Hello #caedchat! Happy New Year! I'm exicted to moderate tonight's chat! I'm an instructional coach in Escondido, teacher of 18 years. Looking forward to starting 2018 off strong!
Karla from NAS Lemoore in the Central Valley. I teach 7th grade NGSS science, acgaming elective, an intervention elective & sports league coordinator. #caedchat
A1 a) Our staff had a rough end to the school year, but the re-entry (which was difficult) went really well. b) Fall #CUE was a true highlight! #caedchat
A1) 1. I was accepted into my 3+2 masters program which was extremely exciting!
2. I passed the CBEST which makes me one step closer to finally becoming an educator!
#caedchat
A1: On a personal note; hiring a new superintendent for @SanDiegoCOE & creating a position for CIO (Chief Innovation Officer) Super Exciting for SD County! #caedchat
A1 PBL and using microcontrollers to teach computer programming. Ss having something physical to program deepened understanding and engaged otherwise interested students. #caedchat
A1 Doing #PBL in World History diversified the curriculum. No longer focusing just on Greece/Roman but including Persia, Assyria, India, and others. Students were thrilled to see trends re-occur across cultures #caedchat
A1
First, we entered our 3rd year as a school and added the last of our staff and now have 8th graders!
Second, we have been working really hard to implement restorative circles and build + relationships with students.
#caedchat
A1: I discovered a PLN, and I started to have individual conferences with Ss during class sessions. Really helped with building relationships! #caedchat
A1: Being flexible - move class aides around, took on a student teacher. Kept vision - lots of new, young staff. Attrition is low for us typically. Need to learn from them as well! #caedchat
A1. We made great strides towards trauma informed classrooms. And. We are getting most of our faculty on board with blended learning strategies. #caedchat
A1: made it through 1st semester teaching a new course, and found some ways to help Ss enjoy books and writing - despite their expectations! :)
#caedchat
A1 I created a Family STEAM night based on my summer experience at @USNASTEMCenter. It was well attended & praised. Continuing to dive into NGSS & add 2 @AmplifyScience which I field tested & love. #caedchat
Depends... some Ts use it to start class. Some to end class. Some in the middle of class :) I know that doesn't really help. I guess the answer is... when it is needed. #caedchat
A1: I did Hour of Code week ahead of time with my middle schooler's (completely by accident). Allowed me to take them & push in to elem classes. Turns out the peer piece was more valuable than the coding. #caedchat
A1: (2) Planning & hosting my partner teacher’s retirement party celebrating her 20+ years of service & the Glee program she led at our school. #caedchat
A1) One, I became a Google Certified educator and presented at our #EdTechTeam summit and two, I had a fabulous time with my student teacher, @katkelleyedu. She's going to be phenomenal. #CaEdChat
A2: Last year, I removed homework (aside from nightly reading) and Accelerated Reader. Not sure what I'm getting rid of next, but these are staying away! #caedchat
#caedchat A1: Two successes for me are: first off learning new strategies and seeing results, thanks QTEL and secondly collaborating with students on how to make my lessons better, thanks @CSUSM Hack a Lesson
A2: I want to eliminate the arbitrary limiting of revisions of work by students. They should have as many chances as they can get to get the grade they want! #caedchat
A2: I plan to eliminate (some, most, all?) the stress I bring home... more audiobooks on my commute so I can unwind and focus on fam when home #caedchat
A2 I want to eliminate worry. I know that sounds hard, but I worry a lot about the kids, my colleagues, and that I may not be doing enough to help.
