What a fun #SSChat coming up with a special appearance from @FANgeopolitics ! If ya don’t know, know now—one heck of a fun tool that this World History teacher loves utilizing!
Quick twitter etiquette PSA: We welcome differing points of view, but want to keep it positive & productive in our #sschat community. As we would expect from our own students, sometimes we have to agreeably disagree!
A1: Will North Korea participate in the Games after a special invitation from South Korea?
Can the Games bring US, South, and North together? i.e. https://t.co/qa90o4SBVQ#sschat
A1: My name is Kathryn Byars and I teach World History and AP World History. I'm actually know very little about the olympics so I'm here to gain knowledge and insight! #sschat
A1) Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS and also one of the #sschat co-leaders. I LOVE the Winter Olympics! Haven't been following storylines yet but fired up!
#sschat A1: Can I hijack a question—What are some of the more popular Winter Olympic sports y'all are interested in? I live and die for Short Track, man. I wish it was a year-round thing, not just 4 years.
A1: Pyeongchang will be the first-ever Winter Games city to award over 100 gold medals, with a record number of countries participating!
Will #Mexico win a medal in their first-ever Winter Olympics?
See the google slides on https://t.co/HYjNwcK69U for more! #sschat
A1) I seem to remember that, in a previous Olympics (within the last few years?), there was a unified Korean team. Don't remember which one. Hopefully didn't hallucinate it. #sschat
A1 - SS dept chair from Suburb of Chicago. I hope that this winter (and the next summer games) are competitions where refugees and others who have left their once-homeland find success #sschat
#sschat A1: This North Korea / South Korea story is making @cnn right now—sounds like the South is a bit worried about making concessions to the North in its invitation? BTW, isn’t it awfully late to invite/disinvite?
Hi everyone, it’s me Darren! I teach government & economics at @csdriverside. Always love reading individual stories of determination in their Olympic journeys. #sschat
Short track speed skating is awesome! I also really like luge and skeleton though it scares me to watch. Downhill skiing. Guess I'm a couch speed demon! #sschat

Hey #sschat ... Dennis from a #STEAM school in Florida where I teach US History in the Green Dragon Classroom ... favorite storyline ... how the poor kid who didn't have parents spend $1000s of dollars on special coaches wins a gold Medal.
Jan. 18! A free online program for grades 6-12: Presidential Powers w/ Documents from @USNatArchives. Explore the executive branch through #primarysourceshttps://t.co/ty6UQS3I1y This is part of the Presidential Primary Sources Project theme, Presidential Legacy #ppsp2018#sschat
A2: #sschat I've never done an Olympic themed lesson; but I'd love to @Skype a class from another country after an event to talk about their perspectives.
Hey #sschat! Hard to not squeeze in a few minutes when my phone’s blowing up with half of the @TalkinSS crew already involved 😉 I’m Amy Presley, the third @TalkinSS quarter & I teach APWH & East Asia Hist in OK
Q2 - Judith from Virginia - I'm working with English teacher who is researching world countries. We are then following each country's progress in the Olympics - their stories. #sschat
A2 I have a SMARTnotebook Olympic style review game with editable questions to make it whatever you want. Mention miracle on ice in USHistory Cold War unit to exemplify the rivalry throughout all aspects of life #sschat
#sschat A2 Over the past four years, we have been fortunate to have Mike Eruzione share his story with our 1980s class. Engages the Ss to here his view of the Miracle on Ice.
A2) I did some with Vancouver games in 2010. They had a lot of resources about environmentalism, the #Paralympics, etc. that helped my students learn more than just what was on tv #sschat
Matt from Pennsylvania, teach civics and government to freshman and leadership to seniors currently have taught US/World history! #sschat
So far? Well this of course! :-)
https://t.co/Ys8EJ8AiUA
A2 - One year I went crazy and had the students' faces on the Olympic sports figures. Covered the entire bulletin board with winter Olympics sports. Might try it again this year. Had a good bit of buy-in. #sschat
A2- A student was doing a '20% project' on taxpayer funded stadiums, so with encouragement he included research on American state/federal financing and $$$ guarantees to host cities in attempts to bid for Olympics #sschat

