#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Good morning #leadupchat! I'm Todd, elementary principal in CA and co-moderator w my buddy @PrincipalPaul! Pumped to share ideas on how to make goals extraordinary!
Good morning from freezing CT! I’m a Dir. of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation in a small district in the northwest corner. Excited for this topic! #leadupchat

Good morning from freezing CT! I’m a Dir. of Curriculum, Instruction, and Innovation in a small district in the northwest corner. Excited for this topic! #leadupchat
A1: Resolutions are just statements that people make every year in my mind, by February they are gone. Goals are universally something we strive to make. There is more dedication in my view. #leadupchat
A:1- goal is something that's monitored to see progress! A resolution to me is more like a statement- "Something I want to achieve" the pre to the goal! #Leadupchat
A1: a resolution is often short lived and never works, a goal is something we are constantly working toward before we even made resolutions #leadupchat
A1: Never really thought about that. 😀 Perhaps a goal is a specific piece of a resolution, with the resolution being the larger cultural aspiration. #leadupchat
A1 Resolutions are usually broken by about now. Goals have more "meat". Goals are about having a purpose and taking actionable steps to achieve the vision! #leadupchat
A1 I see a goal as something that you have planned steps to accomplish. A resolution doesn't always have that which is why many of us aren't successful with resolutions. #LeadUpChat
A1: A resolution is statement created for a behavior I want to change. A goal is the outcome of a plan created for something I want to accomplish. #leadupchat
A1- to me, goals are more long term. When you make a resolution and you break it, you tend to give up. Goals, on the other hand, seem to be better at longevity. Goals allow you to focus on the big picture and not just the now #leadupchat
A1: I see a resolution as a hurry up and start idea whereas a goal is a longer term, habit forming approach. I. e. I will lose 15 lbs vs. I will lead a healthier lifestyle. #leadupchat
A1: I see a goal as something you hope to do, whereas a resolution is something you are determined to do. But both fall apart quickly without dilgent focus and dedication! #leadupchat
A1: A Goal is something with a purpose and a resolution is something done for a reason. There maybe a larger purpose to the reason but a resolution seems smaller to me. #leadupchat
Resolutions often seem more technical. Things that one just needs self discipline to do. Goals are more adaptive, take many steps and challenges to meet along the way. #leadupchat
A1: I see a resolution as a hurry up and start idea whereas a goal is a longer term, habit forming approach. I. e. I will lose 15 lbs vs. I will lead a healthier lifestyle. #leadupchat
A1. A goal is typically specific, measurable, attainable, results driven, and time bound. A Resolution is a broader version of a goal that is typically not attainable. #LeadUpChat
Goals have actions aligned to achieve them. Resolutions say, "Wouldn't it be great if..." but don't have much teeth to them. Perhaps that's why they fail so quickly. Sadly, sometimes our goals fall prey to the same destiny if we don't commit the resources. #leadupchat
A1- A resolution, to me, implies this is probably something we should do. Goals involve action, a PLAN, that needs team effort to accomplish. It's that "pie in the sky"....#leadupchat
Resolutions tend to be short term and fade away. Goals are typically more sustainable and measurable. But, a resolution can be shifted towards a goal quite easily in most cases. #leadupchat
Goal is a target something you are 'aiming for' that has planned steps and achievable targets and check ins - a resolution is something you think you 'should' do - #leadupchat
A1 Resolutions denote intent formally. I think if held to the truest form of the definition because they mark a change in mindset where a goals are great but have an endpoint. #leadupchat
Action plans are essential to a goal & most often exist with a real goal. Resolutions seem very pie in the sky- like. Why just dream when action can make it reality? Action action, we want action 👏👏👏 #leadupchat
A1 A goal is accompanied by certain action steps that ensure the goal is met. Resolutions are simply statements THAT should be followed by a goal. #leadupchat
A1. Resolutions seem more like declarations to me, a declaration of intention. A goal requires action, strategy, and progress monitoring. I prefer goals. #leadupchat
A1: goals are measurable versus resolutions are often more like feelings and emotions. I feel my resolutions often fall off, but goals are something I keep after #LeadUpChat
A1. A goal is a milestone, vs a resolution is a change in behavior due to a decision made. In my opinion, you need resolutions in order to meet your goals #leadupchat
A1: A resolution is something that you are striving to achieve. It may or may not be reasonable/attainable. A goal is something that has been planned out, has mini-goals embedded, in order to achieve the larger goal. #leadupchat
A1: Part 2--I think we need to think about three words actually--Resolution is what we resolve to do or be. Goals are the bite-sized chunks that make the resolution actionable. Action steps are what we commit to doing to meet our goals. #leadupchat
A1: The difference to me is that a resolution is a “what if” without any specific action to make the change. A goal implies that you have a plan to put energy into making your “what if” a reality. #leadupchat
A1. A goal is a milestone, vs a resolution is a change in behavior due to a decision made. In my opinion, you need resolutions in order to meet your goals #leadupchat
Resolutions often seem more technical. Things that one just needs self discipline to do. Goals are more adaptive, take many steps and challenges to meet along the way. #leadupchat
Stop making assumptions about what’s going on in the classroom down the hall. The only assumption that should be made in schools, is that every child needs some kind of support. Otherwise, knock it off. #edchat#tlap#leadupchat
A1: Part 2--I think we need to think about three words actually--Resolution is what we resolve to do or be. Goals are the bite-sized chunks that make the resolution actionable. Action steps are what we commit to doing to meet our goals. #leadupchat
Interesting -- seems like there is a variety of definition. No matter what the term, seems like we are sorting out the best path to lasting change and improvement. #leadupchat
I don't want a resolution or a goal ... I want a guide, which is why I like the #OneWord2018 concept so much. I can go back and hit my guiding word to put me back on track. #leadupchat
A1 Resolutions denote intent formally. I think if held to the truest form of the definition because they mark a change in mindset where a goals are great but have an endpoint. #leadupchat
These are key points, Liz. As practicing leaders, we are called to engage in purposeful, specific reflection to inform our next steps. Also, I like the connection of goals to needs - creates a sense of urgency #leadupchat
I like this because it breaks it down even further...have the big picture, lay out the framework, and then determine the steps needed to achieve!
