A2 The strengths&weaknesses of different aspects of ongoing work. Their engagement, passion! Their hopes… https://t.co/MTNPwalWrS
-
-
Q2: What are students self-assessing?
-
Liz honestly it is awesome. Changed assessment and parent communication for the better.
-
very nice! Thx for sharing
-
Love it... digging into math thinking. Making the tacit explicit.
-
Great to see you here tonight, Sherida. I hope Cent is going well. I do miss it. But Westwood is so much fun!
-
A2 can feel easier to reflect on math/reading/writing, sometimes more challenging around "creativity" "critical thinking" et al
-
Hi all - Christine from Mission coming in late tonight
-
Hi all - Christine from Mission coming in late tonight
-
A1: I get students to show where they think their writing/project is on a rubric, and write a reflection about why they think so.
-
-
A2: students assess their own artworks before I evaluate.
-
A2 when self reflecting, I try to always have (and model) two "stars" and one "wish" - limit & focus on what to improve on
-
-
-
hello Christine. Didn't recognize the picture :)
-
I've used photos & Ss' work w stickies &/or pieces of paper stapled 2 it. Gr8 4 sharing w Ps
-
-
Like the addition of reflection after marking rubric. I've done the 1st, but not taken it farther! https://t.co/JEhIkbYE1U

-
-
Hi all, sorry a little bit late - planning away tonight! Victoria from Langley, happy to join
-
A great book by Teaching Students to Self Assess https://t.co/ecwfGlDLo8 Gives lots of practical & applicable ideas
-
Oh snap... Question 3 is coming...
-
A2 Solutions are provided and students try to self assess what they know and need to work on
-
I'm just starting w/FreshGrade myself..looking forward to getting to where you're at
-
Q3: How do you use self-assessment to support student learning?
-
Q3: How do you use self-assessment to support student learning?
-
you're very welcome! That's what is all about- sharing.
-
A2: Ss self assessing own focus, mindfulness, and on-task behaviours as we continue to develop self-reg skills in Daily5/math
-
Q2: St's self-assess our focus for the week/month. It changes. Sept/Oct is usually social responsibility (community building)
-
Love it! So they are self-assessing personalized goals?
-
Daily 5 is a great resource for SA: students assessing what a "good fit book" might be - using this as a springboard for other SA
-
-
cool! How did your students reach a consensus on the rubric?
-
A2: Self-assessment helps me learn about my students' work habits, effort, comprehension, and more!
-
Q1 A1 I have students create self-assessment rubrics for projects & inquiry, weekly learning journals, freshgrade
-
It's a good one. Hope you are enjoying.
-
A3: I use critiques and every student participates to share observations. It cements the learning much more as each hears others.
-
Self assessment can help students choose and advocate for more appropriate learning challenges.
-
Anyone use any right brain strategies in exploration around self assessment?
-
-
Hi All! Coming in late with dishpan hands from Yukon!
-
Totally! Having a pre-created rubric that st's use is never powerful like on the children own.
-
Encouraging students to reflect on their work/creations helps them become life long learners
-
A3: Student reflections help guide my instruction - but also giving feedback on self-assessment abilities at same time!
-
A1 We co-construct criteria for what does good writing look like and use it to peer/self assess year round
-
A3. When you include the student's knowledge and understandings with what is being learned makes it personally relevant.
-
Joining the Cynthia Chan, supporting K-1 classes in Literacy and Numeracy. Passion for early learning and inquiry
-
-
-
Asking students guiding questions helps them become more reflective
-
A3- helps to guide Ss' planning & next steps. 4 deeper/more complex concepts&learning we use it 2 help set goals.
-
Q3: St. self-assessment is an integral piece of my classroom management. With it, children own class expectations.
-
Q4: How do you support students to self-assess their learning?

-
We hope you’re enjoying the chat tonight! Remember, we chat every Sunday at 7 pm PST!
-
A3: Self-assessments help to clarify what our learning goals are and how we have grown - great motivators!
-
Is anyone else feeling the need to move away from rubrics?
