#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Good morning! Welcome to a special chat experience as #LeadUpChat & #FULLYCHARGED combine for a powerful morning of learning. We are thrilled to have @RosaIsiah, #FULLYCHARGED co-author, as our guest host. Please share your name & where you are from.
Welcome to #leadupchat !
My name is Rosa Isiah, proud principal in Cali and your guest moderator this morning. TY for joining us!
Please tell us about yourself.
Good morning #leadupchat! Marci from Sandy, UT. I partner with educators to change lives through the power of literacy with @LexiaLearning. Looking forward to the conversation!
So agree, @casas_jimmy!
Do we, as #Educators, also carry a responsibility, esp. in these turbulent times, to speak out against social injustices & to stand up against leaders that threaten children, underserved populations,& Democracy?
#Education#Culturize#LeadUpChat#WeLeadEd
#ThoughtForTheDay As educators, it isn’t just our responsibility to be model teachers & model leaders, but also model learners. It’s our obligation. We will never “get there.” We are always evolving...via #Culturize
Jenn here - instructional leader in VA, ready for #LeadUpChat and interested in #FullyCharged (have to learn more about this chat group - times/days/topics)
John Meehan from Washington DC. High school instructional coach and eleventh grade English teacher. Spent the summer getting #FULLYCHARGED and ready to change the world for when our new teachers return this Wednesday! #LeadUpChat
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
Hey #leadupchat! Louie jumping in from PA. 5th grade teacher in Philly. Just finished New Hire Orientation this week. Was great! Not usually coherent enough on a Saturday AM for chats... lol
My cat woke me up this morning with meowing. I thought I wanted to sleep in, but I realized it's just in time for #leadupchat! So, now my cat is chilling on my lap with me = #leadupcat
A1: given the diverging values around education; from parents, politicians, taxpayers, admins; I’m not sure there are many options here. Self-care (and leadership valuing self-care for their Ts) is paramount for Ts. #leadupchat
A1 Because teaching can be a 24-7 job if you allow it to be, some level of stress is inevitable. Using strategies to keep stress in check is necessary and very important. #leadupchat
A1: I don’t think it is inevitable, however I do believe we HAVE to do something different in our world and schools to prevent it. This job is hard and I don’t see it getting easier anytime soon. #leadupchat
A1: I think that most folks will say no because nothing is inevitable, but I say that all of us will get burned out at some point. The key is recovery. R & R and a great #PLN are critical for bringing you back. #leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A1: Definitely a big NO! T burnout is when Ts do not have the support they need. They have a boss instead of a leader. There’s a group instead of a team. T burnout occurs from a top down stance and no support in between with collaboration and support #LeadUpChat#fullycharged
A1. I love teaching, but teaching is hard. There were moments this week at New Hire Orientation that I was completely overwhelmed by the information being given to me. I was trying to put myself in the shoes of a newbie. We need to do all we can to lighten the load. #leadupchat
A1. I would like to believe that there is a lot leaders can do at the campus level to combat this. Taking care of the people who take care of the kids is critical. #leadupchat
A1. Stress in and of itself isn’t bad. When one isn’t provided an opportunity or support to channel the stress is when it becomes a problem. Leaders must ensure teachers have the tools and support to redirect their stress. #leadupchat
A1 Hope is such an important thing, so I am uncomfortable saying burn out is inevitable instead, I say let’s prepare our teams and teachers to avoid it and find comfort #leadupchat
A1: Maybe not inevitable but highly likely if the right supports are not put in place by leadership . If the building culture is good and the proper supports are put in place teachers can do some incredibly hard work without being stressed. #leadupchat
A1: I think it is unfortunate but it is not inevitable. As an ecosystem in education, we all have to consider what can be done to narrow our focus to those things that have the greatest impact on student learning. Do less and do it better. #leadupchat#fullycharged#ChaseImpact
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
A1. Teacher burnout is inevitable if we do not flip the paradigm to focus on mission, innovation, growth, self-care, and culture. This is not about tests this is about changing the world #leadupchat
A1: I think one of the big things we need to realize (and this is hard for me) is that we cannot do it all, all at once...some things take a lot more time than you realize!
#leadupchat#fullycharged
A1: Teacher burnout IS inevitable if we do not practice #mindfulness and self-care. We simply cannot overflow where there is no flow.
Don't give yourself away and run out of gas. Just like your car, you need fuel to run the race with fidelity! #leadupchat#fullycharged
A1: Perhaps not inevitable, but definitely likely. There is entirely too much focus on all the wrong things—tests, numbers, etc. Instead, the focus should be on developing passionate, critical thinkers—this comes through joy, inquiry, risk-taking, and truly learning. #leadupchat
A1. Just so happens I wrote a book about burnout and how to fight back from it (https://t.co/yolMww4uH4) Without some drastic changes in the conditions of the profession, a deliberate attempt to elevate it, & a renewed narrative that holds it in high esteem...yes. #leadupchat
A1. Stress is inevitable in any job, while thought of as a negative, some stress leads to critical conversations that make change. It’s the toxic stress that needs to be addressed in ed through building culture with growth opportunities and candid, radical dialogue #leadupchat
A1: Stress is definitely a thing… A real thing! We must be aware of it and how we manage it in order to avoid burnout. We must manage the stress not the other way around. #leadupchat
A1. I also think as long as teachers are underpaid the stresses of financial security create added burdens that horribly destabilize our schools #leadupchat
A1: This profession is very difficult at times. I don’t think it has to lead to burnout. There are a lot of factors that can lead to burnout too. I think culture is huge in this! Also adding self care, limiting initiatives, and remembering your purpose are important. #LeadUpChat
A1 It is not inevitable. Leaders must be as focused on retention of talent as they are recruitment. Creating the conditions for adults and students to thrive is the critical mission of leaders. Focusing on wellbeing + strengths #leadupchat
A1 For many, it feels like it. We can lighten the load but we HAVE to continue to advocate/risk for professional status, control over our classrooms and PD, and time to learn, evalaute, reflect, and change. No more shaming. #leadupchat
A1: I think when you look at all that educators are asked to do, it can be easy to burnout if you're doing it alone or on an ineffective team. When you've got people to rally with you, inspire you, and share the load it lessens the chance for burnout. #leadupchat
A1. Just so happens I wrote a book about burnout and how to fight back from it (https://t.co/yolMww4uH4) Without some drastic changes in the conditions of the profession, a deliberate attempt to elevate it, & a renewed narrative that holds it in high esteem...yes. #leadupchat
A1) The emotional and mental stress of being a teacher, or an educator, is so high. We must provide the necessary supports to help alleviate the demands. #leadupchat
A1: Stress is inevitable. School culture, unfunded mandates, the natural demands of working with students, and the challenges of new instructional strategies and continuous learning #LeadUpChat
A1: I think stress in life is inevitable. How we handle stress makes the difference. As edu leaders, our interactions can cause additional stress or help decrease the impact of stress. We should also model ways to reduce stress for ourselves. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
A1: I think there's two types of educators:
1) Innovators.
2) Status Keepers
The keepers of status quo will be stressed b/c change happens "to them" vs. creating the good shifts. /1
#leadupchat
A1 Burnout is when we begin to suffer in wellbeing, especially Purpose Wellbeing. We begin to make decisions and take actions counter to our values and mission when we are suffering in this area. Every leadership interaction should include a wellbeing conversation #leadupchat
A1. Stress is a part of all jobs, but burnout isn’t just physical. Burnout is mental and emotional also. It’s a stripping of the reward of why we all got into education in the first place... it leads to demoralization and that is why it is a problem. #leadupchat
A1. I believe that we must do everything in our power to create ideal cultures to grow the amazing folks we work with but, does a perpetual economic struggle for some diminish our efforts at times #leadupchat
Exactly! Learning how to manage that stress is going to be key...hence the resurgence of mindfulness and social-emotional learning for both students AND staff!
#leadupchat
A1: Stress is inevitable. School culture, unfunded mandates, the natural demands of working with students, and the challenges of new instructional strategies and continuous learning #LeadUpChat
A1. No. Mindfulness, perspective, and balance are essential. Teachers have very challenging jobs - but tapping into positive teacher networks like #LeadUpChat & #FULLYCHARGED helps inspire & remind us why we’re doing what we do. (And making time for outside interests helps!)
A1: "Inevitable" takes away the agency in teachers. Teaching is like a marathon: we need to balance self-awareness+self-care+Passion+Enthusiasm+so much more. When we see it is a long-term career built on dedication&constant renewal, avoiding burnout is in our control!
#leadupchat
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
A1) I believe this is when #leadership becomes paramount in making sure that the vision we have collectively created aligns with our day-to-day operations. #leadupchat
A1: Stressful situations can be addressed through a PLC, PLN, family time, diet, exercise, hobbies, and white space. We have to take time to recharge. #LeadUpChat
A1: Absolutely not. Stress is doing something you have to do that you don’t want to do. Teaching with passion should never be stressful. I feel the negativity among colleagues lead to burnout faster than anything else. STAY POSITIVE. STAY PASSIONATE. #leadupchat
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
“According to a survey by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, as noted in the report, deans of colleges of education said the No. 1 reason for the enrollment drop was the perception of teaching as an undesirable career.”How sad is this? Let’s change this!
A1.2: As an administrator, I am working hard to be cognizant of what I am asking of teachers, what I am putting on their plates and what I am taking off their plates as a trade-off. Constantly asking folks to do more with less leads to stress. #leadupchat
A1: where is that BALANCE! I think it is learned! My family is very understanding but they probably get the short end of the stick at times! I am getting better, but this is the start of year 27! Yikes getting old! #leadupchat
A1: Status Keepers express the view that they're "drowning".
----
That's because you can't sit still in a river.
----
#education is a river.
----
Flow with it.
Or get washed.
#leadupchat