A1: Kirstyn from South Florida! Excited to see if the Olympics has the ability to bridge the gap between N/S Korea. Also, how Russia will deal with the ban! #sschat
A2 I have integrated the Olympics in the past when teaching Ancient Civ but I can't say it was particularly exciting. It was a "fun packet". 😳 😂 Looking to be more engaging this time for sure! #sschat
Q3: How can we use the upcoming Olympics to teach and learn more about the Korean Peninsula, the Korean War, and/or U.S. foreign relations there?
Clear links. Full resources. Can't lose!
#sschat
Very humble! All about the team! Scored the winning goal v USSR but told Ss we still had 9 minutes to play. Told Ss if they lost to Finland, may not have won a medal. #sschat
For those who don’t remember/know. In 88’ the doves were released prior to the lighting of the eternal flame...and it wasn’t good. And the world was watching on TV #sschat
#sschat A3: I love teaching World History backwards, so for me, it’s a heck of a time to review the Cold War, esp in regards to Russia? Whoa, getting too deep...
Looking for a non-history teacher who earned National Boards for Social Studies Early Adolescence. Anyone know someone? #sschat#worldgeochat#NBCTStrong
A3) Not only #Olympics2018, but students are naturally curious about happenings in Korea. In our current world climate, harness this curiosity for learning! I'm also excited to see Korean culture on display. What will the opening ceremonies be like!? Hmm #sschat
#sschat A3 I would first reflect on the boycotts of the summer of 1980/1984. Focus on the idea that nations came together to compete in athletics rather than continue their fights against each other.
A3 this is where I feel I don’t have anything concrete ready to go, but would be fun to speculate the pageantry of a 🇰🇵host. 150k seat stadiums, unfinished skyscrapers as an unhealthy love of parades? Ss imaginations could run wild #sschat
The Olympics provides excellent resources for incorporating visual thinking, multiple literacies, and mapping data. We use it to facilitate lots of lessons including #medialiteracy. #sschathttps://t.co/zQz447s8VM
A3 I am planning on doing a classroom @StudentEdcamp on the Olympics that would allow Ss to come up with topics/activities that might include sports, storylines, politics, etc. #sschat
A3: I'm going to try to tie in current events in the region and discuss the historical implications also its a great time to discuss how countries that have conflict come together for this event and the propaganda the games create #sschat

I am so excited to gather stuff for my EAH students. They are super curious about Korea due to recent political events & genuinely want to learn about the history there #sschat

A3: We've been curating links about the Korean Peninsula as a case study at https://t.co/C0ZN9EZ3ok#sschat
The Korean War is one of the most significant Cold War events that students have no clue about. There was no formal treaty to end to the war, which explains a lot today!
Used Reconstructing the South: A Role Play https://t.co/nyKm7PGXOT from @ZinnEdProject along w/scene selections from @PBS Reconstruction: The Second Civil War to create much more effective lessons/discussion on this topic in #APUSH classes. Would love other ideas. #sschat
A3 I am planning on doing a classroom @StudentEdcamp on the Olympics that would allow Ss to come up with topics/activities that might include sports, storylines, politics, etc. #sschat
A2 Haven't done it, but can envision a Fantasy style geo game that's interdisciplinary w/math & gives points based on smaller countries getting more points for medals than dominant countries. Could also tie in countries' being in news in other areas #sschat
A3 this is where I feel I don’t have anything concrete ready to go, but would be fun to speculate the pageantry of a 🇰🇵host. 150k seat stadiums, unfinished skyscrapers as an unhealthy love of parades? Ss imaginations could run wild #sschat
I remember this being discussed so much before the 2012 London Games since China's opening ceremonies were so amazing. I thought London's were good, too. Just different. #sschat
Definitely can use it as a precursor/review for the Cold/Korean war, how we have lingering resentment/unsolved issues with N. Korea, have we had controversial locations for the Olympics in the past, etc. #SSCHAT
A2 I just remembered I did an international foods day around the Olympics once. It was optional and took place during study hall/lunch. That was great! #sschat
This was a #China coming-out party for sure! Here's a great 60-Minutes segment involving that ceremony + global economics https://t.co/d4jW1Bnalv#sschat
Oh, I forgot that I had a fun lesson w/ the London opening. I shared pics and we talked about GB's the transformation from an agricultural society to an industrial one was seen in its opening ceremony. Here's those pics

