A1 Research shows that students should experience a ratio of 5 positives for 1 negative in ALL locations of school. I also believe teachers have the power to model positive interactions among other staff members. Kids are always watching! #NoVAedchat

Check out this study - simply greeting students at the door increases engagement and reduces disruption! Finding more instructional time is magical! #NoVAedchat
    • YoukiTerada Sep 11 @ 6:54 PM EDT
A new study finds that greeting students at the door increases engagement by 20%, reduces disruptions by 9% -- effectively adding 1 hour of learning per day. My latest article on @edutopia https://t.co/ht527kM5nP
  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1.2- in a language classroom students have to be comfortable taking a risk and making mistakes. If you donā€™t have that relationship base, the outcomes wonā€™t be there. #NoVAedchat
  • witmanedu Sep 12 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: One of the things Iā€™m focusing on this year is building a rapport with students who have ā€œtoo much (tech knowledge) for their own goodā€ Building relationships is essential to making sure they donā€™t head down the wrong path with that knowledge. #NoVAedchat
  • techiesuzie Sep 12 @ 8:11 PM EDT

  • AbramsTank95 Sep 12 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 - I believe positive relationships equate to solid trust foundations. Ts & Ss who trust one another tend to allow deep conversations & feedback which can stimulate broader perspectives and deeper learning. I believe negativity stimulates drama for everyone. #novaedchat
  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Sep 12 @ 8:13 PM EDT

  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2.1: we have conversations in the target language at the start of each class. The first step is 30 seconds to go around and introduce and call each other by name. #NoVAedchat
  • htrude07 Sep 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: Taking the time to have conversations with each student and showing them that I am genuinely interested in what they have to say. #NoVAedchat
  • MrsMoore_HMS Sep 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Positive Relationships have BIG impacts in classrooms and schools. Positive relationships mean Iā€™m taking walks with students to talk about issues before they become problems and they are able to navigate them without making choices that end in consequences. #NovaEdChat
  • jcjITRT51 Sep 12 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A1: Having positive relationships with Ss allows you to connect with them, which in turn helps you to motivate them and help them succeed. The same goes with building that TEAM with the Ts and staff in your building. #novaedchat
  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2.2: Iā€™ve got 165 kids this year. Weā€™re in week 3 and Iā€™ve just about got all the names! Iā€™ve warned them that Iā€™ll be over using names and making LOTS of eye contact these first weeks until I get everyone! #NoVAedchat

  • techiesuzie Sep 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: I LOVE interactive questionnaires. Donā€™t just ask the questions -- respond to students and relate to what they're telling you. They took time to let you know a bit about themselves. Also, @FlipGrid has been a game changer. #novaedchat
  • margaretfbarnes Sep 12 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Positive relationships -> greater sense of belonging -> higher engagement -> increased success and progress #NoVAedchat
  • MrsJYears Sep 12 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: Being a resource teacher, whenever I begin a small group lesson, I always begin with a mini-morning meeting and I have the students greet one another. I was surprised to find that my students didnā€™t know each otherā€™s names! Community building for the win! #NoVAedChat šŸ‘Æā€ā™€ļø
  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Sep 12 @ 8:21 PM EDT
I love how some administrators and Ts seize every opportunity to learn more about students' stories. I listened to an AP talk to a S today, truly wanting to know how she can help him get to school on time. Such a different approach than solely punishment #NoVAedchat

A2: I've tried to create a happy hour on the first Friday of the month (PayDay) to help build that relationship at my previous school. Tried it at my current school to no takers. Now I just try to have conversations with people to try and find interests, etc. #novaedchat
  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Sep 12 @ 8:23 PM EDT
I love that @SamanthaBaranyk used to do a modified morning meeting with her HS students - an opportunity to share. Everyone talked. They learned all about each other. It can be done in HS too! #NoVAedchat
  • AbramsTank95 Sep 12 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2 - Use your 2 ears and close your 1 mouth is a great rule of thumb. Listening, focusing and processing what people say is essential to building positive relationships. #novaedchat
  • techiesuzie Sep 12 @ 8:23 PM EDT

Q3: What challenges have you faced in developing relationships in your classroom? #NoVAedChat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Sep 12 @ 8:25 PM EDT