A1 Teaching is tough, there is curriculum to be taught w curve balls thrown every minute We have to equip all w tools beyond academics ...for SEL, trauma etc along w self care for adults and coping strategies and a focus on relationship building #leadupchat
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
When our education situation causes us to forget our WHY and lose our passion, something must change. Evaluate what is within our sphere of influence and make adjustments there. #leadupchat#fullycharged
A1: I think there's two types of educators:
1) Innovators.
2) Status Keepers

A1. No. Mindfulness, perspective, and balance are essential. Teachers have very challenging jobs - but tapping into positive teacher networks like #LeadUpChat & #FULLYCHARGED helps inspire & remind us why we’re doing what we do. (And making time for outside interests helps!)
Yes, not always easy. If we channel that time and energy into focusing on the learners in our building & truly SEEING them—what a difference! Taking time to ask them: what are your hopes & dreams for this year? And making that a part of our hopes & dreams, too! #leadupchat
A1 We rely too much on a list of what others think is max performance in a role, teaching/leading. We burn out when we don't have the strengths for a role. We maximize performance/decrease burnout when we do what we do best and partner with those who compliment us #leadupchat
A1 People deal with stress in so many different ways which is why things that would stress out one person does not impact another. Recognizing our own threshold and being mindful of when we need to stop and regroup can help manage stress. #leadupchat
I think I'm seeing the balance shift in my new district. There is still much assessment and testing, but definitely a huge push for more student-centered instruction. I think we will find the balance... eventually. #leadupchat
A1. Teaching is a demanding job but also very rewarding. As an administrator, I must find ways for teachers to “see and feel” their impact upon kids and help them remember their “why”. Burnout only happens if you forget your “why” #leadupchat
Q1 According to a 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers, 61% of teachers are always stressed. Is teacher burnout in today’s educational setting inevitable? #leadupchat
A1. Stress is inevitable in any job, while thought of as a negative, some stress leads to critical conversations that make change. It’s the toxic stress that needs to be addressed in ed through building culture with growth opportunities and candid, radical dialogue #leadupchat
This my friends is what happens when a profession is demoralized and a negative narrative rules the day...this is our #call2action4ed#leadupchat#FullyCharged!
It’s time to elevate the profession!!!
“According to a survey by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, as noted in the report, deans of colleges of education said the No. 1 reason for the enrollment drop was the perception of teaching as an undesirable career.”How sad is this? Let’s change this!
A1. Stress is inevitable in any job, while thought of as a negative, some stress leads to critical conversations that make change. It’s the toxic stress that needs to be addressed in ed through building culture with growth opportunities and candid, radical dialogue #leadupchat
A2 When we experience burnout, suffer in wellbeing, we live out our strengths in an unhealthy, unproductive way and those around us are the recipients. #leadupchat
A2 I allowed stress to take a lead role for me my first year as a principal. I was not able to lead in a positive way because of it. It had a negative affect on everyone around me at school and at home. #leadupchat
A2: T burnout drives negative feelings, resentment, and lack of enthusiasm for the field. There isn’t the drive to commit to what is best for Ss. Comply and get by for status quo. #FullyCharged#LeadUpChat
A1: Teaching is hard It is not the “hard” that leads to burnout, it’s the hard without worthwhile that puts us in a place of b-out. How do we achieve worthwhile? Support and purpose. Support lets us know we are not alone. Purpose lets us know we are going somewhere. #leadupchat
A1: I think teacher stress is inevitable, because dedicated people are attracted to the profession. This is why we have summer! Burnout doesn't have to be inevitable if teachers take care of themselves and learn to be proactive rather than reactive. #leadupchat
Q2: stress gets mirrored. Joy gets mirrored. You unknowingly set the tone of your culture by your body language, ton of voice and choice of words. #leadupchat
A2 WIth the end result being lots of employee turnover, burnout and stress leads to inconsistency, resentment, lack of focus on the job and the kids, and lack of stability in the building/community #leadupchat
A2: Stress can directly impact students. Many students come to school from challenging situations and a calm classroom that has routines and a positive culture can make a difference in student understanding. #LeadUpChat
Great point. Our mindset greatly affects how we deal with bumps in the road. If we allow ourselves to be thrown off the horse, then throw a fit trying to get back on, life will be a long road. If we learn to pick ourselves back up seamlessly, our Ss will benefit. #leadupchat
A1 Information overload is a major contributor to Tchr stress. Schools must be intentional around providing support for self-care, mentoring, regular check-ins, & space for discussion + collaboration for Ts throughout school year (not just during first few weeks). #leadupchat
A2 stressedteachers can lance out at Ss. They are more apt to mis identify the true causes of misbehavior when stressed. Their own filters shut down #leadupchat
Stress and anxiety are real illnesses, affecting y60% of HS students and many teachers and administrators. We need to make therapy available and a respected option.
#leadupchathttps://t.co/9td2zVw02X
A2. If teachers are burned out they lose their passion for kids - teaching w/o passion is not good for kids. We must help teachers find that passion! #leadupchat#FullyCharged
I honestly believe and am thinking about even launching a podcast about the value of education because we are at a crisis point our schools have never been better yet the profession has a poor reputation.#leadupchat
A2: something I’m learning. Navigating our emotional triggers and keeping them in check becomes much more challenging when we are stressed and burning out. Our triggers block student success #EduGladiators
A2: In many ways, we set the atmosphere. If we are stressed and burnt out, students will feel that, too. Also, a stressed teacher cannot be a fully effective teacher. One of the many reasons it's essential that we support, respect, and value teachers. #leadupchat
A2: I end up making poor decisions because I do not take the time to get the whole story...that leads to bruised relationships that I need to mend because I lashed out due to my stress and frustration.
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A1) Being active in the reflection process, we have to ask ourselves, when we look at our systems what are we going to give ourselves permission to let go of🤔🤔🤔 Many times stress comes with trying to hold on to the old while embracing the unknown aspect of change. #leadupchat
A2 i know im guilty of this...when I’m stressed I ditch my instructional and management best practices and revert to what’s comfortable, the way I experienced K-12 education. I tighten the figurative vise, assert control and ditch any semblance of voice and choice #leadupchat
Good morning! I am Alicia Sewell, an instructional Technology Coach for Tuscaloosa City Schools in Tuscaloosa, AL. Just so happen to see the chat on my TL & thought I’d join in. Hope to gain tons of insight from everyone involved. #leadupchat
A2 Every interaction is an opportunity to get in front of burnout and suffering. Ask each other "how's life?". Burnout is often caused by conditions outside the workplace but affects our performance #leadupchat
A2: Well, first and foremost we don't want to take our stress out on our kids. That is an unacceptable breach of trust. Stress, when managed carefully, can benefit the classroom. We can create great instruction and teach our students how to manage their own stress. #leadupchat
A2: stress gets mirrored. Joy gets mirrored. You unknowingly set the tone of your culture by your body language, tone of voice and choice of words. #leadupchathttps://t.co/G3Hg63duPj#LeadUpChat

