#ALedchat Archive
#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

A1: I think it's important that we model professional learning to Ts. Show them the benefits of a PLN!
Wendy Story, AP Elem in Homewood, AL
A1: Give teachers choice and a voice. Empowerment comes from input into the process.

A1: It's important for admins to take interest in their Ts.Encourage them to build upon their strengths, point them 2 resources,..
A1: It's important to help them develop meaningful, achievable goals, then support them as they work towards them.
A1: Model what you want... If there is a PD, you had better be there front & center, taking notes.
Work WITH them to set goals, discuss prof./student needs. Offer avenues, potential outcomes, potential evidence.
Thanks for the shout out, Jimmy!
A1: Offer them choices...cohorts led by colleagues, for the adventurous, iTunesU and Google Educator for independent!
A1: give them choice in their learning. Treat them like the professionals they are.
A1: I would suggest model for T's in PD new innovative instructional practices. They will use immediately.
A1: The best leaders help teachers feel secure. This allows teachers to get out of their comfort zone ... a prereq for pro growth
Glad you are here! Been missing your great input! https://t.co/WJqAI2XuNk

So true! I'm thankful I have admins that do just that!
Late but here...Melissa Mann Madison County Schools Collaborative teacher
Goal setting is awesome! https://t.co/YjmsEoeT1A
A1: It's important to help them develop meaningful, achievable goals, then support them as they work towards them.
Do you set them up with coaches? Follow up with goals discussed?
A1: Be designing meaningful learning experiences that occur frequently & informally... Provide structures & give choice!
Oops. A1: Work WITH them to set goals, discuss prof./student needs. Offer avenues, potential outcomes, potential evidence.
A1: Ts must understand that we are learners too. As the Ss change, so should we. If we want Ss to have fun w/ learning, we should.
I agree, one size rarely fits all.
As school leaders, we need to model enthusiasm for learning.
A1b: Celebrate risk-taking...share your own PD journey...demonstrate the power of Twitter and Voxer!
A1: Asking Ts their "WHY" and modeling or finding a format for their "HOW".
I've been toying with the idea of a Genius Hour type approach for Ts.
Absolutely! If it's important enough to take T time, it's important enough for your time!
A1: Give them a chance to pick something meaningful to them...passion may often develop after a choice but not always a routine
A1: have conversations about the difference between professional development & professional learning https://t.co/6gdsdmmaET
A1: have conversations about the difference between professional development & professional learning https://t.co/5Pc5eJA8UK
A1 Seek Ts individual perspective on areas of possible growth & create prof lrng plan where they decide how they will meet goals
It also models risk-taking. Developing a culture for "trial and error" is essential for growth. https://t.co/lTUC6h0gJ0
A1: I would suggest model for T's in PD new innovative instructional practices. They will use immediately.
A1.2: Been hooked on the concept of passion-based learning lately. Can we allow Ts time to focus on what they're passionate about?
Love it! Teachers who are allowed to find their passion will let students find theirs!
**********Question 2 is coming up in 1 minute**********
I love this idea! Give Ts a chance to shine
A1: share your own stories of growth, learning, successes (and failures, too!) Model a growth mindset
Each T is assigned to an admin. I also follow up with Ts in a PD group. https://t.co/he1Dn0Iolt
Do you set them up with coaches? Follow up with goals discussed?
I love good PD, makes it easy to,be excited! I love learning!
Allowing Ts the freedom to decide what they want to work on and then providing guided autonomy
Right, Jeff. Important that this is a collaborative process - teamwork for professional growth
to keep the fire going we have to
A1: Let them know that PD isn't just scheduled workshops. PD has many faces & most often occurs in your building.
Absolutely! Best way is to refocus staff meetings as PD meetings! !
A1: Point out strengths and areas of improvement, encourage them to set personal goals
A1: we also have to find ways to remove things from Ts plates in order to make time for learning & show it is a priority
Thank you to everyone participating in this "edcamp-style" chat tonight! We love that you are risk-taking with us!
Instead of "can we," let's say "we can"! https://t.co/wyY4PwsPFO
A1.2: Been hooked on the concept of passion-based learning lately. Can we allow Ts time to focus on what they're passionate about?