#leadupchat
A1: Resolutions may or may not be achieved but goals more often than not are when the process of reaching a goal is developed. #leadupchat#itsallabouttheprocess
A1: I wonder if my definitions are different from others' because I've never been down with the "New Year's resolutions" mentality of "say it in January, forget it in February." #leadupchat
Good morning #leadupchat I'm a 2nd yr T from N. Tx joining today and excited to learn and grow. I teach 4th grade science and writing and I blog/build websites for educators at https://t.co/3BKc90zCnw ~ Love my tribe! and love my campus/district. #awesomeyear
A1b-I think also people get so caught up in the resolution part that they fail at it one day and they think it is done, goals are something we work towards and so failure some days is expected and we learn from it. #leadupchat
A1: The difference to me is that a resolution is a “what if” without any specific action to make the change. A goal implies that you have a plan to put energy into making your “what if” a reality. #leadupchat
A1: A resolution seems to be a change or improvement. Something we think needs fixing or should be better. Goals have action plans and move us forward. #LeadUpChat
Resolutions often live as open ended statements...I am going to exercise more, where as goals connect to desired outcomes. I am going to lose 10 pounds through regular exercise and healthy eating. #leadupchat
If you decide to do something but don’t take any action steps or do any strategic planning to get there then it’s nothing more than a decision. Deciding something doesn’t make it so. Think about dieting. I’ve declared many things in that arena! 😉 #leadupchat
Yep! And I intentionally used the words "do or be" because I think we can resolve to be something and then chart a course for achieving that. #leadupchat
A1b-I think also people get so caught up in the resolution part that they fail at it one day and they think it is done, goals are something we work towards and so failure some days is expected and we learn from it. #leadupchat
A2: The biggest way for me to prioritize is to be extremely mindful of my environment, and for myself internally...prayer. One of my goals attached to my #oneword2018 is to embed prayer into daily moments. #leadupchat
A1- Depends on the level of commitment. A goal typically requires an action plan. A resolution requires resolve, but I typically avoid resolutions in the new year because they are often given unnecessary added weight and often aren’t followed through. #leadupchat
A1: I see a resolution, as played out across the world at this time of year, as a reoccurring hope or fad. A goal is a well thought out process (SMART) that is created based on an identified need to evaluate a system or practice for effectiveness. #leadupchat
A2: a priority is if the goal is back to your “why”. If you set a goal that matches your values, you’re more likely to follow through on that goal in the long run #leadupchat
A2: My goals may stay the same but the priority for each is a sliding scale. Some days it is the easy to accomplish goals that get first priority and others it is the bigger mountains I start to climb. #leadupchat#mindset#somedaysyouneedthewin
A2: Prioritizing goals must happen with the end goal in sight. Which end goal is the most important? That will determine the timeline for meeting a goal. #leadupchat
Jason! Thanks for being here! Chat was humming too fast earlier and I neglected to say "good morning!" Powerhouse ELA teacher from @BuhlerUSD313, folks. Great guy to connect with! #leadupchat
A2: What Goals will make the biggest positive impact on students? teachers? Are there small quick changes involved in this goal that can make a fast impact? #leadupchat
A2 To prioritize goals, backwards plan- break big goal up into smaller parts that will build confidence as they are realized- backwards planning gives you clarity for which steps to take first, second, etc. #leadupchat
A2: For goals to be real priorities, we need accountability partners. Instead of telling someone my goal, I ask them to check in with me about it. #leadupchat#goals#priorities
A2 When we determine our goals, it's important to differentiate important and urgent. The goals that have a greater urgency are placed at the top of the list - followed by those that we have more time to accomplish #leadupchat
A2: the goals that have the most potential to meet students’ needs in the best way are the top priorities. It’s important to focus on a small number of goals in order to concentrate effort #leadupchat
A2: What is the desired state? What do I need to do to get from where I am to where we need to be? Actionable steps within a timeline including built in reflection help establish the path. #leadupchat
A2. Prioritizing goals is a skill that must be developed. Our natural inclination is to try to fix everything, which usually results in nothing being fixed. #leadupchat
A2: For me personally, prioritization is not a one-time event but something that needs constant reflection. I have moved to writing down goals and journaling about them. Helps me continue to ask what should be the true priorities. #leadupchat
A2 I frequently prioritize by urgency. When urgency isn't an issue, then I prioritize by passion! Isn't it always easier to work on our passion goals than ones we aren't so passionate about? #LeadUpChat
A2: A guiding question: "How much value will this goal add to those I lead?" It's all about collective efficacy. The goal that impacts the most folks other than YOU is the priority. #leadupchat
A2 We all know we can't do too many things at one time, not with focus anyway. We need to focus on 1 or 2 things that will bring the most return and warrant the effort. #leadupchat
A2: In teaching, I feel like the goals are prioritized by the building leadership team. That being said, sometimes there is not staff buy-in. I feel like there needs to be definitive direction and necessity given that not working toward that goal is NOT optional. #leadupchat
A2: I prioritize goals based on which will impact STUDENTS the most. Student centered goals are always WAY above those that are adult centered. #leadupchat
A2- in the words os Spock, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Find what will help the most students and make that the priority! #leadupchat
A:2 Staff and students need long and short term goals. Short term goals should lead to some immediate success that drives everyone and keeps them focused on the big picture. Be it as simple as attendance, every small step leads to success. #leadupchat
A2: For goals to be real priorities, we need accountability partners. Instead of telling someone my goal, I ask them to check in with me about it. #leadupchat#goals#priorities
A2: I'm the strange type that enjoys being uber busy and juggling/attacking multiple goals at once, both personal and professional. I usually default to addressing the most easily addressable goal first. #leadupchat
A:2 prioritizing comes w/reflecting & really looking at what's happening around me with the things that I value most: Family, Health, Students #Leadupchat
A2: I think it’s helpful to have one big goal. That is my priority. Smaller, easier to achieve goals keep me flexible but still move towards that big goal. #leadupchat
A2: Leverage and focus, which goal has greatest leverage to make the greatest positive impact, along with ensuring very few goals are called out to allow for focus. #leadupchat
A2. To prioritize I think about long term impact and significance. Which problem can I solve that might have a ripple effect on other areas? How do I exploit strengths and mitigate weaknesses? #leadupchat
A2: I prioritize goals based on which will impact STUDENTS the most. Student centered goals are always WAY above those that are adult centered. #leadupchat
A2: to prioritize goals you have to prioritize life. Decide which ones are needs vs. wants. Decide which ones have time limits and which ones are open to doing later. #leadupchat
Unfortunately in my personalize I put everyone else first- im@trying not to do that this year bc I realize if@i@take better care of myself I am a better mom/wife. At school st and T learning is the #1 priority EVERYDAY! Everything centers around failing forward! #leadupchat
A2. We Begin with the four goals of our School Improvement Plan. Also keep in mind your Mision and Vision Statements and Core Ethical Values . #leadupchat
Not being a workaholic is a good goal for educators.