A2: #leadupchat This is a real concern. If you are stressed to the point of only being able to focus on the bad in life, you will live life like it is bad. If you are not happy at work, your students will avoid you like the plague . No learning can happen for students.
A1) Being active in the reflection process, we have to ask ourselves, when we look at our systems what are we going to give ourselves permission to let go of🤔🤔🤔 Many times stress comes with trying to hold on to the old while embracing the unknown aspect of change. #leadupchat
This is #leadership! What tools, training and time can we provide that will empower teachers to remove those things that don’t lead to the desired impact? Do less and do it better. #ChaseImpact#leadupchat#fullycharged
A1.2: As an administrator, I am working hard to be cognizant of what I am asking of teachers, what I am putting on their plates and what I am taking off their plates as a trade-off. Constantly asking folks to do more with less leads to stress. #leadupchat
Let me be but - if you would not criticize someone one with a wheelchair, then don’t judge people who suffer from stress and anxiety.
#leadupchathttps://t.co/9td2zVw02X
A2 Stress can result in lack of focus so that immediately impacts Ss. Vague communication, inconsistent response, lack of attention to details can impact everyone around you. #leadupchat
A2: When folks are stressed they just don't make the best decisions. Teachers start just going through the motions and start not being "present" with their students and teams . Kids sense that , they feel that ; they respond to that. #leadupchat
A2: a teachers patience is key with this. The amount of trauma some kids come to us with they need someone who cares and has patience to work through that with them. Not someone short fused and not empathetic. #LeadUpChat
A2 i know im guilty of this...when I’m stressed I ditch my instructional and management best practices and revert to what’s comfortable, the way I experienced K-12 education. I tighten the figurative vise, assert control and ditch any semblance of voice and choice #leadupchat
A2: It's important to NOT let your stress spill over onto the kids. If we are carrying TOO many ugly monkeys, it's hard to focus on our appreciations and choose joy.
We must name and claim resentments, so we can work through them and let them go! #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A2: I teach a coaching session called "Live and Lead at Your Best." The premise is simple and we can't expect to take care of students and improve outcomes unless we have a staff that is taken care of too #leadupchat
A2. Teacher burnout demoralized teachers & strips them of the agency they once believed they had. It reduces their value to a singular measurement: student performance of high stakes assessments. It is contagious. Spreads like wildfire...look at the teacher shortage! #leadupchat
A2: In many ways, we set the atmosphere. If we are stressed and burnt out, students will feel that, too. Also, a stressed teacher cannot be a fully effective teacher. One of the many reasons it's essential that we support, respect, and value teachers. #leadupchat
A1 “Numerous surveys and studies confirm that occupational pressures and fears are far and away the leading source of stress for American adults and that these have steadily increased over the past few decades. “ #LeadUpChat
A1 workplace stress represents a variety of factors but I see the hurried adult/educator as being worrisome and we keep piling on more - mental health support is more intervention than prevention https://t.co/RlJAdZ0Dxj#LeadUpChat
A1: I also believe it is incumbent upon districts, schools, experienced Ts, & Admin to mitigate the conditions that lead to T burnout. We know what harms us-we need to protect those in our care, ESP our teams, so they can do the best job they can for Ss!
#leadupchat#FullyCharged
A1 continued: Example for #SimpleAdminAction: When a T is not feeling well/sick & we have a faculty mtg, does that T REALLY need to attend? If it's w/in MY power to excuse a T in that situation, I will. Better for T, better for colleagues, better for Ss.
#leadupchat#FullyCharged
A2: Stressed out teachers lead to stressed out students. In this hectic world, we might need to teach "mindfulness"/ meditation techniques. Here's a tip:
Sit in silence for one minute and notice, but don't react; gradually extend time to 5 min. #leadupchat
A2 I’m adding a dose of vulnerability here, I’ve been there and seen my students give up on a lessons, feel unloved, the negative behavior escalates, MY delivery was not where it needed to be, I could go on, and again need to write a book about “My Story”. #LeadUpChat
A2 when stressed one can’t think clearly and reacts to situations that can snowball to behavior issues and get everyone working from their amygdala not the areas of brain that promote learning and growth #leadupchat
A1. Stress is inevitable in any job, while thought of as a negative, some stress leads to critical conversations that make change. It’s the toxic stress that needs to be addressed in ed through building culture with growth opportunities and candid, radical dialogue #leadupchat
Agreed, although many times teachers don’t want to let go of things but feel obligated to take new things on which doubles stress. Teaching folks to let go could be a stress reducer #leadupchat
That's awesome! As I work in an IB school abroad, we have a beautiful balance. But when I was in the US, it was all about testing. The joy was being sucked out of all learning. I'm thrilled to hear it's shifting for you! #leadupchat
A2) When people are stressed - regardless of who they are - they react differently to other people. We get short, make problems bigger than they really are, take things personally, etc.
I think it's important to remember that this happens to kids, too.
#leadupchat
A2(2): Make sure to talk to your students about stress. If you are stressed, have a conversation with them about why and tell them what you are going to do about it. It can be a great conversation that demonstrates vulnerability. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A2: As a principal and lead learner I try to recognize when staff has reached that point! I often ask my office staff/counselors how the staff is doing. These people help gage the temperature of my school. I am not afraid to be the biggest cheerleader for staff! #leadupchat
A2. @ToddWhitaker says “when the principal sneezes, the whole school catches a cold.” The way that we carry ourselves dramatically affects the people we serve. #LeadUpChat#FULLYCHARGED
A2: Behavior is communication. Adult and child alike. Stressed educators carry a hammer and everything looks like a nail. What time of year do your office referrals start to uptick? November? January? How do WE intervene so it doesn't start to impact kids? #leadupchat
A2. Teacher burnout demoralizes teachers & strips them of the agency they once believed they had. It reduces their value to a singular measurement: student performance of high stakes assessments. It is contagious. Spreads like wildfire...look at the teacher shortage! #leadupchat
A2: Ex- My daughter hates driving with me in the car because she senses that it stresses me out even if I don't say anything. I cause her stress (because her driving scares me). Students can feel what Teachers are bringing in. Relax & have fun learning! #leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
I believe enthusiasm is free and it’s contagious....but so is negativity. Educational leaders must relentlessly focus on creating a culture that highlights the former. This job is the hardest in the world, and the most important. #LeadUpChat
AMEN, my friend! As leaders, if we can take things off of the plates of our teachers BEFORE we pile something else on, we can help mitigate and manage unnecessary stress!
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A1: I also believe it is incumbent upon districts, schools, experienced Ts, & Admin to mitigate the conditions that lead to T burnout. We know what harms us-we need to protect those in our care, ESP our teams, so they can do the best job they can for Ss!
#leadupchat#FullyCharged
Much of the stress that educators feel comes from expectations that are not reasonable. Sometimes we ask teachers to do things that if any other professionals were asked to do they would walk......just saying. #leadupchat
I do think we need to rethink how we as leaders structure the school experience to reduce stress as much as possible, now that is complicated because what people need varies but we must always work on this #leadupchat
A2: Keeping to the idea of support and purpose combating burnout, without we are lost. When we are lost, we cannot serve kids. So we have to stay found. We have to have leaders with genuine support. And we have to have selves with courage to find and chase our purpose #leadupchat
Something I’m chewing on; I’m wondering about the origins of the idiom you used. I’m fearful of its origins. I know you aren’t intending anything there; it just triggered me. #leadupchat
A2. You get what you model. If you can’t take care of yourself, it will have a drastic impact on the relationships with those most closely surrounding you. We have to be mindful that as Ts we are impressionable to stress and piling on another thing, but Ss much more #leadupchat
A2. If definitely does! Educators are human, with so much going on to contribute to stress. We need to model appropriate management of stress and leave it locked in our vehicles when we enter school so our kiddos see the best version of ourselves. #leadupchat
A2 Leaders should include questions/discussion about wellbeing in formal and informal feedback conversations. This kind of discussion can provide great insight into performance changes both positive and negative. #leadupchat
A1: IMO, this profession is HARD and if you put your all into it, your students, and their well-being, it will take its toll on you mentally, emotionally, & physically. That’s a fact. Being a risk taking, innovative, advocating educator ain’t easy. #leadupchat
That's a great point Margo. We have to coach people to better boundaries at times. I like asking, "If you say YES to this, then what will you have to say NO to?" #leadupchat
A2: kids are coming to us in droves already filled with many types of trauma- seen and unseen. A stressed teacher only feeds their trauma more. #leadupchat
A3: To help prevent it, be a true leader. Leading is not about being in control. It’s about empowering—which means you create an environment where teachers (and students!) can cultivate their OWN autonomy, agency, and self-control. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A3 as leaders, it’s important to share the responsibility evenly. Don’t always go to the same people for assistance. Also, build in some flex time for staff that go the extra mile.
I remember at my new teacher orientation quite a few years ago, the head of HR advised us to take care of ourselves. He said that actually helps the district, because they don't have to then hire subs who don't have same relationships w/ Ss. #leadupchat
A3: Be willing to SLOW DOWN and be less of a task master. Pick up on verbal and non verbal cues. Get out there and chat with your staff about their health. Model work live balance. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
Over years, I’ve seen people lose their jobs b/c of stress, take inappropriate actions w/ children &?adults, & as they feel a loss of control their control urges accelerate- that works against healthy communities in classrooms, principal offices, even supt offices #leadupchat
A3: Collaborate with grade level teams. Stop by for pop up visits and give the T a break for five minutes. Establish a positive culture of support for all. Coach and work WITH staff! Utilize PTO for an incentive. #LeadUpChat
A3. Leaders must help make schools a place where teachers demonstrate their passion and not a job - make school fun, get teacher input, have teacher led PD, spirit days - let kids see our excitement! #leadupchat#FullyCharged
Educators lead students in developing the sorts of attitudes, beliefs, and practices that you would want them to have, So what educators model impact student achievement attitudes, beliefs, and practices. #leadupchat
A3 Try to buffer and balance what is going on to the plate and what is coming off. Being out and about and really listening to what is happening and reaching out. It can be difficult for staff to admit they are overwhelmed. #leadupchat
A3: establish true relationships so true support can be given. Give the gift of time as much as possible. Recognize and celebrate staff much as possible. #leadupchat
A2: Everything we do affects students. If you see yourself drowning, seek help. It’s important to keep your focus on your WHY. Why are you an educator? Who are you doing this for? What & who do you want your students to become? If we falter, so will they. #leadupchat
A2. Burnt out teachers pass it along to their students. Students may become anxious, overwhelmed, or disengaged because the teacher is not buying in. #leadupchat
A3 appreciate them in meaningful ways. I did an optional book study on 5 languages of appreciation in the work place. I learned a lot more about the needs of my teachers and how to support them #leadupchat
Good point. I think it’s our obligation to try to understand the struggles of those around us and try to lighten the load whenever possible. #LeadUpChat#FullyCharged
A3 Building trusting relationships lead to collaborative interactions. Knowing someone will allow you to ‘see’ if/when stress creeps in. Should be less stress in a collaborative environment. #leadupchat
I have been asked more than once to slow down! Small things tend to fall through the cracks when we try to do too much all the time...
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A3: Be willing to SLOW DOWN and be less of a task master. Pick up on verbal and non verbal cues. Get out there and chat with your staff about their health. Model work live balance. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A3: Get to know your staff! Be in classrooms where the teaching is occurring. Be thoughtful and transparent. Engage in honesty and humility. Have a barometer for staff stress and be quick to the fire while it is small. #leadupchat
We can’t have this discussion on teacher burnout without thinking about historical policy impact on the profession. We are suffering from a repeated discrediting of the profession. Please check out my latest blog post when you can. Here’s an excerpt: #leadupchat#FullyCharged
AND...what if we provided teachers with the tools, training and time that empowered them to decide what was coming off the plate? Sometimes they are holding onto “stuff” that is gobbling up time without really leading to impact. #leadupchat#fullycharged#ChaseImpact
A3: Know your people. Serve your people. Love your people. Administrator plates are full but get in to classrooms and step in. If a teacher needs a minute, give them a break. You can tell the healthiness of a school culture by how much the adults laugh together. #leadupchat
A3: Riding the support and purpose wave here, but leaders have to engage T’s on their “purpose path” and then join their journey for support. Each has a purpose and sometimes just having someone know our purpose is all the support we need to make it worthwhile. #leadupchat
A3: Stay ahead of the stress. Let them know they are loved. Show them. I gave my staff scented hand gel and bath salts for a foot soak to encourage self-care and #mindfulness.
Let them know that we value wellBEing.
https://t.co/EiyvAxXlos#leadupchat#FullyCharged
Agree. I don’t even use the word. We have established a collaborative culture at our school where change is expected and usually all the great new ideas come from our staff & students I just need to find a way to say yes! #LeadUpChat
A3. Be bold enough to make change. You could put every support in place possible but the same issues will still be there. Until we are willing to say, This must be different, all we are doing is providing bandaids and elongating the burnout process #leadupchat
Just because the phone rings doesn't mean that you have to answer it.
You may not be able to control what happens around you, but you can control how you react. Don't move for 1 min. and notice how you want to react (to itches, etc.) control your reactions. #leadupchat
A3: Team Building events, celebrate small wins, invest in aspiring leaders, create a culture of learning, encourage collaborative teams, & chocolate #LeadUpChat
A3 Leaders must go beyond quotes/platitudes and incorporate an intentional approach to creating a thriving school/district. Once wellbeing and strengthsbased discussions become part of the culture everyone begins to care about each other/how they uniquely contribute #leadupchat
A3.2: and following up with “how can I provide you support in the next week? What support can I provide that would make the upcoming week easier for you?” #leadupchat
A2: When a T is burnt out, they are in a dark, negative place. Negativity is like cancer. It will eat away from the inside. If we, as colleagues & SCH leaders, do not stay aware&proactive, such negativity will harm Ss, our teams,& the impact of our work!
#leadupchat#FullyCharged
I would like my principal in my room more often. Providing feedback and encouraging students by showing her own passion for their learning. #ObserveMe#leadupchat
A3. I think admin can support teachers by staying current and providing relevant resources and support when necessary. A little patience, affirmation, and kind words also go a long way! #leadupchat
It is possible to be urgent and patient at the same time. You urgently move toward change, but not so fast that you forget about the people around you or skip crucial steps that will make your vision enduring. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A3: Engage in frequently open and honest dialogue with the school community. Actively listen and support those in need. We must be accessible and present. #LeadUpChat
A3. Encourage innovation, growth, find time, cover their classes, let someone leave early once in a while, write a message say, "I understand, this sounds hard." Ask,"How can I help?" #leadupchat
Q3 it’s cliche but you have to build trust among your staff. They have to feel comfortable coming to you and they have to be comfortable enough with you for you to approach them when you see they’re off. Listen first to understand rather than speaking to be understood #leadupchat
A1: Teaching is hard, but burnout is not inevitable. Having a caring administration who takes steps to not overburden teachers and who can help when teachers are overwhelmed are ways to keep teacher burnout from occuring. Having a supportive #PLN is a must! #leadupchat#edchat
A2) We must remember that every thought we think 💭 is creating our future. This is especially true when the thoughts we think directly impact the students that are sitting in front of us. Our thoughts become their realities. #leadupchat
Something else I am chewing on in this discussion; how often do we reward competent Ts with more work and responsibilities without any extra compensation? #leadupchat
A3 Build a faculty atmosphere that is caring, supportive from Day 1 , a family! Be present! Be in the halls and classrooms! Build transparency at all levels. Listen to your teachers. Be vulnerable as a principal! How do you build that ❤️, ask @TechNinjaTodd ! #LeadUpChat
You speak the truth, my friend! Sometimes, we need to provide the support as well as the guidance to remove those non-essential time-suckers!
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
AND...what if we provided teachers with the tools, training and time that empowered them to decide what was coming off the plate? Sometimes they are holding onto “stuff” that is gobbling up time without really leading to impact. #leadupchat#fullycharged#ChaseImpact
A3: take a 15 minute break even at scho ...I try to encourage this with staff. No email, no correcting papers, no cell phone! Read a book, put the music on, walk a lap or two around the track. #leadupchat
A3 figure out to the greatest degree possible how to give time back vs taking it away - just strategies to help Ts use the bathroom when needed, slow down the pace, engage Ts w admin in looking for stress reduction solutions that keep kids at Center #leadupchat
A3. Support!!! This can be in saying “yes”, teaching classes so Ts can collaborate, listening, having chocolate. Don’t ask others to take on something if you aren’t willing to do to the same. #leadupchat
A3. Focus on how you can improve working conditions for teachers. More support and time as they need it, access to the resources they need, and roll up your sleeves and help. Get in the trenches and coach beside them. Usually works for me. #leadupchat
A3 celebrate the positives often, be present, assist always teach self care strategies. I am working on modeling balance , a tough one, currently I tend to ask ... what are you going to do do yourself today? And I try my best to follow up the next day #leadupchat
It is not cliche it is the right thing to do. I think the challenge comes with being a leader is stopping the running dialogue of our stresses to fully take in what someone is saying #leadupchat
A3b. At the same time. A little tough love and encouragement to challenge teachers to do the best for their students would be super beneficial as well! #leadupchat
A3. I think admin can support teachers by staying current and providing relevant resources and support when necessary. A little patience, affirmation, and kind words also go a long way! #leadupchat
Many of us don't have the courage to say how we feel out loud to people we respect, but we all give clues to our mental condition in many non-verbal ways. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
Q3: Support new & veteran Ts by respecting their expertise, champion their risk-taking, push them to see their highest potential, LISTEN to understand, trust their competence, give feedback & praise. We can’t do this alone. #leadupchat
A3: Be kind. Don't think you know what's going on. Build relationships of trust, so it's not weird. Don't make people do meaningless work on top of everything else. Talk to people. Seek help if needed. CARE. #leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A3; It boils down to relationships for me. Communication is key . There have been times when we have navigated some very treacherous waters by my saying " I don't have the answers just a lot of questions & the willingness to listen. How are we going to get thru this?" #leadupchat
A3:
Leaders have to be in classrooms, with students and without students.
With students to provide necessary supports and figure out needed resources.
Without students to have REAL conversations with Ts. Checking on the person not just the professional.
#leadupchat
A3 It’s also important to be able to notice stress in Ss which some Ts do not feel equipped to recognize or think that this plays a role in their overall presence at school. #leadupchat
A3: Advise new Ts to take care of themselves. When you leave the building at the end of the day, pop by and advise your staff "Don't stay too late." Notice those who consistently do stay late & ask "How can I help?" #leadupchat
A2: Stressed adults lead to stressed children. If a teacher is stressed and on edge, his/her classroom is likely to have a tense atmosphere that can interfere with the learning goals. #leadupchat#edchat#selfcare#educators
Q4 Are teacher preparation programs doing enough to prepare teachers for the emotional demands of our work with trauma-impacted students? What types of supports should be in place to prevent secondary trauma and new-teacher burnout?
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
This! Leaders at all levels...and this includes those leading learning in the classroom...must consider impact. “I am saying no to this so that I can say yes to this”—because I know that this will lead to the impact I am seeking. #leadupchat#fullycharged#ChaseImpact
That's a great point Margo. We have to coach people to better boundaries at times. I like asking, "If you say YES to this, then what will you have to say NO to?" #leadupchat
A3: #leadupchat Be visible. Be present in day to day school teaching, listen and always evaluate your day. Are you asking more of others than of yourself? If so, it can lead to burnout
Gotta run #leadupchat Have a great morning and CARE for each other daily. Sometimes WE are the source of stress in our buildings. We can do this together.
I agree but in keeping myself accountable I need to have demonstrated when I say that my offer is sincere due to building and establishing trust #leadupchat
I think one of the big ones I got from @DanielPink at #NAESP18 was that we can only have 1-3 Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) at a time...any more and we will not get any of them accomplished!

