Hey #MasteryChat! Leslie Hopp, first year H.S. special education T in Illinois. There's a local family restaurant my family visits weekly. There's a waitress who adores my daughter, so she always makes sure to seat us in her section. She has our drink orders memorized too!
Tim Wolff- elementary school principal in Scranton, PA. Pleasant greeting from server, prompt drinks, knowledgeable server, good food, prompt check delivery and closure. #MasteryChat
I’m Brianne, an instructional coach in Houston. The best customer service in a restaurant is when the server is sincere with their desire to provide an excellent experience including taking a moment to add a personal touch. #masterychat
Po Reffitt Intervention Specialist, Ohio. The best customer service experience in a restaurant was when our server was attentive and made sure our dining experience was just right. #MasteryChat
Good evening #masterychat! Jason, Elementary Director in N.C.! Best customer service experience...every time I go to @ChickfilA! They are always genuine and care about their customers!
A1: The Hudson in Sedona gave me my best dining experience. Our server was totally focused on US & making sure we had everything we could possibly need for a fabulous meal. Here’s my dinner & the view from that night 😂 #MasteryChat
Good evening, friends! I'm the new 21st Century Learning Coordinator in Freeport, IL. Best customer service experience with a restaurant was when a Perkin's manager let an entire busload of fourth graders use the bathrooms when we were en route to Springfield! #MasteryChat
#masterychat Hello everyone I'm Tania from Ontario, Canada I teach middle school math & Science. I appreciate someone who is not rushed to do their job but holds a great conversation with you
Sam 8th grade math from Michigan here, the best customer service is whenever a server leaves the pitcher of water at my table... because most likely I’m going to drink it #masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat Jeff from Ohio here! I work with @teachbetterteam and I love when a server is simple and real, not trying to be something they are not. They need to be good at their job, but they also need to be authentic...you know, like teachers!
I'm Angie, 4th grade teacher from Hampton. The best service my husband and I received was because not only was our server attentive, he was also very personable and seemed to enjoy what he was doing. #masterychat
Hey, #masterychat! I'm a literacy coach, teacher, & consultant in Tokyo. My dad taught me that you can tell much about others through how they treat those in service. So, my best experience was a first date w/ my now husband & seeing that he treated all with kindness and respect.
I’m Jill...interesting hook. Best customer service for me would be attentiveness and repeating my order to ensure it was heard and understood. #MasteryChat
James joining in from the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas...Can't beat the service from Fogo De Chao...seeing that grilled meat almost makes you cry...almost...staff is always on point #MasteryChat
Hi! Kristen from PA! I teach 6th grade physical science. a server picked up my 1 year old (we had 6 kids, 5 under 5, and were a mess!!) and cuddled her. One time in Olive Garden the waiter brought me a free black tie mousse cake because we found out we were preg. #Masterychat
Hello! Tina from Reading, PA - 7th grade ELA teacher. My best restaurant experiences normally all center around the waitress being kind, personable, and attentive. #MasteryChat
A1: Wait staff have to be attentive, willing to make suggestions/give advice (even when it's not taken!l, and able to multi-task. Student centered learning requires the teacher to have all of those qualities, as well! #MasteryChat
A1: I think they're similar in the fact that they're both putting the "customer first." The big difference is that students can't choose to leave...
#MasteryChat
A1: The more into it you are, the more your Ss will be. If they feel taken care of they will be more comfortable, engaged and go along with the experience #MasteryChat
A1: Similar to when restaurant staff is focused on providing their customers a welcoming and comforting experience, teachers MUST ensure their classroom is all abt the Ss and their learning experience #masterychat
A1 Just like we all have different expectations and needs when we go into a restaurant, each student has different needs and wants in the classroom so need their own path. #MasteryChat
A1 - Customer and S centered mindsets focus on the experience of the participant as opposed to those delivering the experience. This forces us to pay attention to needs and wants of our "clients" or "learners" and creates an experience for all...and better results! #masterychat
A1: when the Ss knows you care about them they will want to do well. Receiving great customer service makes everyone happy, you are more willing to work with them.#masterychat
A1: I’m a restaurant it’s always about the customer, School should be all about students - they should have choice, be surrounded by the right ambiance, have their concerns addressed, and have a teacher that anticipates their needs. #masterychat
A1: Customer centered service in restaurants is similar to student-centered learning because they always put others needs in front of their own. They make sure everyone is okay and having a good experience. Student- centered learning puts students at the forefront. #masterychat
A1: When diners have specific needs, requests, or preferences... it's normal for them to ask, and the wait staff finds creative and professional ways to accommodate them.
Ask. Listen. Respond.
The best educators do the same. #MasteryChat
I'm Kayla, I'm a new science teacher in northern MN. I don't go out to restaurants much, but when I have good customer service I feel like it's because the server knows when to come in and assist, and when to give us some space to make decisions. #masterychat
A2: Neither should be one-size-fits-all. If we are student-centered, we customize for each student. We see them as the incredible, unique human beings they are. We show them they matter. We build relationships with them. https://t.co/7Bv59Wtn8z#masterychat
A1: Every customer has different needs. That's why customer service is necessary. I need someone to identify my needs, suggest items to meet my needs, and verify my needs have been met. Ss are the same. #masterychat
Alicia Sewell, an Instructional Technology Coach for Tuscaloosa City Schools in Tuscaloosa, AL. When a waitress or owner remembers my name & order, I’m sold! #masterychat
A1: Just like patrons of a restaurant, students all have different needs, & like a waitress we (teachers) have to listen closely to what they are asking for. Have to put the customer (student) first. Warm, welcoming, and most importantly keep them coming back! #MasteryChat
A1 - Restaurants are customer centered, the focus is serving the customer. Schools are student centered but that is where the similarity ends. In schools we are fostering longer term relationships and teachers don’t get tipped for good service #MasteryChat
Customer Service Focus - Getting the student what they need when they need it.