#caedchat
Right!?! I feel it so often. I want to do so many things, but time is limited. And I've learned that my family time is critical. I'll be the best I can be, but boundaries are important. #caedchat
A2: I'm going to try to work my very very best at doing my very very best at not attempting any unrealistic, boring, mind numbing, overwhelming, verbose, run-on, self-aggrandizing long winded lecturingisms, that simply result in drooling, snoring or otherwise... what? #caedchat
A2 Eliminating lots of late evenings at school due to elderly caregiving responsibilities and try not to stress when essentially small things don’t get done. Focus on Ss learning experiences in my classes. #caedchat
A2: I plan to eliminate second guessing myself. I will examine, listen, reflect, learn collaborate, get feedback but no second guessing. It can be crippling #caedchat
I 💯 agree. It's debilitating and I'm tired of the "never enough" thoughts. I was just nominated for two awards during this last month. I must be doing something right! I need to give myself a break! #caedchat

A2: Carefully letting go of activities & lessons that are traditions or seasonal, but don’t ask enough of our students. Eliminating these in order to create time & space for things like #MakerEd#Makerspace#MysterySkype#HourofCode#caedchat
A3 My #oneword focus for 2018 is “LESS”: less stress, less people-pleasing, less television, less stuff, less shame, less weight (I could say more, but…) #caedchat
A3: ENERGY. I want to leave it all in the classroom, and then come back the next day with the same amount. Need to learn self-generation and self care though! #caedchat
A3: in past I have had an educational focus word this year it's JOY-really need to focus on my health/mental health and be intentionally joyful #caedchat
A3) self-acceptance because when you build confidence and happiness from within you can share that with the people around you and the experiences you encounter #caedchat
Ask yourself this, Marilyn: if your best teaching friend were saying the same things to you about herself, wouldn't you tell her she was beating herself up? #caedchat
A3: I have a lot going on personally this year and I think that #Happiness needs to be the theme. If what I'm doing (in my classroom or not) doesn't make me feel content, it's out! #caedchat
My one word: Connection. I want to continue to explore how to help Ss feel connected to their peers and their purpose. Feeling connected means meaningful relationships. Meaningful relationships = student success #caedchat
A3: Differentiated. Why? I am in 2nd year of new grade/subject. Gave myself a yr to common coreify myself. Time to trust my experience/instincts and apply what I've learned full inclusion to my room. #new#caedchat
A3: My 1 word #focus for 2018 is #BELIEVE. I need to believe in myself and my Ss. I need to have the belief that I will continue to improve as a teacher and that what I do matters. #caedchat
A3: My #oneword2018 is trust. There are many many reasons why but needless to say I will focus first on continuing to be trustworthy then aiding trustbuilding in my district. #caedchat
A3: I want my one word for 2018 to be REAL. I will make real relationships with my peers & my students, I want to give students real experiences, and I plan to grow & eat more real food (esp this one, honestly) so I can keep up with my ten year olds! #caedchat
A3: My one word is Balance. I need to find balance between school, work, and my personal life. I often give too much time to one and not enough to others depending on the time of year #caedchat
A4 Working on relationships with challenging students. Ss will care about the subject when they know you care about them. Trying the 2x10 method. 2 min/day talking about anything, 10 days in a row. #caedchat
A4) When I begin teaching my number one goal is to create a learning environment where my students feel safe, accepted, supported, challenged, loved, and place where they look forward to coming to each day!
#caedchat
A4: I am rolling out a whole innov8ive PD plan starting tomorrow morning. I basically added #UDL to my PD opportunities. Varied times, medium, and content. And I want to improve my skills as an #EdTechTeam member #caedchat
A3 PUSH (nicely)-- A huge focus this year for me is to get elementary teachers to try coding. Ive started a group for teachers to discuss successes and issues with coding and robotics in the classroom #caedchat
A4) When I begin teaching my number one goal is to create a learning environment where my students feel safe, accepted, supported, challenged, loved, and place where they look forward to coming to each day!
#caedchat
A4: real-world applications. what lessons should we draw from the achievements and mistakes of the past? how do we dignify each and every human's destiny? how do we justify our own? #caedchat
A4 I'm excited to be adding our homeroom vision to @Quantum_Academy with the inspiration from @CHansenCA. We start this week with cross-grade level team building in our whole school! #caedchat
A3: I have a lot going on personally this year and I think that #Happiness needs to be the theme. If what I'm doing (in my classroom or not) doesn't make me feel content, it's out! #caedchat
A4: I plan to bring positivity into whatever I am doing whether it be a school commitment or work. A positive mind set can truly change so much for yourself and even others! #caedchat
A4: I plan to bring positivity into whatever I am doing whether it be a school commitment or work. A positive mind set can truly change so much for yourself and even others! #caedchat
A4: I am going to continue to find time to not just observe classes but engage/ teach as well. I have done so in several different rooms and schools this year. I am a teacher who is currently serving as an Asst. Sup #caedchat
A4: I’ll be adding “risk” to my teaching/learning. Having been a teacher almost 25 years now, if I don’t take some new risks... I may end up.... #caedchat
A4: Intentionally asking myself & Ss the question, "What is possible from this?" This: act of kindness, moment of perceived failure, conversation, choice of bravery, act of insensitivity, etc. Life gets more interesting when we think about what is possible vs. probable. #caedchat
A3 Balance. I have to find a balance between family and work. I’ve been pretty focused on my profession as a single gal but now family needs me. Going to be tough not going out to present or represent for a while. Thankfully Twitter is PD at home #caedchat
I love every chance I get to teach classes...this year, I gave away several Get Out Of School Early (GOOSE) cards to staff so that I have a reason to teach a class!
#caedchat
A4: I am going to continue to find time to not just observe classes but engage/ teach as well. I have done so in several different rooms and schools this year. I am a teacher who is currently serving as an Asst. Sup #caedchat
A4: I've never had a problem balancing humor and fun with strong expectations. But because of a variety of circumstances this year, I've found it much harder to do. I need to add more FUN to my day! #caedchat
Yes! I was actually thinking about exactly that as I was typing. I’ve been inspired to renovate everything, even my classroom space, after belonging to Twitter for just a few years. #caedchat

A4 find even more ways to get parents in my classes interacting and helping during labs, etc. Giving Ss more feedback in person & during grading. #caedchat
A5) Maybe through creating a digital flyer including the hashtag and what it is and then sharing it on other social media platforms and with school districts to share with their staff.
