This twitter chat stands for "Wins And Losses Ed Chat" and will be a chat where students reflect on the previous week to celebrate victories and reflect on losses to turn them into victories.
Intros: Welcome to #waledchat! Introduce yourself, where you are from, your role in education, and tag someone who you'd like to see join you here tonight! #waledchat
Phil Strunk from Northern Virginia signing in! I am the host for Wins And Losses and I am also a 7th Grade US History II teacher! So glad you are all here with me tonight! #waledchat

A1: Best lesson was probably my Westward Expansion Twitter Chat where students took on different roles of different groups and had to tweet from their perspective. I think the authenticity behind the chat, and their excitement over it made it so great! #waledchat
A1: I modified this lesson but I loved the Geometry "Shapes in your world" project. Students took pictures of objects in their world that represented geometric shapes. Students had the option of submitting their project on Instagram. #waledchat
A1: I had a great experiential lesson involving the Silk Road. Students had to deal with trading, bandits, sandstorms and predators as they followed the Route. It was kinesthetic and caused the students to be immersed in the content. #waledchat
A1: I modified this lesson but I loved the Geometry "Shapes in your world" project. Students took pictures of objects in their world that represented geometric shapes. Students had the option of submitting their project on Instagram. #waledchat
A1: The best PD I've done this year has to be #edcampNSV and helping to lead a book study of the Innovator's Mindset (@gcouros)
Both great, attendee driven learning experiences.
#waledchat

A1: Best PD = ED Camp style for our secondary schools was a huge hit = VOICE & CHOICE!! Also just recently, Ts I serve loved playing with Flippity #waledchat
A1: I went to a training and came back and presented my learning and understanding to Ts and para educators who couldn't go to the training so everyone had a better understanding of the new resource and how to support students. #waledchat
A1 Students read @newsela article on MLK’s “I have a Dream” speech. The SS annotated, discussed, responded to writing topic, took quiz, and reflected on article using @flipgrid. It allowed me to learn about their dreams. #waledchat
A1: My @Screencastify + students = Magic!!!! PD.
What makes it great? Giving students voice in a way that is comfortable and unique for them. #waledchat
A1 The best PD I have developed includes great variety. Movement, fun, laughter, smiles, reflections, student voice, empowerment, choice. I try to leave a day of PD where my participants learned while having fun...just like students. So important. #waledchat
A1 My What Makes You Wonder project. Ss defined a driving question, created their own 15 min lesson plans, and taught their peers in small groups! The reflections were the most amazing I've seen from 9th graders EVER! #waledchat
A1: My favorite lesson was in Social Skills where the students had to enact proper manners for a variety of situations that they may be face over the holidays... one was receiving a gift they didn’t like. Definitely got a few laughs in! #waledchat
A1 Starting Sketchnotes is def a high point this year. Still a work in progress by Ss dig it, and I have learned so much about my Ss talents. #waledchat
A1: Shout out to @megan_hacholski. Last year she coordinated a @breakoutEDU for our entire school during the final days of the year. Would love to recreated that with the class of @MrBaskwill. Love them little Canadians. #waledchat
A1 Students read @newsela article on MLK’s “I have a Dream” speech. The SS annotated, discussed, responded to writing topic, took quiz, and reflected on article using @flipgrid. It allowed me to learn about their dreams. #waledchat
A1: The lesson below was so great bc the students took control of the content, but it was truly amazing that they realized something so simple hit the 4 Cs! #waledchat
A1 One of my favorite lesson formats: students write about a book using a series of creative prompts, share part of what they wrote, write a little nugget of what each of their classmates wrote, & then respond to each other with connections, questions & appreciations. #waledchat
A1: Had a great time using VR and Alexander Hamilton while students synthesized passages from a few Hamilton books. The excitement watching students explore Paterson Falls knowing why it would be important to the new nation was really awesome #waledchat
My first graders recently went through the writing process to write a narrative. It was successful because of the way it was broken down into manageable pieces and modeled. I enjoyed conferencing with my students about their writing!
#waledchat
A2: I try to have as many experiential lessons or activities that I can. The students enjoy them and it gives them something to remember that they can connect learning to. #waledchat
A2: The addition of the Instagram option made it real and "cool" for kids. This has caused me to look for more activities that involve options that kids are already doing and are part of their world #waledchat
A2: I feel like it really set a fire in my soul as an educator to move beyond mediocrity and strive to do more authentic tasks with my students. We recently finished web design, hoping for some podcasts in an upcoming unit! #waledchat
A1. I actually did a "How to use Twitter" PD. Not many showed up, but those that did actually learned how to use twitter. Publicize. Promote. PLN! I love my Twitter folks. #waledchat
A1. I think my favorite lesson this year has been my Pythagorean Theorem lesson. I gave the kids a puzzle to put together that was made of squares and triangles. No directions other than put it together. Once they had it together “what do you notice” and we discussed. #waledchat
A2: While writing the PD, I was able to keep gathering ideas to implement and try out in my class. I have been really embracing the CREATIVITY that @Screencastify can bring to our students. #waledchat
A1: the best lesson I have designed this year is a webquest lesson for the Middle Ages - students design a character, and maintain a blog as that medieval character as they experience events from the Middle Ages. #waledchat
A1: I did a Wish Gift project with my modified class just before the holidays. They wrote a holiday wish for each student in the class, decorated an envelope, and sent them to each other. We had a class breakfast and exchanged right before break. #waledchat
A1: Students read a passage about the Mars rovers. They then had to analyze the physical and psychological challenges of the scientists working with the rovers. They demonstrated their learning by pretending to work for NASA and creating video job ads for scientists. #waledchat

