Looking forward to finding out ways I can add more maker elements into HS Eng class.
Howdy Carl from Emerald, Oz here
Kureg..though I am not using it much these days..lol
Good morning friends. Steve from NJ here - getting the coffee brewing...
I tend to stay away from conversations about Maker Spaces. But this seems interesting.
Making translates to learning as Ss manipulate material, figure out it didn't work exactly as planned and try again.
In the younger grades making/creating=learning. The more hands on the better.
Interesting question ==> not sure about its director, though?
next to EZ pass the greatest invention ever AUTOMATIC COFFEE TIMER !! https://t.co/CKj4CNg6L2
I forgot to set the pot and now I must be patient. grrrrrr...
G'morning, . Fighting a headcold and lack of exp + knowledge on this topic. I foresee a lurking day.
You are the best! I love showing them how small the world is. Cannot thank you enough!
In music, once I've taught the skill, giving Ss time to play around with it and create. I need to do this much more!
I'm still on a learner's high for several terrific chats last night!
'Making' supports creativity, innovation, student voice, inquiry...student-driven...and, ultimately, deep learning.
Good morning Lurking today
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Happy to be here this morning!!
I've stolen some great ideas from 's book Make Writing series
husband finished all the pods - first plan of action foiled. Not firing on all cylinders this AM, for sure
Making coffee is something we all model every day. ;)
Hi Steve. You are part of the inspiration for this today.
The weekend is in sight! Hang in there!
Ahhh shoot that complete bites! lol
I know this is slightly off topic but I love when kids Make notes instead of me just delivering content. Often more engaging.
I'll try again.
Interesting question ==> not sure about its DIRECTION, though?
Good morning ! Sarah here.
When studying Industrial Revolution, Class formed assembly Line and constructed cardboard cars
Making awakens curiosity which leads to experimentation which results in learning
There's a post coming up on poetry.
BTW have you read Make Writing by
That's a great Good Morning.
All the time Our Ss make a model house based on energy efficient principles after researching the location
Hey! How are you and the family???
I denied having maker space in my media Ctr until someone said Tech Club was same thing.
Making is learning. Learning can be making.
Not sure if i am correct but when I think about making, I think about hands on. Am I understanding the Q correctly?
Will definitely check it out. Thanks.
I agree! But I need to be intentional about building it in w/ HS students because they benefit from it too! https://t.co/sKVlTBeR1O
In the younger grades making/creating=learning. The more hands on the better.
Tired of getting 'How to Make Microwave Popcorn' videos, CHALLENGED kids to make How To for other classes. https://t.co/LizJMkPEXX
Same here. What did I miss on Monday and Tuesday?
For Ts trying out new Technologies, if you don't provide time to play/experiment that tool never makes it into their practice--
Great topic today - I teach game design and development so everything in my class is about making / creating
I rolled out a yesterday. Giving it a try. Got rid of a lot of junk from my house that is now gold to Ss
Sending coffee thoughts your way!
And so much more. Thank you Chris. https://t.co/aST1b0xq9X
'Making' supports creativity, innovation, student voice, inquiry...student-driven...and, ultimately, deep learning.
My students are learning how to learn through making - they are empowered in the learning process - lots of trial and error
Still trying to feel human over here.
So good to see you here. Feeling better, I hope.
She is part of the inspiration for today's topic. Love her work. https://t.co/KMOuzda0qL
I've stolen some great ideas from 's book Make Writing series
BAM! There it is! ;) https://t.co/ECsw7CtRkm
I because our work is noble and clear. Because students are important. And because its so much fun.
When Ss "make" something it reveals something: what they know, who they are
Perhaps this:
MAKING equates with a product/outcome; is participatory; maker is vested in process
I need help with puppy training π£
Good morning ! Robin from ATL here.
For music, Garageband's cool bc you can go backwards Make first, analyze the notes and practice reading after the fact
In a lot cases, Making is a Discovery process that translates to learning in more ways than one.