#caedchat
A5b: those of us who write blogs could also do a post or two about #caedchat - I probably have in the past. If so, time to update, and if not, now’s the time!
A5 We really hope to a widespread audience from all parts of CA. The more the better!
We have added new mods (announcing at the end) to help w/ just this.
#caedchat
Honestly, the TwiiterEdu community has had the biggest impact me than anything in 24 years of teach. The positivity, sharing, and so many great ideas. We're lucky we opened ourselves up to the experience. #CaEdChat
A5: Every “regular” should personally invite someone for coffee and show them@how easy it is to participate and how many awesome people you get to meet #caedchat
#caedchat A4: This is my second year in @MakerEdNCSD a group of teachers and community members bringing the Maker movement into the classrooms because of this I bring making and create little makers into my classroom.
Exactly! This is how I introduce different programs like @Flipgrid@breakoutEDU and @quizizz to classes...I then offer to help a teacher plan and implement one with me so there is an extra set of hands!
#caedchat
I do something similar @tsschmidty . I send a #HyperDocs of dates and times I'm available to teacher 1 hour segments. Teachers can sign up for spots each month

A6: Well, if you are like me and teach a college course, make it a requirement that they participate in Twitter chats (it's how I got two of my students here tonight!)
#caedchat
I'm so glad you joined tonight! You will love how Twitter can be your personalized PD! Check out @cybraryman1's list of Twitter chats and hashtags! #caedchat
A5: I think if #caedchat's regular chatters took a moment to share a week's topic or reached out to individuals personally, that would have a *huge* impact! Spread the word! <3
A6: I guess, by talking about specifically how my teaching has changed since I got onto Twitter and joined a PLN. And to talk about how awesomely supportive, patient, and encouraging this group is!! #caedchat
A6: Share ways that make the chat experience smooth. You don't need to read *every* tweet in the chat! Also, using a site like Tweetdeck really helps to organize thoughts. #caedchat
A6) I never heard of these chats before the course I am enrolled in and think this is an incredible resource for educators to connect and learn by sharing ideas, advice, questions, successes, and failures. I will share this with my peers aspiring to teach. #caedchat
A6: Being able to show them topics ahead of time or being able to show them how a chat works? Getting Admin to let them know it is ok to use twitter. #caedchat
A6: When I visit superintendents and school leaders I actually show them what they can do & learn on twitter. Once they learn about the magical hashtag it's all good! #caedchat
Sometimes the ppl I teach with don't think they need Twitter or additional PD online...I can tell you that I only found out how much I needed to keep growing when I found Twitter and #caedchat!! #caedchat
A6: The art of the invitation is important! "We need you because..." is always stronger than "Come join this thing please." It changes the focus from "we are awesome" to "YOU are essential to our awesomeness." #CAedchat
A6 I have been sharing #caedchat w/my @CompassCs staff - this is a great place to learn & grow; excellent #PLN of dedicated professionals & life-Long learners!
A7: Alignment and its limits; realistic changes to grading policies; maybe a book study; developing trust between colleagues, and I could go on :) #caedchat

I’ve done some social media engagement contests for our local union - it’s fun, and somewhat effective - hard to predict what’s going to work sometimes
#caedchat
A7 I’d love to see us
a) use these answers and
b) put up an occasional poll to make sure we’re discussing what’s on the minds of #caedchat participants
A7: Diagnosed or not: Insights, Practices, and what 'can' I do... So many students fall through the cracks. This would take more than 1 chat and by a team. #heavylifting#caedchat
#caedchat A7: I would love Liberians to be part of our discussions. They have a wealth of knowledge and they are super resourceful. So a topic should be “Liberians”
A8: unusual to see a yes/no question, but the answer is YES, we can say THANK YOU to @Dowbiggin and @RaeFearing for helping make #caedchat awesome in 2017!
In reply to
@AppEducationFox, @Dowbiggin, @RaeFearing
A5 & A6: As a BTSA Advisor supporting new teachers, I feel we need to share with our beginning teachers how exciting & useful a productive use of Twitter can be. #caedchat
A8 I'm going to miss @RaeFearing my #gtachi buddy and the amazing @Dowbiggin. Thank you for all that did for #caedchat and wishing you an amazing 2018!
Special thanks to @Dowbiggin and @RaeFearing for volunteering their time to moderate for #caedchat in 2017. Wishing you both all the best for 2018! Hope to see you pop into chats every now and then.
