I send postcards to all of my students over the summer. I tell them how excited I am that they're in my class. I've had students run up to me in the yard on the 1st day- holding it in their hands. Makes a connection from the start. #bfc530
I do face-to-face welcome with Kindergarten students. I sent postcards of welcome to my newest and youngest students (as my class is split...JK and SK). #bfc530
I have made a @SmorePages that has some introduction info as well as a parent survey embedded in. Sending that out via email & social media today. #bfc530
I create videos and link to them on my classroom website for any students who are curious about my class over the summer. They typically show highlights of my summer and a preview of what we learn and do in class #bfc530
Not yet, but hoping to make phone calls home this week and next to introduce myself to families. Many of my Ss are new to the school as well this yr so I may meet a few if they come to school this week for a tour. (school starts next week) #BFC530

A good chunk of my students and their families don't have computers so I rely on old-fashioned snail mail- I also love the process of sitting down and putting pen to paper over the summer and thinking of each one of them. #bfc530

My daughter got a "Nice Job" postcard from her Spanish teacher the first month of middle school. Just the fact that it was handwritten and not an email gave us such a great impression of her and the school. #bfc530

When I was in elementary, I did a letter for each student. Definitely more challenging to do this w/ 130 Ss. I like the postcards, though! That makes it a wee more manageable. #bfc530
This was the case in my previous school. Mailings were the way to communicate important information to parents/guardians. My new school also relies on mailings, but also has information available more readily online. #bfc530

Yes! Adding your photograph to your Google+ profile if your school has Google Apps, or to your LMS is a really important first step if you are new in a district. People want to get to know new T's but things get busy! So pics help! #bfc530
We are still in an elementary setting, so we use it as an opportunity to drop off their school supplies and meet their new teacher(s). A lot of our 6th-graders have younger siblings, so they help bump up our attendance figure. #bfc530
Amazing . Our Meet the Teacher night is always a few weeks into the school year & very few attend.
And they made it a Friday night this year. Not sure that will help attendance any.

Completely agree. We are about a week and a half away from teachers coming and I’m buried. There never feels like there is enough time in the day. Control what you can control and do your best. Agree #YouGotThis#bfc530

For you as the admin, it would be amazing, especially if handwritten. It would also be time consuming. Hard to pick which class to focus on, too, like incoming freshmen or something. #bfc530#goals

As a parent, I loved seeing my little on Class Dojo. The teacher did an amazing job. Especially if you are a working parent and you can't do pickup or drop-off (shoemaker's kids!), having that app or a class SM account is really great. #bfc530

I used to send a postcard to each student in my advisory saying hello, telling them how excited I was to meet them & asking them to bring in a picture that represented them & their summer. We then introduced ourselves using them & decorated a corner of the room with them. #bfc530

I leave our class webpage up from last year until two weeks into the school year and encourage incoming students to preview what we might do this year. Our open house is two days before school starts, so I met 75% of my students before the first day. #bfc530

At one of my old schools we had "GOTCHA" cards in the main office. Each teacher was given ten and asked to give them to students over the course of the year when they were "caught" doing something great. Maybe something like this? #bfc530
It would be great to send personalized postcards but it would be time consuming. You look at what has to be done and prioritize. For me as principal, I think that would probably be unrealistic. We have about 700 students. You could write one for each staff. #bfc530