Wanting to serve kids is a worthy goal but there is a point where too much is unhealthy. #leadupchat
A2: My failure in the past is that I have established goals based professional terms only. I am horrible about taking care of myself...I need personal goals. I have a goal of prioritizing personal goals! (We can have a goal to set a goal, right?!) :) #leadupchat
A2: VISION of the future not just the daily grind is a guide to priority. The big picture of how we want our culture to exist gives the path to priority. #LeadUpChat
A2: When prioritizing goals: consider which are most important and which are urgent. Those move to the front of the checklist.
From there, we tend to focus on what we enjoy, what benefits others, and what will build larger ends by connecting multiple initiatives.
#leadupchat
A2 I typically prioritize goals by immediacy of need, by time to completion, and by input from influences in environment. I gain energy off pushing towards completion of tasks that meet annual goals personally and professionally. #leadupchat
A2: Prioritize goals based on impact & need. Also, is one required to move forward with another? Think through the process from beginning to end. #LeadUpChat
A2 We should seek to prioritize goals by potential for impact with alignment to what we value. Should always be asking tough questions about our ‘why’! #leadupchat
In our world our goals involve people, who change constantly, prioritization must do the same! Goes back to Kyle's comments earlier. It's an adaptive challenge. @kylemcclure@TheKLC#leadupchat
A2: For me personally, prioritization is not a one-time event but something that needs constant reflection. I have moved to writing down goals and journaling about them. Helps me continue to ask what should be the true priorities. #leadupchat
A2-this is especially hard for school leaders since sometimes goals of everyone counting on you can be in competition. #MindfulLeader practice & coaching help me keep goals aligned to my beliefs about education purpose #leadupchat
It's how much time you spend on it: planning, collaborating, implementing, reflecting. My #OneWord2018 is Vision. I'll feel successful if I keep our bldg goals in our collective vision, conversation & work all year. #leadupchat
Agree, Brent. As we accomplish our goals, our prospective broadens. It's important to constantly engage in the introspection necessary to prioritize our next steps. Increases our capacity to reach the summit of those mountains #leadupchat
A2. To prioritize I think about long term impact and significance. Which problem can I solve that might have a ripple effect on other areas? How do I exploit strengths and mitigate weaknesses? #leadupchat
Truth. We must look at our resources, human and materiel, to decide what goals are worth our investment. As we reach goals they make they make more resources available. #leadupchat
A2: To prioritize school goals, start with “Will this make kids’ lives better?”; then “Will this make my Ts’ lives better so they can make kids’ lives better?” Work on accomplishing those goals first and then get rid of all the others. #leadupchat
A2: My failure in the past is that I have established goals based professional terms only. I am horrible about taking care of myself...I need personal goals. I have a goal of prioritizing personal goals! (We can have a goal to set a goal, right?!) :) #leadupchat
A2: Leverage and focus, which goal has greatest leverage to make the greatest positive impact, along with ensuring very few goals are called out to allow for focus. #leadupchat
A2: This can be one of the most challenging tasks of leaders. Instructional goals should be prioritized by scaffolding the steps to success. Others receive priority based upon how they will support accomplishing the instructional goals. Students come first! #leadupchat
A2: Such a GREAT question! "Without a vision, the people perish." And without prioritization, we do nothing well. I like the impact/feasibility matrix as a tool for narrowing my focus. #leadupchat
A2: My failure in the past is that I have established goals based professional terms only. I am horrible about taking care of myself...I need personal goals. I have a goal of prioritizing personal goals! (We can have a goal to set a goal, right?!) :) #leadupchat
A2: My failure in the past is that I have established goals based professional terms only. I am horrible about taking care of myself...I need personal goals. I have a goal of prioritizing personal goals! (We can have a goal to set a goal, right?!) :) #leadupchat
A1 I think the biggest difference is the amount of determination grit and somewhat reality of the thing you want to accomplish. Resolution being what I think requires the most of those #leadupchat
A2: My failure in the past is that I have established goals based professional terms only. I am horrible about taking care of myself...I need personal goals. I have a goal of prioritizing personal goals! (We can have a goal to set a goal, right?!) :) #leadupchat
A2: I prioritize goals based on which will impact STUDENTS the most. Student centered goals are always WAY above those that are adult centered. #leadupchat
I'm going to find a new accountability partner this year. Last year I kept talking to myself and I'm so demanding! I want to find someone who is nicer. #leadupchat
Absolutely! Change simply for the sake of change leads to frustration and burn out. Change needs to be intentional and purposeful, leading to improvement. #leadupchat
"Wouldn't it be great if every kid could _____?" Yes, yes it would. What are you going to do to get them there? You have to turn your windows in to mirrors sometimes. What do I need to do to help people reach their optimum effectiveness? Problem posed, problem solved. #leadupchat
Q2) It's a balance of identifying short/long term impacts on S outcomes. Goals are based on academic, social, behavioral, and etc needs of Ss. #Leadupchat
A2. One of the biggest errors I see in new leaders is trying to do it all. You can’t do everything. No school improvement plan with 25 goals is with the paper it’s written on because it’s not practical. Focus, Priorotize, Simplify! Quality 1st. #leadupchat
This is a key piece to highlight, Shelly. Grind without purpose leads to unjustified fatigue. As leaders, we are have to have a big-picture perspective, connect the dots, and focus our energy. #leadupchat
A2: VISION of the future not just the daily grind is a guide to priority. The big picture of how we want our culture to exist gives the path to priority. #LeadUpChat
That is why a reflective process is so important. Have a plan for reflection can help make sure it happens, even if it is not something natural. #leadupchat
A2: I prioritize based on deadlines. What needs to be handled immediately vs. what can i do later on. Some things have to happen before you have a next step. #leadupchat
A2: to prioritize goals I look at what is most important for success and impact. Then, break it down into smaller chunks so that goals are obtainable! I’m a checklist person, so marking off an accomplishment helps me see the success and light at the end of the tunnel. #leadupchat