Student Focused - Getting the student what they need when they need it #MasteryChat
A1 Like servers we are responsible for providing a quality experience, we give our Ss options to pick how they learn best and allow Ss opportunities for them to give you feedback on your service. They are our customers, let’s give them the best #masterychat
A1: We need to understand that the main focus (outside of learning) in the classroom are the students! In a restaurant people not only go for the food, but the attention and personalization. #MasteryChat
A1: customer- centered is all about ‘The Customer’ being heard. Therefore, student-centered should be all about THEIR choice as a priority
#Masterychat
A1: student centered learning is knowing what individual students need to continue to develop. Like service in restaurants it is working to give them what they need, or skills to get when needed. #masterychat
A1: we should be serving ss, not ss serving us what we want. We shouldn’t be asking for the dessert menu to order chocolate cake. They should be the ones telling US what they need or want. #Masterychat
A1: our customers in the classroom are out Ss. They come to us hungry and wanting to learn. It’s up to us to give them the chick-fil-a treatment. Provide a positive culture of service and genuine care for those we serve. #masterychat
A1: It gives a menu of options for visitors to choose from, and people in the restaurant pick what they want to eat. Menus in school help students pick how they want to show their mastery #masterychat
A1: It gives a menu of options for visitors to choose from, and people in the restaurant pick what they want to eat. Menus in school help students pick how they want to show their mastery #masterychat
A1: It's not just about how the customer is treated, it is also about what's being offered. For schools, that means the curriculum needs to be enticing so that students want what you're offering! #MasteryChat
A1: customer-centered vs student-centered services are similar b/c they both require listening to and facilitating conversations that end in a hopeful positive results. Students are a thirsty for rich information #masterychat
Like customers, Ss want to feel like their needs are being met, that someone cares about them, and that the meal will be delicious! - @MsPettyTweets#MasteryChat
A1 High quality customer focused service keeps customers coming back for more! When we focus on S centered learning, we can see the same phenomenon in our classrooms. Yes, they HAVE to be there. But you can make your classroom somewhere Ss WANT to be! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A1. Just as you are caring for all of your customers needs, we are caring for our Ss needs! The entire child's social emotional learning! We need to be attentative to their voices in learning, with choices and leading. #masterychat
I never thought that my six years in high school and college working at Long John Silvers and Gios would have prepared me for teaching! Humbling and insightful! #MasteryChat
Patrick, you are right, students can't choose to leave. However, parents can choose to remove them. We have to also be thinking about the family when providing student based learning. #MasteryChat
Always a bit suspect when comparing students to customers since it suggests that learning is a transactional enterprise. Would rather use the comparison of student to participant to focus on shared engagement with the instructor. #masterychat
Going off my response to the introduction, it's similar because we teachers need to be aware of the space we manage, and take note when students are in need of our assistance, but also know when to let them alone to discover things on their own! #masterychat
A1 you know your purpose in going to & ordering from the restaurant (to be fed) but you get to pick how you get there. Waiters/waitress might make suggestions, but its our choice. Many ppl working there make it possible for us to actually eat but don't spoon feed us #masterychat
A1: restaurant service meets, and even exceeds, the specific needs of of their customers... it’s about the diners experience not the servers. Now substitute school for restaurant, students for customer, and teacher for staff! #MasteryChat
A1: I know there's an aversion to taking about students as customers and education being a product, but we have to treat it that way in a sense.
Our goal as educators is to satisfy students enough to make them want to keep coming back for more. #MasteryChat
A1: Customer-centered restaurants aim to provide customers with the best dining experience. Student-oriented schools aim to make our students’ learning experience engaging and successful. Both want them to come back! #MasteryChat
A1: When we treat our families and Ss, with the utmost respect, we build those relationships and keep them wanting to come back for another experience. Builds commitment! #masterychat
A1: Ss are served. They are our biggest customers in education. Our service to them is to guide them and challenge them in their learning. Jumping in from Texas! #MasteryChat
I'm sad that you are equating veggies with the bad stuff. Vegetables are delicious when prepared and presented well! It can't be just dessert every day. They need a full meal! #masterychat
A2 I am going to explore allowing Ss to use learning targets to create their own map for learning. I want to create targets aligned to DOK based on standards & offer ideas for how they might learn them, but then let THEM choose their path! (All within a Grid!) #MasteryChat
A2: Ss could absolutely help with planning projects, instruction on tools that can be used, prior knowledge instruction for others, and ideas for the future/connections.
