#TOSAChat is a chat on Twitter every Monday night at 8pm PST for TOSAs (teachers on special assignment), including all edtech and instructional coaches.
Risk taking is about stepping out of your comfort zone to try and accomplish something you know, if successful, will be AWESOME for students! #TOSAchat
Mike, Tech Integrator/TOSA from NY. Here's my @Buncee Bio Card I use in some chat intros. Crashed early the past few nights so I'm able to stay up for a little #tosachat from the East coast. https://t.co/k5rllG4UGi
A1 The lesson should be student-centered, students are engaged and growing from the activity.
Devices definitely shouldn't be expensive calculators or "search machines." Not just an uploaded PDF file...
#TOSAchat
Kyle in Las Vegas, trying to pop in while watching the #GoldenKnights, risk taking is trying something and not caring what you look like if you fall on your face, just get up and dust off, try again! #tosachat
Hi friends, HI!! Amanda, Digital Innovation TOSA in Campbell, CA... to me, risk-taking is doing something new, out of your comfort zone, maybe a little scary bc you know the results could be amazing! #TOSAchat
#TOSACHAT A1: The technology has a purposeful role that supports the learning outcomes, it isn't the learning outcome. It's there to provide feedback, for data collection for formative decisions, or for creating a student product!
A1 I'm always learning that this could look different as time goes on & tech evolves, especially as it gets easier for Ss to create, publish, & connect with the world. I try and capture what it looks like by microblogging here and by writing at https://t.co/0UpN4w5YIM#tosachat
Liza STEM TOSA from WA state. Risk taking is trying something where you are unsure of the outcome, but the intent is to do whatโs best for kids #TOSAchat
A1: When tech is integrated correctly and fully there is no mention of the tech itself. Ss and Ts are working seamlessly as tech is the medium but the context is highlighted. #tosachat

A1: When tech is integrated meaningful it makes for a lesson that is more meaningful than it would have been w/out the tech. I guess it all goes back to redefining the lesson w/tech #TOSAchat

I know a thing or two about expensive calulators. Have a TI-83, TI-86 and TI-89. Need to splurge on the latest greatest. Maybe a used TI-nspire as a stepping stone! #TOSAchat
A1: tech should look and feel like an enhancement, not an extra. Students are engaged but also connecting with content that empowers their learning. #tosachat

A2 After #CISC2018 I am rethinking my tool set #tosachat especially PD and its implications, creation, and presentation thanks to @CateTolnai and @jcorippo's amazingness. AND I always default to Cognitive Coaching
Ah as far as tech tools...yes, all of these. And most important the camera on my iPhone, capturing Ss work and audio/video as unbiased evidence #tosachat
A2. My Fun(ner) Formative preso is my entry point for many teachers. Includes @Flipgrid@quizizz@PearDeck. Deeper dives go to GSuite and extensions/tools. Always gotta keep the pedagogy and the why first though. #TOSAchat
A2: This has changed for me, especially hanging with #tosachat folks. My focus has been around our gamified PD and helping teachers at slightly beyond their comfort zones. The tool changes depending on the needs of my teacher.

For me, tools come and go. There may be go to tools but listening to what teachers need leads to more purposeful decisions as to which tool to use. #tosachat
That's why I didn't list specific learning tools here. There's just so many we must keep handy for the right job. Grateful for all of them and for #TOSAchat where I can often discover a new go-to tool.

