Q1: We keep our protections very similar. We go half man half slide. We have a call built into 5 man protection which allows us to flip the slide side incase of 5 man pressure. When it comes to drills we do half line blitz pickup (slide) then bring the backs in...#hogfbchat
A1: in college we ran 4-down and Will, back picked up mike to Sam against a 4-3. Against an odd front tackles on ends, center on nose, guards read backers inside-out and call βout outβ depending on blitz. If guard was free they cleaned the pocket. #hogfbchat
Ahhh itβs #Hogfbchat time. As always, Iβm Robert Ortiz. OL Coach and JV OC at Murrieta Valley HS in Murrieta, CA. Your favorite coachβs favorite coach as some might say!
A1: I will FOREVER love Inside/Outside zones!!!!!! No matter what new flavor of the month Offense is being ran as, Zone will always be my favorite. Favorite drill double teaming single-man sled working to LB flow. Simple and effective. #HogFbChat
A1: simplest-run our 6-man protection and QB reads 6th man if blitz and throws hot to RB. Also have locked the Ts and gone Slide with middle 3. Uncovered after contact has double response. Donβt do it a lot as you can see... #hogfbchat
A1- My favorite is BOB protection. To really stress it, we work blitz pick up but I don't let them punch. I just let them slide their feet to make sure they slide to the right person. Can't punch to help someone else. #hogfbchat
A1:. Not a huge part of our offense so it's a weekly adjustment of our 6 man protection. Generally we try to base 5 box guys and QB is responsible for edge pressure.
#hogfbchat
A1: we do Half slide protection and work a ton of 3 on 3 pass pro against various stunts and blitzes. We try to get the running backs involved as often as we can #Hogfbchat
A1 my favorite 5 man protection is when we correctly block 5 defenders. Typically that comes out of half slide. Build the skill by having 1, 2 and then 3 OL work their set vs a rush. #Hogfbchat
A1. We throw a lot of quick game and see mostly 40 fronts, we go a lot of Big on Big with our center stepping to the 1 and eyeing the Mike. For drills we do a lot of sets vs. Different alignments, mirror drill, and post/Kick weave. #Hogfbchat
A1) Half-slide is great for most scenarios. Drills are secondary to SKAQ & teaching proper drive-catch & knee to crotch relationship. Remember drills donβt build skills, they provide context of when/how to use the appropriate skills. #hogfbchat
A1) Two that I like are: 1) BoB with uncovered OL having dual read on LBs. Itβs easy to put in and use vs teams that donβt blitz. 2) One side is half slide to their gap and backside is sifting, taking the most dangerous 2 remaining defenders. #hogfbchat
A1: Not a big straight 5 man protection guy, but we half slide just about everything. Reps, whether they be run throughs, half line blitz pick up or live reps. Exposing them to all stunts and blitzes they will see. My job to make sure they are sliding the right way π€·π»ββοΈ #Hogfbchat
A1) Closest weβve used to true 5 man protection in the past was man, half slide with back responsible for box LB to first outside box to the man side. Iβm curious to see what others do as we will do some things different in protection this year #hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat A1: a little too inconsistent from week to week last year but will trend towards more half man/half slide this year. In terms of drills, anything to stress either section in their assignments.
A1: my favorite 5 man protection is Big on Big and I like to drill it with group work against any front/blitz/stunt I can imagine. Working them in blitz pick up as a whole line is good, also like to work with just tackles on vertical and angle sets and when to use them #hogfbchat
A1: we donβt have a lot of 5 man pro. Would probably go big on big with uncovered man help or half slid depending on dudes on D. Walk through, blitz walk through. Some full line drills at 3/4 speed. Sets on air. #hogfbchat
A1: I don't necessarily have a fav pass pro. Love doing twist and blitz pick ups in pairs and groups. Always emphasizing footwork, inside leverage and communication π€ #hogfbchat
A1: havenβt done a ton of 5 man stuff, if we do we keep same half slide principles. Work same basic fundamentals, maintain inside leverage, stay square etc. #hogfbchat
A1) Being completely honest hereβ¦but I canβt remember the last time I was involved in a true 5-man protection. I normally utilize a 1/2 man 1/2 slide and the back is oppo the center. Back usually helps set the edge on rollout while BS OT hinges. #hogfbchat
A1) contβ¦situationally we might flare the back out to the flat as a check down if we know the defense is being vanilla and not bringing pressure. But I can count on one hand the amount of times thatβs happened. #hogfbchat
A1) Slide protection. QB must get rid of the ball. WRs must get open. Iβve seen OL coaches utilize lateral movement drills will keep OL shoulders parallel to LOS to prevent defensive front 7 penetration. #HogFbChat
A1: we have gone BoB, makes it simple . We will work a blitz pick up and make sure we hammer donβt chase, and staying square. Usually start practice with pass pro vs pass rush. Defense gets one move got to hold the block for a 5 count. #Hogfbchat
Tough to put this answer into such short character limits. If we have an odd front with odd backers, guards read mike to will/Sam and if the BOB or Jack come off the edge we take MDM. #hogfbchat
A1 cont: we will rep slides vs. stunts, blitz pick up with RB/QB, attack the looper, and recovery drills every week. Recovery is most important drills we do. #hogfbchat
Half man always protecting the inside. We watch scout film and let the kids see what will be coming at them and rep it half speed then full speed. Kids make up their own calls for pickups #HogFbChat
A1) Slide and Man protections. Like to work half line drills initially to get footwork established. Footwork is everything. We then crank it up!