#MasteryChat
A2: At ISU @educationISU, I learned a lot about student centered learning. I want to give my students choices and adjust my plans to fit their needs. I want my students to be at the forefront of all of my decisions as an educator. I need to reflect and re-adjust. #masterychat
I understand that hesitation, but can't a parallel be drawn between participant and customer? Both are ideally engaged in the situation, benefit from the experience, and come back for more. #masterychat
A2: Providing CHOICES/VOICES = invested learners who are so in to what they are mastering/ working on they don't even realize they are learning! #masterychat
A2: If customers don't buy a dish, the restaurant will replace it. If customers really like a dish, the restaurant will prepare more of it.... Hmmm.... I wonder if the same could be said of how we plan our activities.... #masterychat@ERobbPrincipal@Eric_Carlin@E_Sheninger
A2: This is tricky. A major role of the teacher, with their experience and expertise, is to identify mastery and paths to it. Students can share their interests and existing knowledge so that, together, the class can identify which path they want to take together. #MasteryChat
A1) The restaurant experience is not just about the food 🥘 it includes the smile and generosity that is provided the moment you walk through the door. The servers energy makes you feel appreciated and valued at the establishment. #MasteryChat
Agreed — although must be careful what the metaphor suggests that may go beyond a potential limitation. Language matters, especially when it informs our pedagogical approaches. #MasteryChat
A2: Ss interests, questions and curiosities are a great starting point for involving them in planning. I have learned a lot from my Ss when I have given them the opportunity to plan #masterychat
A2 Students need to be given lots of choice to work within. The bones are there and we are guiding the trip, but they can take a greater role in planning the daily itinerary and how they will show they reached the destination. #MasteryChat
I’ve started using a PBL approach with standards in a #flipclass so they kind of get a buffet style education where they plan their own daily lessons with a unit. I do have them perform some activities such as labs that teach/illustrate concepts. #Masterychat
A2 - Students should be at the center of our planning processes. Their interests, their mastery, their level of understanding and their engagement should be the driving forces for all instruction #masterychat
A2: Teachers could do an interest survey on the types of activities that students enjoy doing. For assignments and projects, provide them with a menu of activities to choose from. #MasteryChat
A2 Take S culture & interests into consideration when planning. Create several projects and let S choice. Possibly let them in on the discussion of what the end goal is and how they think they could get there. #masterychat
A2: Students can choose their path towards the learning target. Digital, traditional, hybrid, independent, scaffolded...they can also help choose the projects or material to be learned! #MasteryChat
A2: Feedback from Ss allows us to grow and change our craft. We gain their trust to allow them to feel like they are valued and an active member of the community. #masterychat
A2: Ask them. AND truly listen and incorporate their responses. Begin with a question (#inquiry!) to explore together. Ask them for ways to examine this question. Guide IF needed. (They often surprise us in amazing ways!) #masterychat
Q2: I am switching to The Grid Method for mastery/student centered learning and full classroom alternative seating to give more choices and individualized learning. #MasteryChat
A2: Ss must be involved in the planning process for ownership & experience. Show Ss the standards. This is what we have to accomplish. How would you (Ss) suggest we do that? Ss will rise to the task. #masterychat
A2: Students feedback should drive classroom instruction & by figuring out how they learn best, teachers can adapt lessons to meet the needs for all students. Student centers & rotational models, allow students to choose how to demonstrate a LG or target #MasteryChat
A2 They could play a larger role if we listen to them and take their interests to heart. As adults we eat, read, get involved in things that interest us. Our children are no different. #MasteryChat
A2: that’s a tough one with district/ curriculum demands...but surveying them & trying to hit Ss interests thru the year & incorporate into lessons might be a good start #MasteryChat
A2: I struggle with this bc what is on our curriculum can be so rigid. But, I support offering kids *choices* in how they show me their learning. #MasteryChat
A2. Taking suggestions and ideas from students as to what they would like to work on in projects or activities following topics! Taking their interests and incorporating them into problem solving projects for them to solve and relate to real life experiences. #masterychat
A2: This year I plan to have students plan the whole year. We’ll at standards, discuss priorities, set goals, and determine learning experiences. I seriously can’t wait for school to start! #masterychat
A2 By providing input on angles by which we can approach topics, rabbit holes to explore, and methods through which they want to share their experiences #masterychat
A2 - This is something I am working on this year, student voice and choice. I want them to drive their learning by incorporating their interests into their daily learning. I want them to be able to make suggestions and not be afraid to speak up. #MasteryChat
A2: Giving students choice and letting them decide maybe not what to learn but how to learn it makes a world of difference in their lives. Prepare a menu but be sure to include a build-your-own plate option. #MasteryChat
A2: Students can choose their path towards the learning target. Digital, traditional, hybrid, independent, scaffolded...they can also help choose the projects or material to be learned! #MasteryChat
A2: Instead of making them write an essay... can they write a song, a poem, draw a picture, cartoon, or a comic strip? Let's give our kids multiple opportunities to be successful #MasteryChat
A2: oftentimes we don’t have much control over what we teach or what the students need to master. However, they can choose how to demonstrate that mastery or choose how to make it relevant for them. Give them choices in their learning path! #masterychat
A2: I was thinking about having my high school students analyzed the standard they are expected to meet and together brainstorm and break apart the language needed to meet their goal
After all, it’s all about their learning!
#Masterychat
Sure — but not many customers engage in the preparation of the product. Learning is a participatory venture where students are active members, not passive “consumers,” of the product’s creation. #masterychat
I understand that hesitation, but can't a parallel be drawn between participant and customer? Both are ideally engaged in the situation, benefit from the experience, and come back for more. #masterychat
A2: Voice and choice are what I strive while balancing what is necessary. Teachable moments from text to text, text to self, and text to world can provide mini research opportunitiesamd Genius Hour sessions. #MasteryChat
I am on the same journey as you Jeff! I’ve been getting real excited to introduce the grids to my students. Can’t wait to hear about how it’s going for you! #teachbetter#masterychat
A2: when Ts share the learning objectives and ask Ss to come up with big, hairy questions that when answered address the standard. This requires Ts to trust Ss and be willing to relinquish control. #masterychat
A2: Student choice can be really easy... menu boards, tic tac toe, offering a variety of ways to present, or just providing student voice! #MasteryChat
A2: For Ss playing a role in planning a lesson or unit is different for me w/in SPED. I am working with them to fill "holes" in their understanding. However, I can see working w/them to determine how they want to show mastery. #MasteryChat
A2: feedback. I know we have set curricula, but that doesn’t mean all products, for ex to demonstrate concept need to be the same. I’m fortunate this year to work 1-1. I will start with how do u learn best and how are some ways u want to show your learning? #MasteryChat
Q2: By building relatkonships, you’ll know what their interests & learning styles are. Allowing them to be creative & showcasing their work to a global audience proves to them that their work is significant. Also, get their feedback! #masterychat
I like this. Not every student or class is interested in discussing the standards at length, but I DO think it's important to share why we're doing what we do. Some will want to talk about it. #MasteryChat
A2: Student feedback! Ask them what they want to do more of and what they want less of.
Incorporate that in your lessons and give them credit for their ideas. #MasteryChat
I just spent three days with 35 amazing, innovation teachers who voluntarily immersed themselves in PBL training before school starts. The personalisation, choice, and exploration planned for their units are nothing short of inspiring! #masterychat#pretzelpride
A2 Survey Ss regarding their interests and passions. Keep instruction led classes to a minimum. Ask what they would like to learn more about a lesson. Allow an inquiry based #PBL as an assessment. #MasteryChat
A3: Ss teaching in the classroom has profound power of both sides. Not only are Ss empowered, Ts and other Ss get to learn alongside them.
