Collaborating on a group project, cross curricular (English and History) to create our own society- remember it for both positive and negative reasons! HA! #INeLearn#memorableclass
Steve in Valpo. Probably in & out tonight. Working on basketball prep & my youngest is trying to get out of math homework by inviting me to the Y with him. But hard t pass up a @jmattmiller chat, right? #inelearn
R1: my HS chem class. Teacher had safety shield up. Put some K (potassium) in water. It popped and cracked, sparked, then exploded. Cracked the safety glass. #INeLearn
R1: One of my most memorable classes as a student was learning about hispanic cuisine in Spanish class ... then making quesadillas and eating them! #inelearn
A1: There are so many! Most recently, my memorable course was actually my first course in the @IU_IST program, taught by @pvanleusen. It was what made me get into instructional design. #inelearn
A1: My economics class as a senior! My teacher was so intentional about making sure we learned economics beyond a textbook! I still attempt to be a fraction of the teacher he was! #INeLearn
R1 9th grade World Studies. We did a distance learning project w/ Disney's school. Then we flew there to celebrate the end and meet our digital friends. This was 1997 so pretty tech-advanced for the time! #INeLearn
#INeLearn A1 Mr. Shepherd’s US Government class at Frankfort High School. Participate in a lot of simulation to expose us to real life government situations. Never will forget the candidate simulation where commercials had to be filmed.
R1: In Spanish class my teachers fixed tons of food and had it on a buffet table but you could only get the food if you said it in Spanish. 😂 And we had to watch Que Pasa USA soap opera and translate it #inelearn 😎👩🏻💻❤️
A1: A sound production class in high school. We got to use professional studio equipment to make beats, record vocals, and learn how to master audio. Extremely fun and engaging. #INeLearn
Q1: Mine was my trig class. I loved the subject and I also loved how the teacher connected with us and took the time to build relationships with us. #INeLearn
I had a chemistry teacher in high school who would use an alternate personality known as Gustav to teach special lessons. The only difference between him and Gustav was a hat. Simple, but hilarious (and memorable). #inelearn
R1: My 6th grade ELA class. My teacher changed my life when she introduced me to a book that had just come out and she thought I would like...Harry Potter and the The Sorcerer's Stone. #INeLearn
We would look at stocks & how the political climate at the time influenced them. He taught us about supply and demand & how it all connected to the GDP! I mean, he went out of his way for us to know these things before we left high school! #INeLearn
A1: Mrs. Sheets in 6th grade. We dissected sharks, researched Greek Mythology, and had a medieval fair. So many wonderful memories. She was an inspiration! #INeLearn
R1: the other one was my Athletic Training class in HS. The teacher who shall rename nameless may or may not have fallen asleep while discussing muscles with us. He was still talking but not making sense. #INeLearn
R1: Physics 3-4, sr year, we all took a 2nd year of physics regardless of college plans because we loved Mr. Farley. Looked exactly like Yoda, could draw a perfect circle, taught the class like a college course, put Game 1 of the 1984 NLCS (Cubs/SD) on the radio for us. #inelearn
R2: Absolutely- if Ts speak to the hearts and emotions of their Ss, they build trust->relationships->authentic learning->challenge and push students to be their best #INeLearn
R2 YES! Today we learned an uber boring concept (my opinion), but we made it fun by acting it out like football players on a field. The Ss were SO into it, my 4th period even clapped at the end. #littlethings#INeLearn
R2: Absolutely important to make connections and engage students. It’s not about giving a test and repeating the content. It’s about creating that passion. Unfortunately, I feel that a lot of classes and schools have lost this aspect. #INeLearn
A2: Absolutely- because w/out having those relationships formed, kids won't be as engaged as they could be! Kids don't learn from adults they don't like. We need to make the lessons RELEVANT & MEANINGFUL TO THEM! #INeLearn
A2: Absolutely this is the shift from compliance to engagement to empowerment. When hearts and emotions are considered deeper more personalized learned can be experienced. #INeLearn
A2: Absolutely. Facts are sterile. Bring in emotion, empathy, and understanding and students will be able to grasp the impact of those facts and remember them. We remember what we feel! Make connections! #INeLearn
A2: Absolutely! The more students are engaged and know you care, the more they will want to learn from you. It’s so important to build those relationships with students. #INeLearn