A3. Working as a job-embedded instructional coach has put me in touch with some incredible teachers at @OConnellHS. Their amazing work inspires me to work harder every day! And the collegial network of support helps everyone be their personal best. #LeadUpChat#FULLYCHARGED
It's actually something I am working on. One way is to intentionally embed rest points into the work. Lunches, celebrations, entertaining vignettes and coffee breaks are great ways to make everyone slow down. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A3). I think it’s also imperative to remember that if we areNOT growing and changing as an organization, we are also creating stress for some! Key is balance & students needs first! #leadupchat
I think it is fair to say that so many leaders take time on Saturday to do this many of their teams will experience less stress because this weighs heavily on all of us. #leadupchat
A4: College prep needs to be modified to address the “new” Ss that we are teaching in our schools. Our Ss now are not coming with the same supports, backgrounds, but instead come from what they see through media. Leading to the impact of where we now should focus! #LeadUpChat
Yep. Has to be genuine and we have to follow through if there is a request otherwise it’s empty words and whatever trust has been established may be damaged. #Leadupchat
A4. I wish teacher prep programs could do more but until you are a full time teacher it’s hard to replicate. Leaders must build culture of teamwork, support and regular ways to help new teachers. #fullycharged#leadupchat
Q4 Are teacher preparation programs doing enough to prepare teachers for the emotional demands of our work with trauma-impacted students? What types of supports should be in place to prevent secondary trauma and new-teacher burnout?
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A1 also we need to not reinforce that the workaholic is the model for our work - people need to know that immediacy of response to every concern is not equal - distinguish the critical need for communication vs that which doesn’t need a 24/7 response #empathize#leadupchat
A4: We have some excellent teacher prep programs in our state. As a profession, we need more staff, training, programs, and support. A whole child approach is important, but it takes more than a teacher, principal, and counselor. #LeadUpChat
A4) This answer is a hard, "NO." All teacher prep programs need to add two concepts to their programs: 1) Socio-emotional learning and care. 2) Educational law (not just EC law).
#leadupchat