late start here... A1 I see a resolution as short term, beginning of the yr "stuff." A goal is more long term, maybe more thoughtful. Also, we tend, in education, to want to measure goals. #leadupchat
A2: What is the one thing I most want to see happen? Why? What can I do to make it happen? Answer these and the priorities for goals come naturally. #leadupchat
A2: My failure in the past is that I have established goals based professional terms only. I am horrible about taking care of myself...I need personal goals. I have a goal of prioritizing personal goals! (We can have a goal to set a goal, right?!) :) #leadupchat
Part of our job is to support adults to meet those Student needs. Are there times when an adult win results in students win? Helping staff to see the “Why” of student learning for example? #leadupchat
"Wouldn't it be great if every kid could _____?" Yes, yes it would. What are you going to do to get them there? You have to turn your windows in to mirrors sometimes. What do I need to do to help people reach their optimum effectiveness? Problem posed, problem solved. #leadupchat
We are always tempted to jump on the latest bandwagon in edu. We jump into things without having the slightest indication if they work. Let’s focus! #leadupchat
A3: Courage. I think the "I can't do it" mentality and the fear of failure keeps our goals from being too grand. I want grand goals I want to have to work to accomplish something. I am writing a book this year. It will be hard but it is happening #leadupchat#bebrave
A3: With a little more FEEDBACK from stakeholders...What starts a good goal developed by an individual or small group becomes an awesome goal when all stakeholders have a voice in shaping it #leadupchat
A3: For me personally, the word might be patience -- having the patience to see through goals. It is easy to want to see change come about more quickly than it will naturally. #leadupchat
Prioritizing goals depends on the phase of existence in education; where are you in a specific process and what level of impact does it have on student learning, achievement and well-being? #leadupchat
A3: REFLECTION - spend time really ruminating on all the facets, stakeholders, and the possible impacts. A secondary word would be RESEARCH - exploring new facets..#leadupchat
"With a little more WHY..." If students, staff, parents &/or community understand and can get behind the/our WHY (purpose), then amazing things can happen. #leadupchat
A2. Here’s what happens when we fail to prioritize: 1. We get paralyzed and overwhelmed, 2. We burn out from trying to do to much, 3. We weaken the quality of everything we are doing b/c we’re spread too thin. Priortization matters! #leadupchat
Yes, I scheduled two major events on my sons birthdays this past year. So focused on work that I forgot I'm a mom. Can't and won't do that again. Learning to say no and be OK with it. #leadupchat
A3 With a little #Grace an ordinary Goal can become Extraordinary. Things to not always go as planned. The path to the goal is not perfect. Reflect othen and allow for #Grace when the plan is not perfect. #leadupchat
Your point is valid- I'm not a very patient person but I have learned this year to be more patient and that sometimes you need to go slow to go fast in order to achieve a greater goal. #leadupchat
Often times, support is presented in a macro fashion, through the use of universal PD. While well intended, the best support is often micro, such as individualized PD that can directly support an individual teacher to help support students. #leadupchat
I'm so with you here! Trusting yourself more, trusting your team more. Self-efficacy is confidence in YOURSELF! Collective efficacy is confidence in your TEAM! Achieving goals requires BOTH! #leadupchat
A3: With a little move love...if we understand that every action we take as school leaders should be done out of love for people, we could do extraordinary things! #leadupchat
I love using this with teams! Sadly, in education we often spread ourselves far too thin and end up not doing anything very well. This helps us prune the peach tree! Narrow our focus and energy to those things that will have high impact. #leadupchat
In reply to
@PrincipalPaul, @Hondofan, @johnschulte84, @KennedymMelissa
A3: RISK - actually with ALOT... Risk is connected to all the worlds greatness. No one & nothing ever changed without RISK that shook us/it & challenged us to the core. #LeadUpChat
@bethhill2829 I think this happens when we confuse self-care with selfish. We are given a body with which to serve. If we don't take care of it... #leadupchat
A2: I prioritize by how much benefit others will get. When you pour into others they pour back into you and often times they help you achieve your other goals. #LeadUpChat
A3: With a little less "but we've always done it this way" (schedules, grades, grouping students, etc., etc.) and ordinary goal becomes EXCITING and extraordinary :) #leadupchat
A3: Collaboration. An ordinary goal becomes extraordinary when all stakeholders share the vision and have a say in how it will come about. I have seen the power of extraordinary goals impact an entire school culture when everyone is all in. #leadupchat
A3 Servitude. Extraordinary and amazing things come from setting goals that never point back to the person setting the goals but to the others they impact. That spirit I feel is what we all strive to do on a daily basis. #leadupchat
A3. Strategy and structure-So often when we decide (resolve) to do something we don’t account for the strategies and structure needed for it to be carried out successfully. Example-PLCs with no common planning time. 🧐 #leadupchat
A3: AWARENESS- If I am aware of the people, relationships, strengths, fears, obstacles, possibilities...then I can navigate and build extraordinary results for students, staff, & community. #leadupchat
A3: Intensity. I can make easy goals all day and check them off. What has that transformed? Who has that bettered? Your goals aren't just a checklist. Focused, meaningful goals have something at stake. If we don't do this, ____ will suffer. #leadupchat
A2: ideally, prioritize goals based on the impact they will have. Sometimes financial or logistical restrictions can get in the way though. #leadupchat
I'm so with you here! Trusting yourself more, trusting your team more. Self-efficacy is confidence in YOURSELF! Collective efficacy is confidence in your TEAM! Achieving goals requires BOTH! #leadupchat
@bethhill2829 I think this happens when we confuse self-care with selfish. We are given a body with which to serve. If we don't take care of it... #leadupchat
#leadupchat sometimes there are compliance tasks and tasks that truly allow us to grow. When we are able to prioritize tasks to focus on improving teaching and learning, we are in better shape. Anything that involves teachers learning and sharing information is key for growth.
