Here we go with Question 1!
Q1) Do you divide your team up into smaller groups or teams during the off-season? If so, how do you do it? If not, what other measures do you use to foster competition? #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: We have Families, drafted by position coaches, captains from the leadership council. Grades/Attendance/Competitions. Matter of Fact Top 3 teams thus far going to College Football hall Of fame tmrw #txhsfbchat
Here we go with Question 1!
Q1) Do you divide your team up into smaller groups or teams during the off-season? If so, how do you do it? If not, what other measures do you use to foster competition? #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) Our team is divided into competition groups, our training is actually outsourced in-house by a group of dedicated and knowledgeable sports trainers. Most of football staff checks in but coaching multiple sports #Txhsfbchat
A1 We went back to squads this year. We identified 6 players with leadership potential and we had a live draft at our last team night. Squads are competing in a series of events with things like food and swag on the line. #TXHSFBCHAT
I think it’s best to have one team in the offseason. All focused on the same goal. PR’s. EVERYONE celebrates them, EVERYONE competed against themselves. Sometimes our toughest critic is ourselves. If they can learn that we all win #txhsfbchat
A1. Guys with relatively same numbers together. One may be 10 pounds heavier on a max but theybdfive to outwork each other which increases numbers and competition #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Seniors draft teams. Each team earns points for certain things. Workouts, 7 on 7s, summer camps, community service, spring sports participation. Winners get steak dinner at Team lock in, 2nd place got hamburgers and pork & beans for everyone else. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) We divide our kids into 7 groups. Our leadership counsel has a draft for teams. We have + pts and - pts everyday. Have competitions every day during our Boot Camp and all summer. Kids really responded and competed at an all time high level.#TXHSFBCHAT
A1) Yes we group by position group. WR coach is in charge of WR, O-Line Coach Oline, etc. Head Coach takes the high character high-risk kids. We use it to help attendance and accountability. #txhsfbchat
A1: we don’t have the numbers in the off-season due to multi-sport guys (great problem to have) to have teamsbut we foster a lot of competition between the classes and in the classes. For example, rising juniors are a bunch of dudes, so we use them to push the rest #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) I haven’t done this. I’ve been studying up @CoachRikStewart and his leadership group. I want to implement it if/when i get another job. Would love for other things guys! Let me know! #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT Coach_Timmerman: Good evening everyone! My name is Jake Timmerman and I coach at Northside HS in Georgia. Tonight we will be discussing Off Season Teambuilding & Competition. I look forward to reading everyone’s responses! #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT Coach_Timmerman: Here we go with Question 1!
Q1) Do you divide your team up into smaller groups or teams during the off-season? If so, how do you do it? If not, what other measures do you use to foster competition? #TXHSFBCHAT
A1. I did last year... got closer to season and we lost focus on it. It is a great way to improve off season. Best thing we did was BOOT CAMP week prior to Spring Ball last year. It went great https://t.co/MeAHD9ZSa2#txhsfbchat
A1: (1/2) use Marine Corps background to divide kids into 2 "platoons" and squad leaders chosen by the coaches, then put the kids into groups based on ability/personality. Put the talented but soft kid that needs to be pushed with the hardest worker, etc. #txhsfbchat
don’t think we need to separate in order to elevate.HS kids -diffferent than college kids. They just want to be a part of something. Majority of our kids will never bcelebrated during a game, least their PRs can be in offseason. Break into teams sometimes that’s lost #TXHSFBCHAT
Head coach and I have talked about implementing the same strategies the coaches on here are mentioning. It seems that having proven leaders help guide the younger players is a valuable tool, and also helps coaches keep their minds. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: (2/2) Squad leaders are responsible and held accountable for their squad. Coaches don't ask where Player X is, ask the squad leader and he better know. Any punishment given out, squad leader must join in too. Squad Leader can be fired and replaced #txhsfbchat
A1: No we stay in our squads from the fall until new Captains are selected late in Spring. We lift & workout in position groups, competition is not an issue because we all lift together the competition is to walk out each day being 1 of the best #TXHSFBCHAT
Here we go with Question 1!