I find it interesting how "Making" became a thing when the Arts were removed from many schools.
Fantastic. https://t.co/47fEuHmCBk
When studying Industrial Revolution, Class formed assembly Line and constructed cardboard cars
I think that esp with young children, the more hands on the better. I hear I forget, I see I remember, I do I understand.
Hey y'all! Lisa, ESE support checking in from a (right now) dry central Florida.
Isn't it the best? I remember feeling that way especially when was happening last winter.
I had my math students learn about basic machines (lever, screw, etc) then build a Rube Goldberg Machine. Lots of failing & learning
You have that right.
https://t.co/UZ1feWKZAx
Making awakens curiosity which leads to experimentation which results in learning
Inspiring creativity in our students also inspires a - try, fail, learn/reflect, try again.
Thats awesome. Great job of getting it going. Curious to c where it leads u https://t.co/xZeZDgxv0p
I rolled out a yesterday. Giving it a try. Got rid of a lot of junk from my house that is now gold to Ss
Make to learn is a way of learning by doing,in doing students understand and apply knowledge, possibly constructed new knowledge
Good morning friends! Just popping in to say hello! Makerspace in the MC & working w/extended day to include making & STEM.
Good morning friends! Just popping in to say hello! Makerspace in the MC & working w/extended day to include making & STEM.
When I was in school it wasn't called "Making" ... it was called wood shop and metal shop ...
The collaboration that comes from making is remarkable - kids teaching kids (and adults) / co-learning is beautiful
Really appreciate the trial and error reminder! So true!
Isn't failing and trying again beautifully wonderful? https://t.co/MPc3KlVEcq
I had my math students learn about basic machines (lever, screw, etc) then build a Rube Goldberg Machine. Lots of failing & learning
I'd say 70-75%. Way better than Monday. Thank for asking.
As an ELA T, making through has become the incentive to create & publish written work for a real audience w S blogs
Me too..I am a little nervous, but we will see.
Interesting. I think human beings will always find a way to make and express! https://t.co/8HptCzOhBk
I find it interesting how "Making" became a thing when the Arts were removed from many schools.
Making promotes Critical Thinking and Solution Finding in Ss which can be the most powerful Learning Tool there is!
Feeling better I hope:) Good morning to :)
tried to have class create Baseball cards to study WW II leaders big failure I wrote about it here https://t.co/3ue1ApbNX3
Which brings us back to yesterday's topic: soft skills.
https://t.co/zvLYIkAr6J
The collaboration that comes from making is remarkable - kids teaching kids (and adults) / co-learning is beautiful
I remember making in Home Ec. Sewing, cooking, designing --it was fun!
That's fantastic! My yr 3/4s (a couple of years ago) did a similar thing and would be impressed with your cinders!
I'm all for makerED but worry our classrooms are NOT viewed as places for creativity & tinkering? Anyone else?
Co-learning is what it's all about.
One question we have at my school, how do you measure the learning?
Phew! I was worried for you! :)
Exactly. We also removed Ind Arts, Family Consumer Science, and lots of hands-on science opps. https://t.co/hOG2FJ6uUs
I find it interesting how "Making" became a thing when the Arts were removed from many schools.
Making allows Ss 2 c learning from their lens not solely from pedagogy of Ts. They can problem solve & take own path 2 understanding
is a terrific medium for making and learning through passion! https://t.co/MwB91T5V2L
As an ELA T, making through has become the incentive to create & publish written work for a real audience w S blogs
Things that make you go hmmm.
Are you still sick Stacey??
I remember last spring when I looked up and my Ss had started their own paper puppet factory. All because we had creativity time:)
Making creates a deeper learning experience and career connections.