A3 It's really important for everyone to realize that technology enhances learning.
As a Tech Integration Specialist, I feel like its my job to have the conversation about exactly HOW technology will enhance a current instructional practice.
#TOSAchat
#Tosachat A3: (What I WANT to say): What's that? You don't have time to TEACH YOUR STANDARDS? What I really say - "Let's see if these tools can help save you some time!"
A3 There's always time for things that are important to you. Ask your Ss if it is important to them. If they say yes and you still "ain't got time for that," that's on you. It's 2018. Don't keep letting things pass you by. #tosachat
A3a: But the snarky part of me says, "Is your phone still connected to the kitchen wall with a really long cord?" I try to keep those thoughts inside. #TOSAchat
A3 Those Ts, I try and show how tech can make their job easier. Try and build that relationship with the T and then start to bring in other tools. #TOSAchat
A3: This one takes time. Generally, Ts that say this end up needing the most support. It essentially starts by being available and making yourself know to them. @Jyoung1219 talks about relationships and that is what is needed before they can see the benefits. #tosachat

A3: Snarky reply I want to say: "Thanks for doing your Ss a disservice." What I really say: "Rome wasn't built in a day, and you won't learn everying at once, pick a tool, learn how you can use it, and get better at it." #tosachat
#TOSAchat Q3 tech isn't an add-on to what you're doing. It should blend seamlessly into your practice. Our kids are able to do it very well. Let's meet them where they are.
A3: If you donโt have time for tech youโre doing it wrong. And you donโt have time for modern students. #edtech is the world they live in. If you canโt make the time stretch for them what on earth are you doing? Itโs 2018 & this is no longer optional #TOSAchat#LetsGetReal
A3: Technology can help save time on the frivolous and allow you to spend more time on things that matter like building relationships, building community, differentiation, diving deeper, creating meaning, etc #TOSAchat
A1 A1 if Tech is being integrated meaningfully, it would look like all Ss able to participate, multiple pathways for participation, opps for collaboration, and choice in how Ss demonstrate learning. #TOSAchat
A3: If you donโt have time for tech youโre doing it wrong. And you donโt have time for modern students. #edtech is the world they live in. If you canโt make the time stretch for them what on earth are you doing? Itโs 2018 & this is no longer optional #TOSAchat#LetsGetReal
Ha! Yes!! I'm with ya!! The "What I really say" is so important to building relationships and making progress. It's worth keeping the "What I want to say" in your head most of the time. #TOSAchat
A3cont: A mindset to share, not necessarily words to say to teachers: Technology will not replace teachers, but those who use edtech will replace those who donโt. #TOSAChat

I have not read that. I will add it to the list. We built ChromeWarrior now we call it PSUSD Odyssey with @AlludoPlay. We created missions and badges around topics we deemed vital to our district. PLN, Tech Tools, Google cert, future Ready. #tosachat

A4 Recently during a workshop, after being "questioned" for a few minutes on WHY, I showed the @MicrosoftEDU Immersive Reader feature. #MicDrop The teacher was literally sitting there with her jaw dropped in amazement!!! #TOSAchat
A4: Not my win, but whenever I have showed a T a new tool that helps them, then they come back to show me what they have been doing, that's the win in my book #tosachat
A3: I ask them what they are studying, I show/discuss the SAMR model & I hopefully begin building a relationship with them. I find that matters most of all. #TOSAChat
A4: On the same day, I had a tech timid 3rd grade teacher and a high school AP world language teacher EMBRACE @flipgrid and they both shared their excitement with me. #TOSAchat
Sounds like a type of PD I would love to be a part of. #4OCF is all about this idea of changing PD and taking charge of your own PD. #tosachathttps://t.co/mWkm7AZBje

A4: Personally, the flipped/mastery model in my classroom was a major win because it helped my Ss take ownership over their learning, gave me more time to dig deeper during class, and afforded me the opportunity to meet every Ss needs. #TOSAchat
a4 We're developing an online, collaborative PD across grade levels and expertise that is free for all and is based on Ss misunderstandings. Heavily laden in tech, with tech, and from tech #tosachat
A4 weโve been teaching a cohort of 30 Ts about computational thinking/CS, just asking for a few lessons of implementation in the classroom. Theyโve designed TONS & inviting us in, sending pics & teaching other teachers! #TOSAchat
This "out of the classroom" thing weighs on me a bit. I've had a few people ask if I "miss being a teacher." They don't mean it to be negative but my view: I AM in the classroom and I AM still a teacher. (just sayin') #tosachat