Q1) Do you divide your team up into smaller groups or teams during the off-season? If so, how do you do it? If not, what other measures do you use to foster competition? #TXHSFBCHAT
Great responses so far, Coaches! Here is Question 2
Q2) Do you use any type of point system for your teams to compete for during the off-season? If so how are points earned?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A1: We still emphasize the team mentality but the subgroups help create a competitive edge until we finally get to see our opponent week 1. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1) we draft teams the first week of lifting back in the winter. Seniors draft teams and guys who show up afterward are assigned. Third year I have been apart of it and I think it is a must for any program #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: we do team but have a majority defense or offense which consists of individuals and formation recognition than spend last 30 mins doing team period of the side we don’t start with. #txhsfbchat
A2: I'm interested in seeing how coaches balance this. I want competition, but I also want support. Help those guys get over the bar, whether they are on your team or not. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) Attendance pts (can be + or -) dressed correctly, spotting, working at your level, pts for going up levels, winning competitions, being a teammate, etc.... #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: When we do the draft the seniors are given a list of items/activities with point values. Throughout the summer we will attach points to certain competitions. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Points are earned for max lifts and testing, every 3 week grade check, effort in off season, and after school sport or extra lifting participation. When they reach 400 points, they earn their shirt #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: (continued) everything should be centered around teaching kids that their actions affect others. Whether they are 15 and taking a rep off blows up the play or if they are 30 and get fired from work for constantly being late and now cannot provide for their family #txhsfbchat
A2) we do have point systems but I have been apart of programs that use point systems for motivation. Our kids love to lift, like to run, love to complete. #txhsfbchat
A2: I also give the seniors a spreadsheet that has the summer weights attendance of each player. This will be my 3rd summer so we will have the weights attendance % form the last two summers for each player. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) attendance for lifting, competitions, participation in other sports, attendance at other school events and activities, grades, etc. can lose points for discipline, grades, lack of participation #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: For squad competitions points are 10,8,6,4,2,1. Additionally I adapted @JeremyPlaa point system from his @XandOLabs report on the 21 hour FB program. Points are earned for A/B grades, weight room attendance, playing multiple sports, and athletic performance. #TXHSFBCHAT
Great responses so far, Coaches! Here is Question 2
Q2) Do you use any type of point system for your teams to compete for during the off-season? If so how are points earned?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2) we do not have a point system but I have been apart of programs that use point systems for motivation. Find what works for you.
Our kids love to lift, like to run, love to compete. #txhsfbchat
Teams during the offseason. We helped our Head Coach pick captains and the kids had a draft. Kids loved it. We compete on fridays (SledPush, TugofWar, Sock Wrestle, Buddy Carry, etc.) Our head coach keeps a point system for winning teams, grades, etc.) #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) Point System is in place, just never used it. We Use the You Show Up, you get stuff first system, which usually results in getting the New Equipment and all of those things. #txhsfbchat
A2: @CoachCurtis35 splits the guys up over the summer for the Redhawk cup. He came up with a bunch of different competitions. Kids enjoyed it. That’s the only time I’ve been involved in that kind of true point system. I’m sure if you dm him he’ll give you details #txhsfbchat
Great responses so far, Coaches! Here is Question 2
Q2) Do you use any type of point system for your teams to compete for during the off-season? If so how are points earned?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Continued - we are small rural school our kids hunt, fish, wrestle since birth, we just steer this competitiveness to Lifting Clubs / Record Boards / Grades Beautiful Color Framed Photos celebrate both individual accomplishments but team accomplishments. #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT Coach_Timmerman: Great responses so far, Coaches! Here is Question 2
Q2) Do you use any type of point system for your teams to compete for during the off-season? If so how are points earned?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2 cont: Points are lost for D/E grades, discipline referrals/suspensions, no call/no show at team activities etc. Posting updated numbers weekly and the squad leaders used the info in their drafting. #TXHSFBCHAT
We implemented a system last off-season, but did not truly committ to it. I will be make sure that the system is thoroughly planned and executed next off-season.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: (1/2)Keeping w/ Marines theme, players earn (or don't) a rank based on testing in weight room, running, and most recent report card. Kids wear soccer captain armband in certain color that signifies what rank they are. As much as football is a team game... #txhsfbchat
A2: Not points but Numbers - Core Lift Max / Records both personal & team & Totals 1000 Club (Bench, Clean, Squat, Press) etc. Better your numbers betters the teams numbers #TXHSFBCHAT
Great responses so far, Coaches! Here is Question 2
Q2) Do you use any type of point system for your teams to compete for during the off-season? If so how are points earned?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: we use a point system that gives points for maxes, good grades, extra points for extraordinary maxes. We also take points for failing, missing, and trouble in the classroom. Also trying to make guys at the top more accountable for getting people to work hard. #txhsfbchat
A2: (2/2)...offseason is a lot about competing w/ yourself and improving yourself for the team. Rank is point of pride for individual hard work and teammates can see who is putting in the work based on their rank (or lack of one if not enough points earned) #txhsfbchat
Here we go with Question 1!