A4:School districts need to include staff wellness programs as a part of their menus of services as well as Cultural proficiency and trauma informed/restorative practices. #leadupchat
Q4: There needs to be programs in place that will not only help Ss deal with emotional trauma, but Ts as well. Counselors & social workers are not being utilized as they should. They’re being pulled in so many directions that they can’t do what they’re intended to. #leadupchat
A3 (1): Combating T burnout is 1 of our most important roles as SCH leaders!
#1: Stay aware & in-tune to know who is facing personal/professional challenges
#2: Help them be self-aware & recognize the challenges
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A3 (2):
#3: Support them personally & w/ outside interventions
#4: LOTS & LOTS of check-ins; continued 1-1 counseling
#5: Document-Just In Case!
#6: IF that burnout is beyond our scope of control, then our job entails protecting our Ss-perhaps through HR
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
#A4: I think engaging on emotional development of adults is crucial. We need to explore emotional triggers to lessen the impact on the work we do; and to identify those triggers as warnings to “refill our tank” as teachers. #leadupchat
A3: Know their staff & build relationships that allow teachers to feel safe expressing stress & potential burnout. Administrators should be present & aware of what is happening in classrooms. Trust and feeling supported go a long way. #leadupchat#fullycharged#edchat#educators
I so struggle with this, but have found the value in disconnecting. It recharges me! Still... We must not do a HARD TURN OFF OF THE BRAIN when we leave school, but must find balance. Teaching requires time, but living life to the fullest also requires rest. #leadupchat
Perfect focus and @DanielPink gets so much right about creating healthy spaces for adults to do their work w commitment, care, and depth - autonomy is critical - people are happiest when they feel they can align their work w goals but w autonomy #LeadUpChat
In reply to
@tsschmidty, @timwolffSSD, @Mrjonresendez, @DanielPink, @DanielPink
A4: Probably not. Self care should be a class unto itself and it should be embedded in the entire teacher prep curriculum. There are so many things in those programs we don't need that can be thrown out for something more important. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A3: be an active listener and go on instinct with staff when stress level is high! I have learned to trust my gut! Always better to be proactive then reactive in schools! #leadupchat
Three years ago, I walked in as the 3rd principal in 3 years and it has been a solid reminder. As I now begin my third year there, I use it to remind me that what I do every day is not about me but about us. #leadupchat
Q4: It’s like we have the resources (social workers & counselors), but we aren’t allowing them to do their jobs are there aren’t enough in place to take on the growing problems. #leadupchat

