Hi #IDedchat PLN! It is 8:00 - time for our weekly chat! Tonight we will be discussing Qs that I found interesting during my scanning of Twitter this week.
Martie, Indianapolis. 7th grade writing. Grad school student. Wife. Mom. Tired person heading to bed soon with 3rd 7:30 AM meeting this week tomorrow morning. #IDedchat
R1: a lot of our Ss do not have background knowledge to engage them in learning at a high level. We need to provide our Ss with the ability to build that knowledge to engage them in learning and reduce disciplinary issues in the classroom. #IDedchat
We work on awareness too- name the behavior. Example- student tapping pencil super loud bugging other students. "You're tapping your pencil and it's distracting, please make a better choice." #idedchat
Yesterday in my physics class we were talking about acceleration. I showed a @YouTube video about drag racing. It was about 7 minutes in length and talked about distance, displacement, change in velocity. #IDedchat
I work with a lot of students that have negative behaviors. So first I try to determine if it is a choice or not. If it is not, self regulation is when they feel a certain way internally, we work to replace their negative behavior with one more socially acceptable. #idedchat
R1 - I think some also need to feel comfortable it knowing all the answers and being willing to take controlled risks. So much of their lives are out of control. Need to know that some risks are ok. #IDedchat
Hey #idedchat I'd love to join but I am busy doing water clean up after somebody took a shower with the curtain on the OUTSIDE of the tub. Failure is a chance to learn right? 🤦
A2. We do not always know why kids act a certain way, but we can understand their home life, and the difficulties they come to us with. And we can help them learn strategies to deal with the problems life as given them. #idedchat
R2: we must realize that having a child sit in a classroom for any length of time when they maybe have not eaten or were evicted, or had a family issue isn’t going to be beneficial all the time. Understanding your Ss and their background is essential. #IDedchat
A2: This one resonates with me, particularly with how our new Supt, Dr. @dogoodstuff introduced us to the Dignity Model. It is amazing to see how the culture changes when dignity is valued. Empathy is a huge part of this. #ksdedtech#idedchat
R2 - “I understandlife is hard. I also understand you must take responsibility for your actions.” Bottom line - I hear & see you, but the high expectations for you aren’t budging. You’re too special, & life’s too short, for me to lower the standards. #IDedchat
A2- empathy for me is separating behavior from child. I correct in love bc I want them to succeed not bc it bugs me. I try to tell that to students and give them reasons for correction. Also- don't hold grudges, give millions of second chances, new starts. #IDedchat
Q3: Over time, challenging behavior can take a toll on peer relations. What are some good resources or tools for building the classroom community? #IDedchat
R3: #PBL gives Ss a sense of community and can help demonstrate that these challenging behavioral issues can be changed. Giving a task where Ss can see accomplishment and success can really help a lot #idedchat
A3. Everyone deserves a equal chance. That is fair. Some kids need behavior charts, some need 5 extra minutes for a test. We all need something at some point. Kids understand this, as long as we allow them to learn it. #idedchat
R4: about the only thing I give for homework is going through notes from class or watching video (flipped stuff). If I give problems for howwork, that can create frustration and they can’t always ask questions quickly or get a quick answer. #idedchat
R4 - time always given in class to complete assignments. However, what’s not finished in class must be done at home. Almost NEVER give work due the next day. #MomofVarsityAthletes#NeedFlexibility#IDedchat
A4. I once gave an adult learner with autism, social skills homework. We started with saying Hi 2 others in the mall with no expectations. He has know progressed 2 b able 2 reflect on others behavior.4 kids, I give parents option 2 opt out.I want learning not compliance. #idedchat
R5: Ha! This is where you can build background knowledge. The video I showed the other day could have been viewed at home. This assumes that Ss will spend time watching it. #idedchat
A4. Even when working with adults, giving homework is hit or miss. If adults can’t complete it (for a variety of reasons)it’s not surprising that students aren’t completing homework. There really needs to be a well understood and bought into purpose. #idedchat
I don’t agree with this statement, but a former principal colleague said once “we are here to teach content, not responsibility!” There are no academic benefits from turning in a syllabus that is signed. #IDedchat
R6: not sure if I know what “quit points” are; however, I assume this means assignments aren’t done. Sometimes there are too many distractions in the classroom when work is done. Sometimes it’s just boring to Ss. #idedchat
Every student needs to have a place in the learning from which they can access moving forward. For example, in math, if a problem is given that can be answered a number of ways, you will see the access point of students—some basic, some advanced, some in the middle. #idedchat
Q7: How can we help students push through their "quit point?" #IDedchat In other words - how do we help students stay motivated to keep going even when frustrated?
A6. Thanks to @WinkelerD for the definition. Any # of things could cause Ss to quit. Should they earn points up to that point? Depends. Are you shooting for mastery of content and this quit point is further along than last time? Sure.#idedchat
A7. Build a relationship. Relate this to a goal for them. Make it personal. In the short term, to help build intrintrisic motivation, place a carrot. #idedchat
R7: pushing through that “quit point” is me pestering my Ss until they cry “uncle”. Once they know that I am totally bought in on their success and I believe in them, they will do whatever I ask! #idedchat
A7: Growing up, it was a T said, Ss did. Not sure if that was good or bad. Regardless, now, connecting with Ss is important. No different than how commercials nowadays connect on an emotional level. #IDedchat
A8: NOW my "WHY" is to help others become the best versions of themselves. I have had so many people see things in me that I didn't see in myself - now I want to continue to pay that forward. #IDedchat
So many of our Ss have never had someone believe in them. This is one thing that @PrincipalKafele stresses in his speeches and writings. I believe in you and know that you can and will achieve. #IDedchat

Thank you @averyteach for a wonderful chat. I immediately related to Ss in my classroom with "quit points". What a great conversation tonight. See everyone next week. #idedchat