#MasteryChat
I think you bring up important considerations and the analogy should not be taken too far. I understand the point is to step back and look at the learner experience and how to make it engaging, relevant and responsive. #Masterychat
A3 Creating situations where students become experts and leaders in the classroom creates an environment of collaboration and mutual learning. Classrooms do not belong to the teachers in the room, they belong to all the learners there! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
Still, you are standing behind a glass divider asking the employee to build your product out of materials that the company has prepared before you ever enter the restaurant. Love this convo! #masterychat
That’s awesome, I’ve been talking to a lot of other about it. I think they want to me to be the guinea pig. BUT I BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE GRID! @teachbetterteam#masterychat
Students doing the teaching is proof that they understand the standards taught, are confident in their intelligence, and willing to openly express themselves without fear of failure. #masterychat
A3: Students who take on some teaching is show they understand the concepts in addition they are challenged to help those who understand in a different way. In order to reach them, they have to explain/think in different ways. #masterychat
A3 - Peer to Peer tutoring has a HUGE impact on S achievement. We use "Geniuses" to achieve this in #thegridmethod but any classroom can benefit! Ss care about their peers opinions and thoughts which makes them valuable assets to the learning and teaching process! #masterychat
A3: Sometimes students put it in clearer terms for other kids then listening to us. Allows you to hear how they are understanding and to look for misconceptions
#MasteryChat
They get to share their ideas/explanations in peer instruction or Socratic seminars. They own the learning, which makes it more meaningful. #Masterychat
Choice = voice. Ss could play a role in choosing what expert from the field of science they'd like to invite to speak to the class, where they'd like to explore on a field trip, how they would apply a concept to a chosen branch of science during mastery assessment. #masterychat
A3: I had this experience when I was a student. I understood the content, and my teacher made me a peer-tutor. Although I think students can benefit from learning each other, I do not think designating certain Ss helps the situation. I think all need to be invested. #masterychat
A3: Ss (and adults) learn a concept more deeply when they have to teach it to others, and they often have a better way of explaining or teaching to their peers #MasteryChat
A3 - when Ss do some of the teaching, they use the language that their peers understand. They can make analogies to something they have shared interests in and we KNOW peer assisted learning works, so let them be the expert #MasteryChat
A3: Incredible benefits! To teach something shows you've deeply learned it yourself. Also, it shows them that we believe in them and honor their awesomeness. Finally, it shows that it's OUR class, not MY class. We are a community of learners and teachers. #masterychat
I'm also going 1:1 (sort of) this year -- what a great question to start with because it allows students to talk about more than just what they like to do on the computer! #masterychat
A3: As they say, if you can teach it you know it. If some students have mastered a skill or concept, they should teach their peers to foster student-student collaboration, communication and leadership skills. #MasteryChat
A3: Develop communication skills, engage in rich metacognition, and develop a collaborative culture. It's also a great assessment opportunity. We need to be judicious in choosing the timing and topics for these moments, to ensure it's a positive LEARNING experience. #MasteryChat
A3 The feeling of working as a team with everyone playing a role. We are all learners helping each other get to where we need to be and relying on each others strengths. #MasteryChat
A3: Students doing the teaching is proof that they understand the standards taught, are confident in their intelligence, and willing to openly express themselves without fear of failure. #masterychat
In my classroom, everyone is a student and everyone is a teacher. Your age or past experience does not determine your ability to grow #Masterychat#TeachBetter#122edchat#TTOTD
A3: The benefits of having students teaching are not measurable! Buy in, collaboration, mastery, engagement, relationships! I could go on and on and on!!#MasteryChat
A3: Having Ss lead/teach gives them the leadership practice and gives them the confidence to be in front of others. As well, it helps them feel like Ts and Ss are on a similar level and that everyone has an equal part. #masterychat
A3 Peers are engaged. The S builds social skills for the future & gains confidence in self, which goes a long way. Others are encouraged to be next. Its a diff way to monitor for understanding. And, I was always told that when you can teach it, then you know it. #MasteryChat
A3: SO MANY benefits! Kids see themselves as leaders, peers see each other as teachers, teacher saves their energy. It’s a win, win, win! I LOVE having Ss teach one another! #MasteryChat
A3: Learning is more cemented when you teach others. It’s like you are getting the lesson a second time, but this time more of your senses are engaged and you have the input from others to make you think even deeper about the learning. #MasteryChat
A3: Some of the benefits include an easy way to assess a student's understanding of the topic, increasing self-confidence and self-esteem in Ss, decreasing teacher talk time...the benefits are endless. #MasteryChat
One time I brought my son to my 9th grade class for an activity I called "Can You Teach a 2nd Grader?" Tested how well my Ss knew their stuff if my son could grasp it. I even scheduled it for an observation. Priceless experience.