#waledchat
A2 I know make a point to make all PD be full of energy. Create the unexpected for adults. Let them have fun like kids. I include music, videos, movements, challenges, hooks. It's all about keeping them on edge. We need to empower Ts and their voice, like we do for Ss. #waledchat
A2: It showed me that the students can hear what they should do until they’re blue in the face, but they enjoy acting it out, and need to practice the skills, not just learn them. #waledchat
A2: It has created a mindset shift that changes how PD is planned and executed. Sit and gets will be a thing of the past and voice & choice will always be present.
#waledchat
A1. Cont’d The kids came up with a^2+b^2=c^2 on their own using the visual from the puzzle and our discussion. They we started played with the theorem. It was great! #waledchat
A1: It would be a tie between my escape room and my survivor activities. Both threw my students off guard but they rose to the challenge. But they are lots of work to create. #waledchat
A2: this lesson inspired me to create a similar quest for my 8th grade to blog as if they were a federalist or democratic republican living through the first 5 presidents in the new republic. #waledchat
A2: I am already thinking about future writing units for the remainder of the year and the way I can help my students understand that authors and poets continue to revise their work and make it the best it can be!
#waledchat
We did a math standards pd for our district's itinerant teachers and did a Survivor theme to get them to work together. The activities took a bit to prepare but it was a hit! #waledchat
A2 More real reflection opportunities are a must in my class now. Student voice and choice are paramount so we'll go full steam ahead and see where we end up! #waledchat
A2: It set the bar in my mind for future activities and projects. The kids were very engaged with this project, so I want to keep doing similar project based learning throughout the year that gets even better. #waledchat
Q2: The kids did a really great job with the project, so the math teacher and I have been working to find more collaborative, interactive activities we can do together that have the same level of engagement. We are trying to make the modified classes an actual program. #waledchat
A1: the best lesson I have designed this year is a webquest lesson for the Middle Ages - students design a character, and maintain a blog as that medieval character as they experience events from the Middle Ages. #waledchat
You have really inspired me to play around more with @screencastify. I have used it a couple times, but hate how I look and sound on video. I gotta man up and do it for my kiddos! #waledchat

A1: I taught a chrome tools and extension session that got crazy carried away because everyone found something they loved. It was wonderful chaos!! #waledchat
A2: a personal goal this year is to help build capacity with Ts paras in our building. We are all having more meanigful conversations about what Ss are doing and the transfer of learning we haven't seen before. It is pretty amazing. #waledchat
A2: That lesson started from reading "The Wild Card". I was tired of the way I was teaching and felt inspired to try something different. As a student teacher, I feel like I am trying new things because it is the best time to do so. I am not afraid to be a little crazy #waledchat
After the first couple of videos, it gets easier. My south-eastern KY accent on @Screencastify sounded weird at first but now I’m like… HEY that's ME! :) Plus the students really enjoyed the feedback I left for them using video! #waledchat