-
A3: I use student self-assessment for goal -setting & chance to identify areas of strengths, interest for inquiry projects
-
Q3: 90% class expectations are co-created and self-assessed by st.'s --> student ownership/personalization = powerful
-
And even more importantly they own their learning https://t.co/65tprZO7IO
-
-
Q3: St. self-assessment is an integral piece of my classroom management. With it, children own class expectations.
-
For some tasks, we use time, focus & access to help. Did task take a short/long time? Focused or distracted? Did you need help?
-
This is specifically for self-reg tasks, though.
-
I'm sooooo around this... YES... get rid of the rubric-mindset. Agreed.
-
A4 I find guidance is needed to help redirect students away from areas they are already pretty good at. Rubrics can help this
-
A4: Give time to reflect, and model self-assessment: show students that I'm reflecting on my teaching.
-
A4 Give them a variety of ways to reflect! Some like 2 write, others draw/sketchnote, others record video. Let them choose the how
-
Can definitely put a ceiling on creativity when kids just aim for the minimum to 'pass' or 'exceed'
-
A4: make mistakes a win, encourage risk taking, ask what they liked and didn't like, encourage reworking to improve.
-
Q2 A1: Stdnts self assess personal learning goals actively reflect on learning journey on create & develop rubrics
-
❤️it. Did this w gr2/3 &had them start by ranking exemplars from anonymous writers then share their reasoning w the class
-
A4 the role of assessment as learning is essential Teachers guide their students based on what they are seeing them create
-
. I like the developmental framework that the core competencies are based on. Ss can self assess but no rubrics.
-
or use them mindfully. Exemplars can be beneficial but sometimes tricky to get good samples
-
A4: When looking at product, best work? Full effort? What am I proud about specifically in product? What would I improve?
-
But what makes sense next? I am using checklists with co-constructed criteria. Other ideas out there?
-
-
-
Absolutely. A solid rubric must have anchors and that does not happen often https://t.co/tpNwfb97zG
-
-
Is anyone else feeling the need to move away from rubrics?
-
Totally! Use photos/video to tell story. Child can speak their thinking in video/write for photo.
-
I saw that. Sure with I had thinner thumbs!😊 It would make the rapid tweeting required 4 SO much easier.
-
https://t.co/lYDN5Xvxcc
-
-
one thing I've been using with 3rd grade ss is called the KAT protocol, what would you keep, add, and takeaway,
-
A4: support Ss w self-assessment thru guiding Qs, opportunities to revisit past learning via or other portfolios
-
Yes, on weekly reflection journals
-
Lovely! what tech are you using to accomplish this? https://t.co/vhqwmCDdWD
-
-
Totally! Use photos/video to tell story. Child can speak their thinking in video/write for photo.
-
Q5: What have you done so far with ’s core competencies?
-
Q5: What have you done so far with ’s core competencies?
-
-
Q4: St. self-ass has to be taught. Once you start the children are accustomed to it. It helps guide personalized learning goals.
-
That's a nice, simple protocol for students to follow!
-
I don't disagree, but think they may be more useful for teachers than student use.
-
Q4: I model my own self-assessment. I am still learning & make mistakes. What wld I say about my own learning as a mathematician?
-
A5: The beauty of the core competencies is they are already part of what we do daily: think, communicate, as part of a community
-
a BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to what a champ helping me co-mod on her big day!!!
-
a BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to what a champ helping me co-mod on her big day!!!
-
A4 Model and help them build confidence to power through self-improvement
-
I think was moving to a circular ass't. looking forward to it!
-
Let's not forget students w/IEPs...where appropriate, s's attend own IEP mtgs, have input on their goals+meas+progress
-
Thx for the encouragement. I have high hopes for my Ss building upon their digital literacy
-
Assessment is such a relevant topic for
-
A5 Changed physical space of classroom, tables facillitate communication/colab, re-arrange seats daily.
-
A5: Exactly! https://t.co/OC15gzF5zC
-
-
A5: The beauty of the core competencies is they are already part of what we do daily: think, communicate, as part of a community
-
Nice! Would love to see what this looks like? Paper journal/digitial?
-
Kids love sharing and uploading photos. I tried it for Science 8! Works fab
-
Tonight’s topic was suggested by YOU, ! Please stop by our website to suggest topics for upcoming chats: https://t.co/apNWRbIjSj
-
A5- used the big ideas 2plan my year then the competencies to guide the more day-to-day. Liked that freedom of finding curric w/in
-
A5: This is a hard question to answer when we don't know how we're reporting on these competencies...
