#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
right. but every other question already assumes a specific answer to the previous one. Q2 assumes the answer to Q1 is "yes." This is not a template for discussion. It's a lesson where what the questioner has to say must be understood. #satchat
Good morning chatters! Happy Saturday! Excited to talk about SEL and learn together this morning! Susan, instructional coach, Loudoun County VA #satchat
Hi @TheBradCurrie Thank you for asking me to lead #satchat this morning, Maureen Devlin, 5th grade teacher in Wayland, MA Can't wait to learn with #satchat collaborators.
A1: absolutely #SEL should be a priority. Self-awareness, self-regulation, interacting with adults and peers are all the backbone of education, and #SEL helps kids learn the skills they need to engage in those behaviors positively. #Satchat#allin4Nb
Good morning chatters! Happy Saturday! Excited to talk about SEL and learn together this morning! Susan, instructional coach, Loudoun County VA #satchat
I viewed the classified report from House Intel relating to the FBI, FISA abuses, the infamous Russian dossier, and so-called "Russian collusion." What I saw is absolutely shocking.
This report needs to be released--now. Americans deserve the truth. #ReleaseTheMemo
Good to see everyone / the govt sleeps, the weather is all over the map, but #satchat still sustains the synergy and positivism of Educators everywhere - like sunrise! @lookforsun
A1 A priority of the priority? I think a good teacher does model and/or provides opportunities for students then to act/express themselves properly, but I'm not sure it should be "the" priority. #satchat
A1 Of course #SEL needs to be a priority in schools. The L is for learning, and that’s our purpose. As for the S and E, if students don’t figure out how they want to relate to other people and their own feelings, they’ll have trouble in any other arena of their lives.
#satchat
A1: As I recently wrote in @EdWeekTeacher, our schools must reflect the technological realities outside, while still keeping empathy, compassion, & the best parts of humanity at the heart of #education. This is our path to a prosperous & peaceful society for our children #satchat
A1: #sel absolutely needs to be both embedded in the curriculum and explicitly taught and modeled. Learning is social and emotional needs can get in the way #satchat
A1: yes. I have way too many students who lack basic elements of emotional health and understanding. I want kids who can understand the concept of empathy #satchat
A! SEL is an important component of what we do. Social curriculum and academic curriculum are firmly intertwined. How we interact with those around us, learning to learn, and knowing ourselves is just as important as literacy and numeracy. #SatChat#elemchat
#satchat A1 Social emotional learning should be addressed in all schools at all levels. The increased use of technology and online presence has diminished the effort but it must be integrated.
A1: Absolutely! We are preparing students to thrive in a rapidly changing world, not to just jump through academic hoops. https://t.co/u0vk831fxf#satchat
A1: Absolutely. At @OConnellHS and at Catholic schools, the focus on "Educating The Whole Person" is written into the very fabric of our mission statement. We're not simply teaching content. We're using content to teach PEOPLE. #satchat
A1: Ss need to learn how to collaborate, problem-solve, & communicate w/ each other. This is learned through SEL so I believe it is very important. #satchat
A1: Social emotional learning should be a priority in schools. It's a part of growing up that some S's don't get depending on their home env't. It's a part of building an amazing school culture! #satchat
A1. SEL should always be present when we're working with students..Can we teach it? I think we get better with building Relationships with our kids each day #satchat
A1: As the development of caring, trusting relationships lies at the centre of truly ‘successful’ learning experiences, SEL needs to be a formal and informal part of the teaching/learning experiences across all schools. #satchat
I believe the priority of schools is to provide a robust education in the humanities & sciences filled with opportunities that allows the student to develop critical thinking skills and determine the course of passion for their lives #satchat
A1 SEL is a part of everyday life. Kids need those skills as much as others and learn them from various sources. They have different implications at various levels of development for Ss. #satchat
A1. I believe SEL has to be a fundamental, foundational, essential, component of children’s learning. We’ve come sooo far in our understanding of whole child development. We have the power to make it as important or more than content acquisition #Satchat
A1: #SEL MUST be a priority in schools, especially in schools with a large at-risk population.. Ss need strategies to manage emotions and build positive relationships #satchat
A1) Yes it’s a part of educating the whole child. If students aren’t ready emotionally to learn there is very little teacher can do to teach them. #satchat
A1: Here's an interesting article about the importance of SEL in schools.
Social Emotional Learning Should Be a Priority, WEF Says https://t.co/4xzuOOTYJw via @EdNewsorg#satchat
A1 What did we do in the past, Francesca, that we can bring back--I'm thinking a greater focus on the integrated unit which included SEL. Ideas? #sel#satchat
Absolutely #sel needs to be a component of our teaching, For most students it can be modeled and embedded but for some it must be explicitly taught #satchat
Q1. SEL should be a top priority in Schools. Educators & admin. Should work tirelessly to ensure all Ss are growing socially and emotionally- these are the skills that will help them find THEIR success when older #satchat
A1 If we want to ensure that all children are ready to deeply learn for success in life, they will need SEL competencies, not just academic knowledge and skills, SEL is essential curriculum #satchat
A1 Absolutely! Social-emotional safety is just as important as physical safety. Our students need 2 B comfortable in order to learn & it’s our responsibility to ensure this #satchat
A1 I absolutely believe that SE learning needs to be a priority in our schools and it needs to start early. It is a critical part of educating the whole child and helping them become successful in facing challenges. #satchat@lookforsun
A1 Casel's definition makes me think SEL shouldn't be *a* priority, rather *the* priority as highlighted skills below are essential dominoes to triggering subsequent academic learning. #satchat
1A) SEL opportunities are an absolute need in our schools today. The lack of this due to "other priorities" moved to the top, has had a great impact on the whole learning community. #satchat
A priority? No. A piece of the big picture? OF COURSE!! Much of it can be accomplished through modeling. How often have we seen students without empathy or other SE skills/characteristics only to meet parents who are also without. Nature/nurture. #satchat
A1: Absolutely! Our students need to learn how to resolve conflict, manage their emotions, and show empathy just as much as they need to know how to read and write. Perhaps even more so. #satchat
A1 SEL is essential for student learning and development in the classroom. They need to feel safe and open to sharing thoughts and communicate with their peers in order to be successful #satchat
A1: Undoubtedly! It doesn’t matter what career path Ss will head down. It matters that we all to learn to speak the language of humanity because we are in the business of people #satchat
#satchat Q1- Absolutely! SEL is the base for cognitive functioning. When emotions are elevated in a neg way it becomes difficult for humans to learn in a lasting way. Social connection has also been shown to increase learning. #Relationshipsmatter
A1: For far too long we have focused on accountability and truly leaving children behind. We have a moral responsibility to teach the whole child and stellar teachers do this naturally. However, we need to do it systemically. #satchat
A1. It is our moral obligation to make it a priority. When you teach the mind and forget to grow the heart. You may end up w/ intelligent people that lack a passion for serving others and making the world around them better. #satchat
A1: SEL is ABSOLUTELY a priority! My co-teacher and I make sure to plan (sometimes it just happens also) time for activities/discussions that allow kids to build on their SEL skills and it has been so worth it!#satchat
A1: When students better understand their emotions and the ones of others, conflict is likely to occur and more focus on learning can take place. #satchat
A1 absolutely! We are molding a child’s future, we are preparing them for 7 days a week not just the 5 day work week. If we don’t address their SEL needs first it makes the academic needs harder to reach, especially in early Elementary #satchat
A1.2: Through a SEL program implemented with integrity, children learn school is a caring, safe place and build the foundation for a caring society #satchat
A1 Absolutely! If Ss are not healthy social/emotionally how can we expect them to maximize learning? What is it that we want for our Ss and children as they become adults? Happy, kind, creative, good people, yet how much time to we take teaching these skills in School? #satchat
A1 SEL improves learning by 11 percentile points, it increases prosocial behaviors (such as kindness, sharing, and empathy), improves student attitudes toward school, reduces depression & stress among students #satchat#IncludED@JKrownapple
A1: #SEL should be a high priority in all schools across all levels. As educators we should all be engraining kids to be resilient, kind, and empathetic... not to be robots. #satchat
A1: yes, many of our students come in some form of trauma. Being a support system and showing them its okay to have feelings, how to talk about those feelings, how to express those feelings is all part of holistic education. Learning matters but cant happen w/o the heart
#satchat
A1 Yes SEL will be a priority and it already is. I've said this before, even with our best instructional practices, students won't be experience deep transfer of learning until their SE needs are met #satchat
A1: Um do fish swim?! A big fat YES it is a priority. When Ss are not available for learning, when we don't focus on all aspects of child development, doesn't matter the academic curriculum, teaching and learning just don't happen! #satchat
A1 Students also need the social skills necessary to engage in the learning community and connect with the academic content. Learning is a social act. #satchat
A1 social Emotional Learning is a part of learning ... what constitutes “priority”? Having a special assembly or special lesson plans for SEL ... not necessarily a fan of that. #satchat
A1: All quality, caring educators know that if a student isn't in a good place SE then learning can't happen. SEL is KEY to making sure kids are successful in all aspects of their lives. #satchat
I end our staff nuts and bolts each week with the words of my friend @gunnellAP- Take care of the kids. Take care of each other. Take care of yourself. #satchat
A2: @grice_htsd CAUGHT YOU CARING! Ss and Ts can nominate Ss when they've been "caught caring" - promotes the idea of building positive relationships and making good decisions. #satchat
A1: Social and emotional learning should absolutely be a part of schools and classrooms. Too often in life we forget that we are all human (kids included). Before we can grow in content knowledge, we need to grow as people! #satchat
A1: As an aspiring teacher, I think SEL is extremely important. Students need these skills mentioned in Q1 their entire lives - no matter what they chose to pursue. I believe it’s important to make this a priority. #satchat
Every morning we begin with a morning meeting. I share with my students that in that circle we practice the skills to be great people AND learners. How do we give a compliment, how to accept a compliment, h0w to ask questions, how to think critically....#satchat#KidsDeserveIt
A2: Learning in schools should be for more than passing test & quizzes. The more we can give Ss the opportunity to do good for others, the more we allow them to develop #epathy and #compassion. We want them to see that they can affect positive change on their world. #satchat
A2: our school gathers together once a month (all grades) to have a meal. We deliberately challenge students to commune with one another (i.e. put down their phones and talk with each other) #satchat
I’ve said this for years! Our #1 job is student safety. SEL is a part of this. I can teach coding tomorrow, but today I’ll ensure everyone feels safe & secure in my class #satchat
A2: Since I work with T's in a SpEd population, our students often need strategies in the this area more than most S's. SEL, Executive functioning and Self Regulation can support them as a person, not just a learner. #UDL#satchat
Community service requirements. 40+ years of #SuperDance raises $25k + each year for @CF_Foundation. Counseling services. Whole school Masses, pep rallies, speakers, assemblies. #satchat
A2: Disciple can play a key role in school culture- one way is teaching S’s self-awareness through preventive Justice programs as we have and through consequences learn to become a better person for others #satchat
A2: Restorative Practices are a great framework for building community and for responding to challenging behavior through authentic dialogue, coming to understanding, and making things right. #satchat
A2. One way I promote SEL is through honest, open dialogue. When we make mistakes let’s talk about them, let’s put them out on the table and have a open conversation about it, Ss love honesty and someone who cares #satchat
A1: what good is knowledge if you can’t communicate it effectively / respectfully debate someone who needs the knowledge? What good are skills if you can’t apply them as part of a team in today’s collaborative workplaces? SEL = Life Skills. #satchat
A2 @Tabschools is individually child/family focused; our goal is to create the environment that all stakeholders want to be a part of. Follow our hashtag #tigerstrong and I think you'll see how SEL is in our fabric #satchat
A2 Instead of having a "To-do" list on the board for students to work on while I am monitoring the halls, allow them to sit in groups, relax, talk to each other or just take a break. Why keep the academic stress up every min. a kid is in school? #satchat
A1 my job is to help each student find the best path for their future, that includes being the best person they can be in every way includengball that SEL entails, #satchat
A2 We have built time in the schedule for morning meeting where Ss engage in responsive classroom practices and character ed. Ss can practice these skills every day and learn how to interact with each other. #satchat
A2: Being positive, greeting and listening to excited children, helping teachers realize what a wonderful impact they have each day on the children of the school and community #satchat
A2: In our Kindergarten class, we provide SEL lessons and activities daily...we make use of puppets like Impulsive Puppy and Slow Down Snail to assist with the learning. We have observed improved social and emotional interactivity among our students. #satchat
Those who feel the joy that comes from doing good for others continue to look for more ways to do good for others. It's a positive feedback loop - it snowballs. We need to give student more opportunities to use learning for this purpose. #satchat
A2 Some ways to promote social-emotional learning: Notice & describe behaviors. Debrief decisions. Foster dialogue. Reserve space for reflection. Explore what-ifs. Include role-play scenarios. #satchat
A2. We have advisory period to build relationships, service activities and random acts of kindness to teach empathy and are encouraging mindfulness to promote self care. #satchat
A2. We work on social emotion work through @shawnachor 🍊🐸 Happiness Advantage and The Leader in Me work to build student engagement in our schools and classrooms. #Satchat
A1. Intelligence, creative, collaborative, communicative, passionate...all good things, but w/o kindness, grace, forgiveness, service, honest...the first set of traits can be used for terrible things. There are many evil Pp w/ the 1st set of traits. #satchat
A2 One way I integrate #SEL is by helping students create work portfolios, not based on extrinsic definitions of success, but instead based on their own values: what makes school a source of meaning and vitality for them?
#satchat
A2. We guarantee Advisory every day for our S’s. And nope, it’s not a study hall. We give trusted adult surveys to kids and act on them. Every early out Day is ALL-SEL, ALL-DAY #satchat
That's one of the books I have in my stack to read! I've seen morning meetings become a huge part of student driven classes and personalized learning. #satchat@responsiveclass
#satchat A2 For my Pre-Ts we spend time developing soft skills to provide a structure for understanding the importance of emotional social skills in the classroom.
A1: Not sure how SEL gets compartmentalized (nor should it be); you can infuse classroom with SEL without making it feel like singing Kumbaya at Woodstock. Not sure folks realize this. #satchat
A2 Through personal conversations, small group conversations, classroom conversations, and assemblies. And it needs to take place as often as possible. #satchat
A2: SEL is taught through a specific curriculum, but it is also in the teachable moments scattered throughout the day when we pause, we identify, we process, and we move forward. #satchat
It starts with us model good SE habits. And for many adults, more than we'd like to admit, those conditions don't exist. How much time are people in general allowed to develop happiness, kindness, creativity, and goodness in our busy society? #satchat
A2: One way - I started out this month by explaining to my students why my #Oneword2018 is EMPATHY. My students then came up with their #oneword2018. A great way to model for them that SEL matters. #satchat
A2 we have prioritized SEL through @responsiveclass in elem and its companion #developmentaldesign in middle and introducing a freshman seminar w integrated SEL next year #satchat
A2: Proud to be co-designing a secondary project that incorporates a House System for creating more connections / community and authentic lessons integrated into the curriculum that support the CASEL standards. Great work! #satchat
A2 Fortunate to have an individual who oversees SEL to provide us with research and guidance. Daily morning meetings and a thematic curriculum that connects all our learning, academic and social, throughout the day. #satchat
A2: It starts with adults modeling SEL skills, also at the elem level...we have to do a lot of direct instruction, Ss don't just magically learn self awareness, responsible decision making, etc on their own #satchat
The most important thing a Teacher can do requires no PD, reading, or permission. And that thing is LOVE! Love the kids in your care unapologetically with Kindness, Patience, and Grace! #edchat
A2 Currently we are working with @LetStudentsLead. We have develop SEL lessons to support students during unstructured time, created buddy classes, and gave choice for indoor recess. We also continue to focus on #WCBPRIDE#satchat
A2 all our Ss give tours to our outside visitors; each have an opportunity to interview guests on green screen; our thematic units are design thinking based #satchat
A2 I feel that setting procedures and modeling how to work effectively in groups from the get-go is important to demonstrate how to listen and interact with all peers (not only their friends) so all students are open to sharing thoughts and ideas. #satchat
A1 social emotional learning needs to be a priority. In kindergarten, it’s the first thing that’s taught to students & should continue. We can teach academics but if students don’t know how to effectively deliver their message & work w/ others; they won’t be productive. #satchat
A1. It is, especially in the lower grades. But, it is primarily a parental responsibility. When parents fall down on this, we get adults like Donald Trump. #satchat
A2: Our SLPs are leading the way in providing strategies, modeling and bringing awareness to high need times like Fieldtrips, special events, collaboration-social learning tasks and ….(fill-in-the-blank) #SEL#satchat
A2.2. We also adopted the building wide theme of Freedom and use SEL as the avenue to explore Freedom which opens interdisciplinary studies to factor in. It’s Awesome! #satchat
A2 also working on mindfulness strategy integration for adults and children and strategic intervention w chronic stress kids SEL is key in that #satchat
A2: adopt an ELA and math curriculum with SEL support embedded in the routines and practices!
One favorite thing about the @openupresources curricula is that collaborative work, S discourse, and other SEL musts are actively built into materials. #satchat
A2: One way - I started out this month by explaining to my students why my #Oneword2018 is EMPATHY. My students then came up with their #oneword2018. A great way to model for them that SEL matters. #satchat
A2 Instead of having a "To-do" list on the board for students to work on while I am monitoring the halls, allow them to sit in groups, relax, talk to each other or just take a break. Why keep the academic stress up every min. a kid is in school? #satchat
A2 I teach US History ... always about Do you care ... why should you care ... does it matter to you ... tying in the personal aspects to History to understand why events happen. #satchat
A2 Model healthy SE thinking and strategy, makes sure I prioritze the SEH of my Ts so in turn they can help Ss , interested in expanding mindfulness activities in my District, make it part of how we do business! #satchat
A2: I do not have my own classroom (yet), however the classrooms I have been in have promoted SEL through literature and discussion, small group work, and a lot of problem solving. #satchat
Exactly...if we grow intelligence w/o SEL, you risk not arming them w/ the tools to use their intelligence and gifts to have a positive impact.#satchat
A2 In history class, we take events & break them down to the problems that we have address on an interpersonal level. When teaching WWI, conflict that led to it are same as we can see in the lunchroom just on larger scale w/more dire consequences #satchat
A2: One way - I started out this month by explaining to my students why my #Oneword2018 is EMPATHY. My students then came up with their #oneword2018. A great way to model for them that SEL matters. #satchat
A2: Morning Meeting, goal setting, whiteboard messages, self-assessment of behavior, & we also are putting up a new bulletin board about spreading kindness throughout the community w/all Ss ideas #satchat
A2 I work a lot on “math talk” and embedded I. that is how we give positive feedback and constructive criticism to one another Sometimes giving them a “word bank” helps those struggling #satchat
A2: I work mostly w/ Ts now but on those happy moments when I do work w/ Ss I like for them to reflect on what they have learned, want them to understand that it's ok to make mistakes & have to work hard to succeed. I want them to be creative in the learning process. #satchat
LOVE this One of the true gifts of a fully gamified classroom is that there are tons of side quests that can be offered to enrich SEL. TCAM = race and equity. Hemingway unit = PTSD volunteer opportunities. The Awakening = women's shelter, etc. etc. #gamification#satchat#xplap
For those asking, the Republicans only have 51 votes in the Senate, and they need 60. That is why we need to win more Republicans in 2018 Election! We can then be even tougher on Crime (and Border), and even better to our Military & Veterans!
A2: As an ELA teacher, my first inclination is to give them the actual phrases they need to speak positively about themselves and others. Sometime Ss simply don’t know how to say something #insteadofthatsaythis#growthmindset#satchat
A2 I love using @YouTube, we analyze how the characters’ emotions change due to the kindness of just one person, I tell S’s the greatest achievement you will ever get is making someone else’s life better while you make your own life better #satchathttps://t.co/dUV4sQ3ZVq
A2 Hi Liz, Sometimes I find that school structures hinder optimal #SEL in schools. I really want to see school restructure so that we can model good character better. #satchat
A2 Our school mantra is MRHS is our "Home Away From Home" where EVERYONE is Important. Our motto this year is "620" 620 students & they ALL are important-we show them through our actions. #satchat
A2 and we established @ACPSSEADTeam to support up SEL in elem schools w higher risk factors - “social emotional academic development” support for staff and kids #satchat
A2 We've noticed that some Ss dont' play well TOGETHER. Developing games, explaining rules, and then following those rules leads to conflict. #PBIS is our vehicle for teaching those behaviors so they develop good relationship skills. #satchat
