A1 Engagement means:
1) No packets
2) No shhing
3) Lots of choice
4) Lots of flexiiblity
Instead of engagement, let's talk inspiration. What does student inspiration in a classroom look like? If students aren't inspired, there is no learning #EduAR
Happy to join #EduAR tonight. I'm a high school math teacher, working to instill more PBL into the math classroom in to heighten S engagement. My doctoral study focused on changes to instruction to influence S engagement in the math classroom. Can't wait to learn more!

A1. When students are given opportunities to do hands on activities, solve problems, collaborate and make connections- they are engaged and also empowered! #EduAR
A1: School was designed to teach compliance so too many Ss just learned how to do school. What they need is to be curious again so they are motivated to want to learn. We need to let go so they can discover who they are and how they learn best. #EduAR
A1 Students need to partners in learning. They can’t be passive learners memorizing rote material. If they are asked to question, reflect, communicate and collaborate l, they will build meaning and make links with their learning. Trust your students. #eduAR

A1 When students are actively engaged, participating in hands on activities, and hooked, their engagement locks in and they learn. Without engagement, you have talking. #EduAR
A1 When students are actively engaged, participating in hands on activities, and hooked, their engagement locks in and they learn. Without engagement, you have talking. #EduAR
A1: When you allow the students to be involved in the learning, the activities, they are authentically engaged. They learn because they were part of the whole experience from start to finish. #EduAR
A1
"...Involve me and I learn."
This goes beyond engagement to empowerment and honoring agency.
If we truly involve students, then we provide opportunities for them to be authors of their own learning.

A1: Ss must be active participants in the learning process in order to create lasting learning! Engagement consists of hands-on, collaboration, & Ss taking the lead as they think, learn, and discover new content! #EduAR

A1: Engagement is the involvement in & enthusiasm for school as Ss are excited about what's happening & what they're learning. They contribute to the learning environment & are emotionally connected to their school. #EduAR
I think we make the mistake of thinking engagement means hands on, but when its truly student lead, the learning will look engaged in ALL formats of the lesson. #EduAR

A1. Ss are in charge of their learning. It's hands on, collaborative, & the T it's serving as a facilitator. The Ss are involved in an experience, something they'll remember. #eduAR
A1: Involving students in the process makes a huge difference. Students can direct their own learning & assist in designing grading rubrics. S reflection and feedback to teachers can lead to changes to instruction that better meet S's needs. #EduAR
A1: Hands In engagements are the best! I myself learn best by doing! I myself am a huge #OutdoorLearning advocate! Is all about getting Ss #outdoors and making contact with the real world! Get them hands on! #eduAR

A1 Authentic engagement happens when students are involved in learning that matters to them. To set up that kind of experience we must invest time in knowing who our students are and how we can connect to their hearts! Relationships are key! #EduAR

A1 "...Involve me and I learn" #EduAR
Voice, choice, agency, participation, collaboration, cooperation, interests, celebrations, inquiry, questions
S:Ask me what I'd like to learn, what I need to learn, what I don't know yet but need to know
Students at the heart at what we do
A2: No doubt relationships are critical for Ss to be engaged and connected to the school. Many young students but few older students feel surrounded by caring adults at school. #eduAR
A1: #whatif Ts demonstrate what it means to be engaged. Many have learned how to play the game of school because what they learn is not relevant or challenging Let's shake up the system to find out who our children really are and not let them just "do" school. #EduAR
A2: Creating an atmosphere for student engagement means students need to feel comfortable enough to make mistakes. Students know mistakes are a step to success when this has been established early. No fear=freedom to learn. #EduAR
A2 They absolutely do. If we want students to be engaged, they must know that their teacher cares about who they are and how they learn. If you want to minimize other obstacles to learning, you make sure to invest time to know they people in class/school with you. #eduAR