#hogfbchat
A1) Also huge believer in showing it on the board, on film/in classroom, walking it on field, 2v2 pass pro that covers all possible games, live blitz pick up session with D. #hogfbchat
Have not done a lot of five men protection. Primarily a 3 step drop team where I have my lineman take two steps back and engage or cut immediately. Really stressing this off season on learning how to coach a true kick slide scheme #hogfbchat
A1: Half-slide. Will have check calls to overload pressures, will slide 4 and lock BST. Also have a check for 5-man front and will go BOB. We will work things like mirror drill, tons of walk throughs, and blitz ID/pickup. #Hogfbchat
A1 center call it to the 1 tech, call side has gap backside has man. Count down the line guard has 1 tackle has 2 back has 3. Gonna try out hinging this year see how it goes. BLITZ PICKUP.. until we are almost late to team O #hogfbchat
A1) Slide protection. QB must get rid of the ball. WRs must get open. Everyone is happy.
Iβve seen OL coaches utilize lateral movement drills with an emphasis on keeping OL shoulders parallel to LOS. Preventing defensive front 7 penetration in a focus . #HogFbChat
A1: don't like 5 man... but if we did, slide half man away from call. Qb needs to watch for call side pressure. We ran that way in high school. Drilled full line during blitz period. Uncovered looking to clean up the garbage #hogfbchat
A1: BOB/slide protection is a staple for us. Most of our progressions are segmented into being in the slide and B.O.B. In all progressions we make sure to identify where the QB is so athletes know where they need to protect. #hogfbchat
Half slide protection and we work a lot on getting our C to recognize/ communicate where we want to slide based on the looks the LBs are giving us #HogFbChat
A1 contβd) With that in mind your drills should replicate game scenarios and you should be able to see your drills show up on film. Also blitz pickup session w/ RBs is critical imo #hogfbchat
A1: Anyone have any pass pro drills Iβm all ears, personally donβt think we work it as much as we need. Trying to find that balance between run and pass blocking at the moment. #Hogfbchat
We will go empty from time to time. Normally gets us a 5 man box so we just base protect and QB throws off edge pressure. We can check to half slide if we need to that week
#hogfbchat
A1: mostly have used half-slide, but ran into problems last season & could only run 6-man w/ RB. Prefer to use bird-dog approach so that they see what they need to see w/o over focus on full-speed reps. Prefer full-speed reps in team script #hogfbchat
A1:Not a huge part of our offense but will have 50 pro from time to time.
Big on big with uncovered guy looking to help, eyes up not allowing A gap run throughs.
QB knows he is responsible for #6
#hogfbchat
Hello #Hogfbchat!! First timer here. Just here to watch and learn
21 years old, Head Freshman Football Coach/OC @ Cypress H.S...
Yes... @SenorBlazer was my OL coach back in the day.
A1: Tell my Center to get depth and know his point and donβt come off of it. Defense wonβt dictate our protection. Have had smart QBβs that have know who they want to get hit by if they bring 6.
#Hogfbchat
A1: we half slide the center over and man up the backside. We are changing he way we protect out of empty but half slide has been good to us.
In season: Pass Pro Period
Off season: get after it with a pad by manipulating the slide and the defensive techniques.
#hogfbchat
A1: we half slide the center over and man up the backside. We are changing the way we protect out of empty, but half slide has been good to us.
In season: Pass Pro Period
Off season: get after it with a pad by manipulating the slide and the defensive techniques.
#hogfbchat
A1: Man Fan. Must teach the qb whoβs hot and whoβs not. Design routes combos to replace pressures from depth and adjust line calls for pressure that walks up #hogfbchat
A2: same half slide protection we use when in 5 man, but QB switches his hot read. We run 1 protection for all our drop back passes. Only our techniques will change #Hogfbchat
A1) contβ¦I take that back. The word drill broke my brain for a sec π We have gone empty from time to time, but itβs always BOB. Q is responsible for IDβing 6th man presnap. #hogfbchat
We will go empty from time to time. Normally gets us a 5 man box so we just base protect and QB throws off edge pressure. We can check to half slide if we need to that week
#hogfbchat
We call our 6 man protection Rifle and Lugar. The RB goes opposite of the call for the BSDE. We donβt have really any drills just rep it a lot in individual with the RBβs. Then use it in our passing team section. #hogfbchat
A2: For us we will full slide and the back has whatever comes off the edge on the backside. Again we try to throw any blitz/ stunt combo we may see on Friday so our kids know how to react. #Hogfbchat
A2: Still half slide / half man with the same drills mentioned in my first response to the first question... Now the back is responsible for for the man side LBs (dual read inside out). #Hogfbchat
A2: ABC/123 with RB/H picking up #3. Normally work half line with the gap and half line with the man side. LIVE, LIVE, LIVE pass pro drills! #hogfbchat
A2. This is were we get the rb/hb in the mix with half slide and full slide. Drill is what we call hot side/dummy side. One side is live and the other is taking two steps like they are live. #Hogfbchat
A1) Do use 5 man much, use a slide protection mostly. Teach them not to chase down as something usually comes back through. Blitz walk through and 2 on 2 work. #Hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A2: HM/HS or FS 6-Man. For full slide, first uncovered lineman will start the slide with the back filling off his butt. Drill wise, breaking it down to small situations related to covered and uncovered gaps.