Senators were negotiating in the chamber right up until midnight, but there was no compromise to be found. But as soon as the deadline passed, the blame game began. https://t.co/n5E1FVXels
A2: As a school counselor everything I do is based off #SEL. As a school we focus on it through our Advisory program as well. However, empathy, kindness, compassion, grit, relationships, etc could be intertwined through all classes each day. #satchat
A2: @AnnexLincoln we had an awesome team building day (hope to do more). In 2018 we started “SEL kickoff days” to begin a monthly theme we throughout the month! Ts create their own variations based on suggested activities compiled by SEL committee. #satchat#allin4nb
SEL is woven in everyday ... morning meetings, building empathy through discussions about characters in novels or the implications of historical events, restorative practices ...the list goes on #satchat
The @ELEducation K–5 Language Arts Curriculum is especially intentional about SEL, with very intentional materials and protocols designed to help students develop habits of character while growing as readers, writers, and thinkers. ❤️
Incredible #wholechild resource. #satchat
Unfortunately many Parents don't have the skills or understand how to teach the skills. As a K teacher I provide my parents with resources (my own) on how to teach these skills. They often thank me and say they didn't know how. T the whole S by including the family. #satchat
So true! We practice mindfulness in our classroom and we also have a T that holds breathing times on different mornings for us! It’s nice to for Ts to take that time #satchat
A2: we have 3 groups. A young ladies & young men that meet once a week to talk. We do our best to have specific topics ready but let our kids take it where it needs to go. We also have a group of hs ss that arr going to work w/ele ss through a program called say hello.
#satchat
I couldn’t agree more and something we at state level talk about in every mtg with and at @ISBESupt. Whole child, whole school, whole community. When we create safe spaces like we are in IL schools - leaning explodes. #satchat
A2:My school has monthly character traits that we promote and use to teach social awareness & relationship skills. I like to spend as much time as needed helping my students become more compassionate & better listeners. #satchat
I know what you mean, but "common language" could be misinterpreted--we have at least 25 languages spoken in or building, probably double that. #satchat
Group work is part of 2018 classroom protocol and in that format, it is imperative that students are able to talk about nonacademic content before they get to the academic. Relationship building! Not to mention you can have academic discourse about ice cream flavors #satchat
I do the same. When I was a rookie teacher, I had privilege to share a classroom w/English T that did this all the time. At 1st I was annoyed w/long winded answers, then I realized he was giving me a blueprint how to think through & react to a question #satchat
Yes - we began with @responsiveclass almost 11 years ago and it’s operational in all 15 elem schools all classes but tremendous commitment to development time annually #satchat
A2: Focus on connections, healthy living, mindfulness, kindness, and recognizing that teachers need nurturing as much as our students do. Wellness and Growth Mindsets for ALL. #satchat
⚠️ The new left/MSM narrative that Trump has a heart problem may be more than wishful thinking by haters. In the 1970’s the CIA developed a top secret poison dart gun that gives targets HEART ATTACKS without a trace. We could be witnessing the setup. https://t.co/jPRPYC17qw
the Deep State is on the ropes.. the Alliance aka White Hats got Trump's back.. if they even dared attempt this.. the entire Cabal would be taken down.. and Assange would release the motherload.. but it can't hurt to remain vigiliant.. they are capable of anything
A3: Recognizing how it can and should become a natural part of the learning culture & doing the work to make that happen! Start with awareness #SEL#satchat
A3 If SEL = special activities/assemblies, Ss learn what to say to get through it and behave well when they think it “counts.” Instead of telling students WHAT to value (and then reinforce compliance), let’s help them figure out HOW to enact their own values at school.
#satchat
A3: Lack of understanding from those who see almighty content as king. SEL doesn't drain time away from the curriculum, it ENHANCES it. It's another lens through which your content can become enriched, alive, and REAL. #satchat
Awesome, we have Wellness Wednesdays at our school, staffcan wear workout gear, we share wellness tips for all, our K and 1 Ss also have a Wellness class w/the guidance counselor to focus on SEL skills #satchat
So true! I wish everyone would understand that in the classroom we are teaching students so much more than the content we were assigned & that sometimes thing that might seem "irrelevant" to the content reaps great rewards for the students #satchat
A3: As #bigdata & #highstakestesting have pushed #education towards competition & ranking of Ss, Ts, schools, & systems, content and knowledge have risen in prominence at the expense of SEL, critical thinking and other less easily quantified (but more important) metrics. #satchat
A2 Lissa, I'm curious about how we can change school structures, schedules, and roles to better invite this kind of teaching/learning/nurturing. Ideas? #satchat
Our district SEL team is working on creating a better SEL district website and parent outreach for SEL support. We want this to be community-based, not just in the school! #satchat
Q3. Everyone not seeing eye to eye on how to handle conflict, how to address learning situations, and how to have empathy for our own Ss, often times our frustration leads us to make poor choices in the moment. REACT VS RESPOND #satchat
A3: SEL needs to be integrated into daily practice, not set aside to be taught as a unit. With that in mind, the only barrier to "teaching" SEL is personal intentions. #satchat
A3: lack of understanding, implementation (how do I do that), and constant testing. Weeks are lost to it which doesnt mean you forget about but some its not consistent.
#satchat
A2 ~ When addressing behavior, we spend time discussing how things could have been done differently & try to have Ss think about how they will respond to similar incidents in the future. We have also slowly begun implementing the RULER approach. #satchat
Also know that good work is coming from national commission on social emotional academic learning w support from a fab team of practitioners at every level of education @AspenSEAD#satchathttps://t.co/k48ZpNHRov
Sometimes you just don't know what you don't know OR they are scared to ask for help. I don't judge, but provide resources so we are teaching the same strategies w/in and out of the classroom. We are all here for the same thing- our littles. #satchat
A3. Time during the school day is stretched thin and it can be challenging to “fit in” time for SEL. Luckily in my district, it has been a focus and priority #satchat
A2: In middle school, a lot of SEL happens in the small conversations you have w/ kids about social "mistakes". Explaining why the behavior isn't the best choice, helping them find a better one, always ending w/ believing in them - you know next time they will do better. #satchat
RT @lpijanowski: A2: Focus on connections, healthy living, mindfulness, kindness, and recognizing that teachers need nurturing as much as our students do. Wellness and Growth Mindsets for ALL. #satchat
RT @lookforsun: RT @lpijanowski: A2: Focus on connections, healthy living, mindfulness, kindness, and recognizing that teachers need nurturing as much as our students do. Wellness and Growth Mindsets for ALL. #satchat
RT @PrincipalGarden: @MsShute@EMercedLearning Awesome, we have Wellness Wednesdays at our school, staffcan wear workout gear, we share wellness tips for all, our K and 1 Ss also have a Wellness class w/the guidance counselor to focus on SEL skills #satchat
A3: T's can sometimes get sucked into the required learning that they don't make time for SEL. Some may not even know it's important or know how to integrate it into their daily lessons. #satchat
And this is why schools need to focus on their instructional efforts and blend important components into that focus. If we want happy, healthy, & productive #ProblemSolvers what are the 2-3 key things that will get us there? #SEL#literacy#satchat
A3 in my previous district the Pacing Guide was apparently written by God and was implemented w/ fundamental fervor, in general, if you don’t have the S in the center of planning then that will block SEL, so if test scores are paramount, program implementation, etc #satchat
A2: Teaching SEL is in both the micro (modeling how to listen) and the macro (whole school initiatives). Proud of our school for “Wellness Wednesdays” a chance for students to decompress #satchat
A3: not to use this as a negative, but time- as T’s & admin agendas get in the way- curriculum. Need to change mindsets & thinking to embed ideals w/i the instruction to build capacity for SEL. It becomes our only way #satchat
A2: Care for your teachers! Healthy teachers build healthy students. We live in a stressful world. Often, we need to take time to practice what we preach with the adults in our schools first. Agree? What do you see as challenges for staff? stress, health, mindset? #satchat
A3 Academic success can be altered when students feel uneasy and do not feel they can speak their mind and make connections. #SEL is absolutely essential #satchat
3: Rigid frameworks which inadvertently foster an opposing school culture such as: punitive codes of conduct, drill kill curriculum guides, and dated or unnecessary state mandated training #satchat
A3 Lack of flexible thinking can be a barrier to more SEL in schools. SEL doesn't have to occur "instead of" academic learning. It can occur "partnered with" the formal curriculum. Responsible Ts provide multiple opportunities for Ss to incoporate SEL in their lessons #satchat
Something else to consider about this whole "government shut down" is that @realDonaldTrump gives his pittance salary away. So... He's just letting everyone else catch up. Who wants to bet that the #governmentshutdown lasts about...
oh...
10 Days?
@taylorswift13#satchat#DoReMi
A3: Often times policies & mandates associated with standardized testing or prescribed curricula get in the way of social emotional learning! Our kids need to feel valued, respected & safe (SEL) in order to maximize learning! #satchat
A3: SEL needs to be integrated into daily practice, not set aside to be taught as a unit. With that in mind, the only barrier to "teaching" SEL is personal intentions. #satchat
A3 I just presented a PD session on the importance of play in the classroom. The number one barrier given by those in the room not to engage in play, the pressure placed on them & their students on state testing. Sad #satchat
So true! I wish everyone would understand that in the classroom we are teaching students so much more than the content we were assigned & that sometimes thing that might seem "irrelevant" to the content reaps great rewards for the students #satchat
A3: A real barrier to SEL is attitude, especially at M.S. and H.S. level. Many T's see are too content focused, and many S's see it as cheesy. #satchat
A3 Maybe that is a throwaway response but I think the social and emotional repercussions on teachers that standardized testing has definitely plays a huge part in their willingness to make #sel a priority #satchat
A3: To be honest-I think we often get so caught up in data results that we forget that there are bigger gains to make with students that aren’t wrapped up in test grades. #satchat
A3 Time, not just for more content but for conversation and unpacking the ideas and practices of being a good person and productive citizen, of hard work and empathy. Those happen slowly, with time. #satchat
A3 Sometimes Ts aren't sure where to "fit" SEL in during the day. Some Ts aren't trained in teaching social/emotional to kids. SEL needs to be an underlying thread woven all day into everything we do with Ss. #satchat
A3 perception of time - neglect SEL as core to daily learning work and you will spend far more time doing class management, discipline, and academic intervention #satchat
For me, step 1 is to make sure there is a comprehensive SEL curriculum with standards that provide guidance for Ts. SEL can be connected through literature, intentional discussions. It cannot be an add-on. #satchat
Agree, Sara. It's also important that we teach our Ss how to engage with what they hear, so that they can work through decision-making and positive problem solving with their peers #satchat
Yes. That’s my point. Are we as teachers able to keep “reality” out of our classrooms and suspend belief in order to get students to think differently.
A3 Kat, I think this occurs because educators simply don't have the time to talk about critical issues in schools. Too often faculty meetings are focused on issues of less importance. #satchat
I think it is--but we do live in a sea of unforgiving peppiness. For many of us I think the platitudes cover up the daily work of indoctrinating students.
The guards become the prisoners.... #satchat
I think it can be both. Modeling it with strategies on how S's can use it is necessary for some. Especially for those that it doesn't come naturally. I'm thinking of the SpEd kids with social issues. #satchat
Absolutely! There's no hesitation in that answer. By teaching our kids how to handle stress, anxiety, depression, and more, we're preparing them for a lifetime of personal and professional success. #Satchat
A3 Brian, that's why I believe there isn't a one-size-fits-all way to teach, T's have to be able to bring their personality and passion into the classroom. #satchat
A2 We've introduced "life and career skills" into our progress reports. We incorporate them into our lessons. Ex: "today we'll be focusing on teamwork & communication skills"; students set goals and self-assess. #satchat
An excerpt from Donald Trump's "The Art of the Deal"
"When you are the CEO of a corporation that is about to shut down, leave early Friday if you want to attend your weekend party and play golf. Let your employees figure it out. This shows leadership."
#TrumpShutdown
A3: sometimes it feels like everything! Pressure to achieve greatness in every other area of teaching and learning. Curriculum, pacing, tech integration—simply put, time. But to value other things more than SEL is an epic mistake. #satchat
A3: Our societal focus on traditional measures of achievement stand in the way along with our misguided obsession with standardized testing. @BetsyDeVosED doesn't exactly help with the situation either #satchat
I'd take it one step further and argue that compartmentalising makes it so students don't make the connection between what they are being told and what they are expected to do. #satchat
A3. I think many times SEL is not interwoven enough into the day..Listen..Build Relationships..Care..Love..and continue to also do what we do every day #satchat
A1/2: Learning often happens for students precisely because they have developed a set of social and emotional skills and habits that allows them to engage in learning #satchat
It's not that they're ineffectual, we just want everyone to use the same language. With the broader coarsening of language in society, we want to be the bulwark against it. It can't be okay for someone in power to call the opposition "loser." #satchat
The keys to successful & sustainable SEL experiences that nurture life ready learners is vertical alignment on the K-12 continuum that promotes common vocabulary & core values & skills that build upon each other! #satchat
This is a really important point. Ts need to embrace this shift and relinquish control in order to create the space for real #SEL learning to occur. #satchat
A3. I think there’s apprehension to do it “right”. I think despite the fact that T,s build solid relationships w/S’s there’s a feeling that it has to be sappy or huffy or lovey. Sometimes it does and sometimes it definitely doesn’t. Doing nothing, though, is unacceptable #satchat
A3 ~ At the secondary level, time is the greatest roadblock. Ts always feel the pressure to "get through" the curriculum and prepare Ss for the Regents exam. #satchat
A3 The scramble and desire to cover every single standard with the scope and sequence of every subject area. It can't be about content anymore. It has to be about developing exceptional people who are exceptional thinkers. #InnovatorsMindset#satchat#SEL
Like the use of the word perception here. It's important that if we prioritize, plan, and prepare for the implementation of the lesson time, there will be more positive SEL and academic impact for our Ss #satchat
Playful activities are wonderful ways to allow students to be given opportunities to involve social emotional skills. Some would say that I am just entertaining the kids, but that is such a surface answer without digging to see the depth of learning occurring #satchat
A3: We ignore (at our peril) the industrialized socialization we impose on our students through scheduling, rules, and fear ("You will starve without that diploma"). SEL invites rebellion, if done right. #satchat
One of my fav lessons to teach. Ever hear of the Cherokee poem...Two Wolves? Check it out. Could have great discussions W/ Ss https://t.co/RSBGFtJJ7k#satchat
#satchat What a timely topic. I've been thinking all night about what we do for kids and how we best support them in this area. Can't be ignore or punish.
A3: Possible barriers to SEL...’academic’ priorities become the sole priority, a culture of ‘testing’ takes over, we forget that building relationships make learning ‘work’. #satchat
A3 Any philosophy that goes against "thats the way we do things" we will face the naysayers, and Those resistant to change + ,the systems that are in place in schools..yet with a so man passionate educators who know how important this is it is becoming a reality now! #satchat
Social Emotional Learning is still viewed as a separate thing to be integrating and teaching. SE skills should be embedded in every lesson and every conversation every day. #Satchat
A3: What stands in the way of #SEL? The belief that academics & social emotional learning are mutually exclusive. The combination of the two is what truly molds kids into successful adults. #satchat
A3 Effective PD on social emotional learning and a culture of trust will bring faculty together to roll out the program. #satchat (Carol ELA consultant from Long Island here)
A3. When we look at a profile of a graduate that Districts develop for 21st century skills - social emotion skills with creativity are at the top of the list. The best way to teach them is to model them - no excuses not to teach #Satchat
A3: To be honest-I think we often get so caught up in data results that we forget that there are bigger gains to make with students that aren’t wrapped up in test grades. #satchat
A3: Many will say that demands around core subjects are an obstacle.
But it’s BC they don’t know that the latest generation of (FREE!) curricula actively builds SEL support into ELA & Math curriculum.
(Yes, Math!)
Gotta spread the word! 🌟
#satchathttps://t.co/4y314bxU2s
A2: adopt an ELA and math curriculum with SEL support embedded in the routines and practices!
One favorite thing about the @openupresources curricula is that collaborative work, S discourse, and other SEL musts are actively built into materials. #satchat
A3: The struggle is real! External influences are pulling us in too many directions. Focus on the main thing - our students. Pull hard toward learner-centered and don't allow a focus on test scores pull you back. Focus on growth and engagement - it's a win win! #satchat
Ok, America. It's time for The Great Awakening. Rise & Shine. Pray for clarity & discernment. You need the eyes to see & ears to hear what we are saying to you. You have been deceived. We all have. Tick tock.
#ReleaseTheMemo#DemocraticShutdown#QAnon#SethRich#WeThePeople
Unknown. Attaching one set of Anon interprets.
#ReleaseTheMemo#SchumerShutdown#GreatAwakening#QAnon
We have had this for a month... And we grew so used to it that we missed the significance outside of the chans.
A3: To be honest-I think we often get so caught up in data results that we forget that there are bigger gains to make with students that aren’t wrapped up in test grades. #satchat
A3 People’s reluctance for change! Starting an advisory program with Ts + Ss, starting a Gay Straight Alliance club, encouraging genuine volunteerism w/ the honor society... all includes the need to accept change #satchat
A3: Teachers feel like they lack time when teaching all the content, but when we do “brain breaks/fire circles” that help build relationships, we actually enhance learning. #satchat
A3: Schools that don't actively and intentionally include all parents in teaching SEL are going to constantly struggle to see students apply the skills we are trying to teach them. #satchat
A1/2: the school context is unique and highlights SEL more acutely than contexts - in k-5 students spend majority time with 24 kids in a room (this happens no place else) #satchat
Social Emotional needs are infinitely different than they were “when we were in school.” We have to educate ourselves and parents to best influence social emotional health for our students. #Satchat
A3. I think many times SEL is not interwoven enough into the day..Listen..Build Relationships..Care..Love..and continue to also do what we do every day #satchat
Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!
#satchat With regard to SEL, I am leery when I see it as a highly-polished, pre-packaged, "gimmicky" req'd curriculum. It is the way we act, react, and speak daily. It is the CULTURE we establish in our rooms and in our schools. It is so far from the talk ... it is the walk.
Specialized programs like @LoveInABigWorld are an AMAZING option for #educators that are looking to promote social-emotional learning in their schools. Everyone needs to be on the same page about educating the whole child. #satchat
And often these are set up for the adult convenience and not what is best for our students. I am an eternal optimist and believe we can change this, but I see it way too often. "The way we have always done it" needs to be "Let's rethink this". #satchat
A2: Meditation Monday! Plus - we check in and out every Monday/Friday talking about what’s going on in our lives at the time. We MUST integrate the belief that school is a PART of life, not outside of it. #satchat
Yes! Amen. Meeting kids emotional needs and developing compassion and understanding need to be the basis for everything we do. We need to be explicit, but SEL should be ubiquitous and invisible. Just part of the fabric of learning. #satchat
A3 The fixed mindset that discipline should be punitive. When a student gets a math problem wrong, we don’t ignore it.—we reteach so the student won’t make the same mistake. We continue to reinforce until is becomes a habit. Why is behavior any different? #satchat
A3 This is why teachers must be creative in teaching life in conjunction with the map provided to us. By building relationships with the students, we can help meet their specific needs. #satchat
When it dominates our focus as educators, it does. Obviously this differs from school to school/district or district, but it seems to be pretty nationally pervasive at this time #satchat
A4: I think it’s all about being intentional about incorporating SEL in the classroom somehow, somewhere every single day. Also, being an example/model teacher helps tremendously. #satchat
When I was younger, I spent many summers working camp. #1 thing I learned was that you dont need to be kid to love a kid. Young or older counselor didnt matter. Kids dont need someone to be goofy. They need someone to care #satchat
Modeled in the way one naturally behaves, not intentionally as part of a lesson. The truth is SEL is taught in school every day, and kids learn quickly that having power is better than being kind. And we wonder why kids bully. 🙃 #satchat
A3: I am willingly learn more on how to do this. My 1st idea would be to have a focal pt. W/I the lesson planning. Focus w/ standards based instruction and then embed SEL within. #satchat
Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!
A4: The idea of a growth mindset, especially in mathematics, is a natural fit - instill a sense of persistence and celebrate the lightbulb moments so Ss make the connection that difficult learning reaps tremendous self-reward #satchat
Exactly. Parents (generally) haven't studied child development. I have. I can't build a bridge or whatever they do. Often times they both work so time is limited. We are here as a team so I bring that knowledge to the table. They bring so many other things to the table #satchat
Yes! This is a very important, exciting evolution in the instructional materials space. I’m inspired by the #wholechild development that I see in classrooms using the @ELeducation K–5 Language Arts Curriculum. 💗 #satchat
What does prepping them for tests look like? Is this learning? We spend about 5 days total of our of 180 or so on state standardized testing. #satchat I have seen time wasted more in other ways.