By enlarge the ability to pick the ways I showcase my understandings. My two teachers also provided my first ever experience with an oral assessment where they picked questions ask and allowed Ss to select topics for them to choose from to ask. #INeLearn
R2: I think that the emphasis on standardized tests have created this lack of connection and ability to show passion. It goes to what is the end goal of your class and content. #INeLearn
R2: 1000% it is important to engaged Ss hearts and emotions. Those are the lessons that we (this Twitter chat) remember. We know as Ts that Ss make connections to content when we can engage their hearts! #INeLearn
Hey there - John Kline from WeVideo for Schools. Not in the classroom anymore (except when I am!). IU grad from days gone by. Felling "Back Home Again..." 🎶 #INeLearn
R2: I've always taught math for kids who don't like math and don't like school. Engaging my kids is sometimes all I got. Last year a student told me a previous year teacher in another school called her stupid (in class!). She still stops by my room this year to say hi. #inelearn
R2: I believe it is so important to go beyond the facts and engage their hearts! We need to give them a why! Why should they care? Pull them in and connect with them! Give them an opportunity to take ownership of their educational journey. #INeLearn
#INeLearn A2 Yes. Make authentic learning come alive and students will be engaged. The opportunity fit for students to learn and interact with Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20 was something they will never forget. Shared his love of music with the students.
A2: Yes, and multiple reasons why.
1) Ss need to be able to learn empathy to connect with others and make the world a better place (as corny as that sounds)
2) Learning Sci shows Ss learn better when they’re able to connect emotionally with the materials. #INeLearn
A2: Hearts and Emotions? Yes. We are human beings right? Engage all sense and feelings for deeper learning. Not to mention: learning is social. It's about relationships.
As are the heart & emotions
#INeLearn
R2: I believe it is so important to go beyond the facts and engage their hearts! We need to give them a why! Why should they care? Pull them in and connect with them! Give them an opportunity to take ownership of their educational journey. #INeLearn
A2: Absolutely this is the shift from compliance to engagement to empowerment. When hearts and emotions are considered deeper more personalized learned can be experienced. #INeLearn
R3 We opened our space unit with a Star Wars day. We saved Earth from an asteroid attack, a power outage that made us work completely with the use of flashlights, and so much more. We ended when Kylo Renn (me) made an appearance and my teaching partner defeated him! #INeLearn
R3 We opened our space unit with a Star Wars day. We saved Earth from an asteroid attack, a power outage that made us work completely with the use of flashlights, and so much more. We ended when Kylo Renn (me) made an appearance and my teaching partner defeated him! #inelearn
I teach government to seniors and talk about “the real world” all the time. Voting, prison, Supreme Court decisions, etc. I ALWAYS try to tug on their emotions #INeLearn
R3: #INeLearn While reading The Hunger Games, Ss were in districts, completed challenges, connected to the story and characters, and even had fun (gasp!-haha!). This is/was my fav unit to teach bc of the #engagement#excitement#rigor#experience
A3: I always loved teaching the introductions of functions. I would make an analogy of functions to relationships. They would always get a kick out of it and always remembered what a function was after that. #INeLearn
R1: High school vertebrae zoology. I’ll never forget the way Mr Mikula said “Chordata!”, dissections, dead rat as a hall pass, & my 1st cellphone & text message sent (adult me cringes I texted a peer in class) #INeLearn
A3: When we were learning about 3D figures, I had them create their ideal city with figures we had learned about. I still have Ss tell me how that helped them remember their figures! #INeLearn
R3: I brought my pet hedgehog in whenever I taught that polygons with the same perimeter could have different areas. We adjusted the panels of Quilla's cage to give her the largest area to roam. Kids loved "helping" her! #INeLearn
A3: Some of my favorites: Text Feature QR Code scavenger hunt dressed as pirates, kids dressed as idioms for fall party and classmates had to figure out what they were, Underground Railroad Simulation all over school even with Levi Coffin safehouse #INeLearn
A3: When I taught 4th my Ss did an IN county project around the time the economy was really bad for businesses. They researched their country & we partnered with the IN department of tourism to help persuade people to travel to those counties and explore IN of a budget #inelearn
#INeLearn A3 @1988project bringing Congressman John Lewis into speak with his class about the civil rights and his role. Textbooks can not provide that primary source history. Truly a remarkable story and life.