A1: The Noel Mazzone 4 down to the playside LB. Mostly zone scheme playside. Man backside. All lineman look for work to help your brothers when uncovered. Half line vs blitzes and stunts. Plus reading the box. #hogfbchat
A1: 1 of 2 My fav. 5 man protection is the 1/2 slide with the back in a route to the Man side. Blitz period is my favorite way to rep it. We pass Set to leverage mostly so we will do βSet βem up drillβ and practice pass setting to the Dβs leverage. #HogFbChat
A2) Favorite 6 man pro: Full slide - back on the EMOL. We had a nice drill where it simulated the pass pro technique of front side and backside guys. This was all done on the sled as a circuit so it really maximized our reps/time with 16 OL athletes. #hogfbchat
For "quicks": Aggressive, full gap protection away from the call side. Usually use the FB for the sixth gap. Could also use TE. I want them essentially down blocking their gap.
#Hogfbchat
A2: full slide with H back or RB picking up backside C gap or half slide with RB reading the A gap to A gap. Blitz pickup is the best for this as well, also 1 on 1 pass rush with RB and LB #hogfbchat
Q2: We normally use half man half slide like in 5 man. Have different calls though to turn it into slide protection. I also do like straight called slide pro depending on who you are playing and who is on the end. Y/H is good but back...not always great #hogfbchat
A2 - We take the down 4 plus the mike and the RB ALWAYS has the WILL. No matter where he lines up. Helps the QB with who the hot read is. We just live rep it. Have to have game situation to see who they have. #hogfbchat
A2 see answer 1 lol we mainly do a 6 man unless we run empty. QB accounts for 6th defender, if he gets sacked it ainβt the OL fault in emptyπ #hogfbchat
A2: same as A1. Gap one way/man the other. Back fills opposite depending on the βslide starter.β If see lots of pressures will go full slide and put RB in DE. Donβt like that, but gotta do what gotta do... #hogfbchat
A2) We still use half slide, letting QB control the read LB. RB goes out in all 3 step game and we feel QB can control the LB via HOT read. Try to make the LB never right. Inside WR to call side must read what QB reads to make him wrong. #hogfbchat
A2: depends on drop. BOB on 3, 1/2 slide on 5 step. Back always goes away from strength, slide always goes to. B/S tackle stats BOB on slide. Drills are same, try to incorporate backs into walk through, and whole line work. #hogfbchat
A1: We use BOB for QDP. If we are running DBP I prefer 6 man protection using the RB in either halfslide or fullslide protection. As far as drills go we focus on fundamentals during Spring Ball and 2-A-Days. Blitz Pick-up period is a daily must during the season. #HogFbChat
#hogfbchat A2: (cont.) I focus more on 6 man related to the QB and having him identify what threats he is then responsible for. Q must always know who he is responsible for.
A2: if we get a 5 man box we base the box and RB has first threat play side. We will convert to BOB slide protection if we get threat on backside and back then has to double read inside out on playside. 6 man box is BOB slide #hogfbchat
A2: we married our 5 and 6 man protection by having our RB that fills read the backer he is blocking. If backer doesnβt show then he releases.
See above film.
If we want a play action game rb lines up βwrongβ and fills opposite after run fake.
#hogfbchat
For deeper drops, what we used to call 5-step: BoB on the call side, half-slide away. Back picks up the extra rusher to the call side.
I do a lot of mirror drill with OL and backs. Also blitz periods - walking/bird-dog speed up through full speed.
