#LangChat is dedicated to the discussion of topics associated with issues and trends in world language instruction and learning. Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.
¡Hola, #langchat! Cristina from Miami. I teach Spanish Pk-5th. It was awesome meeting many of you in Nashville. I'm still unpacking resources from amazing sessions... Wow!
A2 I like term "not monopolizing." It's not giving the class over to them, but not recognizing they are NOT blank slates that came with nothing to bring to the table. #langchat
Student voice can mean using feedback from students to make lessons more meaningful and engaging. Lots of times they'll make connections that I hadn't considered. #langchat
A2 Any form of expression that demonstrates Ss learning process - so important in steering the direction of the class and the community we build #langchat
A2) for me, “student voice” means giving students opportunities to direct what they study in language class, how they demonstrate understanding and how they connect their language study to their lives. #langchat
A2: I think it's also recognizing & admiting that the classroom is as much theirs as ours. Otherwise it would just be an oversized and tacky looking office #langchat

A2 student voice means to me that students have a say/vote/platform/comment box in topics and activities - it is extremely motivating to give them ownership and spark interest #langchat
There are students who can express their learning in ways that we don’t know. Allow them to prospose options & ask them to support their proposals w/evidence. #langchat
A2: to me “student voice” is student choice and buy-in to what we are learning “what do you WANT to learn within these parameters” —the more personal the better! #langchat
A3 I do hw reflections in English twice a month in which students write about their class experiences and it gives them a place to share their frustrations, excitement, thoughts etc. #langchat
Q3 Ooh ooh! I have "tickets" sts can fill out to give me back channel feedback. And I use Google Classroom questions to poll and elicit info on interests, etx #langchat
A3 #langchat Our French 2-AP Instagram, YouTube channel, Seesaw blogs feature student work. They vie for likes & shares and are proud to promote their language acquisition.
A3: I'm woefully low tech most of the time. I like little paper surveys, notes, notecards, show of hands. #langchat BUT I'm going to use @Flipgrid for our current novel study
Yes! Something as easy as google forms means that when we are doing a broad topic, like elections, Ss can fill out a form, independent of friend influence, in order to put them into groups to investigate a topic that they are truly passionate about. #langchat
A3 I see my students only once a week, so we rely a ton on Edmodo. After a rough 2nd half of semester w/scheduling & our novel, I ran a poll on how we should finish. Changed my whole syllabus! #langchat
A3: I️ love using @Mentimeter to make word clouds, have student voting and class conversations while keeping a voices-off environment #AmericanSignLanguage I’m exploring using @Flipgrid in the future for video-based activities #langchat
@edmodo helped us to connect with other classrooms in Spanish speaking countries and work on #pbl and language skills, so authentic, and we used @Flipgrid too #langchat Edmodo made #globalconnections possible

