#PSCchat Archive
"The purpose of #PSCchat (Principal-School Counselor chat) is to focus on the Principal-School Counselor relationship and the importance that relationship has on meeting the needs of all students. There are so many ways that principals can effectively utilize school counselors in their buildings. #PSCchat gives us the opportunity to learn those ways through collaboration. #PSCchat is not limited to only principals and school counselors, we welcome the participation of all educators and value all insight. #PSCchat meets every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at 8:30pm EST." --Nicole DiSilvestro (co-moderator)

A1) Always great to have someone to bounce ideas off and get a new perspective from
A1 - Awesome when you can bounce ideas/questions off & get back quality insight!
Thank you! :) tough first question! Cons?!
A1: watching an educator develop their own style and honoring it... Is amazing! The challenge... When philosophies don't jive
. thanks, Rich. I always enjoy are discussions & learning from each other.
A1: Build prof relationships; Con Sense of hierarchy can come into play
Hello everyone! My name is Jessica Wright and I am a middle school counseling intern. I am tweeting from central jersey.

Hello everyone! My name is Jessica Wright and I am a middle school counseling intern. I am tweeting from central jersey.
A1) I have a mentor from another school, so it helps to get insight from outside of my own bubble
A1 For me: struggle to balance my own business goals, with the process of nurturing young interns. It's always a growing exp.
A1 As a mentee I was lucky to work with one of the best Elementary SC I have ever met! able to take challenges in a safe place.
. Thanks for joining us tonight, Jessica. Glad you're joining the discussion tonight.
I can see how that may also be a con
Welcome Marc! Thanks for joining us tonight! https://t.co/YUQJVmmfFI