#Hogfbchat
A2) We use the same protection for 5 man and 6 man, we just have the back hunt for open a gap and fake zone into it and pickup backer. In my opinion I really dont think you should differ in the two.....KISS......#Hogfbchat
A1: We use half slide protections, front side or call side gets to protect outside gap. BST has man on no matter what. BSG has either man on in an even front or he kicks to cover the 4 in an odd front and then the tackle has LB. #HogFbChat
A2) 6man we use full slide and 1/2slide combo.Fav drill early on is working the slide footwork on bags w/ QB in the drill. He needs to see the difference &feel the pocket. Also answers the βwhyβ for OL to understand the big picture of the blocking scheme #wedontuseKISS#hogfbchat
A1: 2 of 2. We also work a two on one pass pro drill where the OL have to pass set to a defender and have the 2 defenders work different stunts so we have to maintain gap responsibility. This could really be a long answer!! π #Hogfbchat
A2) Combo Protection. Man by BST and slide for everyone else. 1st man in slide is 1st out on game or if covered by DT. RB must make him right. Never want a RB on a DL. #hogfbchat
A2 The best thing I ever decided to do was OL and RB blitz pick up. Draw up cards with every blitz your opponent does plus some extra. Make sure your kids know it #hogfbchat
A2) Full slide with H back responsible for C Gap. I love including the QB in our BPU to make reads, escape pressure, step up in pocket etc. Has been great group period for us. Otherwise Iβll let the OL guys share all the pass pro drills haha #hogfbchat
Correct. We see a TON of odd fronts and the one 4-man front we see is an under. So it generally keeps the RB on backers with our opponents. OCCASIONALLY if the DE spikes into B the RB is taking on a bigger dude. But it keeps our skinny guy off the big guys. #hogfbchat
A2 - like everything you need to set situations that mimic what you will see in game. It may not be the current week , it may be for a look down the road. The more things they see, the better prepared #Hogfbchat
A1) Half-slide is great for most scenarios. Drills are secondary to SKAQ & teaching proper drive-catch & knee to crotch relationship. Remember drills donβt build skills, they provide context of when/how to use the appropriate skills. #hogfbchat
A2. We do a lot of 60/69 protection. RB steps up and picks up right ILB in 60 and left ILB in 69. Also we roll the pocket or go full slide. RBs need to take pride in their blocking in our offense. Love 6 man protections. #HogFbChat
A2: 1/2 man, 1/2 slide, sometimes full slide with a backside edge insert, RB/F/TE. As long as we stay on level in a full slide life is good - do as much full line work as we can. Will split interior and OT/TE and work individual skills/sets. #hogfbchat
We split the defense along the center line. The OL half slides away from protection responsible for LBs opposite the call. RB takes LB to call side of the center line. We use a Mike call to adjust our center line based on scouting. #hogfbchat
A2) Itβs already been covered but 1/2 man 1/2 slide, back goes oppo the center. (Keep the TE in and have the back go to the center for MAX Pro). We used East/West for calls in college. Since then Iβve used the same, also Brown/White. #hogfbchat
A2) OL BOB + back checking 1st pass mike to call side.
Drill? Blitz Pick Up with OL+ RB.
OL & RB are expected to work as one, minus helmets, to pick up stunts/games. This drill is more eyes+technique/fit than anything else. OL&DL bang enough.
#HogFbChat
A1) 5 man, just a straight vertical pass set...a healthy share of 1 on 1s, blitz pickups: live and walkthrough...think even with the big guys, a healthy bit of walkthrough convo around responsibilities is key before the live stuff...
#hogfbchat
A2: Set to 1/ shade. 1/2 slide to him. RB takes BSLB. Roger/ Louie if even. Line, mirror, sets on bags, set & punch, set catching med balls. #HogFbChat
A2: Regular slide protection but if BST does not have a threat to the called side (to his R or L) he has end man on the LOS. RB fills inside of BST instead of out. We work on footwork and punching 10 yards vs different looks (emphasis on PS foot heal to toe alignment) #hogfbchat
Definitely a possible scenario. If we had an over ideally Iβd like to do what you said and keep the G on a 3 and have the RB pick up blitz. #hogfbchat
Start with @OLPerformanceβs YouTube page. If you like what you see his website has insane content. Take your time and absorb what heβs talking about. It took me a bit to grasp and Iβve been to 3 seminars. Itβs all biomechanically based. Once it clicks tho π³ #hogfbchat
In reply to
@Trench_CoachJJ, @Velocity_LS, @OLPerformance
A2: (question) in drop back pass pro do you prefer a RB blocking an end with full slide vs RB blocking a LB while locking the tackle & guard to linemen in a half slide? #hogfbchat
A2
Just to add some variety....
Against a stack (which we see a ton of), QT locks on 4, QG and C have N and M, SG and ST have stack and 4. Back has free stack. #hogfbchat
A2: back in the Option days we were full slide, but the more you throw it the less you want your RB on DEβs. So itβs now half slide w/ back checking A-B-out #hogfbchat
A2 cont. we do more repping than drilling. Our scout team D is bringing it during team session. They do a great job preparing us for the week. #HogFbChat
A2: slide side/ man side depending on call in huddle. RB responsible for man side inside out.
Has helped us if our 1 O goes against best available D running our own blitzes. Get to see full speed and timed blitzes that they know and donβt get off of scout card
#hogfbchat
A2: I love full slide protection with the back picking up the DE...if either DE is a dude, cool w/ locking an OT on that guy and having an RB replace...love practicing against air with only OL, then add a scout D in front of them, and finally going full blitz period
#hogfbchat
A3: our PAP is really just us not giving the ball to the RB. We go through our zone progression, except we donβt climb. We come off flat back and sell run. Uncovered dudes are looking for blitz. We donβt really drill PAP, other than repping the play. #hogfbchat
A3-I love selling out run but letting the OL know don't go 2nd level or chase guys. Other than that I want low hat off the ball & let's get those LB's to step up! #hogfbchat
A3: Depends on the series and play call but we utilize BOB and Sprint protection for PAP. Same drills are utilized. Team blitz pick up 11 on 8. Routes are run and thrown for timing vs live rush. #Hogfbchat
A3: We didnβt run any PAP protections this season. We would call the run play and tag the routes to the play. OL would block run action, QB would make give/pass read. We will be adding some PAP next year. #Hogfbchat
Q3: Still half man half slide lol. Difference is we put the line into what we call fit and sit. Low hat for 2-3 steps and then rise. Sell run first. Then work. We have bootlegs before, and PA off power #hogfbchat
A3- Our only PAP is Power Pass. Now I can tag any Solo or Duo route concept off of it. But we run power so much that it was more effective as far as influencing LB's that we just continue to run power. #hogfbchat
A3) depends. We will use them all depending on the defense. The only exception is we will fill the back and pull the guard if we have a team keying heavily. Best drill there is working that back to fill with good of level on the chutes #hogfbchat
A3
Waggle, waggle, and waggle drill.