A4 Turn academic tasks into opportunities for students to learn how they want to treat themselves, each other, and their learning experiences.
#satchat
A3 Chris, I think we need to talk more about our priorities and that talk has to include all stakeholders--we don't make the time to talk, solve problems together. #satchat
A4: during my last year in the classroom (7th ELA), I started every class w/a circle--greeting, quick share, quick activity. Used circles to celebrate and to correct #satchat
A4 @PosProject character strengths fit nicely when students are working cooperatively in groups, can connect to the standards! Talk about how to treat each other when learning new topics #satchat
A4 Making collaboration a part of class encourages use of social skills, recognizing mistakes are how we learn makes Ss learn how to handle feedback necessary for progress! #SatChat
A4 make SEL present in every aspect of the classroom, when I allow S’s to become physically comfortable during tests or lessons, they do better, anxiety is running rampant in kids today, brain based learning shows us how that stress kills learning #satchat
A4 We know that SEL is integral to the cooperative learning experience for our Ss. Connected with this, we must be purposeful about teaching decision making, engagement, perspective taking, and leadership to increase Ss SEL toolkit as they work with their peers #satchat
I am not disagreeing, I just think we make it out to be this thing it does not need to be, when we could just all take a deep breath and treat it for what it is. A measure that might take a week total, that is all. #satchat
A4 Connect emotions and social situations through role play learning activities. For example mock interviews with kids as both manager and applicant #satchat
A4 In SS - I can weave questions about empathy, persistence, resilience, strategy, perspective etc through historic events and through the eyes of people from different cultures/backgrounds. #satchat
A3 it take commitment! Our school district is - MRSD is committed to developing a comprehensive program that provides supports, services and programs that addresses the five core competencies of social emotional learning to all students via @Maguiremonomoy#satchat
Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!
Don't disagree, but you make it what it is in each of your classes, schools, etc. As educators we have that autonomy, even in the most micro-managed environments. #satchat

