Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
A1: it's about removing barriers and/or providing the necessary supports in order to give individuals what they need so they can be successful. We can't achieve quality learning with a one-size fits all approach. That leaves too much at risk. #iaedchat
A1 When I hear equity I think about a level playing field for all our students, then I realize we have a long way to go before anything is level #IAedchat
A1: I think about access and oppourtunity. Access to instruction at their level, access to great teachers, access to activities, access to...you name it. #iaedchat
A1: Equity means ALL students get similar opportunities to find success. Equity plays a huge role in schools and we need to set up systems to provide equity in educational experiences for ALL students. #IAedChat
A1: All kids (and families) having an opportunity to the same experiences. Some will need more supports than others, but the opportunity should be the same. We have much work to do. #iaedchat
A1: To me, equity means that ALL students have a fair and equal opportunity to grow from where they are. We have to work hard in schools to assure that every student is able to show growth. #iaedchat

A great person to follow for equity in education is @nhannahjones She will throw out some hard truths, and it's worth hearing them because no one should be sacrificed. #iaedchat
Just being a fly in the ointment but is ALL students a possibility with equity? I feel it is, but it is a lofty goal for a profession with so much differentiation #iaedchat
A1: Equity = advocating for all stockholders, especially our students of diverse backgrounds. It's about providing the correct supports for individual learners! #IAedchat
A1. When we talk about equity, we are talking about being fair and impartial for all Ss. But in certain circumstances in learning, we need to take other things in to account for each individual student. #iaedchat
I hope not, but I worry that equity may come down to "Close to all students" We did not say that long ago that some kids just fall through the cracks and we are still fighting that fight #iaedchat
A2: we must start doing better because all students have the possibility to do amazing things if we give them access! We don’t get to decide who will make a difference in the world but we can help them get there! #iaedchat
A2: We've got to start looking beyond the traditional models of teacher directed learning and think about how student choice and voice can be seamlessly integrated. We must be aware of how our personal lens impacts our interactions w/students, families, and each other #iaedchat
A2: Schools need to have a system in place to make sure that every student is well connected with at least one adult who knows them very well, and will advocate for them and collaborate with whomever it is necessary for the student's success. #iaedchat
A2: We need to start listening to the needs of our kids and their families. Provide them with the opportunity to talk and they will tell us. We need to do a better job of meeting them where they are, not where we want them to be. #iaedchat
I hope not, but I worry that equity may come down to "Close to all students" We did not say that long ago that some kids just fall through the cracks and we are still fighting that fight #iaedchat
A2: We should begin looking at our currently reality in our system. What is counterproductive to equity for all? Identify and break down barriers. Close the knowing and doing gap! From theory to practice! #iaedchat
A2 #iaedchat we have to do a better job of evaluating what unintentional barriers are placed in Ss paths and figure out how to remove them. Without this, we continue to get the same results no matter what strategies are in place.

A2: We need to start to with a definition of "educating?" What's the baseline standard of "education" we believe in for all students? From there, the logical move is to ensure "equity of access" to that standard for all children. #iaedchat
A2 #iaedchat we have to do a better job of evaluating what unintentional barriers are placed in Ss paths and figure out how to remove them. Without this, we continue to get the same results no matter what strategies are in place.
When I see Ss who fall into the non-equity spectrum, school or society does not matter, it makes me angry, but resolved to continue to strive toward the goal of ALL Ss #iaedchat
Absolutely, Terri! Those connections are so critical and help our well connected as well as our most fragile learners have a necessary lifeline. #iaedchat
A2: Having more meaningful conversations with students and parents. The social-emotional and intellectual development of a child is a team effort. Ask and listen. #iaedchat
A2: We've got to start looking beyond the traditional models of teacher directed learning and think about how student choice and voice can be seamlessly integrated. We must be aware of how our personal lens impacts our interactions w/students, families, and each other #iaedchat
A2. 1st- We need to get to know our students and their learning styles. 2nd- We need to work collaboratively to help all teachers reach all learners. #iaedchat
I see more stakeholders being aware of the inequities and letting their voices be heard - more than when I started in education. We’re moving in the right direction! #IAedChat
A3: We make it a norm in our teams at both the district and building level. We've recognized that collectively we have great potential and we need to hear many voices. Variety of ways to give feedback has helped those quiet ones feel confident to voice their ideas. #iaedchat
A2 #IAedChat
How do we engage all students and allow them voice in their learning @DrRussQ What are they passionate about and how do we as teachers connect to their learning goals? This should be true for all learners not just those that are ‘proficient’.
A3 #iaedchat technology has been a great equalizer in promoting student voice. There are online groupchats for the class that allow each student to contribute and have the teacher moderate.
