Please start by introducing yourself! We are going to post Q1 in 2 minutes!
-
I'm super excited to be hosting with tonight! I teach 3 grade math/science in Alabama!
-
Good evening! excited to be here
-
Hey Phiona! How's your week going?
-
-
Melinda from Hamilton Canada; I teach high school math
-
Hey everyone! I am the community manager and a former MS special educator!
-
-
Hey Alex, elementary tech teacher, stuck in LA traffic as usual
-
-
welcome Alex! On the bus??
-
Glad you could join us, even in the traffic!
-
Welcome - it's nice to see another Ontarian https://t.co/dVFiaTtiEb

We are using a Q1,A1, Q2, A2 format in !
-
-
-
A1: is important because their needs are constantly evolving and they can help comm. them to us!
-
A1: If we listen to them, we get to see them as more than their "label" and see their full being!
-
They can communicate their needs and set their own goals too
-
Awesome sentence! We are chatting about in if you want to join in!
-
A1) We should plan for ways to use S's ideas before asking for their input.
-
Setting their own goals is HUGE. Also know when they've mastered them.
-
For sure. We need to make sure the voice has a place to go.
-
-
My Ss think it's important to voice their thoughts so we can help them better and so they can help others.
-
Two way feedback makes knowing what works much more manageable! https://t.co/09pd7p1HXA
-
-
They can communicate their needs and set their own goals too
-
One of my summer reads is "Leaders of Their Own Learning"
-
A1: S learning deepen when they're engaged in the learning process (setting/deciding on extent to which criteria are met)
-
-
when Ss have s choice they submit their best work!
-
A1: Students NEED to feel being a part of their learning, which includes assessments!
-
A1 (con): We can avoid Ss feedback going into a void by purposefully planning when input is collected (kudos: )
-
Ss don't choose to go to school. They are a captive audience, but Ts that listen turn Ss into participants in their learning
-
all about that ENGAGEMENT!
-
definitely! We should ultimately be teaching Ss how to take responsibility for their own learning! https://t.co/oxHGkklng2
-
-
A1: S learning deepen when they're engaged in the learning process (setting/deciding on extent to which criteria are met)
-
-
-
definitely! excited to hear your ideas for how we can purposefully involve them for Q2!
-
A2- My Ss design Kahoots! and questions for reviews I can put into our favorite apps.
-
A2) Ss can ask the big questions at the start of a unit. These Qs can define what will be assessed at the end
-
Ss created rubrics is a great way to do this! They decide what's important and what should be mastered.
-
a2: students can create many of the same assessments that Ts can. ( ,Gforms, quizizz, etc
-
There is more ownership by the S when it is their OWN goal. Makes them feel trusted with the responsibility.
-
yup, and it shouldnt stop when it comes time to evaluate
-
and we don't have to stay up until midnight doing it =)
-
Love that Ss are creating the assessments! What happens next? https://t.co/xcUqamh3UY
-
-
a2: students can create many of the same assessments that Ts can. ( ,Gforms, quizizz, etc
-
We assume Ss get the purpose of school, but it is our job to make clear why we are in that room together each day
-
A2: if Ss know what the overarching learning goals are - they can co-create ways of showing their learning & highlight gaps
-
A2 using a student created assessment tool in the classroom validates and encourages learning. Process
-
A2: My Ss believe when they set their goals they do better. Ss know they've mastered when they can teach others.
-
awesome! what do they do with the assessments? do they assess each other?
-
Depends on the chosen tool - group review is fun and inspiring and also helps peers consolidate learning
-
Q3 is coming up in 2 minutes!
-
with tools like kahoot and quizlet live - students have the opportunity to collaborate in effort to win
-
I love the new Kahoot group feature!
-
awesome! do you find that Ss are able to interpret progress solely based on stats provided by tool?
-
Absolutely - collaboration is so critical! And fun!
-
-
A2: co-creating assessments allow class to see multiple evidence of learning & Ss perform to their strengths; Ts plan less
-
I'm all about planning less! Ss own their work more when they create it.
-
-
A3 avoid lost voices? Build in opps for voice - polling tools, Gforms, padlet, today's meet etc
-
Once again, the ownership is there when Ss feel we trust them enough to be apart of the teaching/learning.
-
A3 back channel during discussion
-
A3: PBL: student voice and choice. Celebrate learning of all students. Students will own learning!
-
A3- Google Forms are my favorite right now. Give the quiet ones another way to be heard, not just vocally.
-
Those are some GREAT suggestions! I definitely remember Ss who preferred written chat via verbal class discussions
-
A3: no tech? Good old post its and a parking lot
-
What do you mean by back-channeling?
-
A3)Stop using raising hands when you want discussion. Value turn and talk and collect responses in multiple formats.
-
These are effective especially when SS help to write the questions https://t.co/aoe4RUhnIh
-
-
with tools like kahoot and quizlet live - students have the opportunity to collaborate in effort to win
-
Robert from L.A. joining late. Middle school English.
-
Awesome! What are ways you celebrate a diversity of Ss in your school?
-
Welcome Robert! Missing my MS teaching days!