#Masterychat
A3 It shows that teachers aren't the only ones with all the knowledge. By building experts it build students self-confidence. It's a good idea to even have an "expert" who can tie shoes in the early grades. #masterychat
A3 I remember feeling lost in HS math. Nice teacher, I just didn't get it. Then a classmate was teacher for the day. He turned on the floodlight that she couldn't. Letting our Ss teach allows them to show mastery, but also can shed light for their peers. #MasteryChat
A3: In order to teach, a student has to know the in's and out's of the topic at hand... I really love to incorporate jigsaw strategies where students have to become experts on the topic and then report back to a home group and provide the information they learned #MasteryChat
A3 No doubt students are better at something (or a lot of things) than I am! Why set myself up as the only expert in the room when everyone has something valuable to offer? #masterychat
A3: Incredible benefits! To teach something shows you've deeply learned it yourself. Also, it shows them that we believe in them and honor their awesomeness. Finally, it shows that it's OUR class, not MY class. We are a community of learners and teachers. #masterychat
A3: They then become the Masters. They will remember it better, feel a self esteem boost, and take peer leaders to a new level. Nothing better then having Ss teach something to a partner, group or class! #MasteryChat
In my classroom, everyone is a student and everyone is a teacher. Your age or past experience does not determine your ability to grow #Masterychat#TeachBetter#122edchat#TTOTD
A3: Isn’t there a quote floating out there that says something like: if you can teach it to someone else, you’ve demonstrated that you’ve truly learned it? #masterychat
A3: @Masterpol_RPS does an awesome teaching project which requires Ss to really delve into a topic, teach it to the other Ss and assess how successful they were all under the watchful eye of their teacher! #Masterychat
Yes I certainly agree with that. Some students need it pared down considerably and some will be very good at choosing and getting right to it. #masterychat
A3: Anyone still remember the words to Phil Collins's song "Son of Man" from Disney's Tarzan? 🎶 In learning you will teach, And in teaching you will learn, You'll find your place beside the Ones you love!🎶#Masterychat
In a mastery classroom, students continually take on leadership/teaching roles because each student actually has the ability to master content. It's so eye opening to some students that they are capable of sharing their knowledge. This must change #Masterychat
I totally agree! Many of our Ts are utilizing choice boards this year. I wonder if we let the Ss unpack the standard themselves and create their own choices to both learn & demonstrate mastery, what might happen. #MasteryChat
Q3: Ss teaching helps them get a better understanding of the concept...no one is to old to learn or too young- relatively speaking - to teach! #MasteryChat
A3: greater understanding and ownership. I’ve had students help explain to each other, present to each other. Loved it when Ss applauded and gave positive comments to Ss presenting/teaching something in groups. #MasteryChat
A3: greater understanding and ownership. I’ve had students help explain to each other, present to each other. Loved it when Ss applauded and gave positive comments to Ss presenting/teaching something in groups. #MasteryChat
A3: students doing some of teaching - shows true mastery, devlopes more leadership skills, empathy skills, communication...the list goes on. #MasteryChat
A3) Ss are able to take ownership of a topic. Their mastery is solidified even more because they are not only learning, they are creatively creating a way to repackage & share the concepts. + they learn to appreciate all the work their T puts into teaching prep! 😊 #masterychat
A3: Ss can learn so much from each other if we give them the opportunity to collaborate in that way. Sometimes hearing a different perspective, connecting in a way that we can’t, finding how it fits in their schema, can only come from another student. Plus, we learn! #masterychat
A2 Student voice and having a choice is important in our schools. Just like restaurants...we can improve our customer service by listening to the ones we serve. #masterychat
A3: Bloom’s taxonomy- if you can teach it, you know it. We as tt can 1, identity what ss determined is important and identify misconceptions. Ss learners also benefit- they see the info presented in a diff way. #Masterychat
A3 Students should be sharing their thinking. It shows their own analysis of their learning. Many times hearing a peer’s strategy is very effective for other students. #MasteryChat
A3: The more teaching they do, the more you can focus on developing other things, like social skills and attitude.
It's also helpful bc when they run the show, they're more invested and get more out of it. #MasteryChat
A3: True mastery is demonstrated when we can teach it to someone else. Ss as Ts always Ss to learn at a deeper level & connect with peers on their own level. #masterychat
A3: students teaching others is great way for them to demonstrate mastery. Sometimes they are able to explain things to a peer in a way that I would never have thought of. If they can teach it, they have learned it! #masterychat
This is the first year where both my teens said they weren’t excited for school:( so sad!! And they have great schools... with great teachers- but so many constraints put on teachers - it makes me sad #masterychat
A4 A T slapping a grade on a paper is pretty ineffective for S learning. But having Ss evaluate their own work based on criteria & justify the scores they give themselves can be incredibly powerful! A "C" is meaningless, a narrative that a student creates has value! #masterychat
A4: Ss are able to develop a clear understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, and what they need to improve on. This is what learning is all about #MasteryChat
A4 That is how growth happens for students and adults. We need to set goals, reflect on our growth, adjust when necessary and work to understand how to evaluate how we have done. #MasteryChat
Many comments about students as teachers. Wondering if we can assess that “teaching” by assessing how their fellow learners have changed as a result of that peer instruction. #masterychat
A4: Ss participating in their own assessment is vital to student growth. They must be there every step of the way with meaningful feedback and guidance from the T.
#MasteryChat
A4 - self assessment and evaluation is additional learning. Ss can learn where mistakes are made and reflect on their own work. When Ss are involved in all parts of their learning it fosters ownership which in turn leads to greater learning #MasteryChat
A4: Allows them to reflect on where they feel they have made growth or their strengths and in turn allows them to set goals on what to work on in the coming unit/lessons. They take ownership and responsibility for their own success. #masterychat
A4: If they can be reflective and honest with themselves they can dig deep to figure out what they still need. too many students come for extra help and say i don't know what i need help on. #frustrating#MasteryChat
Sorry to dine and dash, friends, but we just moved into our first house and I promised my wife I'd get some more unpacking done while she's out tonight! See all y'all next week! #MasteryChat
A3: Isn't there a saying that to teach is to learn something twice? I know that when I am learning something because I have to teach it, I experience deeper understanding. Also, sometimes, Ss just understand their peers better. #MasteryChat
A4: It helps students to become self-reflective and develop intellectual honesty to genuinely figure out where they’re up to in their learning journey. #masterychat
A4: Students gain insight into their strengths & weaknesses. From there, they can take charge of their own learning by setting goals for themselves and choose activities they feel will help them to achieve those goals. #MasteryChat
A4 at the end of each assessment each one of my Ss conducts a self assessment about how they feel about it. It’s great information, but I love this thought about invoving Ss in the evaluation process of their assessments. #foodforthought#MasteryChat
A4: In a sense, they always participate. But they benefit much more when we give them agency—choice, voice, & ownership—in how they show what they've learned. Also powerful to have them self-assess their work AND truly take that into consideration when you evaluate. #masterychat
A4: Many of my rubrics have two rows: one for me and one for students (who are often more critical of themselves - especially with speeches),
#MasteryChat
We need to capitalize on this! Students should reflect on learning as a process, not an end. Then they should have a chance to show their learning has changed/improved #masterychat
A4 - Self-reflection can be a very powerful tool that allows students to identify their own need, and misconceptions. Through this realization they can grow and progress! #masterychat
A4: metacognition- recognizing what they know and don’t know, identifying next steps, making a plan how to get there, how am I going to show that I learned it? #MasteryChat
A4: Noticing own mistakes and collaborate with peers as to how and why the failure - empower them to see the good and the not so good in them!