Yes! This is a very important, exciting evolution in the instructional materials space. I’m inspired by the #wholechild development that I see in classrooms using the @ELeducation K–5 Language Arts Curriculum. 💗 #satchat
A4: We start by modeling the behaviors we want to see. Set standards for students to see and to move to pond 4 as Spark in Orange Frog Experience -teach students to be the postive outlier and have others strive to demonstrate those behaviors to get there #Satchat
A4 How cannot you? All aspects of learning require SEL and academic considerations. From feeling safe to take risks to knowing how to work with a partner to sharing your thinking. #satchat
Amen! Culture is everything. Schools should customize solutions baed on the needs of their students. There is no one size fits all for curriculum so why would we thing that would be the same for SEL? I believe it should be even more personalized. #satchat
A.4 It can be as simple as starting the day fresh and asking your #students, "How do you feel today?". After school programs, advisory periods, there's so much we can do! @LoveInABigWorld#satchat
A4 Open honest discussions with Ss, embedding into Cir move away from the conformity driven activities and lesson and promote more choice, discussion and time for reflection. for our Ss #satchat
A4: This gets to culture. Teaching curriculum in isolated silos makes it hard..an add-on at best. We work hard to make our school look more like the real world, with interdisciplinary #PBL, outside mentors, etc. & #SEL is an integral component. #satchat
A4: Invest in ‘walking the speak’ of SEL, all day long as an educator, and it can become a natural part of any course or program structure. Modelling is such a powerful tool! #satchat
No, they can be both. Learned behaviors are prominent, but some, especially with Autistic S's, are because they don't have those social skills naturally. #satchat
A4 Help Ss create two goals for themselves - one academic and one SEL. Have them write these goals down. Meet with Ss to see how they are doing in reaching their goals. I'd dare to say these goals support each other in being accomplished! #satchat
Russians wouldnt care about a hastag and a memo its good old pissed off Americans, daughter of a soldier, marine wife, and mother of a soldier. democrats and media you suck, suck suck #BHACHE#SaturdayMorning#satchat
Very important point! #SEL must be grounded in the reality of the Ss and their families. Hard if there's not enough knowledge and/or respect from our schools. #satchat
A4: I went to a fully gamified classroom. Every unit has main quests (for grades/XP) & side quests (ungraded, for XP/treasure). Side quests are fun, optional, SEL enrichment tie-ins: creative projects, service, article reflections, etc. Rewards choice & curiosity! #satchat#xplap
4: 1st admin must be aboard and crystal clear. Present to the board. 2nd Invite PTO, Special Education Parent groups. 3rd Talk to coaches, physical education teachers about direct ties to their learning standards, much more to follow but 2 much to state here #satchat
What we know about the brain is that when kids feel happy, self-confident & valued (all the results of effective SEL) there are endorphins released in the system that avails them to learning & allows for maximized learning! #satchat
A4 as an early Elementary T I will always use the emotions of characters in stories to describe them, how they change, how does that make you feel? How would you feel if that happened to you? #empathy driven lessons are critical #satchat
A4: Explicitly teaching, modeling skills, identifying situations and challenges, letting students learn together, and assisting as needed. All wrapped in a restorative mindset. #satchat
A4: If kids are collaborating, creating, discussing then SEL is embedded in instruction. Provide ways to model positive collaboration; and then when they aren't getting it, the teacher is there to support (just as they do with content). #satchat
I often think that how I run my classroom would be very recognizable to the campers I had years ago since the format is similar to how I ran the evening activities when I was the recreation director. #satchat
A4 SEL should be integrated into EVERY learning intention - how can we expect students 2 learn if they are not taught how 2: persist, be empathetic, be resilient, be self aware & be mindful! #satchat#MindFuelED#ImpactTeamshttps://t.co/2XpWb8k3ye
A4: SEL can be embedded thru daily routines such as teaching Ss about perseverance or asking 4 assistance if needed. Ss have 2 work toward goals & know they have ability 2 problem solve. Respecting other Ss by listening, understanding opinions, & manage their emotions. #satchat
A4 Creating authentic engaging activities that are fun, which will naturally force every student to want to be part of a group, so that they can be involved. You can then focus your time on helping the needs you see. #satchat
A4 Connecting learning to prior knowledge is one way to open the pathways for social and emotional learning. Talk about the differing perspectives / viewpoints. Give them affirmation and credibility. #satchat
A4 Building relationships with the Ss, getting to know their strengths and needs super helpful when creating a safe environment that allows Ss to feel comfortable when taking risks! #satchat
A4: through #PBL there are opportunities for reflection, revision, collaboration, self & group management... I make sure to embed #SEL when planning the outcomes and make it clear and explicit to the Ss as well. #satchat#allin4NB
I agree, but until we come up with a better way of determining the effectiveness of our teaching and we can sell it to those in control, we can only control our attitude towards it. That stress is then put on the kids. #satchat That is my fear.

