The way this will work is that I will put up a statement and you will choose to respond by either saying "fact" or "fiction" and then provide a statement or two supporting why you chose to say "fact" or "fiction" #resiliencechat
A1 Fiction. If I could channel my mother, she'd tweet through me and explain this much better than I could. That always annoyed the hell out of her. #resiliencechat
A1: everyone assumes that teacher salaries are fair given the amount of time off. What they don’t realize is that teachers put in a full 12 months of work in a concentrated time frame. Under compensated #resiliencechat
A1: Fiction - Teachers and other school staff should earn significantly more than they currently do - in that they generate a disproportionate amount of downstream economic and social improvements for the amount they are currently paid #resiliencechat
A1: Definitely FICTION!!! First of all, what profession is comparable to teaching? Every other profession needs us! We don’t get paid nearly enough for all we do! #resiliencechat
However: Tidbit: Mr. MIT, a software engineer since the '80s, has not received a raise since 2008. And my impression is that techies are often not paid what they are worth. #resiliencechat
Will Dunn. HS math. Kansas. Joining late after a fast-paced and exhilarating time leading #ksedchat the hour immediately prior to this chat. #resiliencechat
A2: Being in the Bay Area of California, most teachers can't afford to live in the district that they teach in and many have to commute a long distance. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat With on-line education, students may not be close to the school or teacher. #community#resilience may mean wanting to be co-located with students or trainees, also mobility can create for cultural exchange #Diversityisourstrength
A1) Fiction. I’ve had two other careers (what can I say, I follow my heart?). I’ve been successful in them all. I’ve also worked twice as hard each time I shift, and make half as much! #resiliencechat
A2: There has been discussion of new housing being built specifically for teachers so that they CAN afford to live in the district that they teach in. #resiliencechat
A3: FIction: this is the frustrating thing, true for few applied to all. No secret in our business the same as others the people who put in the most time thrive #resiliencechat
A3) Fiction. Plan time is work. Contractual obligation to be there 30 minutes to bookend each day. Most days I’m there 5:45-4:15.
Should I also count the hours of job number two? The one I work so I can afford to teach?#resiliencechat
A3: Fiction. While Educators may be "on the clock" 6-7 hours a day, there is much more that they do outside of the classroom (lesson planning, learning curriculum, etc.) #resiliencechat
A4 - more and more and more, there are academies, data retreats, workshops, curriculum writing and unpaid days to set up your classroom. That's nothing to say of the constant reflecting and planning many do to improve for the next year. #resiliencechat#preachingtothechoir
A4 My mom took the summer off, but she also was going for her Master's degree. Also at one point she was working on a grant for a bilingual program. Seems to me that while not in the classroom, that was still working. #resiliencechat
A5: I think people do what's right for them. Some want to climb the ladder, some want to stay in the trenches. Hopefully we all want to make a difference. #resiliencechat
A5 Stuff and nonsense. Fiction. I never got the impression that either of my parents wanted to be administration. They wanted to teach. #resiliencechat
A2 personally, I do live in my district. However, I know a few educators who do not. I'd think there is a higher probability of working and living in the same district if the district is larger geographically (and populated) #resiliencechat
A5 Because they wanted to teach, I wanted to teach. Speaking of administration, too bad I wasn't supported by mine. Why I had to leave teaching. #resiliencechat
A5 I stepped out of classroom this year. While I enjoy my new position as an instructional staff developer (often a stepping stone to admin), I definitely miss the classroom and am not ruling it out as an option for my future. #resiliencechat
A6: I had my administrative assistant retire this past year. Was the public face of the entire school, in a small school like mine perform multiple invaluable functions #resiliencechat
This one teacher observed me at one college and then instead of nurturing me he told me off and I was essentially fired at the end of the semester. #resiliencechat
A6: Fiction. I think that the school secretaries are some of the most important folks at a school. The atmosphere in the office often sets the tone and culture for the whole school! #resiliencechat
A6 I hesitate to answer that. I am inclined to say, Fact, but it probably varies from school to school and as with all people varies from individual to individual. #resiliencechat
A6 Good school secretaries are probably similar to Radar O'Reilly, ie, they become very competent and probably run their school in a way he ran the MASH unit. #resiliencechat
Brad (K-5 Music) from @USD409Atchison . Had some other responsibilities but will respond to the chat as is possible. Hope everyone is doing well. #resiliencechat
A7 Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.
A friend's husband always used to get under my mom's skin with that remark. I am sure he did that just to piss her off. #resiliencechat
A7 Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.
A friend's husband always used to get under my mom's skin with that remark. I am sure he did that just to piss her off. #resiliencechat
A1) Fiction. Why? I believe the answer is because I don't believe that we as a society truly place enough value on education to our civilization. #resiliencechat
A8 I will continue to think about my mom and how, when she was in rehab in her late '80s had former students come up to her. They remembered her fondly. #resiliencechat
As always, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone at #resiliencechat for taking the time to be part of this great PLC! I loved the fact that we had a number of newbies here tonight. Keep spreading the word about #resiliencechat on Mondays 7-8pmPST