A1: #eduar Ss can give feedback to Ts about the classroom; when Ss see Ts incorporate that feedback into future lessons, Ss see how they can influance the direction of their learning. Ts need to LISTEN with an open mind, empathy, & attention to student personalization.
A2: Yes!! When there is a positive learning environment that is built on strong relationships, the possibilities are endless!! Ss feed off of what is modeled for them! When I’m excited about a lesson, Ss are engaged & thriving off the energy I put out!#EduAR
A2: 100% Yes they do! Ss are motivated to learn from and with people they respect and care for. Learning can happen in any situation, but authentic, relative learning happens when relationships have been established. #EduAR
A1) Giving the student the power, allowing them to teach their classmates and take total control of their learning. Something I am still trying to master. #EDUAR

A2. Relationships are the foundation for engagement and learning. If learners do not feel connected and valued, the lesson will have no significance. #EduAR

A1: When students are involved in the learning process it creates a culture of buy in and a shared sense of responsibility to achieve success. This process eliminates the us vs them mentality and improves teacher/student rapport and trust. #EduAR
A2: Yes -- Relationships matter! Before jumping into the curriculum, spend time building the culture and getting to know each of your children. Some kids act out because they don't have relationships. One teacher can make the difference with a child who is struggling. #EduAR
A2: Students who have positive relationships with their teacher have a comfort level to take risks and make mistakes. They realize that their voice matters! #EduAR

A2 kids don’t learn from people they don’t like - just as adults don’t learn from leaders they don’t respect.. for learning to soar, the relationship should be positive.. #eduar
A2
Teacher-student relationships are incredibly impactful.
It's all about relationships. They set the tone.
Relationships allow us to create a true classroom culture. Not a ME culture—a CLASSROOM culture.
A culture we build together. 💖💖

a2) Abseltouly, relationships in the classroom are some of the most important things we do. If they don't feel you love them than they won't feel the need to work for you. Same with my athletes I coach. Demand respect, but love them so they want to give it to you! #EduAR

A2 The Teacher/Student relationship plays a MAJOR role in engagement! It is the Ts ability to teach with the child in mind! Recognizing academic differences & modifying classroom instruction in order to reach every child achieve his or her academic potential #EduAR
A2: Relationships are the foundation we must have to make authentic connections, build trust, and establish a whole child safe place for each learner. #EduAR
A2: I wrote this about building positive relationships https://t.co/d3yAAHCDYE when some teachers were dealing with behavior issues. #EduAR Relationships take time to build and sustain. Those relationships between teacher and students really matter.

A2: S-T relationships are KEY. Best lessons always came after honest work to get to know Ss. Ss need to know that Ts CARE. Get to know Ss interests outside of classroom, family life, job, hobbies, and figure ways to incorporate these into the class to heighten engagement #eduar

A2) Starts with relationships, with teacher/student at the center of that engagement. Additionally, teacher/teacher and student/student collaboration play a huge role in the engagement of learning. Lastly, students need to be empowered to share work with community.