We have a FabLab at my school ... I did similar things with 1980's tech in Industrial Arts ... Making is NOT new
Kids teaching each other can be more powerful at times than anything I could ever say or do as a teacher! https://t.co/aOMoAZyOpE
The collaboration that comes from making is remarkable - kids teaching kids (and adults) / co-learning is beautiful
Our project is maker oriented / self driven - kids blog weekly reflection about process
There's a post on cooking scheduled for right about now. https://t.co/hAlyTuE4hl
I remember making in Home Ec. Sewing, cooking, designing --it was fun!
I love that this Gen. is learning how to make on their own, how to create less waste, that faster is not always better
is one of my favorite parts of teaching. I love it so much!
Making teaches persistence, problem-solving, and teamwork.
favorite lessons this year include golf course with 3D printed models. Ss are learning more than math
Making is an attitude. the teacher facilitates the attitude ... Making is not a special club requiring special tools
set up criteria for what you want them to solve. Does the made thing solve this. Get them to explain it
Making + learning = problem solvers. Ask Ss what problem they want to solve when they grow up.
Feeling better. Almost normal (which could be a good or bad thing depending who you ask).
Hey all... Being cheeky and jumping in - Markeeta from Adelaide, Australia.
Yeah. I am. It should not be seen as an extra. https://t.co/4EnijFr4LJ
I'm all for makerED but worry our classrooms are NOT viewed as places for creativity & tinkering? Anyone else?
that's most of the Making that we've done - simple. Stuff that can be used when Ss are living on their own
Creating something new that didn't exist before: students as learners/innovators who are meaningfully contributing to greater world.
Thank you for reenergizing me this morning. I love my morning dose of inspiration! πππ»ππΌππ½ππΎππΏ https://t.co/TkjbX0UIlU
For experimentation / making something, rubric should guide assessment
Failure isn't failure, but a step in the right direction of success! https://t.co/7NgECj6SqZ
Isn't failing and trying again beautifully wonderful? https://t.co/MPc3KlVEcq
I had my math students learn about basic machines (lever, screw, etc) then build a Rube Goldberg Machine. Lots of failing & learning
or sure :) It's my mantra!
The answer to this lies in documentation. It's part of the learning and the measurement. https://t.co/8P5HUM5QbT
One question we have at my school, how do you measure the learning?
It is just amazing, isn't it. (I sometimes get teary eyed I am so amazed)
Have my fist Mystery Skype today at 9:00. Looking forward to it.
I enjoyed HomeEc ... is was part of our wheel in middle school with Art and Wood Shop
It's the result of teachers being creative problem solvers:)
Thanks everyone! SO glad I was able to be here! Have a great day!
Excellent! We have the same phrase on a plaque in our HS
Last year my sts inquired into Indian art; made a piece of art to communicate their learning. Lots of struggle, but worth it.
Would you create the rubric w student input?
STEM days are always a huge hit for our students! They learn so much more when they can actively learn and relate to the material.
If you want problem solving/Maker students you need to have problem solving/Maker teachers
I see it as mindset that embraces failure, promotes risk taking, collaboration, design thinking
I got to witness this yesterday when 2 of my boys figured out a math prob without my help. S teaching S...priceless
I think constructing new knowledge is at the core of maker learning opportunities.
Great chat today! Hopefully my flight gets here soon! Happy Hump Day!
I imagine some of the gender limitations and expectations have changed for the better
It's true. Making is becoming a thing, but it's always been a thing. https://t.co/fzsIp52A4F
We have a FabLab at my school ... I did similar things with 1980's tech in Industrial Arts ... Making is NOT new
What documentation methods do you use, Cynthia?
Wish I had been able to do wood shop. Love that smell of cut wood in Home Depot ad Lowes!
Isn't play a form of learning?! "Making" is play!
Thank you for the amazing turn out today
I will borrow your brilliance.
oh, thx! The other side says "clowns will eat me."
Glad to hear you're on the mend!
Yes! We always "play" first before expectation/teaching occurs. https://t.co/1F5RHCALqd
Isn't play a form of learning?! "Making" is play!