Q1) Do you divide your team up into smaller groups or teams during the off-season? If so, how do you do it? If not, what other measures do you use to foster competition? #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) Yes we do. We give citizenship points of doing something out of the ordinary to help someone...i.e. cleaning up a neighbors yard, mowing their yard, etc.... Citizenship is a big part of our program and will be rewarded. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: not points but I add in competitions everywhere. L drill 1vs1 for pushups, for drill split the room 1vs1 for pushups or 6” pushups position 1vs1 split the room for pushups. Gets the guys cheering and competing #TXHSFbChat
Great responses so far, Coaches! Here is Question 2
Q2) Do you use any type of point system for your teams to compete for during the off-season? If so how are points earned?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: competitions with fundraising is something we’ve done everywhere I’ve been. At Westwood we played ultimate football, kickball, dodgeball, basketball, relay races, anything else @CoachCurtis35 could pull out of his PE closet haha #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) Every Friday before our lift we do some type of competition usually non football- we’ve done b-ball, mat drills, dodgeball, reps at bench a la combine (95 for FR, 115 for So and 135 for JR), tug of war, rock/paper/scissors and so on. Always looking for new ideas. #txhsfbchat
Coach are those NOT football related? We would consider them all football related - building a better athlete overall. Just curious on thinking? #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I just pulled discipline numbers for th last quarter. Not too bad but a few kids will have some explaining to do to their teammates about their choices. Peer pressure used in a positive way #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: We had a team competition day that included an obstacle course. I saw @Coach_BHarris have his off season teams have social media competitions. Most team members together at a school spring sport competition wins points #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: besides the typical non-football competitions that most teams do, I try to make as much stuff a competition as possible. Always yelling "It pays to be a winner!" Might be running 110s &just randomly let the winner sit out the next 1. Leaders usually still run tho #Txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT Coach_Timmerman: Here we go with Question 3!
Q3) Do you incorporate any type of "non-football" related competition drills into your offseason workouts?
#TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT LCGrizzlyFB: A3) Yes we do. We give citizenship points of doing something out of the ordinary to help someone...i.e. cleaning up a neighbors yard, mowing their yard, etc.... Citizenship is a big part of our program and will be rewarded. #TXHSFBCHAT
LOL kids love them, Moms not so much sewing appears to be a lost art - LOL some of them sew on themselves. they get in trouble if not on shorts from Captains, #TXHSFBCHAT
We use multiple social media challenges to get our players around people they don’t normally spend time around and to also encourage school spirit across campus!!! #txhsfbchat
A3: I love non football competition drills. Best ones we did last year were Tic Tac Toe with cones... and a 3on3 basketball tournament. Might have to add dodgeball this year. Took a sports psych class where we played dodgeball daily. Studied how we responded to stress #txhsfbchat
A3) we coaches stay on top of grades in the offseason simple & plan. I have been apart of a staff who use point systems to motivate kids. Again, find what works for you.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: football related, but one competition I like to do during fall camp is give each position group a football and write their name on it. They have to protect that football at all times, but also try to hunt the other teams' balls. You dont want to lose your football #TXHSFBCHAT
A4) We have a cooked for one giving winning team steak. Also depending on team finish, they get choice of lockers, equip checkout, bus seats, etc... #txhsfbchat
A4) top offseason/summer performers get first crack at gear (no matter grade level), top squad at end of summer gets some type of item only they get, we do check points where we give stuff away- shirts, socks, bags, etc. #txhsfbchat
A4: To start off season, everybody gets a plain white t-shirt. When they reach 400 points, they receive their official shirt with our slogan. Its amazing how much the kids don't like wearing the plain white T #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Don't want to tell the kids about the new surprises but I have feed those lunch who made 10 consecutive workout days , top3 families tmrw field trip. top 3 will also have no locker room clean up for spring #txhsfbchat
A3: also we try to set up a lot of drills to be winner stays. Emphasizing you cannot get better if you cannot stay in the drill. You would not want off the field on Friday, why do you want out now? #TXHSFBCHAT
A2. Working on a point system now pts for lifts, maxes, grades, community service.. point deductions for bad grades, discipline issues.. team leaders will be responsible for inputting their groups points. Starting it after our spring break and will see how it goes #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT Coach_BHarris: txhsfbchat We use multiple social media challenges to get our players around people they don’t normally spend time around and to also encourage school spirit across campus!!! #txhsfbchat
Coach we also quiz our kids on core values all the time. Make them recite them. Use fingers on our hands to memorize them. Example: Our thumb is tempo, we stir the pot with it. #txhsfbchat
A4: We have a team lock in where we feed the winning team steaks. 2nd place got hamburgers and everyone else had pork and beans. Also got days off of conditioning to start Camp. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Like mentioned earlier, reward players by giving individual ranks. Make it a big deal, & the kids will too. They wear that rank with pride and when you have everyone's results posted around the lockerroom they are motivated to do better and compete with each other #txhsfbchat
A4: we did some nice shirts for 750 900lb clubs. Have an elite level called Iron Knight where a plaque goes on the weight room wall that will never come down #TXHSFbChat
A4- food is always good. Our HC is good with his smoker. Coaches select a player of the month and we award a set of dog tags at a team function. Looking into some more school swag and tying it to first pick of gear, numbers, lockers etc #TXHSFBCHAT
Attempting to instill that mindset to limit turnovers on offense and creating turnovers on D by emphasizing "hunt the opponent's ball" and "protect your ball" You'd be surprised how crazy the kids get into it. It gets extremely competitive #txhsfbchat
Tonight’s chat has been amazing! Let’s bring it home with our final question.
Q5) What is the number one thing you do in the off-season outside of lifting weights and installing your scheme that you believe helps you be successful on Friday nights?
#TXHSFBCHAT
Hell wife has got fried chicken, garlic mash potatoes & asparagus cooking while I am chatting with you guys PST time LOL She is a Saint - Saint Jules . Food is still away to motivate most men #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: We do a community service day during the summer. Gives kids an opportunity to give back to those supporting them, and spend time together. We invited our female athletes to help out last summer. Loved seeing all the kids working together. #TXHSFBCHAT
a5: Coaches love players and players love each other. WORK at strengthen that bond. WHY and the PURPOSE! Ours - #LeaveALegacy (NewtonBoyz) - Purpose to create strong men(academically, physically, mentally & spiritually) #BringTheHammer#txhsfbchat

Q5) What is the number one thing you do in the off-season outside of lifting weights and installing your scheme that you believe helps you be successful on Friday nights?
#TXHSFBCHAT
A4 We also use a combine style evaluation system to measure our kids. If a kid makes Ironman (75% att) he can then earn a shirt for his point club 500, 600,700, 800, 900, 1000, or 1100. I also maintain a record book for all kids broken down by grade, position... #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) I know you said besides lifting but having workouts at 6:30 in the ams has been huge. We get to find out who really wants to be a part of the program. It’s takes discipline, sacrifice and commitment to get up early and be on time. #TXHSFBCHAT