R3: One of my favorite lessons was teaching 4th grade. Ss chose a problem to solve in our community (problem based learned). One of the groups researched how to open a homeless shelter. They discussed the best location, cost, etc and came up with a plan to implement! #INeLearn
a3: brought the guitar in to the kinders.
Wow - they love musical instruments
we hardly did anything at all except talk very quietly and make small wonderful sounds together.
#INeLearn
A3: When I taught HS religion, I had my students create games based on the story of Moses. I also remember when I showed students pictures of Jesus from different cultures and then showed them a picture of what he really may have looked like and they were surprised. #inelearn
R3: I try to take different opportunities with science. DNA extraction with my @PLTWorg classes in the past, creating catapults with my #AP#Physics classes. Pumpkin explosions, egg drop boxes, mousetrap cars. I hope these are things my Ss remember. #INeLearn
R3 We opened our space unit with a Star Wars day. We saved Earth from an asteroid attack, a power outage that made us work completely with the use of flashlights, and so much more. We ended when Kylo Renn (me) made an appearance and my teaching partner defeated him! #inelearn
#INeLearn A3 For me, having Mike Eruzione share his story of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team with the students. The opportunity to hear about the Miracle on Ice from the captain.
https://t.co/9jMOLVu7SN
We finished the book Three Cups of Tea. We were working on critical thinking. I made students “butter tea” like the people in the book drank. They got to sit around the room, drink tea, & discuss/debate scenarios for which Pakistani village they would build a school. #INeLearn
Students still talk about it because they felt totally connected with the book and characters. They sat in circles like the village leaders did to discuss, evaluate, and defend their opinions. It wasn’t fancy, but it was impactful. It was a great end to the novel study. #INeLearn
R4 By setting goals for the lesson. What do I want my Ss to get from it? How will it lead to further learning? Are my Ss thinking critically? Are they collaborating? #INeLearn
High school physics teachers rock. To this day it’s the science I struggle with the most despite passing it in college, but my HS physics teacher hooked me & always made time to help me after school. I even did observation hours with him for grad school. #INeLearn boy I miss him
Yes! I will be working with a class in the spring to create catapults! Ss have been constructing a smaller prototype model but we will scale that up a notch for our “Spring Fling” #INeLearn
R3: I hope my 4th grade students remember Skyping with @mhoutswrites after IRA reading her book The Beef Princess so we could ask her our questions in person. I took the risk of asking her to Skype with us and am so glad I did. #INeLearn
R4: when Ss take and do calculations on their cars or the egg drop or whatever we did. Have students write about what they see. It’s not hard to get them to do something when they can see what is being done. #INeLearn
R4: Balance between engagement and content is best when we keep learning first.
Fun is fun, but we're in school to grow and become better people.
Learning first ... but learning in an engaging way. #inelearn
R3: Taking my students outside the classroom ALWAYS leads to profound discusssions. When students can interact in a unique environment, their experience and their excitement always changes. #INeLearn
R3. My 5th graders were learning the UDHR and a discussion of human rights led us to an emotional, raw conversation about my students' connections to these rights, it was so moving; relationships were deepened that day. #INeLearn
R4: We should focus on the standard’s big ideas, not the detailed materials. Example: You can teach theme through relevant, engaging material (text, visual, or audio) rather than only using boring, 100 yr old novels. #inelearn
A3: My students always bring up our trips to the local pond for water sampling. We gather data & samples for future labs with simple kits & Vernier probes. We walk there too, so I point out so much along the way. #INeLearn
A1: My high school offered an EMT certification class for seniors. Mr. Ashcraft was an amazing teacher. I ended up volunteering on an ambulance for many years because of it. #INeLearn
A4: forget balance! FUN and GAMES. just kidding.
Fun opens doors - surprising paths of inquiry - then a calm, focused (but quietly joyful) bit of learning.
