#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
#5thchat is starting up as we begin discussing some back to school basics as we prepare for the new school year! Please Introduce yourself by sharing your name, role, & where you are from!
A1. Lots of new an exciting things are happening this year! I am starting this year at a new school It is also an exciting year for my school as we merge 2 schools into a new building over winter break! Right now I just want to get my room put back together! #5thchat
A1: Meeting all my teachers, new students, creating a βnewβ middle school from where it was in the past. Creating a place where all are welcomed and enjoy being. #5thchat

A1 To build relationships with my Ss & Ps; to encourage Ss to mature in academics, behavior and character; develop a classroom community of love and trust #5thchat
A2. I work really hard alongside my kids to build up our classroom community. Read alouds, songs, chants, morning meetings are all apart of building those relationships. #5thchat
A2 Building relationships is key from day 1! Getting to know your students by talking with them and asking key questions. Also, I share a lot about myself and my family. #5thchat
A2 Building moral and relationships is top priority of every school year. To have successful year you need to do this. We find ways every year to get to know our Ss-who they are-interests, family, what like 2 read, etc! Once in place you've got them! #5thchat
Yes! Building on our students interests are key! Its also a great way to make learning relevant and FUN! I already have a few #Fortnite inspired STEM ideas! #5thchat

A2: Affirmation walls, writing glows/grows during peer conferencing. Ss run morning meeting to act as the mediator and follow up with discussions after. #5thchat
A2 I talk with them, go to extra curricular activities, eat lunch with them, treat them like my family (they are), be understanding, tell them they are amazing #5thchat
I love RCA's House System to build up moral and camaraderie. I have used a house system within my class at my pervious school! I also love utilizing #geniushour and Class Jobs! #5thchat
A3: I really push growth mindset and kindness lessons during the first week. It's all about building the community foundation and family vibe the 1st week! #5thchat
A3 my teammate @sherwoodgrade5 has done a lot with One Word. Has Ss pick 1 word that describes them or a word to work toward during year. Very powerful. Thinking about moving my spring Passion Project to fall as way to get to know Ss earlier because so insightful! #5thchat
A3 Dressing as a leprechaun and telling my Ss how lucky I am to have them. Then they have to find a 4 leaf clover. We discuss strategies used and growth mindset. We eat lucky charms of course!!! #5thchat
A3 I've always had students brainstorm the "rules" and then break those down into 3 gaols for our classroom and school, Take Care of Yourself, Each other snd our Environment. This empowers students to take on some leadership of our space. #5thchat