What do the Ts think about it? Are they invested in their learning because of it? https://t.co/dpLmpS5k5S
My school bought all Ts memberships in . Self-paced, self-selected PD. Now my curiosity leads way.
A2: We have an amazing Center of Technology. Many students grad w/associates degree b4 HS diploma. Meeting ALL needs!
Q2: I believe has a great career tech program-anything from CNA programs to welding/auto. Very needed professions.
Happy to help! Starts w Twitter...find people who you connect with...find them on Voxer...start a convo! https://t.co/A4FXiOWErE
need to learn more about how to use Voxer for PD.....still haven't figured that out yet....
A1: Positive reinforcement is crucial. Validate teachers who are rockin' their PD and celebrate them in front of their colleagues.
Key question, Derek. Important we support Ts in their learning passions. Increases capacity
A2: Let's celebrate! We aren't factories molding replicas. We are schools preparing our Ss for THEIR future!
We have a Health Academy that Ss can leave & enter the world of work. We need to celebrate honest work.
A2: Partnerships with CTE and CACC allows many of our Ss to receive cert. and many w/ associates degrees along with HS diploma.
Love! I've explored all kinds of concepts, learned tons. Get recertification points, too. Silver lining.
A2: The needle has been moved positively for skilled trades programs. As often as possible integrate them with common curricula!
I am happy to help, too!

A2: Student-built housing in our district is a great opportunity for students to learn the ins and outs of the building trade.
A2: 6 students graduating with CNA from HHS this year. Already career ready if they choose.
Give them what they need to succeed regardless of the path they choose beyond us.
It's important to celebrate those who are living fully in their gifts. It's different for everyone! https://t.co/M80HpjIW1l
Q2: I believe has a great career tech program-anything from CNA programs to welding/auto. Very needed professions.
A2: It is unfortunate that much of the dialogue is driving Ss into college even though it may not be best for them
***********Question 3 coming up in 1 minute ***********
..encourage your Ts to connect with others in the Simple K-12 community and here on Twitter
Excited that is embracing PD as an ongoing collaborative process of individual growth rather than scheduled events
A2: Our job is not to make our students good at school. We want them prepared for their next steps, whatever that may be.
A2:Our Center of Tech does a great job of preparing Ss for their future whatever it might be-welding, auto, drafting, etc.
A2: We've partnered w/ our local Comm. College to provide kids credentials for job opportunities post HS
A2: We have 2 students licensed CNA’s this year and several receiving scholarships for Welding program. You bet we celebrate!!!
School is a small snapshot our their lives https://t.co/6B0vclYOie
A2: Our job is not to make our students good at school. We want them prepared for their next steps, whatever that may be.
A3:Taken it upon myself to celebrate all Ss and staff every day. Whether it's a fist bump or just a hello. Celebrate ALL successes
and John McCullar would love to share! https://t.co/Ly9amFuE27
I LOVE this!! I want to know more about your programs there. Awesome!
That's AWESOME!! Are you telling this story on twitter??
Educators agree, but also know there is often external pressure for us to develop a test score or a GPA 😕 https://t.co/eCMLm9Knib
A2: Our job is not to make our students good at school. We want them prepared for their next steps, whatever that may be.
A3: I love the idea of a show-off for student learning. Send the seniors to the Ele school- show both ways.
A3: I gave Ts a Redbox code and told them to chill out with a movie. Also- just lighten up. If you're happy, it's contagious.
Totally get that... especially as a mom of two daughters. :-)
A3: Don't underestimate power of positive (handwritten) notes...celebrated & had Ss, Ts, & Ps write + notes!
I need to do better celebrating on twitter!
https://t.co/PfVTSZZEvn
A3: Don't underestimate power of positive (handwritten) notes...celebrated & had Ss, Ts, & Ps write + notes!
Love this--we have our Science students writing children's books based on a Chem concept and reading to lower schools
Q3: Notice the little things; always say thank you; genuine compliments; be inclusive
A3: Reflect on the growth our Ss have made and Keep in mind some of our Ss may be sad to see summer come
A3: I work in an Elem. School. Kids are funny. I laugh, smile, and give hugs!