After all - true learning is quite magical. You might say fun - but it's more
#INeLearn
R4: My thinking is very similar! Purposefully and intentionally planning the "fun" lessons with learning objectives in mind. It takes lots of planning to be fun AND effective! #inelearn
R4 By setting goals for the lesson. What do I want my Ss to get from it? How will it lead to further learning? Are my Ss thinking critically? Are they collaborating? #INeLearn
A4: You must be mindful of why you are doing something. What’s the purpose? What’s the intended outcome? Why did you choose that way to teach/practice it? Staying focused on your goals is key to balance. And reflection is so important after lessons! #INeLearn
Agreed. School should be fun for Ss. Engaging and challenging also. Again, an obstacle that is wrong with our thinking and the way we organize classes. #INeLearn
R4: Balance- so hard to find when you are trying to consider goals, rigor, engagement, standards- but through careful planning/collaboration, consideration of Ss needs, and understanding of curriculum expectations, Ts can create a lesson that is memorable for all #INeLearn
A4: This is where I’m going to bring up the importance of empowerment again. When students feel empowered in their learning the balance is always right and student agency is clear. #INeLearn
R4: Make it relevant! For college-bound kids, teach digital note-taking skills, it they’re profession-bound, show how the G-Suite can benefit their profession. #INeLearn
R5 I think of @tickleapp when my Ss are coding @Sphero to navigate a maze/challenge. Watching a classroom full of Ss problem solving and collaborating is truly magical. #INeLearn
A4 - a balance occurs naturally when there is a process that celebrates choice and an end product that is personal and authentic. Like a video. Much quiet and joyful focused work goes into the process and the learning is deep #INeLearn
R4: Teach a little content, have fun, ask them to make observations & ask questions. This is how I run my VR lessons and we have so much fun. I give quick formative assessments at the end & next class & they remember! #INeLearn
R4 Use the fun and games to hook them, get them interested, and show them the why for the learning. When the why is clear, it's easier to get Ss engaged, even in the less fun parts of the learning #INeLearn
R5: I’ve done some virtual labs this week with collisions. Creating discussions and performance demonstrations on @Flipgrid, creating #PSAs using @WeVideo (not brown-nosing because John is here...). Collection of data with @googlesheets. #INeLearn
#INeLearn A5 FaceTime, Hangouts and Skype. Go out and explore the world! Find speakers that will enrich the content of your lessons. Join the @GooglePlus community Connected Classrooms Workshop. Ts and classes looking to connect!
A5: Google Tour Builder is amazing. It lets Ss engage w/ places & topics. Ss just ❤️ it. Sharing a shared learning task with classrooms around the world (via @EmpaticoOrg) brings connections & learning to a whole new level. It’s connecting learning to the hearts of Ss. #INeLearn
A4: Recently I love how integrating Google Tour Builder with Poly and Google Sites for VR breakouts. Students are beyond engaged in content and empowered to learn how to create. #INeLearn
R5: I'm a @Desmos fanboy. Activity Builder is an awesome way to custom build lessons. I love it because I can see student thinking all in one place. My kids love the way they can manipulate the graphs & equations to make math pop. Then the conversations begin. #inelearn
R5: Great #edtech apps to help create memorable classes:
Adobe Spark
Flipgrid
G Suite
Screencastify
Pear Deck
Kahoot
Quizizz
Quizlet Live
Gimkit
GMaps Street View
Synth
Skype/Google Hangouts
... and on and on and on!
#inelearn
A5: I loved using Quizlet Live in my math classroom. Ss were engaged and would work together to figure out how to solve the equations of math problems. If I was still in the classroom, I would be integrating PearDeck and Flashcard Factory into my classes. #INeLearn
R5: R5: Google Expeditions my new favorite, but I also love virtual labs like @PhETsims and the Nobel Prize winning Blood typing game. And @edpuzzle#INeLearn
Learning can be fun and games and still be key. There does not always need to be a difference. However, not every lesson needs to be fun and games.
Make them both, let the students know they get a little of both.
#INeLearn

A5: any tech tool can create an experience if you use it right. @GetKahoot helps gamify your learning, @nearpod creates interaction with the content, @YouTube gives you learning material at the tips of your fingers. Etc. #INeLearn
I'm in an elementary school, and we love @ClassDojo portfolios. Do an activity that parents see, and we project as the teacher approves activities so we see some of the parent comments to their kids right away. Kids LOVE it, and parents do too! #INeLearn
A5: well of course I'm partial to one particular tech tool!