It was the political rally that I remember picking apart with students. Seeing their eyes get huge when you pause it & point out how it was duplicated & spliced is sooo cool. They start getting critical of now too #sschat
#sschat A4 Nations/City States coming together in peace to compete on the athletic field. Love the Olympics because it allows individuals/teams to shine in sports that do not get regular coverage.
A4) I like to point out how there is competition that can reflect political tensions but also cooperation and unity. Love the closing ceremonies where the athletes are mill about together. #sschat
A4 - The Olympics remind us that for all the hullabaloo surrounding athleticism, sports & competition, that every country also cares about pageantry and spends big bucks on 'presentation'. #sschat
A4 Can have Ss investigate the inspirational stories of countries' athletes to break stereotypes, humanize others, & demonstrate countries are more than political policies #sschat
Totally stole it from Webster Univ prof Dr Salivorus. Got really excited when I saw CB had used some of his stuff - truly amazing Wducator & historian. Blessed to have had him as a guide as an undergrad #sschat
Q4) So much is wrapped up in the Olympics: nationalism, character ed (sportsmanship, overcoming obstacles), Ancient rituals/religion, interdependence, cultural diffusion, continuity and change over time....I wish they were more frequent! #sschat
Korean Film Archive on YouTube - over 100 Korean feature films, including Im Kwon-taek’s Sopyonje and Hong Sangsoo's The Day the Pig Fell Into a Well. https://t.co/Ra931aX98R#sschat
I enjoy the showcasing of cultures and regions by the media during the Olympics. The Ss can get a better feel for the athletes through the culture and region. #sschat
Sorry for dropping out of #sschat for the last few minutes, y’all. Just had to show a student the Catalan tradition of Caga Tio. https://t.co/w8otOgYqJU
Truth. That's another interesting component to explore with students - why countries want to host the Games and whether the reality lives up to expectations. Finances can get really ugly. #sschat
A4 - The Olympics remind us that for all the hullabaloo surrounding athleticism, sports & competition, that every country also cares about pageantry and spends big bucks on 'presentation'. #sschat
Kind of cool how they are alternating every two years now. Back in the day (pre-2000) you had to wait 4 years between both Olympics (both held in same years). #sschat
Q4) So much is wrapped up in the Olympics: nationalism, character ed (sportsmanship, overcoming obstacles), Ancient rituals/religion, interdependence, cultural diffusion, continuity and change over time....I wish they were more frequent! #sschat
Reminder that this year is the 50th anniversary of 1968 which was quite a year in U.S. history. Lots of retrospectives will be happening such as @TheAtlantic podcast (Radio Atlantic). #sschat
Quite a year indeed. In January I was a 2nd semester University Junior, by December, a Senior. Truly one of the most memorable years of my life. #sschat
A5: Always enjoy talking about government funding for athletes competing and how the US does not endorse it. Crazy weekend you see how much is involved & how companies spend/don’t spend on athletes #sschat
View this video clip to learn about talks between North and South Korea and its possible effects on the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.
https://t.co/SkZYTtVHq2#sschat
A5: Olympics are an amazing opportunity to talk about citizens freedoms: N Korean& Chinese athletes seeing western world and freedoms they are denied. See it firsthand #sschat
I have to leave early #sschat. Come back next week - I'll be hosting a talk on Civic Engagement - How can get get our Ss engaged and involved in local, state, national, and global communities? #civics#civicengagement
"Under new rules, people in NY prisons can only receive books from 5 certified vendors. They offer 5 junk sex novels, 14 bibles & religious books, 24 drawing/coloring books, 21 puzzle books, 11 guitar/chess/how-to books, 1 dictionary, 1 thesaurus. No other books can be sent in"
It might be amazing to ask Ss to envision storylines/headlines for future Olympic years. Would promote critical 💭 on current events and how they might look decades from now. #sschat#engchat
Q6: Any other questions or needs leading up to the Games that the @playfanschool team can help you out with? #sschat
We hope you’ll join us to compete for global competence (and fantastic prizes) in https://t.co/SylnqTqygK
BTW: I'll be spending quite a bit of time with everything new posted here and we will curate + organize at https://t.co/HYjNwcK69U for you! Stay tuned... #sschat
A college friend, John Zant, is a Sports writer in Santa Barbara. He was in Munich, reporting on the Olympics for the Santa Barbara News-Press. He will probably be happy to respond to Qs. https://t.co/CmOHPjmiYs#sschat
We'll probably make it live next week, but we'll let you know when we do. You'll for sure have a few good school weeks before the Opening Ceremony on 2/9 to compete! See https://t.co/ETjz8B9coc for a rundown of how it'll work... #sschat
Actually, real question: Will there be a way (like a league) where I can see all my students, how they’re doing, versus everyone else? And/or how they’re doing in context? #sschat
