A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
HI everyone! Rachel Herron here from the PATINS Project! So many new things are happening in the testing world! Looking forward to the chat! #PatinsIcam
Good Evening All, Julie's moderating tonight (Orthopedic Access to Curriculum and AAC, AT Team Development). Lover of lake living and of accessible technology. #PatinsIcam
Happy to be joining #PatinsIcam this evening. I am Kelli, Specialist of Autism, Specific Learning Disabilities, Chrome Accessibility, AEM & AT Integration.
We will post questions as Q1, Q2, etc. Please tweet your response with A1, A2, etc. Don't forget to add the hashtag to each tweet or you will be talking to cyberspace! #PatinsIcam
A1: Formative means the test will level to the student’s ability as the student responds during testing. Previous testing was summative and all students took the same questions. #PatinsIcam
A1: Formative Assessment attempts to gauge Ss knowledge and provide feedback and guidance along the way, whereas Summative is an evaluation at conclusion of a unit, for example. #PatinsIcam
This is great news! Hoping that ALL Ss will feel some level of success and have a chance to show what they know and allow for some stretching of skills knowledge #patinsicam
And you can start hooking up your AT to demo this test, give students and your IT dept a chance to see what it will look like and if it will play nicely with your student's technology #PatinsIcam
A2: The primary mode is online. Paper, Large Print, and Braille forms will be
available for students as an accommodation Kelli provided a link:https://t.co/Y5XLXrNXmh. #PatinsIcam
Exposure to the tools so they are not brand new during the test is key! It also supports our desire for students to have LIFE tools, not just TESTING tools! #PatinsIcam

A2: you can request a paper copy (through your district test coordinator, I believe), which may be helpful for students who need it for lite tech answering, eye gaze, light boards, etc. #PatinsIcam
A4: There are sample banks of questions for every grade level and subject so that the student can experience the testing and accommodations in advance. https://t.co/txICai82no#PatinsIcam
A4: Make sure that the student's daily activities are accessible and that regardless of test accommodations, their learning is fully accommodated throughout the year. #PatinsIcam
A4: the best thing you can do to to prepare kids for the test is to give them tools for success the whole school year! Even if there are setbacks on the test, they will know that their life tools are there to count on! #PatinsIcam
A4: Prepare them as you would for most any test. Engage them, tailor the curriculum to their interests, talk about self-regulation strategies, create a calm environment, use tools throughout the year like TTS even if not allowed on the assessment #PatinsIcam
A4: I always appreciated a preview. That includes trying to mimic the classroom too. The first memory I had of "the test" was having our seats moved and weird folder things around my desk, and that bothered me. Previews and practice helps everyone #PatinsIcam
A3: print on demand is available as well. Some downsides to using paper copy of the test is that it wont be leveled to meet the student were they are. [graphic of powerpoint from IDOE regarding print on demand] #patinsicam
A4: Ss should have opportunity to use multiple accommodations w/data collected to ID most beneficial for tasks at hand. These should be used regularly during the other 175 days of school. A statement from the Indiana Resource Network: https://t.co/nHNmnkGxT7#PatinsIcam

I love this Rachel. We know that learning is improved and can carry over to tests, when appropriate strategies/accommodations are applied on a regular basis! #PatinsIcam
A5: If the student is able to access the test electronically, with only a few exceptions, such as printing out an enlarged graph or diagram, or embossing a graphic, then this is an appropriate accommodation. #PatinsIcam
A6: Students should use testing accommodations that they also use every day while on their devices to keep the testing experience authentic and test what the student knows rather than their ability to adapt. #PatinsIcam

A4: Ss should also have ample opportunity to practice the TECH ITSELF, which can be THE barrier as well as practice on the Tech for Ts and IT staff. Resource: https://t.co/ur7TKiKjjW#PatinsIcam
A7: You can preview the Desmos calculator tool by accessing the sample questions for math at your student’s grade level. You can practice daily on the Desmos calculator by going to https://t.co/guFyLe4PNq or on the free Desmos calculator app #PatinsIcam