Several seniors shared the importance of doing your best & their success stories w-our elem Ss in a testing pep rally.
A3: EOY is a challenge...find time to celebrate Ts... recognition...highlight lessons or Ts...celebrate test results
A3: shouldn't be stressful; Keep calm and get things done. We know it's coming so we should be able to handle it. Also, smile!
If so, why is performance tied to test scores? This encourages us to teach to the test to ensure $, etc. Mike-MD
A3: Act as a cheerleader and ask to help out teachers as much as possible. Be visible and available!
Hugs make just about any day positive! https://t.co/D3rSGNXAMx
A3: I work in an Elem. School. Kids are funny. I laugh, smile, and give hugs!
A3: It’s important to celebrate. I’ve shared before, "make the positives so loud, the negatives are hard to hear.”
A3: We have give-aways, gifts, publicly brag on out Ts, and smile a lot (it's free!) Do what you can to alleviate stress!
we live in a highly competitive community & Ss are expected to be very high achieving. Pluses and minuses to that.
A3: I try to create the moments for positivity at the end--asking Ts real questions like "what's your proudest moment this year?"
Q3: at EOY celebrations acknowledge the achievements of the group for work done inside and outside of school on personal levels
Visibility is VERY important this time of the year!
"make the negatives hard to hear" i love this!
A3b: I offer time...give away GOOSE (Get Out Of School Early) cards...I cover teacher's class last hour of day! It's free!
Agree! My daughters (as all students) are more than a test score.
A3 Important that we highlight the quality lrng experiences our Ts are facilitating for Ss, emphasizing teaching to the
**********Question 4 coming up in 1 minute***********
you bet..management by walking around is key during this time of year.
A3: at my 1st school, we followed the kids to the bus on the last day &
waved goodbye while "schools out for the summer" played
A3: End of year marks celebration of Ss, faculty, & staff. T & staff of year.Student awards for academics, character, & hard work.
This chat is fun tonight as we answer questions from the participants!
Great point...EOY should be pleasant as well..summer is very different person-to-person https://t.co/E4Z7VMH4S0
A3: Reflect on the growth our Ss have made and Keep in mind some of our Ss may be sad to see summer come
A3: Schedule it, make it important, make it a point to speak w Ts and praise, praise students, celebrate things that are growing.
A3:Realize we are ALL tired but laughter & positivity go a long way! Provide co-workers with kindness. Choose joy!
A3: How about a positive phone call to the emergency contact of a staff member? Makes both of their days!!
A3: Faculty & students were treated to Smuckers' Sweet Donuts thanks to admin! Do something unexpected! https://t.co/fTldpYNEkw
Jump on in, Jamie! Just asked question 4!
There's always a reason. One must ask how valued are our students.
A4: Great question, I have no answer.
We even got our central office involved last year. Horns, waving,...
thank you…we are trying daily!
Great point! We need to be sensitive to this.
A4: Love it when students in one class teach students in another class a great app or program...spreads like wildfire!
so fun and such good memories! There may have been a year w squirt guns too... Shhhhh! 😉
thanks for such great responses, everyone--so helpful!
A2: late, but The push for coding/making/engineering directly aligns w/alternative paths. Thankful you model this daily
A4: I use surveys from Google forms to to measure if Ss are truly engaged with tech. They provide honest feedback.
A4:I love walking into classroom and starting convos about what Ss are doing with tech. If they're engaged, they're eager to share
A4: what have they CREATED using the tech.
A4: Do they know the tech well enough to help teach someone how to use it or just well enough to play it?
A4: Conversations with Ss and their ability to discuss use of tech tool and how it supports learning helps assess effectiveness.
A4: tech or no tech I think engagement is measured in the same ways - are Ss invested in the tasks that lay before them?
A4: Also S products. My #1 q- are Ss creating and/or collaborating w tech
This is what I do, too, Wendy. No formal data or assessments... just personal stories, & gut. https://t.co/UNAAGwGBv6
A4:I love walking into classroom and starting convos about what Ss are doing with tech. If they're engaged, they're eager to share
A4: can Ss produce an item while collaborating with teammates?