Great Question A2: We prioritize our goals, based on our values & mission. Consider both organizational & personal goals too-- Beginning with the Q: Is this best for our S? Are the goals supporting high expectations for EACH S? Then, How will this help our T succeed? #leadupchat
A3: With a little less "but we've always done it this way" (schedules, grades, grouping students, etc., etc.) and ordinary goal becomes EXCITING and extraordinary :) #leadupchat
Good morning #leadupchat - jumping in late on Q3!
A3 I think Clarity is the word I would choose. Sometimes we think it is understood but if it’s too fuzzy results will be too.
A2. Here’s what happens when we fail to prioritize: 1. We get paralyzed and overwhelmed, 2. We burn out from trying to do to much, 3. We weaken the quality of everything we are doing b/c we’re spread too thin. Priortization matters! #leadupchat
Have to get to the gym but shamelss plug for my session at ISTE18, its about professional development for UDL. It involves my dovtirate work and GoogleEI project. Please vote for us here: Thank you!
https://t.co/5YmBhKEuy6#leadupchat
A2: I always reflect and prioritize by what is important verses what is urgent. Usually what is urgent must be done quickly what is important requires well thought out steps #leadupchat
#leadupchat sometimes there are compliance tasks and tasks that truly allow us to grow. When we are able to prioritize tasks to focus on improving teaching and learning, we are in better shape. Anything that involves teachers learning and sharing information is key for growth.
A3: Connection to the “Why”. If we see school as preparing students for amazing lives instead of simply the next year then our goals will fly! #leadupchat
Love this word, David. If we are to truly facilitate quality learning environments for the students we serve, we must be audacious in our innovation to support their success #leadupchat
Yes and accept the fact that trailblazers start fires. We've got water. The only other option is to sit around the campfire humming to ourselves #leadupchat
Amen! If we are pursuing goals w/ a potential to only minimally impact student & stakeholder success we have strayed from our mission & values. Results in unfulfilled purpose and stifled potential! #leadupchat
A2 We should seek to prioritize goals by potential for impact with alignment to what we value. Should always be asking tough questions about our ‘why’! #leadupchat
The EXTRA makes all the difference!! Have to be willing to go the EXTRA mile, give the EXTRA time, love, dedication, and drive!! #leadupchat#CESLEAD#OCSBELONG
A3: Great question! With a little more BELIEF. Belief that it matters. Belief that it will be a process. Belief in those supporting the process. Belief that there will be challenges. Belief that if we just don’t give up anything can be accomplished!!!! #leadupchat
A3: With a little patience an ordinary goal can become extraordinary!
We are too often trying to rush goal completion..be patient so they are not only met, but exceeded! #leadupchat
That’s, in part, why I selected relationships as my One Wird 2018. .....Relationships with my school family, God, and those who love me the most- my own family.
"Extraordinary and amazing things come from setting goals that never point back to the person setting the goals but to the others they impact." Love it. #leadupchat
A3 Servitude. Extraordinary and amazing things come from setting goals that never point back to the person setting the goals but to the others they impact. That spirit I feel is what we all strive to do on a daily basis. #leadupchat
A3) COURAGE. Sometimes I balk when the going gets tough. It's an extraordinary goal if at some point it feels impossible! Gotta remember that! #leadupchat
A3) COURAGE. Sometimes I balk when the going gets tough. It's an extraordinary goal if at some point it feels impossible! Gotta remember that! #leadupchat
A3. So often I see Leaders who think declaring-setting aspirational goals and high expectations-is what makes something change or happen. That’s not enough. Expectations alone won’t do it. Need a little elbow grease. Do the work with your folks! 😉 #leadupchat
Yes! My fail was being in a new school community, making assumptions, and moving too fast without enough communication. I guess that's more than one fail! LOL Mentors helped me to back up and rebuild which is so much harder! #leadupchat#lessonlearned
Student centered is so important. I worry that compliance tasks related to mandates and reforms sometimes get in the way and muddy the waters. #leadupchat
I agree, but I also believe we need to be flexible enough to shift if necessary. Our first prioritization might not be the right one, or may have been right at the time but has changed. #leadupchat
This reminds me of a podcast I listened to recently. Rather than creating a mission/vision statement, he posed developing a mission question that completes the stem: What if we could...? https://t.co/KTg74MUMkp#leadupchat
Right, Todd. The positive impact of our goals should be directly connected to helping our students' achieve their academic, social, emotional, and positive leadership learning goals #leadupchat
Melissa, that's a GREAT tweak on this Q! With a little less ________, an ordinary goal can be extraordinary! We need to talk about both in #Pacesetters some time!!! #leadupchat
A3: With a little less "but we've always done it this way" (schedules, grades, grouping students, etc., etc.) and ordinary goal becomes EXCITING and extraordinary :) #leadupchat
A3- Teamwork. I’m learning how important this is. I’ve always been someone that just takes it and does it. I’m learning that you can make others(and yourself) better by working together. #leadupchat
Yes and accept the fact that trailblazers start fires. We've got water. The only other option is to sit around the campfire humming to ourselves #leadupchat
A4: Starting a book. Literacy and Working out is the theme and the parallels that I ponder while working out in the mornings haha. I have a plan and that is the first step. #leadupchat
Yes! I think my point was, it is easy to say "students first" but the reality is teachers need our support to achieve goals for students. Our job should be chief fear remover and need taker care of ‘er, this way Ts can focus on Ss. #leadupchat
A3: With a little less "but we've always done it this way" (schedules, grades, grouping students, etc., etc.) and ordinary goal becomes EXCITING and extraordinary :) #leadupchat