Did I mention we run the crap out of waggle?
Set up cones to make sure QG gets depth. Flip hips and pin EMOLS #HogFbChat
Same half Slide protection but use a PUN technique for the OL. Have to fire out to sell the run. RB job is to get tackled...doesn't have to worry about blitz pickup. Hopefully his fake does the job he would normally do #Hogfbchat
A3: I guess Iβve been in front of the curve all night but refer to the last post. We still half slide, RB lines up opposite the man side and carries out his fake with eyes on the LB to the man side. If the LB fills he takes him, if not he releases into a route.
#hogfbchat
A3) I donβt drill PAP. I emphasize selling the run and presnapping our keys so we donβt get too out of control w/ the sell and forget who we have or go down field. #hogfbchat
A3: treat PAP as close to the run concept as possible. We may block down with OT and log with OG, based on scout. Mostly, treat just like the run it is linked to. #hogfbchat
A3: PAP we will down block BS gap. Either leave BS DE for naked or block him with RB. In either case we are selling run π― and settling to mirror and lock on. #hogfbchat
A3) Weβve used half slide, full slide, and of course pulling a guard for PA passes. Really like pulling a guard on PA to get the LBs to commit. #hogfbchat
We use the same pro and just add backfield action. We can make it 7 man protection, but then we eliminate the dual read for the RB. If we are a heavy pull team, we keep the pull and G and RB switch LB responsibilities-rb would cross back to insert where puller left #hogfbchat
A3: PAP protection - man front side, step & hinge backside. Work aggressive sets that mimic double teams & IZ footwork. Same drills we use for all pro & IZ. #hogfbchat
A3) Zone scheme with ends locked on end man the line, have back fake zone into backside B ( get tackled). Throw mostly quick game, Lots of walk the US with what ifs.....#Hogfbchat
A3. In play action we are selling the run action as best we can. Making sure not to go down field though. Get those 2nd and 3rd level defenders to come up and give us what we want. #HogFbChat
A3: any protection you can create where you pull a lineman is favored, drill jump set to mirror, I wouldnβt tell an official but I feel like as long as an OL is engaged there will not be an illegal down field call #hogfbchat
A2: half slide-I let my center make the direction call based on defensive alignment. RB fits opposite A/B. I donβt spend a lot of time on blitz pick-up. We focus more on our pass sets. #HogFbChat
A3. Zone is married to full slide, power is married to half slide away from power. Keeps it simple. Mostly done in skelly and team. RB has a arrow flat if LB bails in half slide #Hogfbchat
Great Chat about Pass Pro. I always love seeing the long list from our Oline coach about every blitz and twist possible!
It is just amazing. #hogfbchat
A3: Try and do our best to keep schemes the same. Whether that is the pass pro scheme the same with a jump-type set, or the run scheme accurate with pullers, just not heading to 2nd level/changing puller path to fit QB setup point. #hogfbchat
A3: PAP is exactly like regular protection except we come off like run for two steps then we sit down on them. Kinda like aggressive jump sets.
#hogfbchat
A3: guards and center are run action and our tackles will take a normal pass set on certain PAP, which we discuss during insert sessions. Run combo calls are still made to mess with the DL #hogfbchat
A2: We make these every week with color coding an make the kids keep it on their phones. Now they know and knowing is half the battle with any protection.