A4: In lieu of actually providing a real answer ... I would like to assert the privilege afforded me by the 5th Amendment.
Totally agree...some of the best measures are good ol' fashioned conversations with kiddos! https://t.co/QrSVnclB66
A4: Conversations with Ss and their ability to discuss use of tech tool and how it supports learning helps assess effectiveness.
A4: Does the tech resource detract from OR enhance the ease of instruction? Help to hallenge students to dig deeper?
A4: trying something new at the end of the year gets the kids excited and engaged has been a favorite with Ss & Ts
A4: Observations, formative/comparative test...we have to determine has tech increased not just how Ss learn but what
A4 Also important to support Ts with ensuring increased rigor is tied to increased engagement
A4: I agree--the more students are making and creating and talking about the tech, the more engaged they are
**********Question 5 coming up in 1 minute***********
A4: Did we ever measure pencil/pen/paper/chalkboard/whiteboards... ? The teacher engages by use of the tool.
A4: review questions THEY ask, analyze their products, teach and apply SAMR where appropriate in the review
Right, Grayson. Students should be able to verbalize the what and the WHY
It all comes back to student centered learning. This statement holds true even if you remove "tech" https://t.co/YkVGAfQKuw
A4: I agree--the more students are making and creating and talking about the tech, the more engaged they are
Student surveys.Their opinions can help decide what tech is/is not effective. I love getting feedback from Ss
Taught my tech team how to create one with forms & sites. A couple are trying them this week
A4: Focus on students - what do you see? Hear? Tech can't be a checkbox on the walk through form
Be proactive. Anticipate what the negativity might be and have something positive that addresses it
A5: Fill the feed w positive!
A5: You have the power to change convos. Negativity only continues with an audience.
A5: It's the Pollyanna method, turn it around on them. The more good you share, the less the negative sticks.
A5: Let them in on the PD in your school--let them know that the teachers are committed and smart and invested
A5: Something we battle on a daily basis. Model positivity in the classroom/hallways. My goal is to energize the people around me!
A5: I think you have to ignore the negativity. Act like it was never said, and move the conversation along. Keep focus on solution
A5: Keep Ss in mind and what's best for learners, have empathy for the learners.
A5: if you are starting now... It is much to late! Must have been building relationships & communicating vision all year.
Say something like "I know there's some concerns about x but here's why there shouldn't be."
A6: Continue to start Qs how can we help...how do we finish strong. Get everyone involved in moving forward for Ss
We need to do a better job of getting the word out.
A5:Focus on what you are really there for-Ss! Keep being a Positive Polly, even when you are surrounded by Negative Nancy!
A5: We fill our world with the motto... Whenever things are noticed we celebrate.
A5: When a teacher complains, say: "I'm glad you're still committed to making a difference; otherwise that could get you down."
A5: By continuing to promote the positives. Shower the world with positives to drown out the negatives.
I like to ask these people 1:1 for a solution...how would you solve this problem? https://t.co/43e6VdMNDG
A5: I think you have to ignore the negativity. Act like it was never said, and move the conversation along. Keep focus on solution
YES!! Dilute the negative messages! https://t.co/YIie6Hv9P7
A5: By continuing to promote the positives. Shower the world with positives to drown out the negatives.
A5: design thinking gives all stakeholders voice-classroom, school, district & community levels. Big solutions for big problems.
A5: A wise person I work w/ says to give them the facts! Encourage growth & look for the silver lining. Positive spin.
Also, I have a rule that says after any prob. is discussed we must come up with at least two solutions.
A5: don't engage in it. People won't bring you their gripes if they know you will only offer positivity & solutions
Negativity thrives in darkness...shine the light on it...celebrate the positive daily! https://t.co/WD8LXkQvoZ
A5: By continuing to promote the positives. Shower the world with positives to drown out the negatives.
