’s when the power of reading enters the room. #bookcampPD

A2 Everglade City, FL is near by and when we 1st moved here I wanted to learn more about the history of that area and Smallwood's Store. This book changed my perception of life in the Everglades. #BookCampPD
A2. This book by Ron Clark was one I read much too near the end of my time as a principal. It is a game changer and I wish I would have learned from his perception of "riders on the bus" much earlier. #BookCampPD
A1: One disruption to our English classes was holding silent reading as sacred. Another was having daily book talks that were initially teacher-led, but became student-led. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2. This book by @HeidiHayesJacob (1997) shifted my focus as a principal away from discipline, toward being a learning leader/curriculum/assessment. Our admin team followed and shifted the District toward a close examination of what was being taught. #BookCampPD
A2. A year ago, when we were going to Key West for the first time, I bought these two books so I could learn more about the historical aspects of this interesting city. Now Key West is our favorite place to go visit. #BookCampPD
A2: Not the last book, but #tlap validated my mindset and approach to school. For so many years, I believed that I was doing things the wrong way because I was having fun. With each page I turned, I realized that my critics were the ones that were mistaken. #bookcamppd
Q2: Reading SHOUD disrupt our thinking.
Share the last book you read that reshaped/changed something about you? or a lesson that led students to change something about themselves? #BookcampPD
A2: Carve out time in class for Ss to read and write, and talk about what they've read and written. It's simple, but it takes courage to shut up and shift the cognitive load onto the Ss. But that's the only way for it to happen. #BookcampPD
A1: We still have too much focus on “efferent” or reading for extraction both with our whole class texts and our independent texts, but we are moving toward more of an “aesthetic” focus (Rosenblatt), with a deeper understanding of writing moves. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2: “The Hate U Give” it made me think as a white woman about how my friends of other races are treated and how can I work to help reduce the racial tensions and prejudices. #BookcampPD
Q2: Reading SHOUD disrupt our thinking.
Share the last book you read that reshaped/changed something about you? or a lesson that led students to change something about themselves? #BookcampPD
A2 I am currently reading @BreneBrown’s #daretolead & my mind is working overtime with new ideas. It’s not about the title your serve in, it’s about leading w/ your whole heart. As an educator I strive for this. #Bookcamppd
A1: Having key passages read as part of our book talks (by the teacher and later, by students) disrupted our reading practice, focusing on an appreciation of the use of words. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2: I read chapter 6 from @cpoole27 book uNforgettable. The chapter is entitled Balance and that is #myoneword for the year. It disrupted my thinking and gave me a more defined path to support my day to day work. #bookcamppd
A2: Innovator's Mindset by @gcouros made me rethink my ability to be a leader in my school from a classroom teacher's position. Has given me a way to model for my Ss how to lead without being the head cheese ;) #BookCampPD
Q2: Reading SHOUD disrupt our thinking.
Share the last book you read that reshaped/changed something about you? or a lesson that led students to change something about themselves? #BookcampPD
Oh my gosh..I talk about it, all the time..all the time. I keep track of the book I am reading and the # of books read. It is part of our culture. #bookcamppd
A2: Both Tara Westover’s Educated and Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime teach the value of perseverance and following one’s own beliefs despite the environment. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2: A key insight from Beers & Probst’s Disruptive Thinking is that initial questions after a reading should lead to dialogic (multiple answers), not monologic (one answer) responses. Students should also raise questions. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2: I read chapter 6 from @cpoole27 book uNforgettable. The chapter is entitled Balance and that is #myoneword for the year. It disrupted my thinking and gave me a more defined path to support my day to day work. #bookcamppd
A2: I just read Girl, Wash your face by Rachel Hollis and I am reading Be Real by Tara Martin. Each are pushing and motivating me to be better. My students got first hand experience with point of view and perspective when we read The True Story of Three Little Pigs. #BookCampPD
A2: We explored different texts focusing on refugees, with students having to “reset” their opinion after reading each text, showing how information can influence the opinion of a reader. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A2: As a class we read Restart and kids realized the power of choices and change. I just read the Remember Balloons and the personal connections I realized were very powerful. My 8s will be doing a final project on Social Justice...we are preparing with books. #BookCampPD

Q1: in my personal reading this looks like reading more diverse book to me understand the hardships of the families I teach. In my classroom it looks like consciously and consistently adding diverse books to my classroom library. #BookCampPD
Q1: Read to TRANSACT
We're encouraged to disrupt reading practice!
How would this look or sound in your classroom or personal reading life?
#bookcampPD
A3: I'm careful to only be positive about reading, also I try to let Ss have choice in their books and I will do book talks about what I'm reading in my own life! #bookcampPD
A2: Reading P. Rothfuss’ novels helped me have a deeper awareness of character development and the use of stories within stories for multiple purposes. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A3: the teachers in my hallway recently started posting the book they are currently reading for the kids to see outside our classroom doors and for other teachers to get new ideas about great books! #BookCampPD
uNforgettable is a . fantastic book, @cpoole27 really provides so much inspiration #weteachun , I am honored to be writing one of the books in the series :) #bookcamppd