It is in our best interest that we commit ourselves to appropriate wages for our #teachers, both for the worthy work that they do and for the values we communicate to them and, thereby, to the kids and families they serve.- https://t.co/4ApH782l36#satchat#leadupchat#elemchat
A4: Thinking outside the box for some issues that we currently have. Breaking away from the norm and taking chances. Sharing the message to be fearless! #leadupchat
A4: to balance my personal and work life. Sounds ordinary, but for me, a life-long struggle—this is the year to meet this extraordinary goal👍 #LeadUpChat
Have to get to the gym but shameless plug for my ISTE18 crowd source presentation. Its about PD for making learning accessible to all via UDL and involves my doctorate work & GoogleEI project. Please vote for us here:
https://t.co/5YmBhKEuy6#leadupchat#ThankYou
A3. A little more planning for implementation—don’t abandon a new strategy or practice because it’s not working IF you haven’t provided the ongoing PD, implementation support, and resources needed to make it a success. It’s not the strategy-🤓🤳🏾 #leadupchat
A1: On the surface, I view a resolution as something more definite and serious than a goal. However, I think people view resolutions (in the context of a new year) as a lofty aspiration that you are almost expected to not achieve or to give up on. #leadupchat
LeffingwellDan: RT KeriSnowden: But not just for the sake of change. It should be change for the sake of improvement. #leadupchathttps://t.co/Bg9IZbb1dI
A4: Be courageous in addressing anything that is not good for children. If I lack bravery to address that which erodes a culture of learning, I permit failure for kids, colleagues, and our community. #leadupchat
A4: finish my MS in Edu Leadership...the idea that I can go from inspiring and supporting my students to doing the same for teachers fills my ❤️ #exponentialgrowth#leadupchat
A4: I am determined to balance more in my world. There is SO much I want to accomplish professionally, and I tend to place personal goals on the back burner (or not make them at all). I need balance to be the best version of myself. I will incessantly pursue it. #leadupchat
A4: My “extraordinary” goal for 2018 is simple yet challenging...GRATITUDE...be grateful for what and who I take for granted on a regular basis. #leadupchat
For some reason, some feel that adjusting goals leads to a negative impression of them -- like they did not do it right the first time. We should probably be moving past that. #leadupchat
A4 taking multiple district wide projects across the finish line with purpose & intent so that #EveryChild gets the opportunities being provided #leadupchat this spring semester is jam packed of amazing programs kicking off
A1 I made a resolution last year to #walk1000miles - the mini goals were to walk 2.74 miles each day and around 84 miles each month. Needed to track progress to see achievements #leadupchat
A3: Divergent Thinking. This is the fun part! All ideas on the table. Then collaborate to shape the goal based on all that has been discussed. Divergent before Convergent. #leadupchat
Love this quote, Todd! #leadupchat I have my big goals but not quite ready to reveal them publicly...still trying to be brave...are these goals too big? Heck no, I'm going for it!
A4: I've been focusing on restorative practices in my classroom this year, so my goal for the second semester is to have zero office referrals! That will require more patience and pausing to work through our challenges, but I know we can do it! #leadupchat
A4: Such a great question...I feel like I have too many and have been trying to figure out how to narrow it down. Transformative is my #OneWord2018 so it MUST be part of that #LeadUpChat
A4: Fulfilling my dream of starting a nonprofit that advocates and provides funding for adopting orphans and foster kids everywhere. Almost ready to launch and we’ll be on Twitter @OLOM_Orphan Follow our journey if you like. #leadupchat
Keep going, there is light at the end of the tunnel we are all #Lifelonglearners & need our emotional tanks filled so we can be the best we can #leadupchat
A4: In my first year in a new role in a new district, my goal is to keep learning. Then, use what I learn and what I know to help my teachers and students move forward. One way will be figuring out how to teach and measure attributes like creativity and collaboration #leadupchat
A4: #myoneword is an extraordinary goal this year. Grace is not something I offer myself enough of. I try too hard, work too much, worry too often & try to solve too much of it all. My brave goal: find enough grace to be better for this passion than I’ve ever been #LeadUpChat
Let me know if you’d like some ideas/handouts, we host tons of family fun fitness nights in @SBISD & it takes the whole school whole community to support the whole child #leadupchat
A4: My extraordinary goal is to be a better, more present dad to my two beautiful daughters. With that comes the responsibility to find balance between work life and home life. My girls are getting bigger, 12, and soon to be 6. These are moments I will never get back. #leadupchat
A2: I prioritize goals by their need or eminence. The most pressing issue or the most impactful change (and the smaller goals contained within) rise to the top of my focus. I want goals to be more than just a nice idea; I want them to be real, beneficial, & possible #leadupchat
A4) My extraordinary goal in 2018 is to help teammates become more confident in the team's competence, AKA, collective efficacy. Through collaboration and shared learning experiences like micro-credentialing, we're going to do just that! #leadupchat
A4: To continue to find focus and perseverance to lead my elementary school to serving students and families at higher levels. (Jumping in late this morning.) #leadupchat
A4: for me, I’m striving to be 100% accountable to myself so that I can 100% to those I serve. Lots of steps to make this happen and it isn’t glamorous but it’s what I’m working on #leadupchat
Coming up in 30 minutes....#LeadLAP. Join me as we talk about culturizing our schools through the eyes of the students, staff, parents, & community. #Culturize
I'm planning to launch two new #education book series--one to help Teachers be more inspired than ever; the other to give #leaders practical strategies they don't know about, so they can be the best leader for all stakeholders.
