Hey #XPLAP, Dave Kolb, 7th Grade Math in Genoa, IL. My favorite things at recess involved sports. Basketball and Football were the go-tos for my friends and I.
Hello everyone. I am Michael Matera. 6th grade teacher, author of #XPLAP and Youtuber. https://t.co/SB0FREshu7
I loved to climb at recess. We used to try to climb up the stone church.
😊 We may have invented it. Basically it was tag in the snow with lots of "pods" carved out that was safe. Everyone had stay in the "snow path" and run from pod to pod. I can't remember why we didn't just hang out in the pods...maybe there was a limit?? #XPLAP
Oh kickball! I loved kickball. We have a Teacher Student game every year at our Spring Fling. The teachers always win! (with some creative reinterpretations of the rules ;) #XPLAP
A1: I’ve been trying to figure out how to extend. Most students bus in and out. Lots of different lunches. Some are at other sites throughout the day. #xplap
A1 My kiddos do not have recess time (they sure could use it), but I could see them collaborating/competing in their teams from my classroom. Or maybe hide some item cards on the playground. #XPLAP
A1 I have HS but I was just thinking about turning a boss battle into a Catapult Activity. Earn "Balls" by answering Questions. Build your own catapult. Knock down a Dragon or something... Work in Progress... #XPLAP
A scavenger hunt would be better outside because you have more open spaces and more areas to hide items. Even though you have more liability being outside, the potential is huge! #XPLAP
A1: For one of my adventure paths. Ss had to find Jade idols that were hidden all around. Trick was no one could see you take one or have one. Had to return it to me in secret. the playground was filled with them. It was EPIC! #XPLAP
A1: When we are studying the Hunger Games student have to have some physical strength and ability to gain an edge against their competitors. They compete both physically and mentally. #xplap
A1. I had a side quest 5 for 5 challenge of sorts. Ss had to play with someone they didn't usually interact with on 5 consecutive days to earn some XP early in the year to encourage including everyone in the fun of recess #XPLAP
A1: At the start and the middle of the year I play a giant game of the floor is lava with my students on the playground. It is super fun. This is just to be a kid for a moment again, it has nothing to do with my game. #XPLAP
A simple idea would be to hide Easter Eggs of some sort with quests inside on the playground. If you have a kid that hangs to the edges you could even hide it where they are likely to find it. #XPLAP
during our freshman bridge week Ss get an E,C,H, or S on their badge. They have to sit at a lunch table with students that make the ECHS (our school initials). It forces them to mix with new people. #XPLAP
This is something truly special @MrPowley thanks for sharing this idea. It truly put a little tear in my eye. That is having your game make a difference for the culture at your school. Way to go. #XPLAP in action!

I can't take credit for that one but thanks... We do a ton of culture building in these 3-4 day summer sessions before Freshman year. It really makes a difference. #XPLAP
Excellent idea. We're halfway through the year and could probably use a good reminder to mix things up. May have to consider another culture building push like this #xplap
A2: I have some kahoot challenges at recess during my olympic games. Past students in 7th and 8th can come in and earn points for thier former city-state. #XPLAP
Thinking of the "Make it Stick" learning science, what if you had are you as smart as a 6th grader (or what ever grade) and have present students challenge former students on units they are studying to see if the older kids still remember it. #XPLAP
A2 It would be cool to have some sort of battle between players from across grade levels. Each grade level could nominate players or have qualifiers to represent each one. Maybe some sort of Olympics type event covering several days. #XPLAP
A2: have never really thought about doing something like that at recess, but makes sense. Something like a scavenger hunt could be interesting or a photo hunt challenge #XPLAP
A3: The last three days I have played a game with some of my advisees during study hall. It has been fun. They really like these new games I have found. Tons of laughs and good times. #XPLAP
We played the grown up version of Ticket to Ride the other day. My 8 year old knew the 1st journey version and as able to quickly pick this up. So fun! #xplap
A3: Not my day, but my week. Sunday after church and dinner is extended family board game night. Splendor is our new favorite. Just got Isle of Skye, can't wait to try it Sunday! #XPLAP
I play football with a large group of kids EVERY day at recess. It keeps many of them from playing too rough and it is a great release for me every afternoon as well. #xplap
Planning some cross-grade games as we speak. Our school has a house system, with 5-8 graders all spread among 4 teams. K-4 are on teams for one year as a whole class - bigs and littles will be competing as a team #xplap
A3 I've got a couple of mobile games that I check in on during my free time. I also play the in-class games with kids during our regular classes. During study hall I like to find brain teasers to put on the board, not only for the kids, but myself. #XPLAP
Love Splendor, I hope you saw Mila and I review it on my youtube channel. Also Isle of Skye is one of my favorite board games. Seriously out of the hundreds I owen I would put it in top 10. #XPLAP
I still have Pandemic that I want to try... And Sushi Go... We loved Ticket to Ride and we tried out Uno Attack which our 5 and 8 year old really got a kick out of... I've heard of good things about Splendor #XPLAP
Thanks for the support. The channel is fun and I love the community that is growing there. More comments each week. Thanks for being part of it all. #XPLAP
It was a Christmas break hit. My son and his wife stayed up until 2:00 playing it. Your kids might also like Exploding Kittens. It has a wide appeal, easy to learn and a short play time. #XPLAP
So much to like about this. Too often we get caught up with the idea that a makerspace has to be tech or creating something. There is so much critical thinking with games. @VRELibrary something to consider. #XPLAP

Right there with you. From the main message of your post to the pop culture references within. It's not easy, but knowing/accepting that life isn't the carefully framed view that EDU twitter can sometimes make it seem to be is a step in the right direction for all of us. #XPLAP
