A1: (this is hard). I see this is about Gratitude (thanking the teacher). It reminds me of the power of learning "I want to know what's going on". #bcedchat
A1: (this is hard). I see this is about Gratitude (thanking the teacher). It reminds me of the power of learning "I want to know what's going on". #bcedchat
A1 - this is hard...and then when I listened to the words again I was sad...Am I ready for the real world? Will I pass the test? #yikes#bcedchat#weneedmoreprod
#BCEdChat A1: Professional Development because I am always striving to find new ways to "reach" my students. The speaker wants to be ready for "the real world " & my goal is make Ss critical thinkers post high school
A1: I see it as an opportunity for professional development. Mental health awareness about how we can address students self-doubt & confidence. #bcedchat
A1: I agree with most of the responses so far that gratitude is definitely a theme we could connect., but I couldn't help but think of prof. Development too! #bcedchat
A1: Had to look up the words and I am going with gratitude. Agree with @brynmw and @jfprovencher27 But it is also about still needing a teacher so he can work out what is going on. #bcedchat
#BCEdChat Carol from Surrey! A1 Definitely pro d. I hear an early career teacher hoping that colleagues and experience will support their success. Pre-service learning is only the start!
Hmmm. I had forgotten about this song. Feels really teacher-centric listening to it now. "Teacher teacher, can you teach me?" Might be a call for more PD inviting teachers to explore student-centered pedagogy that elevates student voice? #bcedchat
A1: I would say it relates to the last day of school - uncertainty & some fear about what the future holds & whether what he learned in school will be relevant to his future. #bcedchat
I see them as connected. Gratitute for what the teacher has done, but with the professional development to be able to do this as a teacher (from the student perspective). #bcedchat
A1: OK, this is a stretch but it reminds me of the last day of school because it seems like 80’s music and hard rock and reminds me of high school. #bcedchat
I want to say this song was somewhere between 84 and 86 and so the test taking and the just teach me what I need to know was real for me...I am very grateful to be a learner & educator in todays world #bcedchat
A2 I can still remember when I loved Science (grade 6) and then it got tainted - focus was based around what the textbook said we should learn.....sigh.... #bcedchat
A2: I know this is off from the song, but from your options the "Sometimes I feel I've got to Run away I've got to Get away" makes me think of the opportunity for experiential learning and new experience from the in-class setting we are used to #bcedchat
A2: Assessment!!! Not so much formative, as that is immediate and impactful, but rather summative. “Now I run from you” as summative doesn’t truly capture the essence and complete picture of the student. #bcedchat
A2: Assessment!!! Not so much formative, as that is immediate and impactful, but rather summative. “Now I run from you” as summative doesn’t truly capture the essence and complete picture of the student. #bcedchat
This is definitely assessment! "Once I ran to you, now I run from you." Testing has ruined assessment for so many Ts and Ss - used to be joy in producing evidence of learning. Now it's just tainted love. #bcedchat
A2: I’m not doing a very good job of connecting these songs to anything but my experiences. I’m back in high school. Time to explore those thoughts. #BCEdChat
#BCEdChat Laughing so hard about A2! I'm an assessment nut, but I so feel the pain & often want to "run from" it! The "pain" it gives me is genuine becuz assessment is changing too quickly. It makes me "toss and turn" - I've shed "tears" & "give my all" to assessment every day!
#bcedchat A2 I'm hearing assessment, mostly because I think too many of us conflate assessment with evaluation. And then Ss get the wrong idea about learning. So the whole idea is tainted.
So true, but it sure feels like a lot of the time we spend in preparing for and taking tests is probably not going to be adequate for those changes, whatever they may be. #bcedchat
A2: The feelings of anxiety around testing/summative assessment that many S’s feel “...and I’ve lost my light, for I toss and turn I can’t sleep at night” #bcedchat
Ooohhhh so tempting to send @RosePillay1 a link that takes her to a Rock Astley video for tonight’s #bcedchat every playlist needs a rick-roll event....!
Agreed. And connects to that line I already tweeted about for the first song - “But the joke's on those who believe the system's fair!”
Cuz assessment can be a challenge to make fair. Enter the standardized tests. #BCEdChat
#bcedchat Q3 you Rick Rolled us?! Ok..Reading and writing. I might play around with all the different forms and genres, and I might mash up poems with videos and pop songs...but in the end, I'll never desert them. If I did, I'd never be able to type this.