Love your answer here. Moving to the solution is crucial. Focusing on the details of the negativity does nothing
Shift the Monkey! https://t.co/vtDUJvlVoj
I like to ask these people 1:1 for a solution...how would you solve this problem? https://t.co/43e6VdMNDG
A5: I think you have to ignore the negativity. Act like it was never said, and move the conversation along. Keep focus on solution
Thank you Chrys for sharing that is what I quoted earlier!!! Love this!!!
A5.2: Something I've learned through is that it's important to tell your story and share your many successes!
Absolutely...that ...he knows what he is talking about!
A5: I try to remind adults it's not about adult conveniences or taking things personally. The focus should remain child-centered.
A5: build relationships with stakeholders. Have the conversations, it takes time for them to trust.
************Question 6 in 1 minute***********
my kit shipped today. I can't wait to share w staff.
YES! And to spread that awesomeness...celebrate other's successes as well! https://t.co/yozfmBRz73
A5.2: Something I've learned through is that it's important to tell your story and share your many successes!
Q3: don't forget to recognize Ts for obtaining advanced degrees, successful 1st year, longevity, transitioning grade levels, etc.
I am sure you've watched "Seeing Red Cars?"
Q3: use your leadership team to cover a duty or provide extra time for teachers to grade etc. show them you appreciate their work
A5: Be relentless about sticking to positive agenda. Don't engage the negative comments but reframe their complaints.
A6: If all you had to do is give the assignment, what's the point of the teacher?
SO, so very important. Acknowledging accomplishments as well as cool things happening in classrooms is crucial.
A5: Bring positive voices w/powerful ideas together to drown out negative naysayers. We've discovered positivity is contagious.
A6: depends on the outcome of the assignment .Are Ss helping to teach the content or create/produce something? Or is it busy work
A6: Isn't the goal of the T to inspire Ss to achieve their full potential? Will just simply giving a content assignment do that?
A6: depends on the assignment. If Ss have skills to complete it, s centered discovery of content is great way to teach it!
A6: It all depends on the teacher..some create assignments that facilitate learning better than some can teach.
A6: Depends on assignments. Ss can learn content through PBL and other well planned learning opportunities better than lecture.
Man, that is a monster statement with many levels of implications. Wow. Awesome https://t.co/zNTXKOV5s4
A6: Isn't the goal of the T to inspire Ss to achieve their full potential? Will just simply giving a content assignment do that?
What she said! https://t.co/FhetRo0YJV
A6: It all depends on the teacher..some create assignments that facilitate learning better than some can teach.
A6: Depends on the assignment, WS are not the same as teaching. Researching and reporting a topic can have the effect of teaching.
I don't believe so. Giving an assignment about Shakespeare's plays isn't the same as teaching Ss his plays
A6: invested teachers make creative assignments that help deliver content effectively
what if assignment is like this? created by a teacher to engage Ss in authentic application? https://t.co/1jklynIMlV
A6: Assignments must be purposeful..mastering a skill..not just to meet a deadline.
Q5: be honest and transparent and give as much notice as possible about initiatives, have objectives and provide support...
I think you can give Ss an assignment about after you've taught the content.
A6: Isn't it really about a purposeful mesh of the two working in concert?
you'd love it! It's all about where you put your focus
LOVE this Christy! Doing this now w/ 3D project. Very little knowledge myself but can facilitate through Ss discovery
Q6: Simply, the answer is NO WAY.
Like the thinking here...how are we flipping the clsrm. Intertwine the 2...make tching & lrning reciprocal https://t.co/IqsqCTzrpe
A6: depends on the outcome of the assignment .Are Ss helping to teach the content or create/produce something? Or is it busy work
trending #2 on Twitter after Power of Educators!
***********Question 7 coming up in 1 minute***********
Amen! Key is invested. https://t.co/3sIrcmXP8J
A6: invested teachers make creative assignments that help deliver content effectively
Q5: negativity often stems from stress, being uncomfortable or change, anticipate the problems/responses of your team and off help
There's the key..teacher is the cornerstone..they make an assignment extraordinary...not other way around! https://t.co/58gHOYOvgJ
what if assignment is like this? created by a teacher to engage Ss in authentic application? https://t.co/1jklynIMlV
Looks like the teacher had "taught" content then extended the learning w/a great activity.