Best feeling in the world! https://t.co/nQsn8BxaSN
I got to witness this yesterday when 2 of my boys figured out a math prob without my help. S teaching S...priceless
Making HAS to move deeply into core pedagogy. Too much feels like Friday PM reward time. Can't just be cute add-on.
Awesome! https://t.co/Nb9jeKgt0z
favorite lessons this year include golf course with 3D printed models. Ss are learning more than math
From the voices of students..."Making ROCKS and let's me do what I need to do!"
Trial and error have taught me the most. Making and Genius Hour look different with each class.
Thank you all so much! Great chat. Ready to take on today! (I think lol)
Do the math https://t.co/7j5QzaNfSV
Making + learning = problem solvers. Ask Ss what problem they want to solve when they grow up.
Oh yes! I totally agree with this. Playing is all about making! Design process over and over.
Don't forget we can still talk over at Spark Chat !!! see ya there
Have a great day, Friends!
have they not been in the past? Constructivism & constructionism are not new concepts - we just have better tools
Thanks for being cheeky and jumping in!
For "Maker Boost" watch clip of Food Network Chopped, give Ss a basket with 3 "ingredients" for making. Make math, sci or poems etc
Yes. Home Ec. Shop. Wish my "college track" had had more Gas Engines class https://t.co/9IYvyAhXbI

Thanks for the daily dose of PD Always a good time connecting and chatting! Happy Wednesday!

https://t.co/4T5gb87ynw
:) I must try to remember and do it more often. I enjoy 'meeting' & learning from a new group. Thanks for having me.
Have a great day everyone. Stacey- wishing I could bring you some comfort food!@iruntech
Hope that this is a phase and it will overflow. https://t.co/zrrs1vplic
and if it's limited to 'a space' what are they 'doing' in the classrooms?
Love this graphic! Helping students make connections, collaborate, ask questions & solve problems! https://t.co/8Au6ywEYiE
Ss helped refine Pi Day tshirt rubric. Helped teach them how to make rubric.
My maker lab travels in a bag ... has a drill, saw, hot glue gun, pliers, wire ... random stuff ... it can do wonders.
Great idea. How does your administration/leadership respond to it?
I will share some resources with you in a bit. Learning most from author of Make Writing
Thx for the chat. I'm afraid I don't have much to add. My 1st grdrs have such difficulty w/ this. Creativity is missing in many Ss.
I carved Theatre of Pain masks in styrofoam and poured mlted metal into it - bam ... metal sculpture. Making 80s style
This is a great example of what I've been driving at.
https://t.co/EYuJWuo9UN
Make = Learn ?: When Ss make solutions to social-ethical case studies Ss learn practical answers to theoretical pblms.
Thanks friends. I'm off to tackle the day. Praying for all in the path of the storms. Stay safe!
Periscope! Your class is on fire.
umm ... I don't know ... I never asked ... they have never said stop? LOL
Thank you so much for contributing. This is the first time I've moderated.....
Gotcha!
Do you see some direction after all?
lol Well that's a good start! I hope I haven't tempted fate by asking.
Guided play leads to learning even with the "big" kids!
Thanks to all! 'MAKE' it a great day!
Hope you played Motley CrΓΌe's Home Sweet Home while doing it.
Have a great day all! I'm off to get ready for bed.
People who come to MakerFaires with their kids and end up even more interested. I call them "advanced kids" https://t.co/FZGqFpFz2C
Guided play leads to learning even with the "big" kids!
Always better to be forgiven than ask permission.
Gender issues? ... in the 80s ... at my JrHighSchool EVERY kid took shop... and made stuff.
I have a couple of trebuchets laying in my room now ...
Very true. More likely to be given in some cases too!
In college theatre arts, we called it Stagecraft. No set, no show. Unless it was Our Town.
you bring up an interesting question, for sure Miriam.
Oh my! My son would be insanely jealous!
That's awesome! I had some different experiences for sure π
Thank you so much for joining in David! Safe travels! https://t.co/yRFiybEcm1