A3. Core comp because I love them and how they support kids...parent communication because that is such a key part of understanding the whole child #bcedchat
A3: Goodness, this one is tough. Maybe @rickastley Never gonna Give you up is best connected Reading and Writing in that we are not going to "give you up" when we continue to have make changes in our curriculum and learning. #bcedchat
I put this one in because @ChristineYH@Teachinginthe21 and yourself demanded it! I bumped out Everybody
Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears! #bcedchat

A3: Reading and writing because this guy (I’m sure I should know him) has such a huge voice and so do our kindergartners. Their voices comes pouring out in their writing and the joy they have as they begin to read. #bcedchat
A3 parents disconnect more and more through the system; at the same rate/time we see students morale go down and a shift towards more bells and more (?) curriculum focus and parents nervous about going to the principals office because of “the good old days” #bcedchat
I'm going with parent communication. I like the empathy angle of saying to parents "Your hearts been aching but you're too shy to say it." Committing to being a steadfast partner in supporting Ss - which can first mean convincing parents you are in their corner to stay. #bcedchat
A3: Core competencies. But I have to admit that I’m “spoiled” as the visual arts ones are a lot of fun. Who doesn’t like playing with art media? #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: R & Writing. As an Eng teacher I love to teach writing, esp literary analysis. I love to teach these 2 as thinking processes.I feel it's important I gain Ss trust so I tell Ss that "I'm never gonna give...up" on them or would "desert them" on their learning journey.
A3 we always need to make sure parents know that our decisions and our doings are connected to student success and parents can/need to be part of the learning community! #bcedchat
"And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see"
seeing a connection to #corecompetencies and opportunity for student to show themselves as critical & creative thinkers who are effective communicators and personally and socially responsible

So, I went to the lyrics and this part links to an interview I just had. I infuse the cc into my teaching, but am really working on explicitly helping students to recognize them through self assessment and reflection. It’s a place of growth for me. #BCEdChat
I will happily take some credit for the rick-roll - important lessons that sometimes we have to deal with the unexpected and deal with it whether we like the “unexpected” or don’t. #bcedchat
Teamwork with parents is so important. Makes me think of the BC CASE document https://t.co/mRls26vBTw. Very helpful for engaging in truly meaningful engagement with families. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4 Lunch Time. Given the way the song traipses through so many tempo changes and slams styles together...the way it has such highs (little high) and lows (little lows) I'd say lunchtime. It's all over the place, freedom, and a smorgasbord of humanity
Love this - ‘being a steadfast partner’.
So essential we honour our students’ first teachers and let them know we want to walk with them to support their VIP! #BCEdChat
A4 I like the bohemian rhapsody that can be lunch - starts one way (eating or playing) and then just when it feels “right” the tempo changes and *bang* we are doing the opposite - both are good but different (and sometimes feel you just gotta get right outta here!) #bcedchat
Q4A4 writing report cards. There is no escaping the dreaded comments and agonizing marks for kids. And for my school, at least, the feared parent backlash if their kid is not praised to the parents level of standard. #bcedchat
A4: Lunch time and leaving the oasis of the staffroom when the bell rings:
"Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth" (of afternoon classes)
#bcedchat
#Bcedchat sherida here chiming in late! A4: Report Cards! The anxiety and fear associated with these sometimes. That song has that kind of jittery, anxious world-is-ending quality
A4: #bohemianRhapsody connects to Lunch Time in that it is so eclectic and includes some violence, joining in, and of course supporting all our students "will not let you go" and "I'm just a poor boy from a boy family" is about loving all our students. #bcedchat
Bohemian Rhapsody also is about the art of teacher big- knowing when to speed up, knowing when to slow down. The ebb and flow of a school day, a lesson, a term, a year... #bcedchat
A4: Classroom management based on the line “anyway the wind blows.” You never know what external factors are affecting your students at any given time. Classroom management is more than dealing with behaviours, it’s about being a steady support in your students lives. #bcedchat
#BCEdChat A4: Definitely classroom management: "easy come easy go," because I try to roll with punches & "sometimes sends shivers down my spine" because when great CM happens it feels great! Then there are those days that it is a "monstrosity" lol!
A4- I am going to agree with lunch time some of the drama that we can see on playgrounds is almost operatic and the tempo can change quickly. #bcedchat
A4 Lunch time conversations around staffroom table:
"Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
No escape from reality
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters"
#bcedchat
It’s why I like watching videos with my class - sometimes classic cartoons, sometimes what the latest obsession of what a student is (rocky and bullwinkle are oddly popular) and sometimes wins/fails and how cars are jerks - need previews but leads to fun lunches #bcedchat
"And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see"
seeing a connection to #corecompetencies and opportunity for student to show themselves as critical & creative thinkers who are effective communicators and personally and socially responsible

A5: A-ha! It is all about mirrors, alternate spaces and running from "bad guys", while 'talking away' when you 'don't know what to say'. , so it reminds me of when I first started teaching. I really felt like a 'fake' #bcedchat
A5 the endless cycle of layoffs/rehires. I have worked at 6 schools and taught grades 4-7....I am moving one more time. I feel a little like Mary poppins...the lyrics of this song also seem to fit. At this point I just want roots. #BCEdChat
Q5:Take on me means hold onto me. So the only thing I can come up with is that I need Ss to trust me when they learn and go into the unknown. I am not going to let go and will be there when they need it. #bcedchat
Q5 Working to connect with and honour all types of learners...introvert, extrovert, kinaesthetic, visual.