My Dear Mom, a Black American Descendant of Slaves farm girl from rural Depression-era, Jim Crow South Carolina, figured it out. I rest my case. #satchat
A4) Speaking and listening standards have been added to our state’s academic content standards. This is a start, but schools still have a long way to go. Ss must have #SEL as a prerequisite to academic learning. #satchat
Question 5: What organizations, experts, books, and other resources help you to develop your ability to promote social emotional learning in schools and with your students? #satchat
A4: Social emotional learning can be embedded into learning goals by modeling & reinforcing appropriate collaboration with others, allowing time for self-reflection, and discussing inappropriate behaviors & better choices, not just giving consequences. #satchat
A4: Begin every lesson with “something I’m still wondering” so students realize it’s ok to struggle.
End every lesson with “Before I came in here, I never knew...”. #satchat
A4 Mentor texts that highlight SEL. Allowing for time to discuss how the brain responds to new learning, adversity, and routine, and thematic curriculum that allows for Ss to be at the center and opens discussion to study people and their culture. #satchat

You're right, Jane. SS is a great subject to teach SEL to our Ss- provides many opportunities for Ss to experience learning and engage their peers in responses to events #satchat
Agreed, but in massively micromanaged environments, it is a huge uphill battle for Ts. The point is that admin should be facilitators of effective practices, not barriers to them #satchat