@GrayMttrs, @StephDill92, @cpoole27, @cpoole27
A3: Modelling reading (silent and oral) in class is one strategy. Sharing reading lists, reading recs, and my previous/current/future book choices are other effective strategies. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A3: Making reading time and daily book talks sacred in class our other ways to communicate the importance of reading to students. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
A3: Engaging in informal discussion with teachers in course teams and the English department is a great way emphasize the importance of reading and feed each others’ interests. #BookCampPD#literacy#engchat
Love the idea of student created bookmarks to capture essence and remind them - reading is so much more than finding answers and evidence and summarizing.#BookCampPD

A3: I make sure to establish reading as THE priority in our classroom. We read every single day. No exceptions. That time is sacred! "Never a day without a page." #bookcamppd
A2: I just finished Piecing Me Together by @ReneeAuthor - it continued the process of helping me to reshape my understanding/perspective. Reading it helped me to understand a little more and want to find ways to do better for my Ss. So thankful for books like this! #BookCampPD

Rachelle, I listened to your podcast this moorning that you posted in the voxer group. You have so much going on. I'm excited to read the other books in the #WeTeachuN series. I really enjoyed chapter 6 - I will get to the rest soon. #BookCampPD
A3. I think @ChouinardJahant created an "over the moon" idea when she made this bulletin board. Sure sets the path for lead learners in her building to begin their journey!! #BookCampPD
A3. I tweet or retweet interesting information about books. I created this template for educators to use in order to post what book they're reading outside their door. #BookCampPD
A3: When #disruptingthinking came out I told everyone about it. I would bring them my students thought logs to see the deeper thinking going on. We share our reading experiences either with shared text or at least conversations. #BookCampPD
A3: posting all the books book covers I read aloud outside our classroom. I also have created #BogerReads signs for all the staff at my school so we can display what we are all reading. Both have been powerful for me and my Ss. #BookCampPD
A3 I have lots of books in my room, I am always sharing out . books with PLN and joining in book studies, inviting others to join, and sitting down and reading with students #bookcamppd
Looking forward to reading Number the Stars aloud using the BHH anchor chart. Stop and think. Life changing for my decade old difference makers. #BookCampPD
A3. When some special event is drawing near, I share graphics and links for educators to get more information to see if they would like to participate. Register here --> https://t.co/fgMDVXpUt6#BookCampPD
A3. My interest is reading is crystal clear as is evident by the #BookCampPD chat and https://t.co/S5pzTtywY8 corresponding website.
If there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know.

I like how Beers and Probst had to simplify the Book, Head, Heart description so that students (and teachers) could understand the intention. Having kids make personal connections and ask questions is key (and much more important than a character's name or a date). #bookcamppd
I want my students learn about themselves and the world around them. Even if the text didn’t move them or work for them, hopefully they learn why it didn’t work or what the author didn’t do. #BookCampPD
A3: By bringing up my reading in daily conversations (when applicable!)-freely sharing insights & info that I’m learning/experiencing in my reading with those around me... & offering to let them borrow my book/help them get connected on Twitter so they can read too! #BookCampPD
I think this is something Ts forget must be modelled & taught. Just saying go forth and read does not prepare our students for the literacy world they are coming into when they finish school. In a world of misrepresented news and false claims we need Ss who thinking. #BookCampPD
A3: I talk with my students about my favorite books. With colleagues, I have some helpful books on my desk, and I'll occasionally blog about what I read. https://t.co/lghOaEBW6t#bookcamppd
I think for us to really have comprehension about a book we must think outside the words on the pages and reflect on how the book impacts our lives. I read A LOT of picture books over & over and each time i have a different take away! #BookCampPD
A3 Each week we do a padlet called Its Monday What are you reading. It’s a way to share a love for reading and gain insights in what our friends are interested in. Creates a reading community https://t.co/tGbU8lqJLF#BookCampPD
My colleague and friend sent this info to me today. We do a For the Love of Reading sereies that we have someone read a story and we post it on our school FB page. We are wanting to get Ts reading to Ss on this day to post. #BookCampPD
A3 Creating teams for Battle of the Books ( read and quiz on 15 books voted Sunshine State Young Reader Award Winners) Taking it past quiz question prep and asking about personal takeaways. Excited to up the conversations when we return this week. #BookCampPD
Rachelle is talking about stopping by this page https://t.co/2p5GsIuO0X and adding her recommendations. All recommendations for the next survey come from when our own #PLN posts them there. #BookCampPD
Next Sunday evening one lucky winner will receive a copy of #DisruptingThinking and another person will select one of the books https://t.co/bcIF6eE8r3 from our upcoming chats. Please spread the word! #BookCampPD
Bonus: I love this! When a writer puts words on a page, he/she isn't looking for them to stay on that page. The writer hopes his/her words move beyond the page to land in the readers' heads or to move their hearts. That's where the writing lives on. #bookcamppd
Yes. We did this with poems and it was great. Doing it with books would be fantastic. An easy way to get them to do book talks without even thinking about it. #bookcamppd
A3 Have Ss use @Flipgrid to curate a digital journal of what they recommend to readers! Ts can include their #bookjoy too! Can be shared digitally with reading community. #bookcamppd