...should empower learners to express ideas w/ creativity voice & empathy. Should allow a rich process w/ built in reflection. Results: sharable, authentic, inspiring
#INeLearn
And this just gave me a great idea for a lesson next week. Use GMaps to create our own distance/displacement word problems. Sweet. I love this chat. #INeLearn
R5: how about we create something Ss can take with them by creating on @tinkercad then printing on a 3D printer from @1stmakerspace. Or using @arduino for coding (just got my stuff today). Thank you @LTSFoundation#INeLearn
R4: Focus on the learning - not the tool. If the tool makes the learning more difficult instead of pushing the students to think deeper - it's not the right fit. #inelearn
R6: a great demo works very well. You have to give them an attention getter. Anyone can do that (math, English, Social Studies, Science, and on and on) #INeLearn
A6: Could be techy: a short video or quick game. Could be no tech: like when I all of a sudden danced ballet (horribly) on a table. Both ways can grab their attention. 😂😂😂 #INeLearn
R6 Stand on a table. I'm not kidding. Obviously I have many other tricks that are more instructionally sound, but the table always gets their attention. :) #INeLearn
R6: Tips for capturing student attention:
Doodling on the white board
Using images
Incorporating music
Infusing parts of students' lives
Learning in nature
Storytelling
Student choice
... and on and on and on! :)
#inelearn
R6: Phenomena based questions. Specifically, I love using this resource to obtain GIFs that leave the students asking questions:
https://t.co/DRzxFTMF8X#INeLearn
A6: We have been working really hard on creating learning experiences that keep Ss in a constant state of wonder. Having provocations around for them to explore drives curiosity and holds their attention #INeLearn

#inelearn
Good learning comes from those questions and scenarios that have more than one correct answer! Let the students think in a way that works for them. Learning can be messy, loud, and FUN! :-) #INeLearn
R6: This is not tech related....but teaching silently. Students have to really focus on either body language or what I am writing on the board. #INeLearn
R6: I've got a quiz day playlist for passing time before we get down to business. It's cheesy as the day is long - Gonna Fly Now/Final Bell from the Rocky soundtrack. One of my guys today: "I love the Quiz Day playlist. I don't love the quiz." But it gets them zeroed. #inelearn
#INeLearn A6 Had Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid share his story and love of art with our students. Awesome to have his visit and showcase his skill. Students were engaged the whole time.
A6 Weird glasses with really intense eye contact in silence (kind of creepy, but funny) and singing-and I am not a good singer so they know if they pay attention I will stop. #INelearn
R7: Hopefully an incentive to become more curious, excited, and invested in the learning! #INeLearn Share their knowledge with others, apply it to real life
R7 I think of all the tech experiences I had in k-12 school that fueled my passion that I have today. At the time, they didn't seem super important. Cool, yes, but didn't strike me until I was a fifth year teacher and they handed me my first iPad. #OregonTrail#INeLearn
Music is awesome, and since I've got a freshman in the building now I usually have a decent idea what my kids are listening to. That goes a long way. #INeLearn
A7: You can change someone’s life or personality. In the long run, they may not remember every single fact, but their point of view may have changed because of a lesson you taught. Impacting lives is the goal of teaching. #inelearn
R7: In my Spanish classes, we practiced by creating stories -- with students as characters.
The language stuck. Students have come back to tell me of mission trips, work conversations and other places where language built bridges in their lives. #lifegoals#inelearn
r7: Collaboration - modeling how to work together.
Creativity - allowing the Ss to find a way to express their creativity in a way that is comfortable for them.
Critical Thinking - Teaching Ss to go deeper in their thinking.
Communication - How to SHARE their ideas. #INeLearn
That's awesome. I have a Google Form Ss can submit requests to for each class period. It takes me some time to vet the songs, but I love their varied choices. #INeLearn
R7: I have said that I hope I can get one kid that is at risk to be successful in life. Maybe be a dr or a lawyer or a teacher. Maybe to do better than they had been earlier. I want them to be a caring citizen. #inelearn
Hello, #INeLearn, @nadinegilkison said if anyone from FB was here....so glad to have caught you even if it's wrapping up soon! Looks like a great convo.