#leadupchat
A4 There is more to be done however it is hard to imagine in a college environment, hard to replicate ... perhaps a trauma class that goes deep would help, CPI training etc we have to start equipping the tool boxes before the crisis occurs #leadupchat
Leaders—we must pay attention to this request! #LeadLikeLincoln and circulate among the troops. Our presence in classrooms signals that student learning is our top priority. #leadupchat#fullycharged#ChaseImpact
I would like my principal in my room more often. Providing feedback and encouraging students by showing her own passion for their learning. #ObserveMe#leadupchat
A4: so blown away by the internship reqs of school counselors compared to Ts & Admin. No single thing impacts the classroom like trauma. I think we have to move away from theory based and have college Ss in the classroom observing & working with counselors in year 1 #leadupchat
A3. One thing we've been thinking about is trying to look at what non school businesses do for their employees in terms of benefits and perks and finding ways we can build things like that into our school. Giving teachers the gift of time and reducing outside stress #leadupchat
A3) Be energetic/passionate about the work and make sure that you incorporate an avenue to have #FUN!!! #Education is social and should incorporate a level of active engagement that revitalizes the social, emotional, and academic aspects of learning. #leadupchat
A4 Admin needs to keep open communication with a S’s teacher when a tramtic situation has happened in there lives...we teach so many and need to know of situations that they are aware of so we ARE prepared to help them and watch them as well. #LeadUpChat
A4: I did not feel prepared by my education for trauma-impacted students, but I was prepared by my own exp. w/ counseling and Self Help books. To prep Ts, watch/ show this: https://t.co/JCXg0vhvxg.

A4: It's a difficult area to prepare for as a college student because the foundation of trust is missing which means S's won't fully open up to interns. However, it would be nice to see a heavier focus on SEL awareness, knowledge and strategies. #leadupchat
A4. Teacher preparation programs must emphasize teaching about trauma and much more about time management and the power in failure. Cooperating teachers and school leaders should have a more active role in preparing new teachers for the profession #leadupchat
A4. There is no way a teacher prep program can prepare teachers for the demands of the job. Many do a wonderful job! Still, full immersion in the classroom for extended periods of time is the only way, whether that is in Student Teaching or in the First Year. #leadupchat
Q4 Are teacher preparation programs doing enough to prepare teachers for the emotional demands of our work with trauma-impacted students? What types of supports should be in place to prevent secondary trauma and new-teacher burnout?