Many of the conversations have led to an idea of how I can help implement something in their classrooms. #novaedchat

A3: It takes creativity to maintain originality. When getting to know others you have to really care; it needs to feel genuine. An ice breaker without the desire to listen and learn is worthless. #novaedchat
  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:27 PM EDT
CAN you get to all of them? There will always be varied levels I think. I feel like I try really hard and have the best intentions but there really is only so much of me to go around. #NoVaEdChat

A3: Teaching in a high school, it can be a struggle to get to know others outside of your department. I am now making an effort as PBIS chair to get to know the Ts in my building. #NoVAedchat
  • DR_ESOL Sep 12 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A2: always asking about themselves, always having materials that represent them, getting their feedback #novaedchat
  • jcjITRT51 Sep 12 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A2a: I've found building relationships with Ss in the classroom is easier. Taking the time to listen to the Ss, greating them at the door each morning, greeting them at the door at the end of the day are all keys. #novaedchat
  • DR_ESOL Sep 12 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A1: positive interactions help student construct positive self-identify! If we show we value them, they will value themselves #selfidentify #novaedchat
  • MrsGraceChoi Sep 12 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A2 Big responsive classroom lover over here! I also love getting know families and having them tell me about their kiddo. We just had some listening conferences which are opportunities for me to listen as parents share about their child. #NoVAedchat
  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Sep 12 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Having materials in which students can see themselves reflected is so important. And hasn't been the case for a lot of our students. Thank you for pointing this out!! #NoVAedchat

Wonderful strategy! As adults and as professionals, we do this all the time. You setup a wonderful foundation for networking which will lead to new opportunities. This activity also builds student confidence when speaking in public. #novaedchat

  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: Iā€™m going to echo @techinteachingā€™s sentiments. 31-35 kids per class, 90 minutes. I know that Iā€™m making connections and the kids are too but itā€™s just soooo much to fit in. I wish I could wave my magic class size wand! #NoVAedchat

  • jcjITRT51 Sep 12 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3: Challenges I have faced have mostly been with Ts and staff. Being an ITRT they see me as that "tech guy" and not as an instructional resource. I've been trying to make that happen more, but it is a slow process. #novaedchat
  • MrsJYears Sep 12 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A3 Challenges when trying to build relationships? Trying to build relationships with all, even the ones who quietly fly under the radar. Secret about me: I was that kid who flew under the radar, never making trouble, and I rarely got attention from the teacher #NoVAedChat
  • MrsMoore_HMS Sep 12 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A3: Challenges are plenty. How do I have strong relationships with all my students? How do I ensure Iā€™m equitable in my time spent with different students listening. When your number of students exponentially grow when you are outside of the classroom. #NoVaEdChat
  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:33 PM EDT
I started spending planning time in other departmentā€™s workrooms! Also, ask around and see who is doing cool stuff in their classes, ask to observe! I end up spending about 15 minutes of each planing just walking the building and networking. SO WORTH IT! #NoVaEdChat

#NoVAEdChat I think all relationships matter in a school. Strong relationships among staff can make or break a school: teachers, custodians, front office, counselors, administrators, cafeteria, IAs, security, coaches. Relationships with parents are critical too.
  • ProfeTravis Sep 12 @ 8:48 PM EDT

#NoVAEdChat A5: a key to relationships is authenticity. Be real about who you are, and how you care and interact. Own your mistakes.

A6: I'm going to work hard to ask people things about themselves (I struggle with this). #CloseTheComputer #Relationships #NoVAedChat

A3 Some Ss open up so easily - others take an entire school year to trust you. Itā€™s so hard to keep pushing and trying when reciprocation doesnā€™t come. While difficult, I have found that these are the most worthwhile relationships to work for! #NoVAedchat

I think it can be challenging when the to-do list is long and the tasks keep coming. But people first! #NoVAedchat

Item 5 from your list is critical. If you've used item #2 from your list, you should recognize when some "thing" is bothering your student. It may be how they respond to you or their manners. Recognize, approach, speak and listen. #novaedchat

A6: One strategy I have been trying with the Ts and staff this year seems silly but, its one I used with my Ss. I have been trying to stop and just listen. Then before I respond breathe twice and then answer. I'll tell you in a few months if it truly works. #novaedchat