R7: Memorable lessons (Like recreating Woodstock or contentizing a current song) made me enjoy History, a class/content I had shrugged off for years before. I was engaged AND learned for 2 blocks a day! @SJHickle#inelearn
R7: Former Ss told me he uses something I taught him in videography with his film crew still today- "Zoom with your feet, not with you hands" #INeLearn
A8: I feel strongly that Ss need to connect w/ the world. Giving them experiences w/different places/cultures is critical to helping them be good global citizens. It develops empathy, understanding, and helps them see that despite differences, we have a lot in common. #INeLearn
Personally I talk about how I love Unicorns, Death Metal and Glitter. Students really seems to think that is weird.
Talking about the weird stuff seems to grab them and keep them.
#INeLearn
R7: I like to think that when we engage in problem based learning (specifically if it relates back to our community) students are made aware of issues that they can solve. #INeLearn
R7: Personal connections and ones Ss can see as part of their future are impactful. Ex: Shark tank projects over ancient inventions-they used modern edtech to create their presentations, pitches, commericals, prototypes. Afterwards they were better speakers&consumers! #inelearn
A7: My hope with my robotics team is that my students understand that failure allows for continued opportunity and growth. I hope to share my girl engineers mentors in the field so that they have someone to look up to. #inelearn
R7: They can inspire students' future career paths! Ex: Students picked an individual in history and created @BookCreatorApp ebooks. One of my students created their book in English&Spanish, so that his family members could read it. He wants to be an interpreter now! #inelearn
A8: Althought I am not a teacher this year - I want to give students a chance to find a pathway into their future careers. Just gotta find a way to make it happen. #inelearn
We've started up Girls Who Code clubs in the elementary schools in my new district. I would love to hold a summit and have young, enthusiastic coders connect with us virtually-maybe showcase their work, workplace, etc #INeLearn
A7: My hope with my robotics team is that my students understand that failure allows for continued opportunity and growth. I hope to share my girl engineers mentors in the field so that they have someone to look up to. #inelearn
A8: One of the things I’ve been encouraging faculty to do is to create a story or narrative to tell when they’re lecturing. After tonight’s conversation, I think encouraging them to do funny or ridiculous characters would be amazing! #inelearn
R7: Positive habit changes to help the planet. Valuable communication & collaboration skills. Being able to assess sources. Make informed decisions. Ex: My Ss I have made live changes like becoming vegan or switching to reusable water bottles. #DontBetheOnceler#INeLearn
R7. Respect, believing, and including ALL students equals Students feeling part of something, their voices matter, they have something to contribute... their unique, diverse experiences make the class/ world fuller! #INeLearn
A8: Our School is really building a community around empathy and demonstrating acts of kindness. When kids experience this kind of understanding for others they are naturally left with an impact. I want to continue to expand this on larger scales. #INeLearn
A8: I want to connect with more classes around the world. I also want to use Google Tour Builder more! It’s just about being intentional with creating experiences that will impact Ss. #INeLearn
#INeLearn A8 To get someone who sang at the Live Aid concert, participated in Band Aid or USA for Africa to join us and talk about the importance of musical activism in the 1980s. Remember those songs and the concert well.
R8: I want to try student led review lessons at the end of units. I want the kindergarten students to feel ownership of content but make it unique to their own style. #INeLearn
R8: I’m actively trying #edtech things that scare me. Things are messy and chaotic at times, but Practice makes perfect. Really exciting and empowering for Ss. #INeLearn
A8: Is really love to see more teachers in our district have guest teachers via Skype, google hangout, etc. This is something that I need to look into more to help them accomplish this. #INeLearn
R8: I’m actively trying #edtech things that scare me. Things are messy and chaotic at times, but Practice makes perfect. Really exciting and empowering for Ss. #INeLearn
R8: Honestly, less me and more them. I've got a senior student with some art skills who struggles in math. I pointed her to the Vi Hart videos the other day. Today she turned in a quiz covered with awesome math doodles and asked if we could make hexaflexagons in class. #inelearn