A6: sounds like the eternal struggle with designing online courses. Just like f2f, engagement (or lack of) will be evident.
Discovery lrning is awesome...give Ss a foundation and watch them flourish through exploration https://t.co/9yxXHRF8FB
A6: depends on the assignment. If Ss have skills to complete it, s centered discovery of content is great way to teach it!
what if I assign Ss a ? Isn't that BETTER than me "teaching" the concept of problem solving?
A6: Meaningful, well crafted assignments have the potential to facilitate students becoming independent learners. A noble goal.
A7: Positive culture begins with trust, common goals, and dedicated/determined people.
A7: I believe relationship building is the foundation block to any and all organiations.
A7: Great Q...a positive leader...a vision...and time
A7: Positive people who build strong relationships and who love coming to school daily.
A7: Someone to start it....it's a fire waiting to be spread
A7: I do think it starts with leadership team and then shift to key teacher leaders.
A6: I personally learn best by reading/studying/viewing content then discussion. Teacher as facilitator- No lecture please.
A7: Set the tone right from the beginning...no boring staff meeting on first day...team-building and fun to start the year!
A7: establish absolutes, non-negotiates, and be the biggest cheerleader and model in the building. Celebrate evidence, effort.
A7: Love the students and love the teachers ... every day. You can't fake it. Positive school culture flows from this.
A7. It takes vision and legitimate buy in. Shifting a culture is hard work. Modeling & leading by example on many levels.
A7: Relationships first. How can we be a positive champion for our kids? Celebrate successes of Ss AND staff. LOVE what you do!
or developed a purpose and relevance for the content and taught as it became necessary
1st you have to get the Admins to be positive & then the Ts. Ss feed off the energy we put out.
A7: I had success when I tweeted pics of teacher embodying a concept wrote about & he retweeted. Tell our story!
A7: be clear about the goals and be clear about what the "enemies" of those goals are so that everyone can recognize them
A7: How about the 'Morning Meeting' book? Has anyone tried this with success??
A7b: We've done scavenger hunts, ziplines, and art projects on our first day back...they can read staff handouts on their own...
We did an amazing race. Teachers were engaged and it started us off having fun together! https://t.co/vQmEgHvYAv
A7: Set the tone right from the beginning...no boring staff meeting on first day...team-building and fun to start the year!
we must know our staff...plant seeds where your faculty & school can grow https://t.co/s88kNGIjft
A7: I do think it starts with leadership team and then shift to key teacher leaders.
Yes! Set short term, attainable goals you can celebrate as you work your way down the path!
A7: Reflecting on current practices and modeling new behaviors that fit with the organization's . Also taking risks.
Love it everyday! Not just on the easy days. https://t.co/i0jhPVGiac
A7: Relationships first. How can we be a positive champion for our kids? Celebrate successes of Ss AND staff. LOVE what you do!
Start by celebrating great things going on in the building being done by Ts, staff, and ALL Ss
AWESOME! Team-building and building relationships will trump procedures for the new year every time! https://t.co/anzkmhtoyE
We did an amazing race. Teachers were engaged and it started us off having fun together! https://t.co/vQmEgHvYAv
A7: Set the tone right from the beginning...no boring staff meeting on first day...team-building and fun to start the year!
AWESOME answers to Question 7!!
A7: Starts at the top-common goals, voice in how to accomplish goals, protecting teacher time, showing off success
This. All about this. Leaders need to do soul searching on this one. Absolutely foundational. https://t.co/ObJfuHI7DA
A7b: 4 weeks ago I started w/ my Ss and it has spread out to other Ss and staff members. Fist bumps & high fives!
A7: bring back the teacher lounge (not work room)
It always goes back to relationships!
************Final Question coming up in 1 minute************
A7: starts with basic expectation of respect. Not all Ts must agree, but all will respect & support one another as professionals
A7:Positivity begins w/dedicated team members who work toward a common goal-to create leaders for the future EVERYDAY!
Our team building one year involved faculty/staff doing RAK in the community. We turned the pics into a slide show.