Prevent? Stop piling on extracurricular expectations. There’s an unwritten rule that you must take on more than you can handle or face a bad schedule, transfer, or even a non-renewed contract. And these fears are justified in many cases. Sadly. #LeadUpChat
A4 Teacher ed programs are not adequately addressing the "emotional" demands of teaching. We need to help educators, in general, understand how to create the emotional conditions that lead to maximizing our own performance #leadupchat
Embrace your mistakes. Perfection is poisonous and unattainable. Just keep making progress and model perseverance for your students. Make some struggles visible so they can know these things just make you stronger.
Dealing with trauma - Superintendents - I’m talking to you: I was in a school two weeks ago where a student was murdered., another died on the bus, and a parent was killed. In the past year, only one central office person was at the school.

A4 It is difficult to prepare in a classroom for the emotional demands of the job. Support at the school level needs to be in place and new teachers encouraged to use those supports. #leadupchat
A4: They need much more time with hands-on, authentic experiences in the classroom. There should also be seminars/discussions about balance and setting boundaries for self-care, and perhaps veteran teachers offering tips on different methods that have helped them. #leadupchat

A4: Mentors galore! Also teacher prep programs that utilize people from the field to educate those going in to the field. Your doctor's first time in a hospital isn't day one of residency...likewise aspiring teachers need embedded classroom experience from semester 1. #leadupchat

The connotation behind visiting a counselor should changed. Nothing is WRONG with a S for visiting a counselor. Locating C offices throughout the hallways. Interactions between Cs and Ss can occur between periods. Go to the students; don’t wait on them to go to you. #leadupchat

#leadupchat A4 wouldn’t it be great if there was a new teacher course devoted to helping to streamline things. They teach pedagogy text book style, new teachers need the cheat sheet.

A4) Something to consider for teacher preparation programs is a counseling course on how to deal with emotional students. As leaders, we can also provide professional learning sessions that include more emotional and motivational support for students. #leadupchat
A5 Reaching out can be difficult when you are the new kid on the block. Admin needs to help with providing connections to get it started. Providing time for people to meet and build those relationships is crucial as well. #leadupchat
A4: Practice mindfulness to improve learning. Educators need to slow down, breathe and experience the craft. So many pros doing great things, take notice. Read this - https://t.co/KeSdMB5Gbo - #leadupchat#fullycharged
A4.2: We partnered with @TanagerPlace and @HotchkinTonya to provide ongoing PD around ACEs this year for our staff. Eye opening and incredibly relevant. Book study, community partnership, anything to help your teachers build capacity! #leadupchat
A5. I think this can be tricky because if educators are feeling stressed or burnt out then this can seem like one more demand on their time. It helps for leaders to model and build in time for this to happen. #leadupchat
A4: T-prep programs are not all consistent; some are better than others. Typically, T-prep programs are 1-1.5 yrs. We need longer S-T training programs so S-Ts can work longer w/ trauma-impacted Ss while they still have the supports w/IN S-Ting programs.

#leadupchat@mr_middle_2 Yes, definitely. There is great research/data on how wellbeing, 5 specific elements, impacts performance and workplace engagement. Unfortunately, in ed we too often consider them "soft" measures rather than "leading" measures.
A5: We do little events like "cake at break" and I try to walk through as many classrooms during my prep periods as I can. I check in with a peer and say HI to the kids. It recharges me and can break tension if there is any with the teacher or classroom. #leadupchat#FullyCharged

Q5: I always try to be the person I needed when I was a child. I speak & uplift, I praise & correct, I smile & hug, I give respect (no matter the age), & I speak life into their existence. I think it’s simple: genuinely be there for them. #leadupchat
A4: I just attended 2 training sessions about trauma, ACEs, and mental illness. These sessions/topics should be mandatory aspects of teacher prep programs. Sending unprepared teachers into classrooms is unfair to teachers & students. #leadupchat#fullycharged#edchat#noburnout
Truth - my kid is creative director in hard core media firm in NYC - they insist on downtime/ vacation often because they know creativity is at its best when brain is fresh/recharged .. imagine that attitude -US Ts spend more time teaching than many other nations #leadupchat
A2 Ts are human...our own behavior is impacted when stressed + this will transfer to our classrooms. Ss may not receive feedback from Tchr + any student behavior that can be redirected w/ a convo can be seen as problematic by stressed Ts. #leadupchat
A4: I think teacher programs need more time in schools and classrooms. BT’s need support and mentors and admin must build relationships w/ them to provide strong suppot. New T’s in our schools need mentors/buddies to learn culture and community. #LeadUpChat
A5: making sure your mentoring program is set-up correctly is certainly a jumping point. I’m also tossing this idea that “it’s hard to feel supported if you are never seen.” Admin and coaches just truly have to be as visible as the paint on the wall #leadupchat

That is a really good idea. I have plans to check in more and reach out more as well. I feel like I dropped the ball last year with some of our staff who are more difficult to approach. #Onward#upward#Leadupchat
A1: When I began teaching in 1990, I couldn’t believe how difficult the job was. I remember completing a survey for my university & stating that I did not feel fully prepared (Do you ever until you hit the “real world”?). I know it is 100X’s more stressful now! #leadupchat
A5: It's all about relationships. Treat others w/ respect. Actively listen when they're speaking. Make eye contact. Honor opinions, even if they differ from yours. Build dialogue, which builds trust. And trust opens the door to true relationships. #leadupchat
A5 It is vital that schools create campus-based professional learning communities (PLCs) where educators can get together to share, collaborate and support each other in their practice #leadupchat#fullycharged
Q5 Our learning communities and PLN are sources of energy and support for many of us. What might educators do to create a culture and network of support in their schools?
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
The importance of counselors needs to be emphasized and valued. There should be at least one counselor full time at all schools, and a substitute counselor. When our counselor was out ill two years ago, there was no sub and our school suffered. #leadupchat
A5.2: a PLN is most powerful when it engages digitally and face to face. This is the basis of the leadership model I am working on; https://t.co/MFoOw1YbQr. #LeadUpChat
Teacherprep programs can inform future teachers about social justic, trauma issues but it really comes down to the individual to immerse themselves in the understanding of these issues and then be a resource to help.
#leadupchat
A5 Intentionally know/understand/utilize the strengths of those you work with enabling everyone to do what they do best and complementary partner with each other to reach measurable goals. Then we can uniquely understand/appreciate the contributions of one another. #leadupchat
A5: Every day is an adventure!!! Build the capacity of your people through time investment, job embedded pd, coaching conversations, and an uncontainable joy that is contagious and authentic. Build culture in 30 second increments, right @Joe_Sanfelippo? #leadupchat
A5 be willing to help others take breaks - offer Ts mindfulness training ala @TishJennings work, set up partnerships so Ts have a trusted peer who can help them thru hot spots in the day #LeadUpChat
A5) Provide time for teachers to destress by having events such as “appy hour” where they share and explore apps or inviting yoga instructors, massage therapists from the community #Leadupchat
Q6 There are a few things that we can do to help relieve stress, including exercise and meditation. Please share self-care, mindfulness, stress-relief, relaxation, or meditation apps and book recommendations that will help us stay #FULLYCHARGED throughout the year.
#leadupchat
A5: We need to be present at our schools and engagingTs and Ss daily. I have monthly payday breaks with food and such to help provide a much needed break for T’s and create opportunities for talking and relationship building. #LeadUpChat
Culture of support: Respect, Appreciation, Gratitude. And then leaders, be in the classroom as a teacher and show your colleagues you still have your chops - be with the students - eat with them, walk with them, learn with them.
#LeadUpChat
A5: Overcome artificial boundaries such as lack of time by finding creative ways to virtually collaborate through social media or resource sharing. Not every collaboration needs to be face-to-face. We must take advantage when time is on our side. #leadupchat
Reach out to your local Educational Service District. Ours is https://t.co/0koQOcI6Qx. They do a great job connecting local districts and offering trainings, including trauma informed schools, etc. #LeadUpChat
A5: create culture by valuing mentorship more than a hierarchy; value innovation more than compliance; encourage by modeling, not threatening and expect professionalism by honoring a healthy work-life balance, not squeezing the life out of the craft of educating. #leadupchat

