CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Welcome, Maureen - Challenging when so many have the flu! Do you think it is starting to lighten up now in terms of the number affected? #catholicedchat
One of the jobs of schools is to help kids become good citizens, and the digital world is now an important part of our world. So, if citizenship is defined by rights and responsibilities, then the same would be true of #digitalcitizenship#catholicedchat
A1: digital citizenship is an acknowledgement that we have rights and responsibilities online as well as off. It’s more to me than just web etiquette, just as citizenship in the “real world” is more than manners. #catholicedchat
It's all relative to what you're accustomed to. We considered -27 cold. I saw a Florida news report they were concerned about 50 - Chicagoans were like... #CatholicEdChat

A1. Dig Cit is helping produce/identify quality content and more importantly being an example of respectful engagement with others...take out the word "digital" and its pretty similar to citizenship. #CatholicEdChat
A1. Discussion surrounding digital citizenship has been growing, but not everyone can agree on its definition. Some see it as online safety & others think it’s a way to address cyberbullying. Some define it as knowledge in a digital age. It is all these things. #catholicedchat

A1. Digital literacy can help us determine what is true vs what may not be accurate. While of course this is important when it comes to learning about & understanding world events, the ability to distinguish fallacy from fact is equally important in daily life. #catholicedchat
A1. Raising students who are aware of the moral imperatives that govern their online behaviors. Teaching social justice through social media! @OConnellHS students are using Twitter to study #HuckFinn! https://t.co/pcCK8uReiB#CatholicEdChat
A1 - our vision statement for #DigCit course (abridged) "... emphasizing the S as community member & leader. Digital citizens are called to know and to exercise their rights and responsibilities in the digital world just as they are in the non-digital." #CatholicEdChat
logging in to #catholicedchat between speech rounds. My saturday mornings belong to helping kids become better communicators, better thinkers, and better advocates, but it does mean less tweeting :)
The number one concern expressed by the #digcit kids (they help write the curriculum each semester) is an understanding of their personal data graph and how it moves and is used around the web. Gonna teach some VPNs and cookie-cutters this semester #catholicedchat
A2. Because the content kids produce impacts their lives and those they know as well. Nothing is ever truly erased. And one mistake can follow a person for a long time...#CatholicEdChat
A2: Young people aren't always aware of their actions online and how it affects others. Kindness in the virtual world needs to be taught and practiced. #catholicedchat
A1. Digital literacy/citizenship addresses the 21st C skill of helping Ss to learn, communicate & collaborate safely & responsibly. Being a digital citizen includes having email etiquette, reporting & preventing cyberbullying, learning how to protect private info. #catholicedchat
A2 As in all areas ... as educators we are called to discover and cultivate God-given talents. In the digital saturation of current culture, imperative to experience & reflect in school where safe environment can support and guide. #CatholicEdChat
A2. Remember, the internet never forgets. It’s our job to teach today’s students how to manage their digital footprint. It is our responsibility to help all technology users become the best digital citizens they can be. #catholicedchat

A2 Many time we assume students know how to act/respond because it is digital, but the students do guidance to navigate both the digital and real world. #CatholicEdChat
A2. It’s exciting to learn, explore and create online, but we also need to teach Ss that digital tools wield a significant amount of power and they should be wary and watchful for potential issues. #catholicedchat
learning is experiential. You dont let kids drive without practice and soldiers go to boot camp. Give them an environment to explore & prepare and the safety net to ask questions they need to answer. Then watch them be brilliant and fail gloriously and get back up #catholicedchat
I like this definition. What are you using your platform to promote? Your self? Brands? What COULD you be doing with it? So many awesome kids doing great stuff with social media. BooksThroughMyEyes on instagram TheLivBits on here are two great examples #CatholicEdChat

Well, we parents grew up with all this in the moment. Lord of the Flies case study - where there are no norms, the society will create norms. And we chose poorly in many cases. #catholicedchat

