  • mardieteach Mar 30 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1 #mschat - I have both rules & expectations. Rule-no cell phones unless they're part of the lesson. Expectation - Ss are on task.
  • MrP_tchr Mar 30 @ 8:14 PM EDT

  • BrysonBridget Mar 30 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Rules often give them ideas too .. harder to rebel when there is little to rebel against #mschat
    In reply to @Mr_Lisek
  • ChristieNold Mar 30 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A1b. Moving from "my expectations" to "our expectations" feels critical - involve Ss in the full process- create & uphold #mschat

Remember, we're talking about MS students. Less is more when it comes to expectations and the MS brain :) #mschat

Rules usually cause conflict and confrontation. Expectations open the door to collaboration and better choices. #mschat
  • MrP_tchr Mar 30 @ 8:19 PM EDT
We need to increase the expectations and decrease the number of rules. Some have too many rules, which means difficult to follow. #mschat

  • MrsJSlatte Mar 30 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2a: Beginning of class or work time, they forget, I ask them to quietly wait or pause my teaching for them #mschat
  • Mr_Lisek Mar 30 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A1b: Expectations provide a structure to class where Ss aren't surprised by what is being done. Can be cued & then react accordingly #mschat
  • MrP_tchr Mar 30 @ 8:20 PM EDT
When you tell me not to say (insert word), it makes students want to say the word more. #mschat

  • Beyond_the_Desk Mar 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: Can sharpen when no direct instruction. I keep cups of supplies any student may use (even for other classes...) No biggie #mschat
  • TeacherRunner42 Mar 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
what do you mean rules = negative? #mschat
    In reply to @KathiSueSummers
  • TeacherRunner42 Mar 30 @ 8:21 PM EDT
I partially agree: rules say what you CAN do, not what you CAN'T do. If you start listing all the can'ts you'll get the loophole Ss #mschat
    In reply to @Mr_Lisek
  • mardieteach Mar 30 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2 #mschat Ss can just get up & sharpen w/o asking. Expectation= listen during lessons/discussion, so no sharpening when it disrupts.
  • MrP_tchr Mar 30 @ 8:22 PM EDT
I expect pencil 2 b ready, if S needs to sharpen, stand by sharpener so I know you need to sharpen and I will pause for you #respect #mschat

A5. When Ss are engaged, using their voice & feel heard in the classroom a positive culture of respect can grow w/o heavy management #mschat
  • TeacherRunner42 Mar 30 @ 8:53 PM EDT
a5: MS Ss live by the mantra "rules are meant to be broken" Don't take it personally, COACH them. Make a safe place to make mistakes #mschat
  • Mr_Lisek Mar 30 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A5: Model, model, and model what should be expected from learning and class interactions. We can cut out neg. behaviors that way. #mschat

Student devices really aren't needed because we have chromebooks. IF they bring them, they keep them put away in their desks. #mschat
