#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
Hi all! Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA. I came up with a creative new vocab review today with @Padlet--I love the images the students found for it! #games4edhttps://t.co/A6tlBR3uf4
Well hello again, #games4ed. I am Mike Neumire, instructional tech coach in Rochester NY. Today, I wrote a spooky CYOA on Twine for a breakout game. Pretty jazzed.
Nicole, VA, Spanish teacher/ESL online educator, I am not sure I did anything creative today... Maybe I created distractions for my 3 year old so I could do grad school HW #games4ed
I LOVE the blank sheet challenge. "It can be the most frightening thing in the world because you have to make the first mark on it. Or it can be the greatest opportunity in the world because you get to make the first mark." -Marty Sklar #games4ed
Hey all! Arcadia, 6-8 tech Ed teacher in Virginia Beach. I wasn't super creative TODAY, but I finished these choice boards for my 6th graders yesterday!! #games4ed
A1: Sometimes it means being open to student suggestions and ideas and letting go of our own expectations of what their results should be. We're starting PSAs...I envisioned them to be serious, but some are wanting to work with satire....so....why not say yes? #games4ed
A1: I am thinking about the self determination theory- provide students autonomy, challenge and relatedness. Anything that gets students revisiting and revising their ideas. #games4ed
A1- I follow teachers/educators that inspire me to try new things. If I’m jazzed about something, my students follow my lead/feed off that energy. #games4ed
Q2: All areas of study, from math to history to business, can provide opportunities for creativity. How can students be creative in YOUR content area?
#games4ed
Creativity is a mindset ... one that needs to be set free. Too often in education we try to classify “creativity” which often blocks kids from a creative outlet because they don’t fit into a defined box. #games4ed
I have a kid who will freely admit to having no “artistic” talent but pair him with VCarve and a @ShopBotTools and he can make some furniture. Finally has an outlet. #games4ed
A2: I'm an OT so it's easy, as all my activities are game-based. :) S's are constantly coming up with creative ideas to make the activities more fun...and sometimes even better learning opportunities! #games4ed
A2: I believe students need to have choice in the way they want to be creative with what they have learned. Some may choose to do a skit, some may want to write a poem. Whatever helps them solidify their learning is ok with me! #games4ed
A2: Ways to allow students to be creative in foreign language... have them create a song or dance with new verbs they learned, make a comic strip with the target Q&A, create videos "telenovelas." #games4ed
A2: I do think in ELA that there's so much potential for creativity. Right now in college comp we're working on persuasive, but we're also doing PSAs and infographics to use some visual creativity, too #games4ed
Q2: All areas of study, from math to history to business, can provide opportunities for creativity. How can students be creative in YOUR content area?
#games4ed
How can kids be creative ... starts by giving them the opportunity. You have to believe it to be important if it is not important to you than the kids miss out on something special and quite possibly the only throng the remember about your class. #games4ed
A2: I believe students need to have choice in the way they want to be creative with what they have learned. Some may choose to do a skit, some may want to write a poem. Whatever helps them solidify their learning is ok with me! #games4ed
A2: Set a goal, give minimum ideas to begin, use a generic marking tool & get out of the way. Open ended = paralysis by choice, a minor limitation provides a starting line. Oh, and trust them (Ss) trust them & let them struggle if it occurs. They will rise up to it 👍🏻 #games4ed
But many do not see it as a viable artistic outlet ... but then I’m the kid whose high school created a design wood shop so me and a few other shop kids could get our art credit for graduation #games4ed
A2: it’s easy to go to creative writing or any creation that represents storytelling, but I’m more interested in ELA’s role in problem solving. For example, creating an app to address a school culture issue could involve research, interviews, iteration, etc. #games4ed
A3) I love showing my students "works in progress" that I'm doing. They need to know creativity isn't just popping out a finishing product immediately. #games4ed
A1) I try to give as many open-ended assignments/projects as I can. When they ask a million clarifying questions I usually shrug and smile. What they come up with is way better than what I would have told them to do anyway! #games4ed
This is an important point--sometimes open choice can be too scary. A few boundaries sometimes produces more creative juices than none at all. Thanks for pointing this out, Scott! #games4ed

A3: I do this type of stuff...weird, wacky, out of the box stuff to show them it’s OK to try. Left to right (CYOA unit, flip card memory, simulated autopsy with organs/hand made corpse & swimming pool cells) #games4ed When I show risk it is reciprocated back 🙂
A3) I can't really say I am super good at this. I try so hard to foster their creativity, but I often lack faith in my own, so I don't feel I have much to show them. #games4ed
A3: I share with my students things that I am working on, either artistically, academically, etc... It helps build relationships when you show the kids you are learning too through creativity or in other ways. #games4ed
I make stuff ... I also have a painting of mine hanging in my room below a painting by a really good local artist ... i reference it often because of the quality difference ... it is ok to be proud of something that is not very good ... it gives them encouragement #games4ed
A3: I think there’s a lot of value in simply thinking out loud, so that students see how beautifully messy the process is. Also a great opportunity to model vulnerability in this age of artificial (social media) perfection. #games4ed
A bit like worst preso ever; we would create stories that had mistakes in them. Students loved playing mistake spotto. It's actually harder than you think to use language incorrectly but it can be very funny and that's a chunk of creativity
#creatvity value #games4ed#auslan a3
And that takes huge creativity to use ELA for problem solving. Higher stakes, more pressure, and more innovation needed to truly make a change. #games4ed
A4: We have Maker Challenges and Code challenges with @scratch and @microbit_edu adn @adafruit We also build physically and digitally for math also give Ss choice in how they present material they know #games4ed
So you totally need to do this more :) That choice board--so cool! And you're showing that to them! You are definitely creative at visual design! #games4ed
A4: For foreign language, I have had kids act out or draw pictures that illustrate verbs in the target language. I have had them draw their dream house, while incorporating the target language to discuss what is inside. #games4ed
A4: A narrative based digital game is a totally new world....S's become incredibly creative talking, drawing, and writing about it because they are able to visualize it so clearly. #games4ed
A4: I’m a big fan of students creating games to teach each other content. It’s good fun to break down our favorite games and bring their elements to the classroom. #games4ed
A4: Nearly every single piece of work I assign has an open ended approach so it can be interpreted. Every assessment is build genetically to not limit. I try to win the Google fight. I love getting cool pieces of work. #games4ed
I love the idea of your painting next to a better one. You weren't "going for the A" or trying to be perfect or amazing. Such a good lesson for kids! #games4ed
A4) One of my favorites is early in the quarter I have them write a back story for their @classcraftgame hero. They come up with some amazing stuff!! #games4ed
A4: We built team towers a couple weeks ago with 50 blocks and paper, markers, etc....they could aim for tallest, sturdiest, most creative and best name. Every one was SO different! #games4ed