A2. We use Twitter to help students connect what they're reading with their own language, lives & experiences. Fusing social media with textual study of #HuckFinn helps us teach social justice and the wages of deception & sin. Kids LOVE it: https://t.co/suEy4Xspp7#catholicedchat
A2 #DIGCIT are important life skills for students today and tomorrow. Same reason we teach anything else! Added factor is the permanence of digital actions; ie., tattoo, footprint. #catholicedchat
had a brief discussion about digital discipleship in #digcit on friday as we are preparing for our next unit. Students as change-agents beyond retweet-advocacy is going to be a key for catholic schools. Hard to be a warrior for justice from your couch... #catholicedchat
A2: As Catholics, it is a moral imperative for us to treat people with dignity- online or off. If our goal is to get our students to heaven, we *better* teach digital citizenship! Because it is can be an incredible trap. #catholicedchat
A3. COMMON SENSE EDUCATION - Digital Citizenship. Everything educators need to empower the next generation of digital citizens.

our dean of students and i tag team a number of our individual conversations with students who make bad choices. We often open the conversation with "was this done as your best possible self?" :) They know...they just forget. 1/2 #catholicedchat
I think it comes as a result of the bio-feedback of online being so foreign. They "feel" safe & only cognitively communicate w/ 3-6 people in a forum (like we have for millions of years)...when we point out the small group has 200 kids, they always look sheepish #catholicedchat

A3. Lessons for G3–8! Digital Citizenship Curriculum. These lessons take on timely topics for school communities with improved classroom tools & prepare students to take ownership of their digital lives.
LINK: https://t.co/zkSkCuv24w#catholicedchat
A4. Get online & start using the same platforms that our students enjoy. Set up a school @Snapchat & a @Twitter profile, then consider having regular "social media takeovers" where individual students tell your school's story from their eyes for a day. POWERFUL! #CatholicEdChat
A4: It's interesting because students will use e-mail but will not address teachers. They just start writing or even just use the subject line. I think by first teaching them how to address an adult in an e-mail. Dear Mr./Mrs./Miss #catholicedchat
A4. When communicating with Ss online address them appropriately & expect Ss to behave as they would in class. Correct spelling, formal greetings, & polite lang are ways to be respectful online. Reward good digital etiquette like you would good behavior in class. #catholicedchat
My feeds are open for students to follow and chat (safe harbor in the sea). We discuss how to choose posts, what the things we post say about our lives interior and exterior, we analyze the effect of the feeds coming into our minds and hearts... #digcit#catholicedchat
A4. My kids know I use twitter, they know I use instagram, but they found accounts...best compliment they give me is "your stuff is boring" #CatholicEdChat
If they're looking for trolling, they looked at the wrong accounts.
5. What is the role of parents? How can we involve parents in #digcit education and assist them in teaching children to use tech responsibly and safely #catholicedchat
A4. Students need to be shown how to create secure passwords and taught basic password etiquette. Educators need to adhere to password rules by not sharing their passwords or asking students to share online access. #catholicedchat