#Masterychat
A4: I had a college professor who had us do an error analysis, and I did the same with my middle school students. They were able to reflect and think through what they did wrong. #masterychat
A4: Ss have high expectations. Put them in charge of assessment & feedback & rigor will increase. All the sudden Ss are meeting their own goals rather than taking a test for a T. #masterychat
Mine do that. They get to see their areas of weakness and improve. They see their test with proficiency scales. They analyze the relatedness and we review it as we go along a unit and they see what to work on.. They sometimes suggest changes based on wording. #Masterychat
Where do you feel you need the most support to allow students to take more ownership of the classroom experience? Where do you feel least comfortable letting them take the lead? #masterychat
A4 They gain so much! They're able to reflect on their learning, knowledge, and efforts. They are also able to play a role in their reteaching or climbing. The more we believe in and involve them the more invested in themselves they become. #MasteryChat
A4: Self assessment and peer assessment teaches students their voices and goals matter. It teaches them to take responsibility of their own educational career. #MasteryChat
A4 Critiquing yourself is an incredibly hard skill to master. When we look at what we have produced and really ask ourselves if we met the criteria for success (especially if we had a hand in creating the criteria from the start) then we know better and do better! #masterychat
A4: knowing what you know is powerful!! It’s something I don’t think I fully understood until college. But I wish I had developed that skill earlier in my education. If Ss could truly evaluate themselves and what they know... game changer in mastery learning! #masterychat
Love your vision Alex! If you ever want to talk about the value of community partners in a PBL unit, let me know! Love this topic! https://t.co/yEaer7L00Y#masterychat
A4: self assessment lends itself to Ss becoming more self-directed & motivated. It gives them ownership over a specific aspect of their lives that only they can control. #MasteryChat
A4: Agency—plain and simple. The self-efficacy to moderate, assess, and improve their learning. Then they won’t need teachers any longer. Perhaps this should how we evaluate teacher effectiveness—the most effective teachers make themselves obsolete. #masterychat
A4: Ss evaluating their work allows them to see where they are and have a better understanding of where they need to go and possibly show a stronger understanding for how to get there. #MasteryChat
A1 They are similar because they put the customers or students first. It isn’t about what they want it is rather what is best for either the customer or student. As educators we must change our mindset on how to teach because student don’t learn the same as we did. #MasteryChat
A1: Classrooms are not a one size fits all! We need to taper the lessons to reach all types of learners! #inquiry based lessons are so open ended to help reach all students #masterychat I find that in restaurants I am always ordering something NOT on the menu. Haha
Our #masterychat Poll is up! Submit your answers before the end of our chat and we will discuss it during our Facebook Live Event at the top of the hour! @teachbetterteam
Where do you feel you need the most support to allow students to take more ownership of the classroom experience? Where do you feel least comfortable letting them take the lead? #masterychat
A4. SS know their strengths, weaknesses, and areas that they need to imrove on. They also gain a greater understanding of the material, working 1:1, through reflection have them develop goal charts for improvement! #masterychat
A4: So many great answers here so I’ll add in that I like my students to complete a post- assessment reflection- that way they can evaluate their strategies and thoughts and revisit them before the next test! #masterychat
A4: Ss take ownership in their learning from participating in their own assessment/evaluation. They take over as captains steering the ship, while Ts become the wind guiding it. #MasteryChat
I had students do this during summer school when I presented a rubric for them to evaluate their development. They could even identify where they were from the beginning of summer school, in only 6 weeks. It was awesome. #MasteryChat
A2 The students could help to develop the lesson plans by learning about what they are interested in. If we set the essential question the students can decide how they will accomplish the question. The power of learning is placed in the hands of the students. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A4 When students participate in their own a valuation, they grow without fear. They are more willing to take chances and think outside the box.
A4: They gain the understanding that true wisdom is knowing that you don’t know; only then is the necessity of being a lifelong learner evident. #MasteryChat
A4: I actually allowed Ss in one class to grade themselves several times. They had to justify score. It allowed reflection and more careful viewing of expectations. Many times, they were brutal and i had to remind them that they were STILL young in language learning #MasteryChat
A4: The exact same benefits we as adults and educators (should) gain: growth, mindfulness of actions, and the ability to see what we know and where we can improve! #MasteryChat
A2: Ss can give feedback & ts can give a variety of types of lessons. I love scaffolding the lessons, Tiered lessons, menus... personal responsibility builds ownership. Let the Ss help with activity learning options. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A3 When students teach, they are engaged at a much higher level and feel a sense of responsibility to engage others. That’s when the best learning happens!
A3 Last year a student told me they already knew the lesson and wanted to know what to do. I had her teach the lesson. She was able to explain things in a language the Ss could understand. A huge eye opener. #MasteryChat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
It was pretty amazing and gave me a new perspecitve of how to empliment of of that teaching and work with rubrics into what I will be doing this school year! #MasteryChat
A4: Students gain SO much when they can evaluate themselves... I am a big believer in rubrics, setting expectations early, and letting the students know what they need to accomplish to be successful on an assignment or assessment. #MasteryChat
A4 We talk a lot about failure as a means to success. That is only true if we allow Ss to have some control of their assessment/eval methods and provide plenty of time for Ss to integrate what they have learned from those assessments. #masterychat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A5 - My biggest worry used to be delivering instruction. I then created the #gridmethod and we formed the @teachbetterteam. That is when I gave up control and gave students #freedom to learn and THRIVE! #masterychat
At the very least it gives them perspective. In the past I allowed a challenging student the opportunity to teach the class. He was trying to teach and the kids started misbehaving. He looked at me to bail him out. I told him he had to figure it out! He learned! #MasteryChat
A3: I love the idea of Ss leading the lessons! Whole class explanation, peer teaching, small groups. If they can talk the talk, explain the thinking, they develop a deeper understanding of the content. #metacogition#MasteryChat
A5: After being inspired by @RaeHughart for a long time, I decided to take a risk and contact a local architect. We emailed back and forth, and he is interested in helping me out towards the end of the year. For me, it took an inspiration like @RaeHughart.#masterychat
A5: In the beginning of SY, reach out to parents. Participate in positive phone calls home to parents, send newsletters and positive emails to families as much as possible! COMMUNICATE!!! #MasteryChat
A5: Transparency is key... Everyone must be informed, positives should be loud, and collaboration should often reach outside the school walls.