A3: Providing each student with what he/she needs to be successful will support his/her individual learning needs. When needs are met students will feel more equipped to tackle the task, lesson or assignment. #eduAR
A2 Absolutely! We can’t involve our students in learning experiences that matter to them if we don’t know them and love them first. More importantly, there is a trust that comes as the relationship is established that provides a sense of safety for the kids to take risks. #EduAR
A3 No such thing. Fair is not equal and equal is not fair.
My daughter is SPED. What is "fair" for her is not fair for my G&T son. I don't want them treated equally. I want Ts to have high expectations of them both and that will/should look different.
#EduAR
Q2: Relationships are the key to learning - key to opening minds, heart & soul - knowing and understanding our children needs to be central to all that we do in our work in classrooms.
@bethhill2829@Lindsey_Bohler#EduAR
A3 Student engagement is about getting the student involved. Fairness levels the playing field and allows for equitable education and engagement to happen. Every student deserves fair but it’s not always equal. #EduAR
A1: Involve me ... that means students drive the work. Their passions, their interests, ... Use the inquiry model of instruction. Yes, there’s always content to cover, but move towards student inquiry. Tagging @trev_mackenzie’s #DiveintoInquiry#eduar
In reply to
@Lindsey_Bohler, @bethhill2829, @nortnik, @trev_mackenzie
A3 "Fair" in my mind means equitable, not equal, and that is required for student engagement. If we aren't meeting the needs of the student with support or enrichment, then we will have frustrated, unengaged students every time.
#EduAR
q3) We have to make sure in the classroom that all our students needs are being met and they are all able to be engaged. Even if it means teaching a different way or modifying an assignment. We have to invest in all students so their needs are being met. #EduAR
In reply to
@bethhill2829, @Lindsey_Bohler, @nortnik
A3. Everyone is different! We all have learning styles &/or quirks that help us understand. As educators, we must provide the opportunities that will have our Ss shine, excel, & believe in themselves. If you want to treat everyone the same go work on an assembly line. #EduAR
A3: Fair vs equal is interesting. Equal means everyone gets the same thing or does the same activity. Fair means what is equitable because each child is different and unique. Being fair involves empathy and awareness of the differences. #EduAR
A3
Equality vs. Equity vs. Justice
When students know they are learning in a just culture, they are empowered to take thoughtful risks, to own their learning, and to seek justice for others, too.
#eduAR
A3) On many occasions it has not played out well, as some students and adults have the belief that they will never be called on so why engage 🤷🏾♂️ #EduAR
A3: Fair is making sure every student in your class has what they need to be successful, to be engaged. Often times when a student isn't engaged it's not bc they don't want to be, it's bc we didn't meet a need. #EduAR
A2: Relationships are key, but the why of that fact is what's really important. Not only will students work harder & go longer w/teachers they like, they are willing to take risks with those teachers by their sides. They are safe. Risk taking is where we hit pay dirt! #eduAR
A3

#eduAR
A2. Teacher/Student Relationships play a huge role in engagement. We all work a little bit harder and get a little bit more involved when we feel connected to someone who is asking us to get involved. To skip the relationships is an injustice. #EduAR