If they're looking for trolling, they looked at the wrong person.
A3: @Tolerance_org remains the gold standard for thoughtful lesson plans geared towards social justice. Here’s a great resource from them on digital citizenship/literacy. https://t.co/CHqd8nfnff#CatholicEdChat
5. some of our most well attended sessions tend to be ones where we talk social media/tech/and teens. Parents are hungry for knowledge and scared by the combined unknown and media scare-for-clicks complex. Open those lines of communication up! #catholicedchat
another good point, JD. You can't unsee some pictures and we have to be mindful of that with our students minds and hearts. I remember how people reposted something from Fr. Pavone and I still can't get that picture out of my head. #CatholicEdChat
A4. Ts should explain the difference bw professional & personal communication online. While you should use proper digital etiquette in the classroom, make sure Ss understand the distinction. Teaching Ss proper ‘netiquette’ is fundamental to digital citizenship. #catholicedchat
we are adding formal vs. informal discernment as the 2nd step of our communication etiquette in #digcit... I am looking forward to being called to the carpet in this next unit. :) #catholicedchat
A5 We had Jesse Weinberger come in to speak a few years ago. Powerful stuff. Unfortunately, the parents who needed to hear her message weren’t there. #catholicedchat. https://t.co/p28WjIbj1f
A5. I send out a weekly student showcase newsletter to families to let them know what's going on in our course, and offers actual discussion prompts for conversations they might consider striking up at the dinner table to foster dialogue. https://t.co/qcPwqGE6q2#catholicedchat
A4 @gcouros recommends using SM to showcase everyday classroom events, learning. Our doing so would be a way model #digcit and even school spirit! #CatholicEdChat
A5. Parents and caregivers have firsthand knowledge of the impact of devices and media on Ss' lives. Even so, research on Ss' media use is compelling and eye-opening and can establish the 'why' for your digital citizenship program. #catholicedchat
still getting used to my no-FB world, but it has generally been a positive in my life. trying to figure out how to share that experience without being preachy...might be a better one-on-one chat with some of the #digcit kids as they reflect #catholicedchat
A5. Parents need to educated so they can partner with their children. Great evening at St Felicitas with a session on digital citizenship for parent. #CatholicEdChat
A5. We know S learning is strengthened when families and educators are on the same page. Families can reinforce the lessons through conversations and expectations at home. And Ts can help Ss navigate the digital dilemmas they face in and out of school. #catholicedchat
slowly teaching the adults to use EOM subject lines if they must or slack/hangouts -- our number one discernment of online com.etiquette is "what tool is best for the message/inquiry that you have? :) #digcit#catholicedchat
Also depends on what you chose to engage in... as you know, I follow family & snarky humor pages. Kittens & theology jokes... very skilled in just scrolling past the faux news & anger #catholicedchat
I remember the first time I saw something like this....I didn't know what the ghost was...Snapchat! I think this one might need an update because G+ is closing, right? #CatholicEdChat
we did a showing of it last year at the school and a discussion afterwards. The discussion was MUCH better than the showing...it is not the most balanced view, but that is also not its intent. #catholicedchat
ha! when your family is "faux news and anger" :) #catholicedchat -- real change takes time, trust, relationship, and conversation --> nobody changed their heart by tweet. #catholicedchat
A6. Ts in my school had to become Common Sense Certified Educators; a community of innovative folks who believe in the power of technology to transform learning & who know that digital citizenship is an essential foundation for effective digital teaching. #catholicedchat
ha! when your family is "faux news and anger" :) #catholicedchat -- real change takes time, trust, relationship, and conversation --> nobody changed their heart by tweet. #catholicedchat
A2 Digital Citizenship is simply teaching safe and responsible life skills. Remember when you would get a “Good Citizenship” certificate in grade school for cleaning up or having good manners? Eventually we will just go back to calling it citizenship. #CatholicEdChat
A6 We could do more, but right now each grade, K - 8, gets a full quarter of digital citizenship/literacy instruction in their weekly or bi-weekly tech classes. #catholicedchat
We previewed it a couple years ago and decided not to show it at school bc some stories almost too dramatic. But I know schools do show it. #CatholicEdChat
A6. Why become a Common Sense Educator? Earn a badge that publicly affirms your commitment to helping Ss think critically & use tech responsibly to learn, create, & participate. Build confidence teaching digital citizenship & integrating tech into your classroom. #catholicedchat
A5:Another good thing for parents to keep in mind- most terms of service require users be at least 13. So it’s troubling to me to see so many young kids on Instagram etc. particularly when it’s clear they’re unsupervised #CatholicEdChat
A6: Continue to talk about Digital Citizenship, modeling good DC, and make time to address topics. I need to be better about setting aside time to have discussions about digital citizenship. #catholicedchat
A4 As educators and parents we have a responsibility to educate ourselves about how to navigate in the digital world in a positive way. We can’t abdicate to a certain class or the computer lab. #CatholicEdChat
Great idea! We have several teachers who do the same. I am always surprised when parents like a post I have made on my public channels. Great way to share successes and model social media use in positive, constructive ways. #CatholicEdChat
A5 Parents are bombarded with the Screen Shaming and media panic. They need help to see the value and our best resource in doing so is the kids! Empower kiddos to teach the adults. I see many adults behaving way worse than kids in digital spaces! #CatholicEdChat
A6 I recently attended a parent workshop on balanced used of technology. Going to post some of those resources on our 1:1 school web page. We embed in our formation curriculum otherwise and teachable moments across school. #CatholicEdChat
A6 #CatholicEdChat We need to build capacity to talk about digital citizenship from a faith lens too! So much of Catholic Social Teaching aligns with Digital Citizenship Principles.