#MasteryChat
The art of self reflection is so powerful becuase are involved in their learning. When student decide their grade they are deciding to what degree they understand the material. It is no longer the teacher gave me this grade. They did. #MasteryChat
A4: Reflection is a Key process in true learning, by letting students reflect in their work and at different levels using the Socratic method to get them to understand where they can grow, they become stronger learners for life, not just school! isn’t that the goal? #MasteryChat
A5: Mentorship!!! Students who have mentors are more likely to be successful in school. So many students do not have support at home and we need to bridge the gap with admin and community partners, involve and engage parents in student centered activities #MasteryChat
A5: Creating a comfortable classroom environment from day 1!
When they know/feel we care, they trust you with their families and the people who are important to them.
#masterychat
A5 - I try to do this as early as I can, when decisions are made I consult all stakeholders and I call/conference call/conference with all concerned. I also invite everyone to meetings because that way everyone can weigh in and have a voice, Ss are always invited #MasteryChat
A5: You will need them to come in and see it. Still to this day seeing is believing. They will need to see it work and see the value Ss get from it, so invite them in. Don't take no for an answer #MasteryChat
For me, it would be how to give them ownership and hold themselves accountable. Tough for 7th graders sometimes. I know I can't control what they do, but how can I be effective? #MasteryChat
A5 Clear lines of communication and access to information lead to strong relationships. Fostering a community of learning goes a long way. S led conferences, adm present in classrooms, & open doors for Ps all add to a learning community. #masterychat
A5: involvement, strong relationships built through trust and understanding, be transparent, communicate and assume the best in all situations #masterychat
A5: It's about relationship building. We ALL want what's best for Ss. We must learn to trust Ss enough to not only hear, but provide, what they need. School won't look like it did last year. #masterychat
A5: After #flipgridlive, I am really digging the idea of providing voice to not only students and teachers, but parents and the community... it takes a village! @flipgrid#MasteryChat
A5: To have a relationships-first approach, you must first build the relationships! It's all about relationships. Engage in true dialogue, which builds trust. And trust opens the door to building true relationships. #masterychathttps://t.co/7Bv59Wtn8z
A5 Post the menu outside your restaurant (as it were). Be transparent with what you do and where you get stuff from, create tasting menus to lure people in, and give away kindness for free! #masterychat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A5 build relationships and value everyone's voice. invite non-student stakeholders into the classroom for presentations, Q&A sessions, and other projects. allow these stakeholders to provide perspective and feedback #masterychat
A4: it comes back again to ownership. Accountability. Be responsible for their learning. I love a glow and a grow for a S in a Eval. One thing they did well, one thing to work on for next time. ❤️ #growthmindset#MasteryChat
A5 We do well with school and Ss, my team and I have had parent workshops to help involve the parents (haven't had much success, but we're planning fresh) and I'm excitedly working on module 6 of Teach Further to bring in the community! #MasteryChat
A5: I start by asking the parents to follow my classroom FB page where many activities and projects are posted. This year I’m planning to have a year long research project, and presentations will be done in May, after school, with parents in the audience. #MasteryChat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A5. Doing a classroom @flipgrid that I am sending out before the school year starts and as a first assignment for everyone to get to know everyone else. #MasteryChat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A5.2 and if you haven't checked out @teachbetterteam site, you should!!! I'm excited about that part of community involvement this year! Goes right along with our high school academies. #MasteryChat
A5: to connect everyone into a student centered and relationships-first apprach we need to open our doors, lines of communication and tell our story. Pull everyone in to help support and tell our story. Let them know we have a road map, they are in the drivers seat. #MasteryChat
A5: Building engaging & connected classroom requires continuous and effective communication. By communicating clearly via technology @seesaw@Flipgrid@ClassDojo@RemindHQ you build relationships! #masterychat
A3: Sometimes I have older readers teach younger readers. This empowers the older student and helps them to solidify their skills. Struggling readers need to feel successful and allowing them to teach improves engagement and confidence. #masterychat
A4: Self evaluation is a critical skill that most adults aren't even good at. We tend to see through rose colored glasses and aren't honest with ourselves.
Developing this skill early will go a long way into them becoming self aware adults. #MasteryChat
Appreciate the word “investor” in the question. Every investor wants to see a return on his/her investment. If the learning culture can celebrate that ROI, then everyone wins. #masterychat
A5.2 since we have Ss from 48 countries, it is always good to have parents come in and share a part of their culture with our learning community. #masterychat
A5 I use @Seesaw to connect my families. They love being able to see their child’s work. I also love that it has a built in translation piece for my SEI families. #MasteryChat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A5: All learning starts w relationships. We developed student-centered guiding principles as a staff to drive our decision making. When we develop anything we check our decisions against these principles. #masterychat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A5: Build relationships. Get all stakeholders involved. Invite them to visit classes, come to school events. Let them know they are valued. #MasteryChat
A5 It takes time and communication to grow comfort. The proof is in the pudding so to say. We need to keep building relationships and with that comes trust. #MasteryChat
This is fantastic! In my adult ed world, we did this for every lesson we taught. Before a training segment started, we'd have student review our lesson plan materials and even exams before using them. #MasteryChat
A5: Recognize first the importance of relationships. I missed that in one class my first year. Fixed it, and never looked back. A welcoming, inclusive environment for all is also important. #MasteryChat
A3: I wish y’all could be a fly on the wall in @steffedd4th@msharris1711 classrooms! Student teachers exude confidence and expertise in their topics! #MasteryChat
A5: make learning meaningful & real. Let’s Ss help decide assignments or opportunity to show mastery. Differentiate. Be flexible. Show parents you care by tapering the class to meet the needs of all learners. Invest in your kids. They are worth it! #MasteryChat
Many edus mentioned relationships and rightly so. It is the center of all that we do. When class sizes become too big and the schedule does not allow for morning meeting or discussion time we lose the ability to build those relationships with Ss. #masterychat
A5: By daring stakeholders to remove themselves from the center of their own universes to see the endless possibilities of living a life of servitude. If all stakeholders, students included, live out a life of servitude; the community flourishes. #MasteryChat
A4: Reflection is a huge part of learning (and teaching!). Learning from mistakes, evaluating what they’d do differently next time increases student ownership in their learning! #MasteryChat
A5 Communication with parents and stakeholders! It is always an area of growth for me. I could have my students do a weekly summary video to share with parents! Take that off my plate! #MasteryChat#TeachBetter
A5: make learning meaningful & real. Let’s Ss help decide assignments or opportunity to show mastery. Differentiate. Be flexible. Show parents you care by tapering the class to meet the needs of all learners. Invest in your kids. They are worth it! #MasteryChat
A5: Communicate, communicate, communicate. Share your curriculum with them, discuss their needs and wants and have several touch points throughout the process.