-
A5Change table groups each day, invite students to engage in daily convo, get-to-knows, support belonging & identity
-
Students & families must be involved in planning meetings. Collaboration is key for student success … https://t.co/9U78YFYqJ4
-
-
Let's not forget students w/IEPs...where appropriate, s's attend own IEP mtgs, have input on their goals+meas+progress
-
Q2 Their personal growth :)
-
I'll say this-Have hit pieces of all major areas. Specific outcomes, not focused on yet. Focused more on community development
-
In my district we've been told that it will involve a student reflection at the end of the year.
-
Also, forgot to mention, I teach high school Eng/SS
-
So far, on paper but would love to encourage digital literacy
-
Same with us, but we have no reporting templates for November yet. That's troubling.
-
-
-
And are seriously still having a discussion about letter grades... I can't.
-
🎉🎈🎀Happy Birthday Christine! 🎀🎈🎉
-
Q5: Many SEL lessons, not a box building inquiry week, teambuilding 4 thinking & Com. One sentence project for per&social compt.
-
A5 we are discussing as a staff ways to have students identify their understanding of & progression through the core competencies
-
A5 "stretch break" in 75 min class inc. name games & partner challenges to build community; also "right to pass" when called
-
A5. I include and mindful of the core competencies in everything I do in the classroom.
-
-
Yes they are. Would be curious how Student self-assess re Core Comp will look on paper. . Very intrigued.
-
Totally! But it could even be a back & forth home/school journal this way. My current p's don't have digital access.
-
same w got some teams working on self assessment ideations now! Practice practice practice
-
-
A3 - scaffold self-assessment, focus on what Ss have done, what learning/skill have been demonstrated, where they are going next
-
A3 - scaffold self-assessment, focus on what Ss have done, what learning/skill have been demonstrated, where they are going next
-
Late but I made it! I have a teacher cold (my first!).. is it weird that I love everything about my job even this cold?
-
New curriculum should = new ways of communicating learning.
-
-
Forgot new introduction: Heather J, formerly of , now from , new challenges, new opportunities!
-
-
working on a template that includes Ss' Voice each term, which is pretty exciting.
-
-
That's really cool. Seems to be that Ss' input is only going to be incl at end of yr for us
-
I have a teacher cold too! Future topic? 😋
-
A5: This term is all about building general self reflection & Name/Nurture. Next term we start targeting specific CC.
-
Two words: formative assessment. Full stop.
-
A6: It might be need to dive deep into CC definitions and then have students make connections throughout their portfolios.
-
A6: Core comps can be broken down to 'I Can' statements for Ss. Video/photos great ways to revisit learning for self-assessment
-
may need to do some trading soon?
Used to trade cards, now ed theories!
-
Don’t forget to use the hashtag throughout the week to keep the conversation going!
-
Thanks! Love this time of the week!
-
A6: It might be neat to dive deep as group into CC definitions & then have students make connections throughout their portfolios.
-
A5 using vocab, Ss reflect on core competencies each term, share in 3-way conference using written/oral reflection & artifacts
-
A5 using vocab, Ss reflect on core competencies each term, share in 3-way conference using written/oral reflection & artifacts
-
Pro Tip: Never hold a pencil in your mouth. S's for sure have sneezed on it.
-
correction 😜 with descriptive feedback in formative assessment, there is no "stop"!
-
No traitor here, just passionate advocate of s empowerment and progress! See ya Friday :)
-
A6 Discuss with students to co-create their learning process to reflect core competencies
-
using the portal has created a shared drive of communication & self-ass samples so that we can inspire one another.
-
-
-
I think it would be rich conversations for students to have about what the CC profiles mean to them.
-
Q7: Have you used “I CAN” statements to self-assess the core competencies? What else have you used?
-
Q7: Have you used “I CAN” statements to self-assess the core competencies? What else have you used?
-
I've "borrowed" these frequently! Some great sharing via and many other districts! https://t.co/pFW1rKQuyj
-
-
using the portal has created a shared drive of communication & self-ass samples so that we can inspire one another.