Hey, Marc here. Technology Specialist in Georgia.
Creating environment/building of sharing helps mentor/mentee relationships! Collaboration/modeling opportunities key.
Fresh perspective is always nice ! and I always bounce ideas back & forth! https://t.co/R56q2mVbxe
A1) I have a mentor from another school, so it helps to get insight from outside of my own bubble
Evan Robb Principal from VA- Happy to be here!
definitely. Some things are applicable in my school and I also don't see her often
Agree, that is sometimes tough Peter. Time management is important! https://t.co/ISlS0s13iK
A1 For me: struggle to balance my own business goals, with the process of nurturing young interns. It's always a growing exp.
Agree! I think mentors benefit from this and also helps them to reflect on their own practice as educators
A1: Pro's you get to build that relationship, collaborate, see and hear through another set of eyes
Similar to when teachers have mentors in different grade level than themselves. Not always applicable
. gr8 point, Sarahi. Respect, collaboration, & learning from each other make for a worthwhile experience for both.
Kerri Waller- art teacher. I'm mostly lurking.
Hi! Special education teacher from central nj!
A1 once certified SC do not have any Mentors, I was lucky to have my P guide me through district procedures and questions
Welcome to tonight Evan! Happy to have your insight! https://t.co/JBPtXOiIgT
Evan Robb Principal from VA- Happy to be here!
Welcome to tonight Evan! Happy to have your insight! https://t.co/JBPtXOiIgT
Evan Robb Principal from VA- Happy to be here!
. I agree, Brittanie & think this is key. Someone outside building & district if possible prevents edu in-breeding.
A1: Couldn't have asked for a better mentor! Able to see what her style was and also build my own.
. anything you can share with how you balance this, Peter?
A1
Managing time is hard- counselors should be able work with students- not coordinating testing
A1: There is lack of organization with the mentor program. I had general education teacher in kindergarten! While I teach sped 3-5
A1-Don't have formal mentor so have to look for "informal" one for reflection, best practice, balance
Q2: How has your experiences as a mentor or mentee influenced your own practice?
A1:collaboration is wonderful.
Q3: Reflecting on the beginning of your career, what advice can you share to others who are new to education?
I agree. 1st years need as much support as possible. Better match-ups would equal better results
. always important to get another perspective. Helps both mentor & mentee grow.
A2: Opened my eyes to different perspectives
. thanks for lurking tonight, Kerri, but don't be afraid to jump right in!
A2: it made me find weak points in my own instruction and learn how to strengthen them.
A2 The meta-cognitive element of mentoring always improves our craft
A2 - Ironically, I have learned as much of what NOT to do as what TO do over the years.
A2 - Great to be around/work with a lot of admin./T. Take the good from all & blend it to your style
A3: You will make mistakes & it will be ok
I had a great experience w/ my mentor because she was an ESL/BIL teacher.
. I'm sure was very helpful w/these Qs!
A2) It has helped me feel more confident when going against the grain at my school since my mentor is elsewhere.
Agree, Evan. They have so much to do for students. https://t.co/N1PnHNEkvd
A1
Managing time is hard- counselors should be able work with students- not coordinating testing
A3: pick your battles and don't say yes to everything. Over plan but be ready to go off track if a teachable moment occurs.
Q3: Conference with colleagues in all grade levels. There is no need to strive for perfection. We all make mistakes!
Go hard every day, no excuses. Only worry about the things you can change, never dwell on the things you can't.
I think that's a great point! Most times the experiences teach perspective & practice on what not to do https://t.co/bwWZQSphGg
A2 - Ironically, I have learned as much of what NOT to do as what TO do over the years.
More appropriate alignment can be helpful. Agree, Stephanie. https://t.co/RCdIhGfUSP
A1: There is lack of organization with the mentor program. I had general education teacher in kindergarten! While I teach sped 3-5
I agree. Can't do it all no matter how much you want to.
is a great place to look, Desiree. https://t.co/hz1qAFUOmG
A1-Don't have formal mentor so have to look for "informal" one for reflection, best practice, balance
A2-helps me recognize no matter how much experience we have, we ALL need to reflect, need support & sometimes need a cheerleader
A3 - There is no right way. Figure out what works for you & meet the students where they are at. Mistakes happen grow from them
A3: you can never control your students' reactions, but you can always control your own
A2. Made me the counselor who I am today, she helped me build confidence and gave me opportunity to take lead on my own "projects"
Great point. So important. Still working on this everyday! https://t.co/PN5uEx1X5h
Go hard every day, no excuses. Only worry about the things you can change, never dwell on the things you can't.
A3) Ask more questions. Advocate for yourself and your Ss
A2: Do not have a mentor now so going back and thinking about what they may have done when a situation occurs is helping
Lost wifi. Back. It helps to not let one overshadow other. Encouraging/supporting their talents in pursuit of my goals.
Sounds like it was a beneficial experience for you. https://t.co/oNtyHetIyU
A2: it made me find weak points in my own instruction and learn how to strengthen them.
A3 We have control of our words and actions- that is a great lesson to teach to students!
Another key benefit of the mentor/mentee experience. Great point, Marc. https://t.co/XCq15zS6Ns
A2 - Ironically, I have learned as much of what NOT to do as what TO do over the years.
A3 learn everything and anything they have to offer. just go for it and don't hesitate if they ask you to try something
Agreed So much great stuff on
. thanks for jumping in tonight, Josh.
. when we're all pressed for time, reflection often falls off. I think this is a mistake too many of us make. Schedule it.
Seek others' opinions just as that, Evaluate, Do what is best for you
Agree! Mentors have the opportunity to assist and also improve their own professional competency https://t.co/jhQg8vxj0A
A2-helps me recognize no matter how much experience we have, we ALL need to reflect, need support & sometimes need a cheerleader
I think mentoring is a lot like raising kids- unconditional acceptance for thoughts, ideas, feelings, but you still have to lead.
A3-Understand that mistakes will happen & are part of growth. When you know better, do better.
Great advice!! Take charge. Most often instinct plays the biggest role. One of your stregnths!! https://t.co/JG9JENiaTP
A3 learn everything and anything they have to offer. just go for it and don't hesitate if they ask you to try something
Q3 never feel that you need to reinvent the wheel or feel pressured to answer something you are not sure of Use your peers for help
A1: I am lucky to have as a mentor. Her counseling style is impeccable and our collaboration makes us a great team!
joining late: A3 = ask lots of questions, read, observe, soak in as much as you can and then make it your own
A3. Also you will never stop learning, the best thing about our field is there is always something new that happens

joining late: A3 = ask lots of questions, read, observe, soak in as much as you can and then make it your own
you are so right! is awesome at helping you see what your potential is. Take it all in!
YES! You shouldn't be in education if you don't want to be a life long learner.
So true! Everyday there is a new challenge! Is what makes teaching exciting! https://t.co/TYRPXX5AFn
A3. Also you will never stop learning, the best thing about our field is there is always something new that happens