A:3 The very common sense understanding that all people learn differently is exactly why standardizing learning is educational malpractice. #EduAR#knowbetterdobetter
A2: Students do not learn when their guard is up. It’s frightening to consider the necessity for a child’s guard to be up in a place where learning is supposed to be taking place. They should be equipped for engagement. #EduAR
A3. We must find ways to differentiate for all learning types and levels in the classroom. This is hard but is a must. Takes time and dedication. #EduAR
A3 All students are unique, they all have different needs. We can’t expect same strategy to work for all. Being fair means giving the support that each student needs, not what is easier for a system/adults. If we want kids to be engaged and believe in learning; trust them. #eduAR
A3: When learning experiences are targeted to meet learners where they are with what they need in ways they find meaningful, we'll have a considerable amount of growth to celebrate. #eduar
A3: Students will always compare and talk about "fair." It is hard for them, as young people, to understand what "fair" means. As educators, we must adhere to systems that allow for equity, and coach our Students to understand "fair" v. "equal." #eduar
A4 Our students listen and learn from one another. Allowing for collaboration between students allows for active engagement and enrichment to occur. #EduAR
A3 If we begin to teach our Ss how to use their voice and help guide their learning then equity will begin to show itself more and more. Advocacy must be taught! #EduAR Fair isn’t equal and teaching Ss this is extremely necessary.
A3. When we aren’t giving students what they need to be successful, they won’t fully be engaged. Therefore, don’t give what is equal, give what each child needs and is fair so they have the full opportunity to be engaged. #EduAR
In reply to
@Lindsey_Bohler, @bethhill2829, @nortnik
A3 Fair Vs Equal relates to #equity - classrooms need to be equitable.
We need to see the barriers that children face in their learning - we need to questions ourselves our beliefs our values our practices - if we want engagement we need equitable classrooms
#EduAR
Q4) I think having our students work together and sometimes with students they don't normally work with promotes them being involved. It also shows them how to work with others even those they may not see eye to eye with or that they wouldn't normally work with. #EDUAR
In reply to
@Lindsey_Bohler, @bethhill2829, @nortnik
A4: I ❤️ incorporating @KaganOnline structures throughout the day to promote S engagement & collaboration! The structures ensure that ALL Ss have a role & opportunity to contribute & learn from others! #eduAR
A4. When learners collaborate, they become engaged as they listen/learn perspectives from others that stimulate different ideas that leads to collective decisions and learning. #EduAR
A4 When students are working together to solve a problem or complete a task, or even take part in discussion, engagement tends to be higher because students feel safer to take risks with small groups than in front of an entire class. #EduAR
A3 In order to ensure all Ss receive what they need, a positive learning climate must be created where the expectation is for EVERYONE to learn! All students are expected to work although not always at the same pace, level or same material but always learning and growing! #EduAR
A4 Students need to learn more about true collaboration. By learning together they can question, challenge, push each other and help each other learn. Learning is a social process, we need to let kids have that opportunity. #eduAR
A4. Collaboration builds teamwork. It helps Ss to understand not 1 individual has all the answers. Collaboration helps put the learning in the Ss hands & has the T truly facilitating. #EduAR
A2: Absolutely. Relationship is everything. It’s the classic saying. “Students don’t care how much you know unless they know how much you care.” Get to know your students, build relationships, & tap into their interests & passions. #eduar
In reply to
@nortnik, @bethhill2829, @Lindsey_Bohler
A4: Collaboration w/in the group means students having voice. To have voice and be heard means a culture has been established that students feel welcomed, valued. When this culture is achieved, student engagement skyrockets! #eduar
A2: #eduAR if you’re not an interesting/exciting teacher, your Ss won’t be engaged! Also, if you’re not prepared, they won’t be engaged! On their end, Ss need to be prepared each day to come to school to learn!
In reply to
@nortnik, @bethhill2829, @Lindsey_Bohler

A4: Collaboration with peers supports kids' ability to view various perspectives, form new opinions, become more grounded in current opinions, and provides an outlet to talk about the learning in a social setting...just like adults do! #EduAR
A4: When Ss see other Ss involved in the lesson and taking risks they are inspired to do the same. They encourage each other through their discussions, ideas, and thoughts. It is a beautiful thing to witness! Student lead engagement! #EduAR
A4 Ss need to learn how to collaborate. They don't know how unless we show them. We'll tell them to "work w/ a partner" or they'll use peer review for assignments. But, they have no idea of the purpose...the point. Teach Ss how to collaborate and S inspiration will follow #EduAR
A3: Fair is giving all students when they need to achieve grade level standards. When we’re fair, we don’t withhold from any child despite their physical or learning disability, ethnicity, or behavior. #EduAR

A4: Collaboration empowers learners with skills for LIFE: how to actively listen, resolve conflict, give and receive meaningful feedback, share & take responsibility, make just decisions, advocate for their rights and the rights of others, encourage & help others...& more! #eduar
A3) We also have to be cautious. At times we praise a student/adult for their level of engagement when it lends to their strengths. We want to honor the voice, strengths, and development of all participants. #EduAR
Q4 True collaboration is key, not just group work and calling it collaboration. We must teach Ss to speak up, prove their answer, debate with one another with respect, and build off one another’s strengths. Also teach the importance of independence in Learning #balance#eduar
A4 Collaboration makes the learning visible to all - it creates a community of learners & promote collective efficacy - it enables all to participate and contribute in the learning - it increases engagement by valuing all contributions to the learning.