A5 Recently a colleague reached out to me as he has been reading #ClearTheAir’s August Troublemakers book discussion. He and I are planning to meet, chat + create a support system. Small steps going in a positive direction! #leadupchat
A6 Laughter is the best medicine. Take time to have fun together and make it an important part of the culture. Staff having fun together and enjoying our students. #leadupchat
A3: Know your people through strong relationships. Recognize when they are stressed or hurting. Be there for them. Help them find the air pockets to get back up to the top. Also, make sure too much is not coming at them at once and pull back where you can. #leadupchat
A6 My routine includes spending time reading books before bed each night - takes me someplace else! I also enjoy assembling jigsaw puzzles which I do find relaxing! #LeadUpChat

A5: I hope to share the great #LeadUpChat and #LeadLAP with our leaders like @OHPS_Super. Twitter has been a great source of inspiration for me and helps me "Get Connected" with leaders everywhere.
A5 sharing yesterday, at our school conference, with veterans and newbies, our final slide was, “Get Connected”. It was amazing how many were not using Twitter as a PLN. A inservice session that should be happening! #LeadUpChat
A6: I “de-program” on my commute home so I can be more “Dad” and “Husband” - will be trying the Calm app and will read Onward by Elena Aguilar (as recommended by @cultofpedagogy ) #leadupchat
A6 Check in with other and ask about how we are experiencing life and if we are thriving. The main elements of wellbeing include: Purpose, Physical, Social (healthy/loving relationships), community, and financial. Ask "how is life?" of each other. #leadupchat
A6. If I were a building leader again or if I ever become a district leader I will focus on employee wellness. I’d take lessons from the best corporations about how they do the same. I’d partner with local health and nutrition business to promote wellness for all. #leadupchat
I’m planning this too! I think I my carry a small bag around with me w/ notecards so I can do it on the spot and leave it on teachers desks! #leadupchat
A6: The Word of God along with the other things you mentioned. I also go to therapy and I use Pacifica for Stress & Anxiety https://t.co/CQ5iIpfiYq. Also, if you need medication, don’t be ashamed. Do what you need to do to live happily & heathy. #leadupchat
A5 (1): As w/ ALL of our work in #Education, whether we are Ts/Admin, our impact depends upon the Positive & Trusting #Relationships we share w/ our Ss, families, colleagues, teams. PLNs "are sources of energy & support" when we feel we can be ourselves.
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
Q5 Our learning communities and PLN are sources of energy and support for many of us. What might educators do to create a culture and network of support in their schools?
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A5 (2): When we feel we can be genuine&authentic w/in our PLNs, THAT's when THE MAGIC of PLNs can begin! W/out POSITIVE/OPEN/HONEST discussions, we are perpetuating work. #Educators need to cultivate positive #Relationships to start networks of support.
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
A5 (3): We can nurture positive #Relationships by initiating connections w/ colleagues; being transparent; being POSITIVE, OPEN, AND HONEST w/ our teams, our Ts, our colleagues. When we are passionate, genuine, & authentic, people know it AND feel it!!!
#leadupchat#FULLYCHARGED
Try gratitude - end every day with a note of appreciation to your great teacher, admin, custodian - focus on gratitude, not resentment.
#LeadUpChathttps://t.co/xj9qvgrkr6
A5: Also keep your perspective. Realize that artificial boundaries are not going away. Complaining without finding a productive action can be exhausting. Face the problem, deal with it, and remove it from your professional life as soon as possible. #leadupchat
A3 Weekly check-ins, provide opportunities to observe + talk to other Ts, create short active PD sessions throughout school year based on Tchr interest, provide opportunities for Ts to share tips. #leadupchat
A5. To combat stress I focus on healthy eating, excercising, and making sure I am getting enough sleep and enough family time to be balanced. It matters. #leadupchat
A6: All books by @ByronKatie. #thework transforms how you react to stressful thoughts. You can use it for personal stress, but it also can be powerful in how we approach students, too. More here: https://t.co/OxP7HmfBmh#leadupchat
A6 Ss often come by my office on their way out late in the day to chat. Always find those convos enlightening and definitely less stressful! #LeadUpChat
It’s hard 2 protect our folks from outside forces of stress - our Ts/principals work so hard, take their work w them to the grocery store, a night out w family, second jobs, work at home & at their own kids activities -last profession that’s on call -we have no ed ER #LeadUpChat
Purposeful hard leads to self fulfillment while purposeless hard leads to burnout. Question is - Who feels is it purposeful and who feels it is purposeless? This is why allowing choice of which the path that leads to common goal is a win win situation. #LeadUpChat
A1: Teaching is hard It is not the “hard” that leads to burnout, it’s the hard without worthwhile that puts us in a place of b-out. How do we achieve worthwhile? Support and purpose. Support lets us know we are not alone. Purpose lets us know we are going somewhere. #leadupchat
#leadupchat And help support Ts who are fighting through teacher-burn out everyday. Staying connected with positive people can completely make every day a survivable day until the light goes back on in your school. #iwishiknew
I loved my mentor the district provided when I was a new teacher @OakHarborPS. She helped me for many years afterward and this year she is moving on to help new teachers and more at another district. https://t.co/JDsjdsVclN#leadupchat
A6: Remember that in most cases, failure isn't final. Model resilience, build calming time and celebrations in to staff development, take a walk, don't become the thing you wanted to avoid. #leadupchat
A6: My favorite way to manage stress is to take a gratitude walk. This year, I will be working in a school that has recess. There is something about the power of the sun on your face that immediately recharges your batteries. #leadupchat
A6. One of the best things I've done came from @AnthonyTjan book Good People. I created a journal to keep thank you notes, feedback, emails that express gratitude & I read them for inspiration when things get murky. Grounds me & brings me back to purpose every time. #leadupchat
For more self-care battery-charging strategies for staff, students, and parents, please check out #FULLYCHARGED by @adamsteaching@MCUSDSupe and yours truly!
TY for an amazing #leadupchat this morning! Wow!
A6: I have been using the Five Minute Journal daily and have found it to be a great tool for mindfulness. Would highly recommend it! #leadupchat#FullyCharged#ChaseImpact
A6) Going out for a run or a long walk along the beach without music or technology helps clear my mind. Also, reading a scripture every night allows for tranquility and reflection. #Leadupchat#FullyCharged
My latest blog pairs well with our discussion this morning. I’d be grateful if you’d give it a read and let me know your thoughts. #leadupchat#FullyCharged
A4: It has to be a balance between the teacher prep programs & the school districts. As part of our school cultures, we need to see the things directly impacting our students & families & respond. I don’t think we will ever have enough training in this area. #leadupchat
A6: Remember that in most cases, failure isn't final. Model resilience, build calming time and celebrations in to staff development, take a walk, don't become the thing you wanted to avoid. #leadupchat
