#fcpslearn is a weekly chat about teaching and learning. Our focus is on creativity, innovation and inspiration. We discuss a range of educational topics that range from technology integration to the Olympics.
Hello everyone. It is time for #FCPSlearn. We are discussing "Differentiation" tonight. We will be using the Q & A format tonight. Please don't forget to use #FCPSlearn in your responses. Please introduce yourself.
Hi! I’m Debbie. Looking forward to discussing differentiation tonight! How about it @bretclovis and @RiverHawkIFT ...are you available to join in? #FCPSlearn
A1: Differentiation=Knowing my learners, both their needs and interests, and developing engaging opportunities appropriate for their current situation, and yet challenging them to grow #FCPSlearn

A1: Differentiation is all about giving students voice and choice. Building options in of different levels so every student has the opportunity to learn. #fcpslearn
A2: English Learners need instructional materials and activities that allow for them to learn the content and the language at the same time. Embedded vocabulary instruction can be a help. #FCPSlearn
A2: Not every learner responds the same. Not every learner has the same interests. Just because something clicks for me, doesn't always mean that it will be a hit for them. Gotta intersect with their interests. #fcpslearn
I think differentiation is what great teachers have been doing forever. They do whatever it takes to move learners forward. Every student matters all the time #fcpslearn
A2: Differentiation is important for all students to give them all an equitable chance to learn. It provides the guidance to learn and scaffolding to enrich.

A2 Our job as Ts is to teach content, and if there are roadblocks that we knock over or steer kids around, we owe it to them to do that. Is it about us teaching or them learning? #fcpslearn
A1~ variety of methods, materials, means used to meet the Ss where they & delivering instruction that meets their needs wherever, however ~ accessible to all, equity of access & all that it entails #fcpslearn
A1: meeting all needs and student interests. Providing ss with opportunities to learn in all ways but choose how want to be assessed. Assessing concepts in diff ways so you we whether ss know concepts or can take a test. Ss identify weak and make a plan to improve. #FCPSlearn
A2 - We always must remember the importance of equality of learning. Language in many schools is a huge issue. Addressing the needs of all students helps our society as a whole. #fcpslearn

A3: Any digital tool can be used to differentiate. The tool is just that, a tool. The Ts and Ss take a tool, combine it with learning and growth, and yield innovation/transformation.
#fcpslearn
A3: The main thing I do is create menu assignments for some of my units instead of tests. Giving students the opportunity to choose how they want to show me what they know has led to some AWESOME products this year! #fcpslearn
A3 - for many students we utilize google translator if the work is technology driven. If it’s language based, sometimes we chunk the information in small pieces. #fcpslearn
A2: so you can identify whether ss struggle with skills like reading, writing, or the multi step process of reading questions, choosing right answer and circling it vs understanding concepts. Also addresses ss interests and makes learning relevant. #FCPSlearn
A3 I differentiate the way Ss access the content. Videos, articles, websites at various reading levels. Choice in intake usual leads to the brain choosing what works best #fcpslearn
A3 my favorite tool is my own creativity. I love creating and trying to find ways to engage kids. To help me out I am a huge fan of @Flipgrid and @OneNoteEDU#FCPSlearn
This is more of a teaching theory than instruction. Getting to know ELL students or others with language barriers should always be a pre-requisite to instruction. Building that connection makes assessing their needs easier and more effective. #fcpslearn
A4: A lot of email this year. I am actually sending home positive emails as I am participating in this chat. Next year I want to use @Screencastify to give a weekly or bimonthly update on the class. Email has been a great tool for me to communicate with ELL Parents #fcpslearn
A4 I use my website and our grading platform for general info, and email for personal. I will admit I rely on the ENL T and counselor to help with communication. #fcpslearn
A4: Communicate with parents any way possible... Phone, email, video, @RemindHQ, @Flipgrid, etc. Make it hard for them to not know the greatness that's happening in your classroom.
#fcpslearn
A4: It is important to understand often times our communication is with families and not necessarily parents. Every communication sent home should be bilingual #fcpslearn
A4 I create a parent listserve every year. Am proactive informing parents of what's going on in class. Many parents also join Remind. The traditional phone call works pretty well too. #FCPSlearn
A4 - Flipgrid and seesaw. Also, when contacting home, I try to get assistance from others who might share the language of the parents. Use all resources! #fcpslearn
A4 fortunately as a Spanish teacher I can communicate with those families...our ELL teacher @loliveira55 is very helpful facilitating communication #FCPSlearn
@loliveira55! Congrats! I cannot wait to go check out the feed later tonight, but I am confident that #fcpslearn was rockin'! Looking forward to seeing all of you again tomorrow at 7 for #122edchat with @TechieTeachOtt!
A5 - I like Mike’s mention of face to face conversations. I’m a big fan of this but don’t do it as much as I should. I’m motivated now to do it more. #fcpslearn