This! Assigning students to work on a group project is NOT collaboration. It can be, but in my experience, it usually is not. Collaboration needs to be modeled and fostered. #eduAR

A5. Are all students sharing ideas and taking active part in solving the problem. We need students to be able to “show” what they learned and not “tell” us. #EduAR
A5 To me, an uncommon experience gets kids out of their seats and moving to learn. It allows students to learn in ways they choose, to find and question info. If you let kids lead, you will be surprised where they take you. They will be excited! #eduAR
A5 1) Ss arguing/debating complete with evidence.
2) Ss demonstrating their process leading to a product. Product is secondary; process is primary
3) Ss explaining the purpose of what they learned (thru song, rap, infomercial, website)
#EduAr
A5. Whenever I go into a classroom I always ask Ss, "What are you doing? Why are you doing this? Can you teach me?" If they can answer these w/out hesitation I believe there may be a method to the Ts madness. #EduAR
Collaboration is a very vital skill. It is what is lacking in our adult world. We need to teach them, show them by modeling how to collaborate, discuss without judgement, LISTEN, and be open to new ideas. Collaboration helps students to find value in others! #EduAR
A4) If we agree that learning is a social activity, and therefore collaboration is a natural extension, then we need to allow for-and promote-collaboration in every way possible. Technology makes collaboration possible for Ss who may not be vocal in the classroom. #EduAR
A5. Student to Student Conversations: Teaching each other, solving a problem, checking each others' work, reading to each other...well you get the picture! #EduAR

A5: The quality of the questions exchanged between students and the explosive levels of curiosity are barometers that never fail when measuring experiences both common and uncommon. #EduAR
A5: Ss shld be able to readily articulate their learning goals, unique learning pathway, and evidence of mastery, which might be varied products. Look for productive hum in classrooms, and lots of collaborative S talk, feedback, and revision. #EduAR
A5 Some of my favorite evidence is when my students suggest future lessons as spin-offs of previous learning or when I hear about such suggestions from their other teachers because students make cross-curricular connections. #EduAR
What a powerful question. I actually thought about this as we were developing questions. I am an introvert. Collaboration is hard for me when I am with people I do not know or trust. #eduAR
A5: We must look for signs that students are not only engaged, but also EMPOWERED. Where do they have voice, choice, and ownership in their learning experiences? https://t.co/pmUGEDEulZ#eduar
Q5: I would look for discussions, sharing of ideas, proving/justifying ideas, listening to each other, compromise, respectful interactions, and work that shows they are working towards a common goal. #EduAR
A5: 1) Have I seen it before?, 2) Is the teacher out of a comfort zone?, and 3) Is the teacher asking him/her self: "What's the dream learner experience I've always wanted to design and execute, but have been too afraid that admin would walk in?" #eduar
A4: What we want are our kids to be able to thrive adults in an uncertain world. They need mentors and guides to provide learning environments that encourage collaboration and to become self-directed independent learners with agency. #EduAR
A5: During an “uncommon” learning experience, I’m observing what it looks like, sounds like, & feels like in the room. I engage Ss in conversations & have them explain what’s going on. We also reflect on the experience! I love when Ss lead the convo & get excited to share! #EduAR

I like your emphasis of adults modeling collaboration. It’s important for educators to model the expectations we have of students. It makes our expectations believably attainable. #EduAR
A5: Just imagine in every day there can be a teachable moment. #whatif Ts start teaching how to collect evidence that demonstrates the process they are going through to learn, unlearn, and relearn. The artifacts can be pictures, audio or video files, text, interviews, etc. #EduAR
A5) This makes me think of a book called “The Power of Moments.”
Exceptional learning comes from creating exceptional moments. Outcomes include curiosity, creativity, excitement, and ownership of their learning! #EduAR

A4: When I was a student I sat in rows and listened to the sage in the stage! #EduAR NOW as a #PYP teacher I watch my students (even young) #collaborate#inquire and work together is such exciting ways! Im@jealous of the way they get to #learn!