-
But general self-reflection, name/nurture is already the personal piece of CC.
-
considered a work-in-progress? Maybe they'll look @ other examples & take feedback since it's a soft start year
-
Yeehaw... Count me in. Who's going to start the GDoc for sharing?
-
Especially if they're working towards them for their whole educational career!
-
I'm hoping that since many of my students are familiar with the IB traits, we can translate it over to CCs easily.
-
A6: cooperative groups.... s's teaching s's, differentiation for the desired our comes of the individual learner
-
A6. Assess core competencies... meet or not meet. Most times they are exceeding. This is winning...
-
I stand willingly correctly -so true!
-
I also think the conversions that Ts have about the profiles are also powerful!
-
What portal? How do I get in on that?
-
-
.... I can.... I quests....
-
Not sure. We've been a bit in the dark with assessment for the yr & each school seems to be doing different things...
-
Know it's a work in progress, though. But Ts need to see what we're working with so we can settle in-term is 1/3 over!
-
aren't kids capable of self assessment without edufying it? Over the years education has drummed this skill out of kids. Part 1
-
Look in' for outcomes....
-
A6: Students could decide how to show these competencies. They look different for everyone.
-
It's private to SD72 T's. You have to have a login, but we luv sharing! I don't know how got them? DM me.
-
-
-
I had a friend share a couple documents! no hacking!
-
I would LOVE to spend one of our staff meetings dedicating discussion solely to assessment and core comps!
-
education's obsession with marks is a symptom of our inability to assess our place in the world. Part 2
-
A1 - record them reading and have them listen back to it following the text with a marker. Keep all year to display growth.
-
-
that's got 2b tough. W/out knowing how Ss learning will b shared how do u collect the most meaningful artifacts?
-
A simple rule that every teacher knows by heart. "It's smarter to be lucky than it's lucky to be smart"
-
It's important to teach collab/com skills before we expect Ss to self-assess. Give Ss language and thinking to use.
-
A7 - yes, "I can" statements as great discussion or writing prompt followed by examples and evidence generated by Ss
-
A7 - yes, "I can" statements as great discussion or writing prompt followed by examples and evidence generated by Ss
-
LOOOL!!! I never thought you hacked. haha!
-
And welcome to Surrey ....yes no traitors, just having fun :-)
-
Exactly. I'm fearful that reporting period will come and we'll fall short. :( Need to SEE how it looks & adjust for it
-
Follow the people you have met in this chat - you will find they are the resource.
-
staff meeting or collab time! This is worthy of quality time!
-
A7: I CAN statements are esp helpful for young learners. Success criteria & learning targets help focus the learning
-
our profession, our students, our parents have abandoned self assessment. It has no value, marks have replaced it. Part 3 - JMHO
-
-
What assessment tools are others using? FG? MyBC? What's good for SBA for secondary?
-
Every day: self-reg feedback, SRL practices, personal goal-setting a la P Dawson, setting bar high for all s
-
A2- All subjects... Plus each term they write a few of their own report card comments based on my prompted questions.
-
Last Question of the night! Q8: What resources do you recommend to look for new ideas/tools for student self-assessment?
-
Last Question of the night! Q8: What resources do you recommend to look for new ideas/tools for student self-assessment?
-
I have made a book that they will fill in every month of 3 I can statement and 1 I can't YET statement
-
Brings us to where we are now - an existing drive to re-ignite SA. What do you think of that, or is it a lost cause?
-
A8. Talk to Oh snap... GHO me.
-
This is like industrial espionage! Let's share!
-
Thank you for joining tonight!
-
Absolutely. This, I am deeply concerned about.
And assessing CCs with a letter grade? Damaging to Ss, IMHO.
-
Humour, the spice of life :) Tks, so glad to be part of
-
-
Please join 2 weeks on October 16th at 7pm PST to discuss the topic Reflecting on Practice: when & what to change!
-
I shared it last week, but the SD74 report cards make me so happy. Replace the Learner Traits w/CC? https://t.co/CqPSiaB1LI
-
Selfassessment is a lost art, not a lost cause every child should intuitively B able 2 verbalize where they stand
-