#leadupchat
A4: I always get a nice push when I join #leadupchat conversations. My #OneWord for 2018 is JOY but I can't say that I have set an extraordinary goal. I'm going to have to simmer on this one.
I'm planning to launch two new #education book series--one to help Teachers be more inspired than ever; the other to give #leaders practical strategies they don't know about, so they can be the best leader for all stakeholders.
#leadupchat
Oooohhhhh....I really, really dig this!!! Totally stealing it. Latoya, will you be my accountability partner to help ensure I am moving FORWARD? #leadupchat
Great point! Very important to find and keep balance in all things. Personally, I am recommitting to the weight-loss journey. Lost 30 pounds over a 2-year period, but gained most of it back over time, #leadupchat
A4: goal for 2018 - be more forward thinking and more innovative. I have been getting a little too comfortable with the courses I have been teaching for multiple years. It’s time to make more of a drastic change to the way I do things. #leadupchat@MrPStrunk@ERobbPrincipal
A4. I’m going to self publish my first book-at least that’s the plan for now-almost finished with it. I think you guys are going to love it! I hope so anyway! #leadupchat
A4: Sometimes 'extraordinary' is moving people into a mindset for success when there hasn't been one. Providing the support that was overlooked by others. #leadupchat
A4: Be accessible to students and staff by spending less time in my office during contact hours, resulting in deeper positive relationships & allowing me to provide & receive more feedback concerning the climate & culture of our school & provide better supports. #LeadUpChat
A5: I realized I needed to be more intentional...decided to use @MichaelHyatt#FullFocusPlanner as a way to not only write my goals but establish the plan to make them happen!
#leadupchat
A5: Collaborative voice between all stakeholders. I will be bringing others along to give expert opinions and ideas. The more at the table, the better the outcome. #leadupchat
A5: Determine what truly motivates me, set high expectations, and most importantly knowing how to deal with both the successes and failures of my goals. #leadupchat#CESLEAD#OCSBELONG
A5: I need accountability from various people, so transparency is what does that for me. My assistant, @CaptainACPicard, got bossy on me yesterday about finishing something at school so it could be a no work weekend. THAT is what I need! #leadupchat
A5 To stay focused I plan to start my day with some meditation, journaling on a weekly basis, remembering to share positives with my staff, students and family every week. #leadupchat
A4. I’m going to self publish my first book-at least that’s the plan for now-almost finished with it. I think you guys are going to love it! I hope so anyway! #leadupchat
A4: My extraordinary goal for 2018 is to find more ways to empower my team to think above and beyond....shed the traditional paradigms that hinder us from doing what's really best for our students, (i.e. carving our way out of the box). #leadupchat
A5: 1) Be more present at team meetings 2) Create a structure to help with that 3) Ask specific questions that assess trust, confidence in others 4) Create shared learning experiences to help bond teammates as professional learners #leadupchat
A4- To lead with purpose that empowers, motivates, and inspires students and faculty to take risks and grow. Knowing it’s not about me, but about us. #leadupchat
A5: Employ regular reflective practices and bring someone along side of me to help me accountable to the goals and to add another voice and perspective. #leadupchat
Made a commitment to myself to work on my goal every day as part of my morning routine- read, reflect, write Little steps add up over time! #leadupchat
A5: Leverage my calendar to be most efficient with my time. Set time limits on departure from the office, create quiet time in the late evening to complete unfinished tasks from the day. This will get me home to my kids w/ energy & focus to be present in their lives. #leadupchat
A5: I have to be transparent with those on my team!!! Label my actions to be oriented with my goals!!! Ask for help!!!! Take feedback!!! Celebrate myself when I can!!! #leadupchat
A4. I’m going to self publish my first book-at least that’s the plan for now-almost finished with it. I think you guys are going to love it! I hope so anyway! #leadupchat
A5: I want to include my students in my book, discuss things with them include their perspective. Student Voice and Choice in literacy, warts and all because sometimes they hate strategies we want them to love, we should hear that too #leadupchat
A5: I've been up early each weekday journaling, reading, and writing. Sprinkle in a little exercise and meditation, and my schoolday student focus has been much improved #leadupchat
A5. Balance is very necessary or me. For the last year I have been focused on work life balance. The more balanced of a life I lead the better I am in all areas of my life. #leadupchat
I'm planning to launch two new #education book series--one to help Teachers be more inspired than ever; the other to give #leaders practical strategies they don't know about, so they can be the best leader for all stakeholders.
#leadupchat
We can and we must take care of ourselves if we want to have the impact we want to make. Its easy to say and tougher to practice! Lots of room for growth for me. #leadupchat
A5: We have soo much work to be done for Ss. I am inspired by Robert Frost’s lines, "And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”
We can’t rest on success when Ss and Ts need our support to maximize their lives. #leadupchat
A5: Support others in trying new things, lots of conversation with students and teachers about interests, listen more, smile more, recognize and name the talent in others, celebrate our good work, hug it out during the struggle #leadupchat
A5: Use my courage to be vulnerable to make recommendations and plans for improvement. Stay open to feedback from others to make my plans even better. #leadupchat
A4 The bold goal is often what seems to be the simple goal, for me there are two: 1) building relationships that help others find answers and succeed, 2) continuing to be a lifelong learner, there is so much I have to learn (life is humbling!) #leadupchat
Yesterday's moment was seeing one of my students while waiting for my daughter in the car. I jumped out and ran over to give him a big hug. Can't wait to see my students on Monday. Lots of smiles, hugs and high-fives. #leadupchat
A5: The most powerful initiatives take on a life of their own - they don’t live with ONE person, but instead, they GROW. As more people BELIEVE in the base, the result morphs into something AMAZING that often would have been inconceivable initially. #leadupchat#powerofbelief
A5 I will always move to action with more urgency based on what we all do! The faster we get to goals, the faster we can improve what the collective builds for Ss! #leadupchat
A5: I want to always maintain a growth mindset that keeps to the maintains a philosophy that we are always moving forward even if it’s just a small bit.