#HogFbChat
A3: absolutely love play action. We run a true naked boot with all linemen step to play side. we also have a front side run steps with backside step and hinge. And throw in a power pass look and counter pass look up front and were set. #Hogfbchat
A3: we treat it like IZ, we will full slide/ lock the backside of the protection. Stressing to my guys low hat for 3 hard steps then set up. If your lost in space look for work. This is something I got to do a better job of drilling with my guys. #Hogfbchat
Noticing a theme tonight... A3) PAP needs to mimic the run game youβre passing off of, so our rules/gap should be similar. Minimum of 3 hard steps to our gap, then settle in party position (not a typo). We judge how good it is on if we get LBs in their fits. #hogfbchat
A2 PT. 2: I work pass pro. just like I do IZ boards, I want my OL going forward while maintaining inside leverage. Hate to give ground on pass protection. #hogfbchat
A3. We use to use a 1/2 slide for our inside zone, with back inserting or full slide for our stretch play, but we really only RPO now, so we are full run block. #hogfbchat
A3. In play action we are selling the run action as best we can. Making sure not to go down field though. Get those 2nd and 3rd level defenders to come up and give us what we want. #HogFbChat
A3: I work a βfire and fadeβ technique with our guys. Theyβve gotta fire out as if weβre running the ball with their first two steps and then fade back once contact is initiated #HogFbChat
A3: If possible is still really like to stick with my first two answers π. But I have done multiple things, βran the playβ, half slide half man with low hats and a ball fake, done a full slide-down gap protection with back fitting to give a power look. See thread #Hogfbchat
A3: Flame/ Fire pro. Roger/ Louie rules except you fire off the ball. Tag POP to pull A guard. Looks like power but we donβt get down field. Run block! #HogFbChat
A3: On Boot/Waggle we pull guards. Sometimes it's both sometimes it's just PSG it all depends on the D. On Belly/Blast we sometimes cross block PS to give a convincing fake - this depends on personnel and if we can't get it done we are aggressive man on man. #hogfbchat
FULL SLIDE #hogfbchat
H back takes 1st man outside PS tackle.
OL protect gap away keeping shoulders square and "passing off" stunts/twists
RB run fakes then looks for work inside/out
We exclusively used halfslide this season because of limited practice time due to most lineman playing both sides of the ball. Best drills were covering line twists on the man side and practicing bumps. Then coming together w/ RBs and running Blitz Pickup vs. cards #Hogfbchat
A3: continued, I. Our power pass G still pulls, and helps on the end man. In counter pass, G pulls and seals end, tackle shows pull, and blocks DT on his side. #Hogfbchat
A3: this is a run play and we will push the limit of what "illegal man downfield" means lol. In reality, we know we're throwing, drill is the same as the run, but we go 3 hard steps and anchor. Usually expect a quick throw, but if we must stay locked, stay on your path #Hogfbchat
A3: will either use aggressive Half-slide with back faking across. Or we will man the PS, C blocks BS A to BS B. BSG is pulling to FS C-D, and BST will pick&hinge. All hats are still low and aggressive. #hogfbchat
A3: Lately Iβm liking naked boot w/ pin variations to help move the pocket, extend the timeline & still give the QB ability to read full field. #Hogfbchat
A3 conβt: work pull to mirror letting the puller know not to work past last OL to help create the pocket edge, I believe from gun the protection has to compliment your Qb run game so that the cross action of the RB and pulling guard is natural #hogfbchat
I got lucky and βfoundβ LB right around the time I was really studying biomechanics HARD (that and programming). Really dive in. Itβs a tremendous investment that will aid more than just OL play. These are some of the books I bought around that time. #hogfbchat

@Trench_CoachJJ, @Velocity_LS, @OLPerformance
A3: we need to get better in PAP. We named some PAP so they kids knew what to do but we have built the offense so I can tag fake to any run play and add a concept or combo afterwards and our skills guys know what to do. We RPO rather tha PAP #Hogfbchat
A3: I think the best PAP protection is to utilize our run scheme blocking and ensure our OL knows to keep their hats low, but not go downfield...if we are a big iso team, then we'd build a quick PAP off of iso, and build in a call to let them know to stay 1st level
#hogfbchat
A3 (cont.): Also done gap away with back making it look like a split zone action. Nothing like stretch/OZ action with a push crack or what we called a cargo route on the outside. Almost stealing. #hogfbchat
A3: best PAP protection is naked off stretch...donβt need to work anything special for OL, they literally turn and run, blocking first defender that shows playside. Depending on formation may need to work sniffer getting to flats over top of EMOLS #hogfbchat
A3 cont: We started sucker pulling our Gs on our buck sweep waggle and we loved it. Just have to watch backside DE and run the boot when you recognize him falling asleep #HogFbChat
A1: 5 man pro I use half slide-QB understands where OL is working and knows he is responsible for the 6th defender. Use the yard lines to work spacing and angles. Gives kids landmarks work knee to crotch relationship spend time focusing on OL eyes and aiming point. #HogFbChat
A3. We half slide or full slide. #hogfbchat I always want to pull guards in PAP but every year chicken out. Just not sure how to pick up edge blitzer backside if you pull the guard to the frontside.
A3: Depends on the PA. Esp. on naked, I always preferred aggressive, run-block action. I'll never forget a Chi Bears coach I heard who talked about how LBs HEAR pass v. run just as much as they see it. Changed my approach on PAP.
#hogfbchat
A3 conβt: also believethe mesh between Qb and RB doesnβt have to be perfect from gun as long Qb is willing to change his shoulder level on the mesh #hogfbchat
Coach Poltrock, Reagan HS Milwaukee, OC of the Power T. We were 13/28 passing. Averaged 11.6 yards/attempt. 7 teams threw the ball less times than we did in the state of Wisconsin last season. Trap. Trap is my answer for everything tonight. Goodnight. #hogfbchat
A3: Itβs one of our RPO calls so our kids just know based off the call their blocking IZ but they have to get their hands inside on contact because the DL is about to try to get off if he ever figures out the QB still has the ball. They usually donβt though π.