Don't let questions linger longer than needed. #MasteryChat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
Relationship is connected 2 culture, emotion, equity, bias & mindset.... 💚 finding connections using cooperative learning, @ruler moodmeter to help student understand their feelings & empathize with others & creating opportunities to learn about all & each other #MasteryChat
A6: In a safe and comfortable classroom, an outsider can notice a class that runs with little distraction. Ss are engaged in learning and helping each other grow. Ts proctor discussion but do not overdo it. Ss respect the space and show their care through learning. #masterychat
Q5: How can you connect all investors (students, parents, administrators and community members) into a student centered and relationships-first approach?
#masterychat
A3 By allowing Ss to teach 1 another, UR allowing the class to tap the 90% tier. #1: Better retention 4 the Ss teacher #2: The Ss listener more likely has less stigma asking a peer #3: The class is independent! UR the guide on the side & not sage on stage! 🥅 #masterychat
A6 A safe and nurturing learning environment takes time. We must teach our Ss how to communicate in groups and led discussions. This should be practiced and modeled until the Ss can take the lead. #MasteryChat
A6 in my class student centered = controlled chaos. The first time an administrator came in my room they were caught off guard by the volume but what they saw was Ss engaged and learning together in a way only collaboration and exploration allow! #MasteryChat
A6: It would be hard to find the Teacher...Ss would be working in natural groups, at different paces, possibly on different material. They would be talking with peers and searching out info, not sitting back passively in class. There would be discussion, engagement #MasteryChat
A6: An outsider may initially think student-centered looks and sounds like controled chaus. However, upon further review they would come to see collaboration, realtionship building, communication skills, leadership...agian, the list goes on. #MasteryChat
A6 Ss would be working across a number of different content areas , collaboratively or independently w/ a variety of seating options & work spaces. Work is displayed & choice is evident. There is a bit of a mess, a healthy buzz, a great deal of comfort & respect. #masterychat
A6: To some, chaos. To others, real-life activities which transfer to skills needed in today's workplace. Fairly confident all would see happy, engaged Ss interacting with curriculum in a meaningful way. #MasteryChat
A6 It would look like the Ss being leaders, engaged, and active, T floating and interacting, and learning happening. Safe and comfortable means the Ss feel confident enough to question, share, and be involved. #MasteryChat
A6b: To outsider, a student-centered classroom looks like engaged student leading and learning alongside the teacher... never heavy doses of sit and get.
#MasteryChat
Help students do more than simply receive their education; help them experience it.
When they live what they learn, they will remember for a lifetime.
#masterychat
A6: This is a good one! I think in a safe and comfortable room, students look relaxed - in their body language. And an outsider will see how the teacher values ALL student voices by making sure that a single voice doesn’t dominate. #masterychat
A6 - ooohhh student-centered classrooms do not have a front of the class, Ss are able to move around the room and work where they are comfortable; boards for collaborative work, work stations for working alone or in pairs, and floor space so they can spread out #MasteryChat
It's not easy to accept our own failures. It has a lot to do with the historical negative connotation that failure has. Failure, no matter how small, just wasn't acceptable.
Not all failures are tragic and the sooner we recognize that, the better. #MasteryChat
A6: when I observe a student centered classroom, I rarely notice the teacher, the students are actively engaged in some sort of project based learning, the room is buzzing with learning. The teacher is a facilitator or guide on the side not the sage on the stage. #masterychat
People have said mine looks like chaos because all the Ss are doing different things and moving around to different places and groups. I tell them it’s organized chaos. I know what’s going on everywhere (mostly). #masterychat
A6: Perhaps, to an outside observer, the learning may look chaotic or unorganized, but when Ss are at the center, one must dispose of all preconceived notions of “safe” or “comfortable.” Some may think “safe” is all Ss sitting quietly or passively. Not true. #masterychat
A6 Organized but enjoyable chaos! Ss getting what they need when they need it and showing what they learned in ways that suit them. Safe and comfortable comes from assurance that failure is not forever and that we pick each other up when we fall #masterychat
A6: Ss posing questions to guide the lessons, students teaching their peers, students leading P-T conferences. Safe & Comfortable looks like encouraging each other no matter the outcome. T praising when Ss are risk takers and showing confidence in their learning #masterychat
A6: Student-centered= busy chaos where every student has a problem they are trying to solve. Ss know what the end goal is and what to do when they accomplish their desired outcome! #MasteryChat
A6. A safe environment which is S led classroom is a place where Ss are working together with respect and kindness, you may see a variety of projects, Ss helping one another, sharing ideas in collaborative efforts. #masterychat
A6 Students working on different activities based on what they need. Flexible seating, T moving throughout the room, choices. “Safe and comfortable” looks like Ss at ease. They know the expectations and take ownership of their learning #MasteryChat
I have the same growth mindset board in my room. I plan to integrate this with ELA instruction to five struggling readers the confidence to take risks and do their best work. I am very excited to dig deeper into growth mindset with our students this year. #masterychat