A4 I always mix SEL within my learning objectives. I teach #VirtualReality & Ss pick a passion project. This student built a #vr project on the Civil Rights Movement, including the story of Emmett Till. It’s all about empowerment! #satchat
A3 Personal connections through conferring is a great opportunity to focus on SEL skills - Conversations about goal setting, student interests, relating content to the student's life and engagement. Here is also a list of a few activities to support SEL #satchat
A5 @PosProject talking about the 24 character strengths that we all have and learning about these as a class. Sharing my top character strengths and the bottom strengths for areas to work on! #satchat
A4: when we created our mission &vision we said holistic education that supports social&emotional development. We bring in speakers, pd to better undrrstand our students, and daily we integrate compassion. I greet all students at the door & tell them I care about them
#satchat
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it at all! There are just some behaviors and strategies they need to be taught because it goes against their natural instincts. #satchat
Making room for & inviting all student voices lead to fruitful steps for all kinds of learning. I favor inquiry stances, too, in matters both academic as well as SEL. #satchat
A4 Academic gains are tied to SEL and vice versa! Kids feel good about themselves when they learn and when feel good about themselves they’re able to learn! #satchat
So, all but FOUR Republicans voted to keep the Government open. They needed 60 votes to do so. That means they needed Democrat votes. The Democrats abstained, leading to the #SchumerShutdown. So tell me again why hashtags like #GOPshutdown and #TrumpShutodown are trending. -VJ
Question 5: What organizations, experts, books, and other resources help you to develop your ability to promote social emotional learning in schools and with your students? #satchat
A4. It should be a constant effort. Its in the way we socialize w/ other Ts, it’s the way we smile @ all Ss, it’s in the way we stop to discuss big events in our community, state, country our worlds. It’s done through sincere talks w/ Ss about How they r doing. #satchat
A4:I think it’s easy to embed SEL goals across various content lines. One way that stands out for me is during S collaboration. When setting norms relationships skills are at the forefront. #satchat
#ReleaseTheMemo because I'm ready for these people to go down! Now I see why @POTUS had @SenSchumer come to the WH all by himself! Hahaha ohhh Chucky....YOU'RE FIRED!
A4. Service learning and experiential learning opportunities. I feel that these are two great ways for SEL development bc there is as much to gain from the process than the product #satchat
A.5 A great question!! It's crucial that #educators have training before implementing #SEL in their schools! Amazing programs like @LoveInABigWorld make it their mission to empower kids and equip teachers with social-emotional teaching skills https://t.co/8BxCLsoSZn#satchat
A3 Chris, I think we need to talk more about our priorities and that talk has to include all stakeholders--we don't make the time to talk, solve problems together. #satchat