Sometimes students think they can push educators away...but we have staying power to take them on irregardless! #bcedchat
A5 sometimes it feels like there is a big difference begeeen black & white and what’s in colour...and how do you know who’s hand you choose to take is the right one? #bcedchat
A5: Obvious answer... the drawings! ✏️ A little deeper is the the take on me philosophy. I negotiate the curriculum with my Grade 8s so we become co-learners rather than me remaining solely as the “expert.” #bcedchat
And by fake, I mean, playing the part of a teacher, not necessarily being one. So I was "taking on" the part of teacher. Luckily, that was 30 years ago, and I've learned so much from my amazing tweeps! #bcedchat
A5 Hmmm... For me, its the video that links--the blurring btwn reality (the diner scene...) and story (the comic she's reading). Story is a key component in my teaching. lessons, the entire arc of the course...it's the art of story--All art lies it's way to the truth. #bcedchat
A5: Taking risks in the classroom, trying something new, being brave and vulnerable (Brene Brown) “I’ll be stumbling away, slowly learning that life is ok, say after me, it’s no better to be safe than sorry.” #bcedchat
A5:The way this song makes me think of my practice is that this whole exercise is stretching me out of my comfort zone & stretching my creativity & I feel I’m coming up short & it is making me think of my students & how they must feel at times. Glad it’s happening. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A5: Because it's not really about math. It's about "slowly learning that life is ok." That mistakes are going to be made and it's not the end of the world because this class is about REASSESSMENT and demonstrating growth and learning.
Q5: Reminds me of beginning of the year committee sign up "Take on me, Take me on" :) In my own practice it makes me think of my goal of being a life long learner, being inspired to try something new, following my passions, & collaborating with colleagues. #bcedchat
#bcedchat Song 5 “Take On Me” this is the balance between curricular competencies and core competencies” - struggle to teach content when you have to build relationship first. Also, that commitment you make in your heart to the student who puts up walls
What's so memorable about this song is the video. I see our work - and the work of leaders - as innovating, iterating, stretching our imagination and then bringing to life those ideas that inspire, ignite, invite Ss and Ts into deep learning together. #bcedchat
The beginning of the video reminds me of how we often get on a "treadmill" going faster & faster to get through the day and the year and how it's important to stop & reflect on our "why"and our "purpose" #bcedchat
A5: It connects to me with how quickly I feel each day and week passes- when the song says I will be gone in a day or two. With all the things I have to remember connects to my sticky note lists that I always have going to remember what I want to get done or bring in. #bcedchat
#bcedchat this did not make the playlist:
My Heart Will Go On - Recorder By Candlelight by Matt Mulholland https://t.co/GcRHWCay8W
You can thank me later.
Look up Matt Mulholland...you will not regret it.
A6: Aretha's Respect connects with me around what I do is not about money, power, or control, it is about working with students to become citizens that make a difference. I want them to make that "difference". #bcedchat
Q6 Respect song connects with my practice because of how I work to create a caring and positive classroom community rooted in SEL. We name, and nurture respect, caring, kindness all year #bcedchat
A6- how central respect is to my teaching. Respect of students, parents and staff. We are all on the same. team and if we can remember that we can get so much more done. #bcedchat
A6: #BCEdChat I want my admin /colleaguesto take the time 2 understand me, my methods,&my practice. Respect is paramount to motivation & selfworth as a teacher. We work so hard & a kudos from a T or admin is a life breath. I think that's why I tweet & share. I like the ✅
A6 still remember my first true experience with the “Queen of Soul” was her performance in the Blues Brothers - making it clear that in any relationship, to be successful there has to be mutual respect #bcedchat
A6: RESPECT- great song choice. I say this goes all the way around in all directions. Teachers to students, students to parents, parents to administrators, admin to teachers, teachers to parents... we are all better off giving and receiving respect. #bcedchat
A6: Always ready with a good gif during #bcedchat:
"What you want
Baby, I got it
What you need
Do you know I got it"
Loving opportunities to connect beyond classroom and geographic boundaries: #weareallBCed
A6: Not wanting to be controversial but this is what I ask for when I read negative press about teachers or when my input is not requested by those in government positions. #bcedchat
So true @technolandy - same goes for people in leadership roles. Everybody needs to be authentic & true to who they are & their own leadership and/or teaching "style" #bcedchat
To build on this: leaders' responsibility is to let Ts know they are appreciated, and to elevate and share stories when Ss go and do great things - it uplifts all! That's the R-E-S-P-E-C-T we crave. Don't need job to be easier, just need "propers when we get home." #bcedchat
A7 #bcedchat Staff Meetings= "Crosseyed and Painless", Talking Heads:
"Facts are simple and facts are straight
Facts are lazy and facts are late
Facts all come with points of view
Facts don't do what I want them to"
https://t.co/jCn82xUNYW
This song connects for me to staff meetings. Those mythical creatures of making the perfect meeting with all the 'other animals' in our meeitngs.... https://t.co/K5SxUGDyQY#bcedchat
A6- how central respect is to my teaching. Respect of students, parents and staff. We are all on the same. team and if we can remember that we can get so much more done. #bcedchat
