A1. We can we help our Ss capitalize on multiple inputs (info) by making sure each student has equitable opportunities. We can also be sure that we are drawing from an array of resources that meet the needs of our Ss. Model and Scaffold locating and using information. #COLchat

  • MsSydneyMcGrath Feb 4 @ 9:08 PM EST

  • courtanderson7 Feb 4 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1: I think it is important we teach our students to use the inputs through a critical lens. Go farther than just finding the information and using exactly what is found. #COLChat

A1: We can help Ss capitalize on the multiple inputs by giving them the opportunities and encouragement to explore these inputs extensively and give them the opportunity to choose what works best for them! #COLchat
  • misslaystreet Feb 4 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: #COLchat Using a multitude of resources that draw on the interests, strengths, etc of all our students is really important!
  • beckyhoper Feb 4 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I think it's important to have a focus when presenting a lesson. Too many media inputs water down content. Choose one at a time and walk slowly. #COLchat

A1) Find THEM. By this I mean find your students on youtube, social media, encourage them to use it to show and share learning! I subscribe to so many students on youtube to tap their interests. Homework, post a youtube review to share in class. #COLchat
  • kellywchris Feb 4 @ 9:10 PM EST
Like most things we do, learning to use the tools is part of the process. Helping Ss to explore ways to demonstrate their learning while also guiding them make good decisions about using their energy & resources. #COLchat

A2. Help students to understand which inputs (sources of info) are best used in various situations so that they are able to maximize their time and resources. Help students to determine which inputs (sources of info) are credible, non time wasting, and engaging. #COLchat

  • toorzunaira Feb 4 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: Helping them realize they need to critically think about the resources they come across, and their validity. Also with the various types of input that students have access to these days, knowing when to use which is super important #COLchat
  • MsSydneyMcGrath Feb 4 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2: I think it is important to understand that all students learn in different ways and with that try different inputs to suit individual needs! Many inputs can be used to reach the final goal! #COLchat
  • HOWareyousmart Feb 4 @ 9:11 PM EST

A2: Making sure to have a purpose for each input. If we are just throwing something in to make it more interesting to students we may not be giving them the tools to succeed #COLchat
  • miss_lsauser Feb 4 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: I think that all inputs have the potential to help us grow, as well as the potential to distract. It's all about how these inputs are utilized. An input is not good or bad, but it should be viewed as a source of potential! #COLchat

A2: The best way to differentiate is to reflect....does this support my needs or take away from them. Reflection allows deeper level thinking as well as critically evaluating the input at hand, along with self awareness...being honest with one’s self and taking ownership #COLChat

#COLchat A2 - the same way we teach...formative assessment, reflect on what we are using, be humble enough to ask for help, accept help!, study what you are using and look for results. Results are: depth of learning, creativity creativity outlets and JOY!

Q2: How do we differentiate between inputs that help us grow and succeed and those that distract us from reaching our potential? #COLchat

A3. One strategy or approach to managing information (inputs) this year is using SMORE newsletters with staff and parents. SMORE allows the use of text, video links, web links, etc. This has allowed me to have one place that a great deal of info can be kept. #COLchat
  • tyarnold18 Feb 4 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: we need to be real and evaluate how we are using it. If you are using youtube to watch highlights when you should be watching a video on math. Need to teach kids how to effectively evaluate what they do. #COLchat

#COLchat A3 - this is my struggle, the oraganization piece! Managing sometimes take more energy than planning and presenting! Get me teachin’ and I am in my element, harnessing the inputs and I am like a highly distractible monkey! It’s a bit like harnessing the wind.
  • FbellomoB Feb 4 @ 9:20 PM EST
YES! Showing the exactly what each input is for and how to use it. #COLchat
    In reply to @courtanderson7
  • kellywchris Feb 4 @ 9:20 PM EST
This has been the case with many “inventions” , there is usually a positive and negative and it takes us a while to figure things out as people. For some, I’d suggest we still haven’t really figured it out! #COLchat

  • heARTISTatWORK Feb 4 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: As an art educator, Too many inputs lead to distraction and distraction is a huge road block to accessing our creativity. So too much of a good thing in this case most assuredly is not helpful #COLchat

  • kellywchris Feb 4 @ 9:22 PM EST
That’s goes for most people I know, me included. It’s developing discipline and habits to best use our energy and focus when they are at their maximum. We only have so much willpower & Ss need to know that. #COLchat

  • HOWareyousmart Feb 4 @ 9:24 PM EST
A4 - Garbage in garbage out is probably true. But, taking brain breaks can’t be considered garbage in my book. Rather I see them as a destresser and refocusing if the mind. #COLchat