We must respect the differences in our classrooms, our world. The expectations for a S with autism would naturally be different, yet there is still work that you would do to support their ability to connect with peers, adults #satchat

A4 In discussions, press Ss to no to create "monsters" out of those who disagree with them, but to see them as the human beings who hold differing opinions of the world. Also to have them search for areas of agreement rather than conflict #satchat
A4: I wish I could do a morning meeting, but w/ 45 minute-ish class periods in middle school I don't think I can make it work. Is there anyone out there who does? #satchat
What does social emotional learning look like in student populations whose deservingness of such thought and empathy is never in question (white/wealthy kids) v those that have always had their deservingness questioned? #satchat
As someone who doesn't look or sound like my S's, I always begin with genuine respect for their stories. Just had a convo with S's about why their perspective on a novel is equally important as mine. #satchat
Question 5: What organizations, experts, books, and other resources help you to develop your ability to promote social emotional learning in schools and with your students? #satchat
A4: I went to a fully gamified classroom. Every unit has main quests (for grades/XP) & side quests (ungraded, for XP/treasure). Side quests are fun, optional, SEL enrichment tie-ins: creative projects, service, article reflections, etc. Rewards choice & curiosity! #satchat#xplap
That’s the tough part about social-emotional skills. People don’t often recognize when they are weak in those areas. Do road-ragers think they are acting aggressive in the moment (just as a universal example)
#satchat
A4 SEL should seep into all details of your building. Example: For GSA meetings after school, don’t abbreviate in the morning announcements! I want students to hear “Gay Straight Alliance” and I want the members to be proud #satchat
A5 Our Ss read All American Boys (Reynolds & Kiely) and this opened multiple opportunities to discuss social & emotional perspectives. We mindfully built activities that stretched student thinking. #satchat
A4 we use human centered design thinking, PBL, and Maker work to focus on developing and sustaining empathy - what can we do to help others? What can we advocate? Make? Support? #satchat
A4 ~ In addition to our district's limited implementation of the RULER approach, every year the 10th graders at my high school participate in Challenge Day! It begins breaking down the barriers Btwn "different" ppl by recognizing our common experiences & struggles! #satchat
What's instinctual for some is new knowledge and hard learning for others. . .I agree that some skills need to be taught and can be taught. Research shows that empathy can be taught as one example. #satchat

Just let our Ss know we are here for then and there is nothing more important to us then them seeing themselves as they truly should- amazing, smart, powerful, and creative #satchat
A5 I’ve already said it but YouTube videos are a treasure trove of resources , it allows you for to explore visually, audio, I will show this one & discuss how the woman w/ the cart was changed by the main character, what evidence can you give? #satchathttps://t.co/dUV4sQ3ZVq
A5 @edutopia has good articles to get you started in learning more about SEL. Also, @Scholastic has book suggestions and collections that are centered around teaching SEL. #satchat
#satchat A5 Check out Growing a Growth Mindset: Unlocking Character Strengths through Children’s Literature by @MrsJessicaRyan and @sheehank11 ... a PERFECT resource:
A5: The @ELeducation K–5 Language Arts Curriculum!
Routines and protocols actively support tons of #SEL and even character development... elegantly built into excellent literacy instruction.
Oh, and it’s a free, top-rated curriculum. 👍🏾 #satchathttps://t.co/DiKJNxbncu
Teaching S's to pay attention to social cues so they don't get into bad situations, teaching them how to respond to requests they don't like in appropriate ways so they don't hurt themselves or others. Self regulating so they don't throw tantrums. #satchat
Consider reading “Intelligence in the Wild” by David Perkins to see how these standardized measures and the controlled teaching and environments (laboratory) created are strangling deep thinking required in the “wild” of the real world. #satchat

A5 Since you asked 😁...our book’s tools and strategies help students notice how their assignments and interactions can be contexts for values-consistent behavior, and choose those values-consistent behaviors even when it’s hard. https://t.co/gJkpGucobu#satchat
Well that is good, I just continue to question people that make testing this beast that it does not have to be and then that stress is pushed onto the kids, where it becomes dangerous, and the opposite of what this chat is about. #satchat

A5 I really like Nell Noddings She is more in the vein of educational philosophy but definitely a focus on #SEL Happiness and Education https://t.co/sqRmgDSslO#satchat

@MSNBC Horrible start to Saturday listening to Hugh Hewitt carrying Republican water with #SchumerShutdown repeated 10 times in first minute. Changing to CNN. Someday soon I may not change back to MSNBC!
A3: A3: Time to fully integrate it into curriculum plans-Overloaded curriculum maps-PD in silos that fails to help teachers see connections between SEL and other instructional initiatives-Curriculum first mindsets instead of students first #satchat
A4 Personal connections through conferring is a great opportunity to focus on SEL skills - Conversations about goal setting, student interests, relating content to the student's life and engagement. Here is also a list of a few activities to support SEL #satchat#satchat
A5: Our school is trying @PosProject Our admin recently started painting the positive words throughout our hallways. It's a nice little reminder that we are focused on teaching the whole child and that positive character matters. Small thing, BIG impact.#satchat#ourkms
@msnbc I really don't get it. how many viewers do you lose every Saturday morning because of Hugh Hewitt. he just called the gov shutdown "Schumer's shutdown." I turn to @cnn because he makes me 🤮 & if I wanted that POV I'd watch fox...
A1: Absolutely. We should be teaching the whole child. I like to think when my children go to school they are in a social learning lab and are receiving good guidance from the teacher. #satchat
A4 Personal connections through conferring is a great opportunity to focus on SEL skills - Conversations about goal setting, student interests, relating content to the student's life and engagement. Here is also a list of a few activities to support SEL #satchat
A2: SEL can be promoted through PBL and other group activities that give Ss the opportunity to practice SEL. Also, studying characters in history and literacy subjects also is a great opportunity to discuss and teach SEL #satchat
A5: The American School Counselor @ASCAtweets has created Mindsets and Behavior for Student Success standards which provides basic standards on understanding concepts of #SEL#satchathttps://t.co/obghsfnUhQ
A5 Im not sure of any resources I use other than "Love your neighbor as yourself" some days I do a better job than others #satchat (wish twitter had an edit button LOL)
Contemplating this question I am wondering more if I could un-embed SEL. Our conversations, my efforts to redirect, collaborative activities and games, #satchat
A6: Admin & Ts should know Ss as well as their families, utilize the knowledge of guidance counselors, provide families access to resources & opportunities to learn how to support child, creating a family resource room within the school. #satchat
Corey, monthly grade level class meetings are a priority at CRCS. When a teacher is absent, I lead each section of his/her classes that day. See some photos and conversations on my page and I’m happy to share topics if you’re interested! #satchat

A2: Social/emotional learning, in my opinion, should be learned as organically as possible to be most effective. This means greater student intervention/reduced teacher intervention. I intervene when a truly positive or negative event occurs and can be discussed. #satchat