-
back channel is like projecting this Twitter feed on your screen so Ss can respond 'no need to raise hand
-
A3: variety of ways for Ss to show their know. Videos, pictures, group discussion, 1 on 1.
-
Great way to hear what others have to say other than just those who raise their hands.
-
Welcome! Feel free to jump on in!
-
but could be todaysmeet or padlet or .... - visual
-
A1 The best way I've found to incorporate S voice in form. assess. is with writing conferences. I don't grade, we discuss.
-
A3: One strategy that I used was priming certain Ss for thoughts and for how they can share so they feel comfortable w/ it!
-
-
also, collecting all work in the cloud allows every1s stuff to be showcased
-
Students can create project assessments for each other's classes, with a basic blueprint from the subject teacher.
-
wait time is big. We can't expect As right away
-
every student had a role..a job well done is a job well done. Showcase
-
love that strategy Alex! visually shows that every thought is valued and ok!
-
Q4 is coming up in 2 minutes!
-
Sounds like a great way to highlight Ss strengths and improve areas for growth! https://t.co/slHB93bxwl
-

-
I always have a common class writing focus & a personal focus for each S. I make notes on Ss' essays https://t.co/Nx7UpX9f1T
-
-
Very cool! how do you keep track of notes? mentally or using recording system? both?
-
Some Ss process ideas more slowly, some Ss could go deeper; wait times improvelevel depth of answers https://t.co/iEImxAhHx8
-
-
wait time is big. We can't expect As right away
-
This got me thinking! How about content-focused twitter chats for Ss with Ss moderators! https://t.co/5slfe33gXm
-
-
but could be todaysmeet or padlet or .... - visual
-
That's an awesome idea. But then we run into age issues w/ younger Ss.
-
Wait time is empowering & emboldening. I often call on the LAST Student who raised their hand. https://t.co/IH5rebuaON
-
-
wait time is big. We can't expect As right away
-
A3: "Quiet" students are heard by "hiring" them as Project Managers, reporting group updates to teachers.
-
A3: Using multiple methods of process and product which will allow all Ss to be heard no matter how loud their voice is.
-
that's awesome! Having those levels of focus for communicating growth areas creates great culture for learning!
-
-
I'm brainstorming ways to still do this. Thinking something GAFE
-
A4: I create Google forms at the end of each unit asking guiding questions re communication, learning and process.
-
definitely did this and learned it takes time for some Ss to take on this role. Any tips for helping them
-
A4: My Ss rate their growth on a scale of 1-4 on a class chart. (name on back of sticky so only I see!)
-
A4: AT and CH are Ss of mine who did a Google Form for me this week. They are proud of learning multiplication and division!
-
great step towards getting quieter students to communicate thoughts about learning process and feedback cycle
-
Love this idea of Ss teaching because helping peers become leaders benefits entire class! https://t.co/P0CJYPHWsv
-
-
Hire a non-quiet project manager who is an active participant and then have them train the next quiet project manager.
-
A5: Took students to last week. It was life-changing! They already are planning for Adv. Academy next summer!
-
-
-
Right now I'm changing my mindset from creating lesson plans to creating learning experiences!
-
A4: Google forms & my favourite - Traffic lights -I have short convos with Ss 1they use the lights to describe their learning
-
Gotta love those google forms!
-
For all class discussions, I acknowledge by name each S who raises their hand & I personally invite Ss who haven't yet shared
-
A5: when I had Ss find volume of room! It was powerful because Ss had different strategies and used estimation efficiently!
-
Q4: They watch the live results with me for instant feedback on whether or not they get it. Also reflection after Formatives.
-
Q5 is now up in ! One more Q after that!
-
A5- Creating our first PBL on plants and their growth! It didn't go as planned, but the Ss LOVED planting and researching.
-
A5- It was powerful because of the that went into the project.
-
what happened? Often projects don't go as planned but as you know it's how we react!
-
Q5: showing Ss you can have fun while learning. Their input matters and affects our class.
-
A5: doing away with comprehensive tests and assessing on tasks. Ss create models, explain phenomena, and analyze data.
-
A5 Memorable experiences are varied, but I truly strive to make each class a personally MEANINGFUL experience for each S.
-
We got hung up on planning and drawing out our garden. Reflection !
-
awesome! do you have an example of this? I vaguely remember you mentioning Tyga haha!
-
I love this! Life isn't a comprehensive test!
-
A5: Fishbowl discussions of texts using different literary lenses & back channel chat -HOT & max S engagement
-
-
-
A5 "Be positive and do some reading this summer " AT
-
A5- "Keep practicing what we have already learned." CH
-
A6) We had a round table discussion with small groups to end the year. We all reflected and told stories. It was fun too.
-
A6: By teaching them 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, encouragement and finding their passion.
-
A6 The very best reflection a S can do should be prompted by their involved parents at home who regularly ask about learning.
-
That sounds like a lot of fun!
-
A6: I think it always returns to the Q "what do you want to learn next?" get them excited about what's to coming!
-
A6(con): Or help them find summer learning opportunities to create bridge!
