We were talking about Washington DC today and the students were curious if it was named after George Washington and what D.C meant

A1: When Ss connect with Ss from other states, they see that they have so much in common.

Yes, many of my students have only been as far as Fairbanks! They were amazed to see classes of 25 & an all boys school

In Alaska, connecting with Ss other places helps them to understand Geography and Alaska is not below Mexico.

Haha Yes! Many classes have gotten confused about physically where Alaska is when we mystery skype. We are NORTH!

My students learn Gwichin. Over skype, they count for other classes. Many of them didn't know Alaska has so many languages!

Oh Wow! The more I learn about Alaska, the more I realize just how BIG the state is! So much to learn!

Being new to 3rd grade, it helps to connect to other 3rd grade teachers in other states because no other 3rd grade teachers here!

But it gives our Ss a different perspective on themselves - to see that others find them so interesting!

A3: I have a K teacher connected with a K teacher in Maine - they and their students share school garden info via Ghangouts

A3: In my position, it is helpful to collaborate with other states to share our understanding and get other great ideas to steal!

Even little things: our class size is 9. We chatted kids in schools larger than where we live! A lot of great perspective!

Oh cool, Maine probably has some great ideas of what to plant. I want to connect with Finland since same climate!

Have they tried to plant the same thing and then compare how they grow - that would be cool if it is not too hard for Ks.

We are in same "boat" accessible by plane or barge in the summers... snowmachine if brave!

I don't know if Flat Classroom is still a thing or not-used to have 8th/9th grd participate- great connection around great topics!

I haven't checked lately - initially they were just showing eachother things they grew - cute!

We have done flat stanley! Great way to penpal... really encourages writing for an audience