A5 In order to influence the culture in my school for the better, I am working on #relationships . @gcouros says "If we want meaningful change, we have to make a connection to the heart before we can make a connection to the mind." #leadupchat
A5: Allocating small chunks of time to focus & reflect on where I want to go/be each week. I want to continue learning in my new role this school yr & be connected at home, work & #PLN#Leadupchat
A5: I'm pretty sure my "no office referrals" goal is already pretty extraordinary! I've got to get students on board and trusting me to help them solve problems and not just get punished! #leadupchat
A5: Would I want this for my child? Are we equitable in what we do? Learning by invitation or operating under the false belief that some kids get it and others don't jeopardizes the future for the kid. We're not in the business of giving up on kids. #leadupchat
As I age, the unexamined life is the one that leads to more stress that a reflected-upon life. Reflection helps us also recognize our limits. #leadupchat
A5. I’m very focused on expanding and growing the #leadershipwithlatoya community. I believe with my whole heart that leaders need community so I’m going to use my platform to develop and support that. #leadupchat
A5 make intentional changes small enough that we can’t help but score victories towards those extraordinary goals: Supt. @ScottMuri provided me a book that is transforming some of my thought process & leadership skills #leadupchat
A5: Find more time for brainstorming, dreaming and collaborated in a less structured atmosphere.....sometimes just being removed from the traditional environment empowers creativity. #leadupchat
A5: I want to begin each week sending a positive email to another staff member. I hope I can work to increase building morale to benefit our teachers and students! #leadupchat
A5: It doesn't have to start out extraordinary to finish that way! **Reflection is huge. Ruminate on how it's going, where, how fast, who's in or heading out, what push or support is needed, how much...Then ACT on it. Keep it in focus. #leadupchat
This is of critical importance! Can’t expect things to happen overnight, or at the snap of a finger. True progress takes time and commitment. Set attainable goals, and celebrate growth as it happens. #leadupchat
A5 I need to work on my follow through esp with big/long-term goals. I get inpired, push, and then... Fizzle/overwhelm. Maybe that's a result of too many goals/lack of focus #LeadUpChat
A5 make intentional changes small enough that we can’t help but score victories towards those extraordinary goals: Supt. @ScottMuri provided me a book that is transforming some of my thought process & leadership skills #leadupchat
Communicate, connect, and measure the pulse of the building. Empower others as teacher leaders who are involved in shared and distributed leadership. And, let them do their work within the vision and framework of our school without hovering #leadupchat
A4: Part 2--Reading so many outstanding extraordinary goals triggered my extraordinary goal! Write a book! I spent the past year writing a simple book for my children & it was a JOY to give it to them 4 Christmas. I want to write something that brings JOY to others. #leadupchat
A1: Frequently it seems like resolutions are one-step commitments to start or stop a behavior. Goals are focused on an end that requires various smaller steps. #leadupchat
A5. I’m redoing the #leadershipwithlatoya website, adding features, continuing with our e-Magazine, and adding a video based feature for #leadershipwithlatoyalive. It’s going to be tons of work but it makes me happy so 🤓 #leadupchat
A5: Be purposefully planned and scheduled to create more time to be with my people! I will take the step of sharing my plan/schedule with my Team to create expectations and encourage accountability, as well as measure my progress and outcomes. #KeepItSimpleSuccessful#leadupchat
A5. I’m also going to schedule time to write into my life-it’s something I do lots of on weekends, but I need to write more and be more consistent in doing so. #leadupchat
A5 The extraordinary begins w simple acts (we often overanalyze process/actions). If I set a positive example of leadership, displaying empathy, serving, having high expectations 4 all, listening, mentoring, learning daily, then extraordinary results will occur. #leadupchat
A5 - what will education look like in 5 years? 15 years? Access to more technology will allow me to transform the way my class functions. Hoping this becomes a reality in 2018! #leadupchat@MrPStrunk@ERobbPrincipal

A4: My personal goal in 2018 is to focus on peace and joy. My professional goal for 2018 is to obtain an administrative position in my district. #leadupchat#2018goals
And yet, we must also pause. When Ss see & experience that cherishing of the moment, they embrace it and we grow as well. Miles to go, but easier #together. We can redefine that as well. This is from my book for Ts. #leadupchat
A5: Build relationships with families sharing with them the strengths of their children and what their family can contribute to our school. Then do the same for students and staff. Inspire to move higher! #leadupchat.
Writing is one of my personal al goals for this year. I don’t do nearly enough and have started a blog...twice! I never really followed through but this is the year! I hope! #leadupchat
A5 - what will education look like in 5 years? 15 years? Access to more technology will allow me to transform the way my class functions. Hoping this becomes a reality in 2018! #leadupchat@MrPStrunk@ERobbPrincipal
A5: Accountability partners for blogging #BlogLAP; Mindfulness--be present when working with educators so that I can see what is needed and work to meet the need; Intentionality--be intentional in my communication about how data is our friend. :) #leadupchat
A5: Learn to breathe. Remember that I may not always have control of what’s on my plate, but I always get to decide what to eat first. Grace is often about moving past things instead of trying to fix things all the time #leadupchat
A4: One of my goals for this year is to begin work on vertical alignment of our standards. Looking for tools and ideas to get started. Any recommendations? #leadupchat
A5: Do everything with GUSTO!!!! Surround myself with people that are smarter than me, to soak up EVERYTHING that I can to be better each day! #leadupchat
A5: Learn to breathe. Remember that I may not always have control of what’s on my plate, but I always get to decide what to eat first. Grace is often about moving past things instead of trying to fix things all the time #leadupchat