A3: Just recently I had a lesson where after notetaking I wanted them to write a RAFT (a role playing writing assignment) as if they were a middle school aged student writing a journal entry. Instead I got lots of essays and it was clear my expectations weren't clear. #waledchat
A3: Direct instruction just doesn't seem to work with my low level kids. Many of the direct instruction lessons that I have attempted have been met with disruptions and confusion #waledchat
A3: The last time I used Kahoot was early in the fall. I realized that there was a segment of my Ss that were just clicking to answer or to answer the first rather than thinking about the question. Ss were engaged with the bright shiny object, not the content. #waledchat
A3 Working collaboratively & sharing in the tasks allows for various mindsets to prevail. I have had a mix of very dry, traditional presentations that went over time allotted mixed with high energy. Not having that control is a learning journey. It is part of teamwork. #waledchat
A3: My PD on Twitter and the powerful learning experiences within didn't hook as many people as I'd hoped, but there are a few more #btsdtigers on Twitter now than there was last year. Next step = Twitter Chats #waledchat
A3: A PD that didn't go as planned were optional tech. sessions at the opening of school. They weren't attended well, possible due to staff not having voice or choice in them.
#waledchat

A1 the best lesson I had was a community development project. Ss picked a vacant lot from our town and created development plans. Top plans presented to our borough council. One is coming to reality this spring! #waledchat
A2 The lesson inspired me to go deeper into some Social Studies topics. The students’ responses showed me that the Ss need to get more info on the struggle for racial equality in this country. #waledchat
A1: My favorite way to start a chapter is w a simulation or role playing situation. I then follow that up w talking about the historical situation that they were acting out. I've done that w diff economies, claiming territories like Euro explorers, & more #waledchat
A3: using speech to text to have students create a doc to retell a story, biggest problem being my students have a hard time reading whag was typed for them so unable to check to fulling know what they need to change and edit.#waledchat
A3 I tried a game without fully vetting it and it completely blew up. Used as a teachable moment for me and my Ss about the importance of doing your due diligence and rolling with the punches to fail forward #waledchat
I totally agree, which is why I started not liking Kahoot. I started using Quizizz. The lack of time pressure seems to keep them more focused on the questions. #waledchat
A3: Today I was modeling how to retell the story using 5 Finger Retell using the illustrations in a wordless picture book. The meaning of the lesson was lost because so many students were saying the story was similar to "It" the scary movie. Expect the unexpected...
#waledchat
A3: I have had a lot of those moments especially due to just starting out. Today, I thought I wanted to do group work with a worksheet, but it was a little too chaotic, and I decided that, during 7th hour, I would give the students 2 minutes to do a problem. #waledchat
A3 other than a few bright spots, my past year has not quite been where I want it. Looking to change my Civics class to a PBL curriculum w/ focus on writing, reading, reflection, and above all: DOING! #waledchat
A3: I did a basic, guided notes lesson on Hamilton's Financial Plan - I discovered they didn't make a connection with it and had trouble understanding excise taxes and tariffs. #waledchat
In my class, students choose one of the Four Pathways to Genius and create Genius Hour/Passion Projects.
#waledchat