#Hogfbchat
A4: will use RB to help edge. Use wide zone rules. Will reach block if covered. If uncovered and no contact after 3 steps will hinge back for garbage. #hogfbchat
A4) Key the knee of the next down lineman, after 2 steps and no gap threat slow down and set an anchor point. Backside tackle should just set normal on DE because no way in high school is he stepping down/ hinging and getting to screaming backside DE #hogfbchat
A4-Gate protection!!! Get movement on the front side & have BST & BSG getting depth to reach the Center. Make the DL chase the QB on a longer path #hogfbchat
A4: Turnback protection! Fit the back off the edge. Still need to run through, play Recog. Through our assignments. We have set up cones to give landmarks... but live reps or reps on scout have worked best. #Hogfbchat
Q3: What is you PAP Protection? What drills do you utilize? A3: we block the run scheme called and RB sells the fake if it's deeper a stay call will be given with run play for pulling guard to stay 1st level we do seperate play calls for skill QB and line. #hogfbchat
We call our sprint out Ricky/Lucy we go full slide to left or right and if we are two back they both go to the call side. One back he goes to the call side #hogfbchat
A1 playside tackle Anchors has to step to hook the rest of the line backpedaling and throws down the line. No free runners past them. I like it bc you donβt have to get a big shot on anyone as long as the QB gets it out. #hogfbchat
A4) Full sprint out, OL trying to hook next man. Work on QB getting depth and separation with first 3 steps to avoid DE, then eyes up on 3rd step looking at his reads. Drill this daily!!! #Hogfbchat
A4: I like either everybody reaching hard outside number on the frontside with gap hinges on the backside or everyone gap hinge with the RB sealing the edge, you just have to be a competitor at the RB spot to make that one go, but itβs my favorite #hogfbchat
A3: have had a lot of success gapping with o line and chipping unblocked DE with a FB before he gets into route concept.
RG/LG should be stepping and protecting their left gap but you get the idea
#hogfbchat
A3: our PAP is DESIGNED to maintain as much integrity to what the run-action would be, ie. if guards pull in rings, then they pull in PAP, etc. Now whether that actually happens... #hogfbchat
Q4: Favorite sprint out protection is where PST, PSG and center reach PS gap. BSG and BST: Waterfall (3 steps to reach then turn and backpedal to keep BS pressure off QB. #hogfbchat
A4: Rodeo/ Lasso. Sell OZ. Back action takes him to FS tackles hip. BST is gap hinge. Nothing fancy...same feet, hips, hands, and hats as OZ. Can pull uncovered if odd front. #HogFbChat
A4: PS slides working to outside shoulder, BS "gates" working on staying hip to hip protecting inside threat to out. Butts need to work towards QB as he sprints out. #hogfbchat
A4: hook protection. If you have someone in your playside gap you take them and hook them. If no one is there, hinge back and look back side. We rep on air, we rep half man, we rep stunt and blitz pick up. RB also fills play side. #hogfbchat
A4: sprint out we run step punch and hinge. Butt to call side. Only take hinge side defenders. To drill we do a lot of work on air. That way guys really understand movement first. #hogfbchat
A4. We go man to the sprint out side with the back helping to set the edge, back side we waterfall to form a L, really only drill this with our blitz period when I have the RB's
#hogfbchat
A4) This year we committed to working on the waterfall technique on our full reach sprint out & we ended up really liking it. Iβve tweeted about this before but I can talk more in depth if ppl have questions #hogfbchathttps://t.co/FSYNegqldZ
I've been thinking of doing something like marrying half-slide pass pro philosophy with sprint out. So for example, if we sprint rt all covered OL will full reach but first uncovered guy starts turnback protection. Has anyone done something like this?

A4: Reach and fall back. Covered man reaches, Uncovered man reach steps playside and if there is no threat to his gap, falls backs to check backside. #hogfbchat
A4: playside outside zone footwork, drill as we do for OZ, bucket step & hinge backside. Again, mirror as many concepts as we can to work on skills during limited practice time. #hogfbchat
A4: Our sprint out scheme is based off of outside zone without climbing to the second level. Everyone is trying to reach and over take. We do allow our backside tackle away from the sprint out to βgap-hinge.β Gap 1st, then hinge back on the DE or OLB if gap is empty.
#hogfbchat
A4. We call it roll. Playside blocks a gap over with the RB helping to set the edge. Backside of the line hinges. Our protection call is east/west for right or left. #HogFbChat
A4) Reach on the playside, waterfall on the backside. Breaking into segments is key for drill. Work reaching defenders that are readers, penetrators, stunts and blitzes. Then work same thing for the waterfall guys. All are responsible for PS Gap. #hogfbchat
A4: Gate/Turnback. BST & BSG create depth, C step and hinge. PSG & PST step like its OZ. Has given ability to also run QB sweep with route attached. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4: Outside Zone/Toss steps just donβt go down field!! Reach, reach, reach!! Repping it for me typically is more focused on accounting for edge pressure with a crack and coaching the Q.