A5 "Better Than Carrots Or Sticks" by @domsmithRP, @NancyFrey, and @DFISHERSDSU. Great resource for integrating SEL and restorative practices in any classroom. #satchat
I was never a big believer is in little thank you notes etc....thought they were silly. Until I started to receive them, and now I need to commit to pay it forward to others. #satchat
Feeling inspired and hopeful after reading the AMAZING responses in #satchat today. #SEL is such a crucial part of teaching the whole child. To see so many educators advocate for social-emotional learning makes us 🙂
A6: Invite them into the school with their children to discuss SEL topics, through donuts with dads, muffins with moms, or for a healthier bend, fruit with families #satchat
A1: Sad we had to give it a name SEL...it’s always been a part of school! Was on the left hand side of the report card...rights, responsibilities, social skills, etc. #satchat
A5: best resources: other Ts. Ask what works. Middle level organizations have incorporated advisory for years. Like this article from AMLE #satchathttps://t.co/7DaYMuq7b4
A6 as an educator I’m constantly learning how to do this work better, but I haven’t always been sharing what I’ve learned w/ parents so now back to school nights I explain why flexible seating or no reading logs or no homework is my policy, why S’s get to choose #satchat

In 1974, a public library in Ohio added scratch-and-sniff scents to its card catalog. They called it the “Stick Your Nose in the Card Catalogue” program. The card in the catalog would have a matching scent of the book on the shelf. #satchat#librarylifehttps://t.co/a9MCBgTyii
Q5. My PLN. They inspire me to be my best, to take time for myself, to leave whatever stresses I have at the door and bring my best self into the building. When I am present & balanced I can give my Ss my best- and they deserve that! They can learn from that #satchat
A5 “Teach Like a Pirate” does a great job advocating for creating lessons to teach the whole child. I piloted some w/ responsive classroom as they developed more materials for advisory for middle school and their site has some great MS resources. #satchat
A6: informing famS what is going on in school because its really easy for kids to forget what they learned that day. We open up those lines of comm. I think its important to offer nights where we have them in with speakers on the topic. If we r not pros how can they be?
#satchat
A6 Call them or meet if possible. Communication with families is key! I ask my Ss’ parents to write me a letter at beginning of year, describing their child, bragging. The info I receive is deep! #satchat
A6 So true. Our fourth grade just invited in all families for culture celebration Thursday night. Ss still talking about last year's event in 5th grade. #satchat
Democrats are far more concerned with Illegal Immigrants than they are with our great Military or Safety at our dangerous Southern Border. They could have easily made a deal but decided to play Shutdown politics instead. #WeNeedMoreRepublicansIn18 in order to power through mess!
A6 Make families a partner in SEL. Invite them in for a morning meeting once a month. Have them come in when celebrating Ss and their accomplishments! Keep them informed. #satchat
A6) As with everything, Ps should have a part in the process. Showcase what is happening as a part of parent nights, in newsletters, on social media; teach the Ps about #SEL, too! #satchat
Late arrival! A6: Dont forget to share the little stuff. Sometimes parents just want a sense of what the day to day work is like. Not just the tests coming up. #satchat
A6: Be connected, share classroom practices, encourage communication and model-invite Ps to be part of the learning! #satchat Connect for S success! ❤️

I apologize for having to leave early—I just wanted to thank @lookforsun & #satchat for the discussion on the importance of social emotional learning—I hope the subject is not a one a done but ongoing and integrated into further discussions on social media and at your schools.
A6 invite them into the school, student showcases about what they are learning. Love using @Seesaw to upload video reflections on the @PosProject character strengths we learned about and how it can apply to their life! Setting goals! #satchat
A6: Invite them into the school with their children to discuss SEL topics, through donuts with dads, muffins with moms, or for a healthier bend, fruit with families #satchat
As passionate educators know, we are expected to do more than what is possible with ALL students. We are forced to make decisions based on established relationships in order to create priorities for EACH student that will allow the most success for their futures. #satchat
No; I am not a history teacher. But, their purpose and mission are excellent. I also remember when they got started. And, they're still here. Says a lot. #satchat
A6 Look to make your school the hub of the community, events, family activities, learning nights , are all great ways but it starts with the simplest of things like making sure everyone is nice, positive and make parents feel welcome everytime they walk through the door! #satchat
Feeling inspired and hopeful after reading the AMAZING responses in #satchat today. #SEL is such a crucial part of teaching the whole child. To see so many educators advocate for social-emotional learning makes us 🙂

I do home visits, I go to my Ss soccer games, plays, whatever they ask me to go to I’m there. When we make these efforts we show the community that we are more than just Ts teaching curriculum but we are invested in the whole Ss- this opens so many doors for dialogue #satchat
A6: it's important to have the mindset that families are partners in education. Sometimes, we erroneously have single narratives of families that limit the possibility of these partnership. The first step is having a learner stance: what can this family teach me? #satchat
A6 Collaborating w/parents as partners means taking dog-eared page from Stephen Covey: "First seek to understand, then to be understood." That means teacher/school efforts to initiate conversations w/families & listen well. #satchat
A6 All great ideas, Susan. The principal in my school has fostered a tremendous culture of service learning which has boosted family-educator-student collaboration and great #sel#satchat
So true. As essential part of building a positive relationship with our students is to understand & build positive relationships with their parents and support structure in the community. That's part of understanding the whole child. #satchat
A6 I provide an almost daily glimpse into the classroom via @ClassDojo stories feature. I often will put the link I used in class there so parents can watch it at hike w/ S #satchat
@LaurenPorosoff , thank you for sharing this! Great conversation starters for teacher and parents to use with Ss. Encourages self-reflection, goal setting, relationship building, and accountability. #satchat
A6 ~ I think a family mindfulness training would be beneficial for the entire community! The challenge is always getting our community out to participate! Possibly incorporating aspects into events that ppl attend, concerts, meet the teacher, etc. #satchat
It is incredibly exciting to go into classrooms using this curriculum, and see all students engaged in collaboration, pushing each others’ thinking, realizing that there are different paths to the same answer. All actively scaffolded by intentionally-designed materials. #satchat
A6 Honoring the home-school connection. What does it feel like as an adult in my school? Are adults welcomed, interacted with, provided info on the school-class community? #satchat
A6: engaging parents starts with making them feel valued and welcomed the same way we would for our students. Having open mic night where kids showcase their talent and share what their learning about SEL is one way #satchat
We please need your help to replace our home furnace, as it has quit after twenty-two years: We've raised $385 on GFM; retired friends, $200 offline, of the $2500 we need. Mother and I thank you very much #SatChat!

Q6. I also lead an Empowering Families workshop for families where we all come together to talk. Our last one was on SEL. We presented information on what we are doing w/in our school and then opened it for discussion “what can we do as a community? As parents?” #satchat
A6: Offer workshops/seminars for families on many different topics. Like the Columbus, OH, Parent University or the @D87_GPS Parent Series in Glenbard, IL. #satchat
Question Seven: In three-ten words or with an image, create a headline that tells why we should embed greater social emotional learning into school programs. This will help us all w/advocacy. Thanks #satchat
A6. We surveyed our parents and sought out what they feel like they want more info on and what they feel like their child will benefit from more of. This will equate to intentional events that can address those needs. Our parent forums solely focus on SEL. #satchat
A6 talk with all parents with respect and be real. I teach my Sts and sometimes their parents about school culture/job culture vs. home culture. Some SEL pain comes from not knowing the difference.#satchat
A6 Communicate what we’re focused on so they can continue the conversation at home. Sometimes just providing questions for them to ask can spark discussion. #satchat
THANK YOU #SATCHAT PLN

I'm off to teach #NJEXCEL - enjoy your weekend everyone and see you next week.
Chris, I was thinking about this as I prepared this morning. How does #SEL look different and same related to culture, how can we grow conversations to provide insight in this regard? #satchat
Making room for & inviting all student voices lead to fruitful steps for all kinds of learning. I favor inquiry stances, too, in matters both academic as well as SEL. #satchat

A3: The largest obstacle is all the federal and state legislation that is forced down on schools. The laws are created by politicians looking at misrepresented data and they use it to fit their agenda. Otherwise more $ and attention could go to SEL. #satchat

A6: It’s important to include families in school events. While academics are important, it’s great for the community to see kids excel in other areas. Asking questions like the ones below can also be a part of everyday conversation. #satchat
@RepChrisStewart on @IngrahamAngle moments ago: "...it's not just FBI and DOJ, there is information regarding the politicization of the CIA that to me is at least as troubling..."

I like to think SEL all starts with modeled behaviors at the top. Ethical leadership. Transferred naturally to the teachers and adults in the school and ultimately (Most imp’t) benefitting the students. Every day is a chance to grow our SE skill set. #satchat