A3) I am going to go with PD. Most of the PD that I have had to sit through could have been sent in an email. PD should be new and interesting, not just a reminder of what you told me last month, and the month before, etc. #waledchat
A2 Starting lessons like that shows you need to pique Ss interests, you need to get them to see the relevence of the lesson. I try now to really explain to Ss *why* they're learning about what they're learning besides it being in the standards #waledchat
A3 I’m never happy with the first unit of the year. The students are still in the process of figuring out how they want to approach their learning, their work, each other, and themselves. That process is important, but the unit itself always feel lumpy.
#waledchat
A4: I started taking a good hard look at how I was really integrating technology. Was it a bright shiny object or did it support the learning goals and acquisition of knowledge? If it doesn't support learning, I don't use it. #waledchat
A4: Like a quarterback who threw an interception, you've got to have a short memory with the losses. Study the tape, learn what needs to change, and go score that touchdown! #waledchat
A4: It has caused me to rethink how I do things. I have shifted to more options for kids in class and some video lessons through Youtube or Screencastify that are more individualized for Ss #waledchat
A3 One of my jeopardy games didn't go as well as expected because some of my students didn't have high enough skills to complete the questions #waledchat
A2: As a student teacher, I have doubts and uncertainties, but after connecting with @_on11 who always says I am a step ahead, I feel confident and ready to take on the world. I am excited to meet my future students and hope I can make a difference. #waledchat
A3: Using a website for supplemental instruction. I didn’t fully explain my expectations and I haven’t used it in the way I’ve wanted to. Definitely need to get back on track. #waledchat
A3: @megan_hacholski and I presented at a workshop on Google classroom the fall for 3 (count 'em!) people. It was painful. The people couldn't join the sample classroom because they were not a part of our district. -1. #waledchat
A4: A true belief in a #GrowthMindset and trust to #failforward. Take every instance where things don't go well as a chance to learn and grow, take risks & innovate!
#waledchat
A3: I wanted my kids to make a Twitter page as though they were the main character in our last Read Aloud. I think it was a bit too creative for my modified class, and they just aren't used to doing this kind of work. It was too rigorous for them. #waledchat
A4 Reflect, Adapt and Change for next time.
I had a mentor who used to say
"We are not brain surgeons. When we make mistakes, no one dies." Just get out there and give it your all everyday! #waledchat
A3: We planned a great @Schoology session, then a massive staff turnover totally deflated our plans. The admin decided we should not push a new program on new staff. #waledchat
A4) Without failure we do not learn as much. When I have a bad lesson, I adjust for next time. If I give a bad PD, I realize that I misunderstand my message or audience. #waledchat
A4: I use them as moments where I don’t want to make the same mistake twice. I always think about what went wrong, and what worked, and adjust accordingly. #waledchat
A3 One of my first @skypeclassroom experiences. I connected with a class in India expecting one topic and was given something very different. My Els and I laughed about it, made the best of it, and learned from it for future sessions. #waledchat
A4: I'm always reflecting on why the Ss didn't make a connection with a lesson, or what could I do differently. So, I stopped class one day and we did sketchnotes to show Hamilton's Financial Plan with another explanation #waledchat
A3: A couple times this year I've tried some group work that just didn't work out due to the dynamics of that particular class on that particular day. Had to move to independent work. #waledchat
A4: Gotta reframe the "losses" and find the positives hidden within. Not everything was bad. Believe it or not, there probably were some excellent moments embedded within. Take a deep breath and rejoice in those. #waledchat
A3- showing how to play a meth game quickly... then when they had to do it on their own-no clue! Just trying to get too much done too quickly. #waledchat
A5: Super excited for our education foundation's corn-hole tournament on Saturday! An opportunity to do something I enjoy, while supporting our school system and engaging with members of the community #waledchat
A4: I start by heading to the local DQ where I give myself a moment to grieve before refilling my script. Then, I figure out how to reteach the objective and what I want changed for the future. I keep a notebook in my desk and attach a copy to the LP before filing. #waledchat
A4: look for another way for kids to evaluate what they said. Am moving from speech to text to using @fliogrid. Ss can listen to their video to make sure they included what was needed and either try again or submit another one to continue with their thinking.#waledchat
A5: With our first week of practice coming up, I’ve got to engage my brain in creating some practice plans! Soccer has always been a huge part of my life, and I want to help keep the girls excited about playing! #waledchat
A4: Sometimes you need to reteach and sometimes you need to forget! I've learned when to stop, recycle the paper and move on. Reflect on how you can relate to students in a new way and try something different the next day. #waledchat
A5) I am serving as an appraiser for Destination Imagination for our region this weekend. Interacting with these kids that have chosen to join these groups to enrich their learning, AWESOME! #waledchat
A5: This weekend will have some house projects, a trip to see Black Panther, and some grad school work. The gym will be sprinkled in to give another brain break alongside family time.
#waledchat
A5: This weekend, due to battling a cold, I plan on relaxing a little bit and then working on my EDTPA. Student teaching is an amazing experience, but I need to keep moving forward so I can achieve my dream and finally have my own classroom. #waledchat
A4 Every lesson is a chance to learn. No matter what, I always reflect on the experience and look how I can be better. I am often my own worst critic. I am never satisfied and look to make everything better. #waledchat
A5: Not exactly recharging, but I'm excited to complete my first digital breakout and put it into action! But I will be coaching some youth sports this weekend. #waledchat
A3: If I am being honest, pretty much every lessson I have taught this year needed work before joining twitter. I have learned so much and have been inspired by all of the people I follow. I can't thank y'all enough. #waledchat
A4 When a lesson doesn’t work, I say, “That didn’t really work.” I explain what I was going for, why it didn’t work, and why it‘s important. Then I say, “Let’s try something else tomorrow.” So far they’ve always come back to try again.
#waledchat
A5 This weekend I will spend some time with family, read, plan and get some amazing surprises ready. Checking in with friends is also important. Balance is key. #waledchat
A5: We have our annual faculty bowling event on Saturday. That is always a good time and great opportunity to spend time with those in the building you never get to see. #waledchat