A4: Another win is anytime I'm able to provide Ss with feedback from anywhere. The other day I was able to help a student while I was in line at the grocery store. #TOSAchat
#TOSAchat A4: In a K classroom to help get @seesaw rolling and the T tells me a certain child never talks and not to worry about teacher her. I'm like.... "hold my beer.:" Sure enough, the little girl spoke! and now 3 months later she's speaking loudly and confidently.
A4. My little victory is when I see teachers using meaningful tech that I did PD on. Makes my day when they send me an email or text when they are excited as their students. #TOSAchat

A2 My go to TOSA tools are @OneNoteEDU@padlet and Iโm learning more about @Flipgrid. Try to model what Iโve learned from SIOP and How People Learn. Need to improve my culturally responsive teaching. #TOSAchat
For sure, Corey! This is the purpose of my passion these days. It's great when someone is interested while I'm with them, but it's even more important what they do when I'm gone. #tosachat
A4 A big win is getting a thank you from a teacher or student who you've helped empower though tech. Helping Ss w/ disabilities & assistive tech are always big wins. When it makes the seemingly impossible, possible. Also count small wins as big wins. A win is a win. #tosachat

Ask for help, accept that you need to be a life-long learner to make life-long learners, just donโt lie to my face and say โthereโs no time.โ #TOSAchat
A5 While I don't think we can know everything, in my position I feel an extra burden to be REALLY prepared. I might only have 1 chance to really convince the teacher there's power in what I'm showing. #TOSAchat
Like a Hail Mary at the end of the game, chuck it up and hope for the best? If it fails or gets off plan, self critique, make the changes and move on #tosachat
A5: My dad's 7 Ps proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance....but seriously, we have to realize that tech doesn't always go as planned...and we need to model perseverance and not being "all knowing" #TOSAchat

A4 Worked with 2 amazing ELA teachers who wanted to shake things up in their classroom. We had students make picture books with positive messages. Lots of choices for students. Some digital and some not. Shared them with local elementary schools. #StuVoice#TOSAchat
A5. I am big on giving students ownership. I try and show them the bare minimum. Awesome when a kid tells me they figured out how to do something and they can teach the rest of the class. It's usually "that kid" too. #tosachat#tosaholdmybeer

I think it's a bit of the judgement. Like I don't have 5 sections of classes like everyone else. There are days when I'm only in one or two and others when I'm in 9 and eating lunch on the go in my car between schools. #TOSAchat

By the end of my 1st year as a TOSA, when Ts would ask โdo you miss being in the classroom,โ I would sarcastically say, โI know the right answer is, โyesโ.โ
I got very tired of explaining, โIโm in more classrooms than Iโve ever been before, I see more kids than you.โ

For the teachers AND students. Sometimes I think if students can persevere, the teachers are more likely to. If students are "freaking out" then teachers usually follow suit. #tosachat
But itโs a fallacious assumption to think that only classroom teachers are with kids.
And frankly, half the time I think itโs born out of resentment on the part of classroom teachers who think that being a TOSA is easier.
It also has a โone path onlyโ mentality to it.

A4 Big win in the classroom w/technology thanks to @Edmodo by connecting Ss to collaborate internationally to solve problems & learn from each other. They develop 21st century skills while tacking content in relevant & authentic assessments. #StuVoice#TOSAchat

A6 Today is the hardest/most frustrating it will likely be. Stick with it. Practice, practice, practice. Don't be afraid to get out of the way and let Ss drive. You don't have to be an expert to start. Just he an expert at not talking oneself out of starting. #tosachat
A6. Going back to SAMR, start with the S and progress. Too often I see teachers try and jump straight to R without building the foundation and then blaming tech for the failure. #babysteps#tosachat

Agreed! Many people feel in a rush to learn everything they've ever heard of. There are a TON of tools I wish I knew more about but just haven't gotten to yet. It's not a knock on those tools, its a matter of learning what I currently have the need for. #tosachat