A3 giving them options for different assessments (music vs sports infographics, audio clips) as well as allowing them to explore ideas like YouTube channels and Skype/flipgrid. Also choosing songs for musique mardi/mercredi themselves (making playlists) #langchat
A2 it's important when students have ideas to try to at least implement part of it - encourages them to keep contributing and builds relationship #langchat
If there is one piece of feedback that I've heard from Ss at our school is that language teachers are warm, inclusive and great at building community. I'm proud of my department for being a safe place where most students feel comfortable enough to take risks. #langchat
A3: their voice is the tool and your lesson plan, letting them use it. I'll show something and see what they want to say about it and go from there. #langchat
A4 I hate to be contrarian, but I'll just remind us NOt to over use these. Person to person communication-face to face is powerful. We need a lot of that in our WL classes. #langchat
I also use @padlet for youtube - ask SS to find youtube videos about x topic - post- then go watch everyone's vids -discuss/write - SS get to pick vids that interest them, comprehensible to them, and saves me time! #win#langchat
I've used Padlet in meetings, but not in the classroom. I'm more interested in Flipgrid. My students do group video projects. I need to check out Flipgrid for that! #langchat
Q4: These tools allow for even the shy Ss to share their thoughts and ideas with myself and the class. It also allows for creativityand collaboration. We communicate with a school in France through @Flipgrid#langchat
A3. Google voice. Assigning a propmt for students for which they script their response and reply in speaking has led to an increase in comfort in spontaneous speaking in the classroom. #langchat
A4: I like posting a question on Flipgrid and having students respond to it while listening and learning from each other ex: what did you do in the weekend? Or describe your city to a pen pal #langchat
A4 I have to throwback to the tried and true art with paper, colored pencils, crayons, paint, etc (although I love using an iPhone template for them to draw on) #langchat
A4: We have @CanvasLMS students can submit recordings and we can grade using your own rubric. Seeing and hearing students sing Mi Gente is AMAZING!! #langchat
Maybe. But that’s an admin definition. They had a district rule that they should be able to hear at least 50% Ss voice during an observation. #langchat
A4 Tools like @Flipgrid and @padlet speak to this generation. Phones and tablets provide endless opportunities for collaboration. Beats workbook pages for homework and they are using TL #langchat
Agree! I try to have ss use Google Voice every other week. Since we were learning clothing I pretended to be a store employee and they were the shopper leaving a voicemail for the employee asking if the store had x,y,z that they wanted to buy. #langchat
Dear #langchat community in KY and nearby states. Tina Hargaden and Ben Slavic will be given their two day workshops April 15-16 in Louisville. Let me know if you would like more information. Thank you. @CIliftoff@KWLAonline@JCPSWorldLang
any #langchat teachers using @Snapchat ? apparently you can have a school "story" that anyone can add to - would be interesting to do a language story?
A5 This is my first year with a selective mute student. This week, he has a Google Doc where he writes what he *would* say if he were answering the question out loud; I can peek in from time to time to see what he's able to communicate. #langchat
A5 I came back from discussions at #actfl17 and #flanc17 looking for how I can tweak my curriculum to capture the passions of my reluctant ones. #langchat
A5: I allow Ss to use tools like @Flipgrid to record at home. @ChatterPixIt allows the Ss to create their own talking face which helps for those Ss who don’t even want to see their face. #langchat
A5 Arranging room with tables or paired desks sometimes helps students build confidence with small audience. Also: we practice general “conversation skills”: Pick a slip of paper and: 1. Provide info, 2. Ask ?s 4 more details, 3. Connect & react appropriately. #langchat
A5 Have used Google Voice, even using blogging to share ideas, encourage them to record it, and build up, using tools like Flipgrid and @RecapThat helps Ss build confidence, my Ss have said this a lot #langchat
A5 I adore @ChatterPixIt for making videos from pictures (can use celebs, historical figures, friends, family - I love to be Zidane, Marie Antoinette & Napoleon) helps for those who are video phobic #langchat
A4: i use tech for hw, sub days, and portfolios. Everything else good old people talking and writing with one another and interacting in person. #langchat
Just need to get more people to reply to all the different topics. My students LOVED listening to the different voices introducing themselves. Hoping to get a lot of natives too. But, HOW! #langchat#fslchathttps://t.co/CLXPOk22iO

I've found that video projects appeal to more reluctant students while building their confidence. I've never seen a student shaking in a video, but have in oral presentations in class... #langchat
Slightly off topic, but I read once if a shy kid is having issues hand them an ipad with an open note - text them and have them text you back what's going on- great for voice and private #langchat
For my lvl 1 Ss, I write a question and a “template” answer for them to get comfortable with the structure, then everyone takes a turn at answering. I call on more confident Ss first so that the reluctant Ss can hear a few examples before being thrown into the hotseat. #langchat
I also like to bask in the glory of my "fame" like "Yeah, that's my friend, NBD" with all the assessments. I thinkk they're disappointed I don't know the LAITS lady though #langchat

A6: using tools like @Flipgrid to connect my Ss to our partners hook in France. We’ve taken down the classroom walls and making the learning happen in and out of class. #langchat
A7 Personalized, meaningful learning. St investment in their language acquisition journey. Improved St/Teacher relationship! World peace...well maybe not. #langchat
GIRL. When my homie in Peru got her kids to answer questions, it was MAGICAL. I mean, yeah, they couldn't understand but maybe 1/2, but they were making ALL kinds of observations just based on what they could SEE because of @flipgrid! #langchat