A6: Share, share, Share our failures and our triumphs. We can help other teachers reignite their passion or find a passion for teaching by supporting them and showing them why we are passionate about what we do! Be transparent in everything! #EduAR
A5 Some of the evidence you may say in an “uncommon” learning experience would be: Excitement, eagerness to ask more questions & share, confidence on the topic, & happiness! #EduAR
Collaboration can look different for different children - we can collaborate but each contribute in different ways - suiting all children - we need to consider what are the different ways collaboration can look in my classroom? #EduAR

A6: Ts deserve agency in their own learning so know the joys and challenges of it, and can model it w/ Ss. We can’t skip over T agency to get to S agency. #EduAR
Teacher efficacy is vital, and those who have it teach like their hair is on fire! How can we spread this fire to other teachers who lack it? (quote/image by @burgessdave)

A6 I agree with @Lindsey_Bohler, peer observations are vital to speading the passion. We can talk until we are blue in the face, but providing colleagues with the experience will do so much more toward lighting their fire. #EduAR
I believe collab is a skill that all personality types must have. It’s important to differentiate this depending on how much of an introvert they are. Scaffold it but they do need to learn how to collab with others and learn how to utilize the skills of others. #eduar
A6 😅😂🤣. Share the passion by sharing the learning- invite teachers & classrooms into your room - invite teachers to collaborate with you on multi- grade levels lessons & activities. volunteer to go to colleagues classrooms-to share/read or model. put yourself out there #eduar
A6: As teachers, we can spread our fire and passion by living out our values with fire and passion! Model true collaboration, inquiry, critical thinking, risk-taking, and a growth mindset. Care for others. Be sincere. #eduar
A6: Just imagine your school on fire. Be excited! Be engaged. #whatif the school and all the kids welcome each other as they enter school. Let every child and every teacher and every staff member know they are valued. #EduAR
A6: Collaborate & share!! Invite Ts in to observe & work on creating magical learning experiences together!! When Ts see the positive outcomes that can come from instilling passion into the experience, they’ll realize it’s with the extra effort! #EduAR

A6: Don't be afraid to share your passion. Fail forward in public.... it is a powerful thing when a strong, passionate teacher is not afraid to say, "I got that wrong". #eduAR
Q6) Just as we model for Ss, we model for our peer Ts. If we teach like wildfire and share what we do, it will spread. Pineapple charts. #ObserveMe. Many ways to invite peers in our rooms to see what is happening. Always keep an open mind, listen, learn from each other. #EduAR
Spreading fire to teachers is possible via school-based Professional Learning Teams, professional development, coaching, mentorship, or opportunities to reflect that have been embedded in professional development. #EduAR

A6 Not sure about fire & greatness
To me it needs to be real & authentic-it needs to be in my everyday work-it needs to be in my actions and words-it needs to be in my relationships with my colleagues-it's in the ordinariness of my work each day-to make a difference
#EduAR
A6: We must remember that when sharing and growing our own level of efficacy, the popular thing isn’t always the right thing. This can sometimes play games with our efficacy meter! #EduAR
A6: Share your stories. Be the chief storyteller. Have your kids share why they love your school, your class, the other kids. I'll share your story if I see it. That's how I found @bethhill2829@hansappel094 and others for my podcast. Amazing educators on @Twitter and #EduAR
A6 Share and share it ALL- be transparent with what and how you make the magic happen. If it’s hard let people know it was hard and it flopped make sure they know that as well. No one likes a goody goody and they won’t want your fire so be real! #eduar
A6) I think educators are just grownup kids. They want to be challenged, supported, and empowered. They thrive being led by risktaking, mistake-making #CHARACTERSTRONG leaders who inspire them to be life long learners while modeling PASSION!

A6 My #OneWord2018 was BEACON. I believe we must be beacons of light shining in our schools, helping to create a culture of passion and love for our children and their learning! Our love must shine so bright that the darkness can simply not exist! #EduAR
Spreading professional fire is a shared responsibility. Building leaders both admin. and classroom must model passion and enthusiasm about reaching every child every day. When schools can operate in a culture that prioritizes the needs of our beloved babies we win #EduAR