A4:we treat it like sweep, trying to block the gap over. Backside Guard and Tackle are protecting the inside gap. PST is working to hook the DE. We will work the OL in the advantage, he has the angle. then work him at the disadvantage. The DL has beaten him across face #Hogfbchat
A4. Stop sprint out side gap and fall back if uncovered (turns into half turn protection) will backpedal the backside tackle to get depth to widen the edge for the chase DE. Dont overcoach it though. Easiest protection if your QB commits to running hard on the action. #Hogfbchat
A4 Cont - My drill is sending blitz at it. Making sure we reach the front-side 3 and the guys come all the way around the BST. Try and confuse them. #hogfbchat
Agreed coach. Not a big sprint out guy but used it with my previous QB more. Reach and have rb help set the edge. We told reaching linemen "feet, hands, hat, feet" a bad reach block still gives you a chance if your feet are running #Hogfbchat
A4: we cut the end with the RB and gap back. If a team brings consistent edge pressure we can change to tackle reaching the end and back helping to edge pressure as in game adjustment. I never had great success with tackles reaching ends as they read full flow to them #hogfbchat
A4: we reach the rollout side gap and the backside steps to rollout side and hinges if no threat. We ask a lot of one PST because we rarely have any back help on the edge. QB has to recognize if he needs to slow his rollout a bit when the DE canβt be reached #HogFbChat
A4) Outside zone/Stretch principles. If thereβs no immediate threat to the BS B-gap the BS OT hinges. Back helps set the edge playsideβ¦can have the option to turn back late for trash. #hogfbchat
A4: man the PS on BS pick and hinge (getting to adjacent OL before hinging) making Def have to go around rather allowing under, RB cleaning up PS edge pressure either starting on play side or meshing from backside to play side edge, aiming points are essential #hogfbchat
A4: we have been a shuffle turn back team. Two steps to the call and hinge backside (backside gap responsible). Halfway through the season we locked on our frontside OL since we had smaller RBs going against DEs. #hogfbchat
A4: Depends on the playside endβs ability to kill our QB or not. If heβs a stud we block it like stretch and spin out the BST for backside wide 9 or Corner blitz if not weβre down on playside hinge on backside let RB seal the playside edge.
#HogFbChat
A4: reach on the play side and hinge on the back. Work on air some, but when we go team, we send a lot of pressure. RB covers play side edge #hogfbchat
A4: Used full reach forever but struggled getting QB downhill.Switched to turn back protection this year with RB taking wider course enticing DE to come inside and then sealing. Looking to tweak a bit this offseason.
#hogfbchat
That's a wrap Coaches! Thank you all again for being here and participating in the best Monday night activity there is! The #hogfbchat greatly appreciates your support and participation! #AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo#hogfbchat
A4 conβt: if naked the PST has to be willing to take B gap threat and sell hard when no threat, other OL using zone rules without climbing when not engaged #hogfbchat
A4: slice and sprite. Outside zone steps, back helps on ps edge/option to hit flat some plays. Waterfall on backside. Repped furing pass pro
#Hogfbchat
Q4: What is your favorite Sprintout protection? What drills do you use? A4: check playside gap to hinge with back setting the edge. If your Gap is threatened stay on. backside hinge to depth. Work it in blitz pick up or group. #hogfbchat
A4: Frontside including the center reach block like stretch. Backside scoop check and hinge (If you reach someone within your first 3 steps, work your hips around them, if not hinge and pickup first threat). #hogfbchat
If anybody has questions or topics that they would like discussed on the next #hogfbchat, PLEASE make sure to DM myself or @CoachDingus with those ideas and we will get them on an upcoming #hogfbchat
A4: frontside speed reach outside armpit of near defender. Backside must close frontside gap before hinging. For drills we just rep it over and over until we get the spacing down. Teach them to never turn back until their frontside gap is clear. Force defender away. #HogFbChat
A4: I worked with an OC that would work zone opposite and set the edge with the back. Ex: rolling right the Oline would run mid zone left and the back would seal the edge right. It's something you can carry against VERY discipline teams but not rely on #Hogfbchat
#hogfbchat I really hope we can get a big turnout for this #OLBrotherhood event! I know myself & @Warhogs56 will be going to our local VFW. But anything helps! HUGE thank you to @CoachShiffman for allowing me to use the #hogfbchat platform! Lets spread the word and be the change!
#hogfbchat is brought to you by @GuardianCaps - padded helmet covers for practice. Great for linemen, good for others because IT STARTS UP FRONT.

A4: I utilize the same 6 man full slide technique except I have the RB go frontside...he is taught to imitate outside zone track and as he presses the line, if edge secured, check backside gaps for help
#hogfbchat
Catch to me seems so final, like a stoppage, I understand the principle for sure, but is it possible to be #DriveSlide? Feels like something Tony Perkis would endorse. #hogfbchat

A3: Was at Las Vegas #Glazier and heard Noel Mazzone say they are adding a check to their RPOs for QB to turn the RPO into a true play action. Essentially a one-word line call tells OL not to go downfield. #Hogfbchat
Already have guys from CA, AZ, AK, IL, GA, & @CoachSCue (Coached a year of OL in Pop Warner) donating his time while heβs on vacation in Rome!
It would be special if we got at least one Coach/Org/Team from each state! Can say itβs Country Wide!