A3: This is not a mind blowing strategy. We must create time, space, and safety for this to occur. This sounds simple, but there is a whole lot of relationship building and trust to serve as the foundation before people will step up. #iaedchat
A3 we must b intentional in celebrating the voices of our Ss. We must teach students the value in sharing and giving their views and ideas. WE MUST LISTEN FIRST NOT REACT OR SPEAK. Class meetings are a great place to start #iaedchat
I agree, Brian. When we turn away a student's voice or anyone's voice, we are telling them, intentionally or unintentionally, that they don't matter. Not the message we want to send, I bet. #iaedchat

A3: As a HS Eng. teacher, we establish early on that all voices are to be respected. It's incumbent on me, however, to structure discussion that allows us to practice this, as well as provide opportunity to kids to express their voices to just me or to everyone. #iaedchat
Tech can give a voice to those who may not want to say it aloud or need more time to think on an idea but feel comfortable submitting ideas in writing or through other means. Great point, Mike. #iaedchat
I agree with @danbutler and I have seen thins in my years in the classroom. When students feel safe in a classroom, they are more apt to take risks their learning. It does go back to building relationships with students. #iaedchat
A3: In addition, we have to ensure districts provide reasonable forums for parents and community to safely share their voices. Likewise, administration must create a culture where teachers and staff feel safe to express their voice. #iaedchat
Moving yes, but at the right pace? I know we can be doing more for not just students of color, but students of alternate walks of life There are so many Ss who need to be listened to and fought for in our classrooms We cant slow down #iaedchat
A3 #IAedChat Empowering teachers and students to engage as partners in learning is essential. We need to hear teachers voices as they support their learners.
A4 Apathy; I still see too much "we're doing the best we can" and then the settling starts With Ss who need advocates we can't be apathetic; we need to charge ahead full steam #iaedchat
A4: How inclusive are we? Do teachers see all kids as their kids? Does bias color our lens about where kids come from, family dynamics, neighborhood, SES, etc? Do we blame achievement on these factors? #iaedchat
A4: the biggest barrier is to stop showing the right and wrong way to do things...give options, not an afterthought of how to show understanding...stop having kids “play” school to our expectations, build a community of respect and trying new things. #iaedchat
A4: Reducing boxed/canned curriculum. I think, too, lessening the focus on standardized assessments and results and placing more emphasis on taking risks.
This is a loaded question - the list goes on! #iaedchat
A4. We need to do the best we can to ignore labels that get attached to students. We also need to help labeled students believe in themselves again. #iaedchat
We need to eradicate the deficit mindset & we can start that by eliminating thoughts/phrases that begin with... “these kids can’t do this...” “those teachers can’t do that...” #iaedchat
The issue of "respect" grinds my gears. As adults, even at the elementary level, we walk a fine line of wanting to reinforce the importance of respect as a social skill but we get caught up in how being disrespected makes adults feel. You're _age_, the kid's 9, move on. #iaedchat
We need to eradicate the deficit mindset & we can start that by eliminating thoughts/phrases that begin with... “these kids can’t do this...” “those teachers can’t do that...” #iaedchat
A4: What can we control? Fed, safe, and loved students @ school, build relationships w/ home, understand ACEs & provide a safe space, extension & interventions early, and strengthen the core. Be intentional about what we can do to know better - do better for ALL kids. #IAedChat
A4: At the secondary level, we have to ensure access to tech/Internet. We also have to examine our course requirements. We have a barrier between school and post-school life that can be easily removed with more, easier internship/voc. options.
#iaedchat
A4 adults in our schools must understand that the world is moving much faster, we need to prepare for an uncertain future, The dynamics of families have changed its up to us to adjust not the students #iaedchat
A4: we’ve been talking lately about how being a reader isn’t just reading a novel, it could be an article, a magazine, a manual...think outside the box&model that for students, don’t pigeon hole any of the practices, you could even read with your ears #readingisreading#iaedchat
Let’s shift the focus so our schools are centered around students & what’s best for them; as opposed to just being centered around the adults! #iaedchat
Q5: Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code says, “You cannot be what you cannot see.” What can we do to help ALL kids find a passion, purpose, and plan for their future? #iaedchat
A4b schools should be and need to be about kids not about our personal agendas it is easy for all of us even the most compassionate people to lose track of that over time #iaedchat
Q5: Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code says, “You cannot be what you cannot see.” What can we do to help ALL kids find a passion, purpose, and plan for their future? #iaedchat
A4: #iaedchat I think we need to continue to evaluate how instruction is delivered in the classroom and to which students. Most of a class reading about zoo animals from a text while a select few get to see the animals at a zoo is a barrier that doesn't need to be.