Ann from Colorado Springs - I'm working in my classroom tonight so I'm a little late! Most excited about going back to a school that I've been at before and bringing new ways of teaching to kids who need it. #goinghome#5thchat
A2 Morale is built individually and in community. We do breakfast in the classroom, and that will be a community building time. Relationships take time, trust takes time. I take a couple days off early in the year to give my Ss one-on-one time to connect with me. #5thchat
A4 This year, I will be learning as I go as I take on my new learning commons space. I really want the students to feel ownership over the space. I think the more they are invested in the space, the fewer classroom management issues we'll have. #5thchat
A3 Lots of opportunities to create, to design the classroom, to build mutual rules/expectations. Making the space and supplies their own. Writing a mission statement. A self-portrait to compare with an EOY self-portrait so they can see how their self-image changes.
#5thchat
A4: It is all about learning from mistakes. We decide consequence as a class and support each other while discovering ourselves and owning our faults. I always include the S in discipline talks: they are (usually) harder on themselves than I would be. #5thchat
A4 Classroom mgmt comes out of relationship. Restorative justice circles are more productive than office referrals. Need a break? Take one and come back ready to go. #5thchat
I utilize @responsiveclass and @ClassDojo@responsiveclass emphasized logical consquences:
1.Break it, fix it
2. Loss of Privlidge
3. Time Out (I explain it as a time-out in sports)
Dojo - I use to collect points that can later be cashed in for rewards. #5thchat
A4 We use flexible seating & @loveandlogic so since Ss have a lot of choice we don't have ton of discipline. When do the consequences fit logically. There isn't a set "punishment" we talk thru things together. We have expectations that are set day 1 of yr #5thchat
A5 The standards can be taught in the context of Ss passions/interests/hobbies. If they're connected to the content, they'll hold on to it! Let them find their best ways to learn, practice, and demonstrate mastery. #5thchat
A4 We create rules as a class, review and practice procedures. Redirection, proximity, a smile is used to get them to refocus. Changing seats to get a fresh start. Asking whats up or Mentoring conversations #5thchat
A5:It helps that one of my biggest passions is books!I love reading aloud, weekly book talks with my Ss. Get's everyone pumped! Sharks/endangered animals=HUGE passion, promote books and conservation of the planet! Sports:book Mar. Mad,track scores of our favorite teams! #5thchat
A4. Idea! If I created student @ClassDojo Debit Cards, students fill out a google form to order tickets to rewards and "online" order prizes, I can keep record of popular events and treats as well as deduct points later as they "spend" them! #5thchat
A5 My passions are the focus of our learning commons. I am a huge nature lover and plan to share that through literature and STEM challenges when possible. I am an open book this year and I can't wait! #5thchat
A5. I try to integrate my students passions as well as my own within our content. I love to also provide my students time each week to for #geniushour or passion projects! #5thchat
A5 I think Ts can always show their passion by how they present topics...show excitement! If you get to add your love of hobbies to it added bonus! When Ts excited the Ss become excited too! They feel the energy π #5thchat
A5 MY passions - didn't read that right the first time. I'm all about play, fun, and relationship. We laugh a lot in my room. Learning sticks when it's fun. #5thchat
A5: before leaving 5th I think all Ss should experience: setting their own goals, having a teacher the accidentally call "mom", find enjoyment in reading, and have as many "OMG that was amazing" moments as possible. #5thchat

A6 Some type of nature education. Ss in my district go to an overnight camp experience while focusing on Sci and History standards. A trip to a zoo/nature center works too. This helps them see the world is bigger than them and they impact the natural world around them. #5thchat
A6 This is a tough one-but think I'd have to say I really want my Ss to leave my room w/the β€of reading! I want them hooked on books/an author they can't put down. #5thchat
A6 My hope for them is that they will own their learning and their learning style/needs. Giving them words and experiences where they can self-advocate before going off to middle school and multiple teachers hopefully empowers them. #5thchat
A7:Bottom line:you don't!You fit in what you can in the time you have, and save the rest for the next day.Eventually, you will give your Ss everything that they need to find success, you just have to have faith in yourself and not be afraid to ask for help if you need it! #5thchat
A7 Set daily goals and do the best you can. Some days you finish and some days you don't. As a mom of 3, I rarely get everything accomplished. #5thchat
A7 We follow our curriculum map designed by district that's set up to follow our report cards too. Then along with that I started a Studio Time to help all Ss have Voice & Choice so they rdg & write daily #5thchat
Q7. I have yet to figure this out! It is easy to just say balance. But I can admit I have an horrible work/personal life balance. I am either excited and going over the top or obsessing over data and thinking of my next steps. I call it passion!? lol #5thchat
A8: I do something creative: color, origami, or glue something! I also go hang out in nature to just ground myself and regroup. If all else fails: pick up Harry Potter or Land of Stories and visit a far away land :) #5thchat
A8 I try to balance work & personal best I can! I'm at the gym at 5:30am every day to get my mental self ready so can tackle all school stuff the rest of the day! Lucky to have a hubs that helps w/grocery and cooking too! πππͺπ»π₯ #5thchat
A8. I read for enjoyment, participate in digital PD of my choosing (for fun), craft on my Cricut, swim, binge watch Netflix, eat fast food, get a pedicure, & sleep! #5thchat