A5 Help Ss figure out who they may be & how to figure our who they are eventually When Ss know who they are, they understand their needs. Its all about relational awareness and understanding #iaedchat
A5: Don't be afraid to let a student know more than you do about their passion. Let them become experts and share their knowledge with others, including you! #iaedchat
Q5: Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code says, “You cannot be what you cannot see.” What can we do to help ALL kids find a passion, purpose, and plan for their future? #iaedchat
A5 we need to give students the time to explore and we need to be assistants in their search for their passions. We must differentiate, provide choice and continue to grow and take risks to engage Ss in that behavior #iaedchat
A5: Give them opportunities to discover their passions with after school groups, STEAM rooms, makerspaces, collaborative teams, etc. They can’t find their passion if they don’t know it exists. #IAedChat
#iaedchat A5: exposure. Ss need to experience a variety of mediums and ideas to find their passion. Open ended projects that call on kids to use skills learned to teach others has worked in my classroom.
A5: first we have to get them to school and then we have to show them how fun learning can be! Model that learning is fun, be motivated, show your passion and you’ll see it back from students and other teachers! Help find their curiosity! #iaedchat
I agree. It's easier to say, "Well, if they would have worked harder, studied, or whatever, they would have done better." Yeah, well so would have teaching them with their passions in mind, their voice heard, and their needs supported. #iaedchat
A5 #iaedchat We need to set up the experience so the Ss can experience what it means be act, think, be a musician, mathmetician, scientist, fill in the blank. Help them experience it!
A5. Giving our Ss different opportunities in learning to investigate where their true passion may lie through exploration! Support them and share your passion to learn! #iaedchat
#iaedchat
Yes!! I learned so much from my students, I even learned to skateboard from one of mine who had to spend some after school time with me so that he didn’t cause trouble with his friends! I wasn’t this cool but I did do it in heels #win#iaedchat
A5 #IAedChat
How do we help students see school as a place where they have some control over pace, path and what they are learning? Is school student centered where they are given as much choice as possible. Working in passion areas does a lot for engagement, for adults too.
Finding a passion begins by having time & space to pursue things that are of interest. Let kids drive & own their learning. Start by giving them some time & space. #iaedchat
A5: As far as helping them find and foster a passion, we have to allow them to read and read every day, and to experience life opportunities as much as possible. #iaedchat
A6 I love this question fair is the same expectations but the approach is different for each student. What works for one doesn’t work for all. It is about providing the opportunity for students to grow emotionally and academically. Communicate clearly & kids get it #iaedchat
A6: It impacts us because we have to do the very hard work of finding out what each person needs in order to learn, so we can provide them with a fair chance to be successful. #iaedchat
A6: to me it’s all about choices, opportunities&chances. once I encouraged kids to try a speech w notecards or w/o them to see what they liked, one student chose w/o and he said that was bad, can I try again with notecards tomorrow? Yes, yes you can #iaedchat remember @warooner
A6. This goes back to several illustrations people have posted tonight. When creating equity, not everyone should get the same supports. We need to differentiate to match the need of the student. #iaedchat
A6. Again, rapport. You will find out what they need, whether it be a caring adult, school supplies, someone to cheer them on at a track meet... we do it all. #greatTeachersAreOmniscient#iaedchat
A6. I think when it comes to the gap Ss, who qualify for free and reduced lunch. These Ss may be receiving other programs in the school as well , so they do not fall behind in learning! #iaedchat
A6: As a community we must set the bar high, and then build the necessary scaffolding to get each student over it. The supports may be different but the goal must be the same. #IAedchat
A7 as planning is in progress for next year we are working on creating a new mission, vision and core values that will reflect the idea of equity #iaedchat
I always tried to push myself out of my comfort zone in the classroom...I think that gave me some street cred as they say 😏 #iaedchat I still do...I’ll try anything, I just went to my first Star Wars movie the other night...I am still trying to figure out what Chewbacca said 🤔
A7: As a staff, we will be completing the Intercultural Development Inventory of IDI in order to become aware of our cultural development. We will then set goals for how we can move along the continuum. #iaedchat
A7: Even though I teach about 700 students, I will continue to do my best to get to know them as individuals, so that I can provide the best level of support for each student. #iaedchat
A7. As we are planning for next year, keep equity in mind, and also differentiate the lessons needed for the specific needs of special learning of a child.#iaedchat
Thanks to tonight's participants and my partners in moderating @danpbutler and @duffysclassroom!

A7: Our team is working to put systems in place that will help to identify our students in most need of supports, earlier in hopes of helping more students experience success with our limited resources. #Iaedchat