Q5: How do you respond to new information that doesn’t fit with your current beliefs? #COLchat
  • blocht574 Feb 4 @ 9:25 PM EST
A4 Depends on the type of garbage! If negative junky garbage YES if useful garbage that just isn't needed for everything... But can help then NO #colchat

This is a great point Kelly! #COLchat People first. #COLchat

So true! @TimElmore talks about the fact that students have unlimited access to information, but still need adults to help them to know what to do with it (now, more than ever). #COLchat
    • miss_lsauser Feb 4 @ 9:23 PM EST
This is such a great point! Our students can't do it all on their own! #COLchat

A5. Positive change cannot occur without conflict. When we challenge our thinking by hearing other viewpoints and confronting conflict, we are open to the possibility of positive change. We may change or someone else may change. Either way, we hope it’s + change. #COLchat
  • kellywchris Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
In many cases it is true - food we put in our body, people who we allow to influence us, content we consume for our mind but there are instances when ‘garbage’ - what others throw away - can become something wonderful/beautiful when a different person uses them. #COLchat
    In reply to @FbellomoB
  • miss_lsauser Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4: I don't think that this is always true, especially in education where students have the power to interpret and take in information in so many different ways. Sometimes these interpretations can lead to some really great outcomes! #COLchat
  • misslaystreet Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
A5: This is a great opportunity for REFLECTION! I am always questioning my own thoughts, beliefs, values, etc. Asking myself why I am uncomfortable with something is a great way that I can still learn from it! #Colchat
  • tyarnold18 Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
    A4: 1 man's garbage is another man's treasure. #COLchat
  • MsSydneyMcGrath Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
A5: I try to be as open as possible to new information that may not fit my current beliefs. As a future educator I think it is important to become a life long learner and always curious about the world around you! #COLchat
  • courtanderson7 Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
A5: I think there is value in learning and understanding all voices. Even if you don't fully believe in it, there is almost always something you will learn from it. #COLChat
  • miss_lsauser Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
I agree! There is no one single way in which input can be interpreted and there really is unlimited potential! #COLchat
    In reply to @MsSydneyMcGrath
  • toorzunaira Feb 4 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4: Not necessarily, because sometimes we need that "garbage" to help us differentiate between good and bad content. Bad content can help us improve our analytical skills because it makes us realize we cannot just blindly accept everything we input #COLchat
  • tyarnold18 Feb 4 @ 9:27 PM EST
A5: ask questions and do some personal research. #COLchat
  • blocht574 Feb 4 @ 9:27 PM EST

That really depends on the source of the input and where it fits within my worldview. There are some people who push me to reconsider things, to re-evaluate my position and there are some I just ignore - ‘fake news’. #COLchat

  • HOWareyousmart Feb 4 @ 9:28 PM EST
A5-authentically speaking, I can be resistant at first. I need more support than the average bear because I want to do things with excellence. I also want to see proven results. That said, I can get on board with almost anything my kids get excited about! #COLchat

Q6: How do you determine the validity of resources obtained through digital media or online? #COLchat
  • kellywchris Feb 4 @ 9:30 PM EST
Exactly. There are many things that I know nothing about or that I am unaware of because of life journey - it’s not closing these out because they make me uncomfortable, uneasy, upset, nervous but to take time. For other things, NO! #COLchat

A6. Often times it seems as if we view things as credible when they align with our viewpoints and agendas. This can work against us. Deciding whether or not a source is credible should depend on much more than our personal views. #COLchat

A6: This can be one slippery slope! One thing that I like to do is look for a multitude of resources about the same topic and look into who is producing them. #COLchat
  • beckyhoper Feb 4 @ 9:32 PM EST
A6: It depends on whether or not it is in my area of expertise. If it's not, I will research and source it before using it. #COLchat
  • heARTISTatWORK Feb 4 @ 9:32 PM EST
A6: Same way I was taught to research the “old fashioned way”...look at sources, cross reference points, multiple sources as well. We are all human and may err at times but it’s being as vigilant and studious as possible #COLchat

Q6: How do you determine the validity of resources obtained through digital media or online? #COLchat
  • MsSydneyMcGrath Feb 4 @ 9:33 PM EST
A6: I think it is important to look past that resource, look for reviews, examples of others work with that program. If it is an article look at the writer's credentials. This article seems like a good place to start:https://t.co/zLrUVEiwcS #COLchat
  • misslaystreet Feb 4 @ 9:33 PM EST
Recognizing how our own biases can play into how we view validity online is really important! Thanks for bringing this up! #COLchat

  • WaltKozlowski Feb 4 @ 9:33 PM EST
A6: I research or simply ask. I've also been known to use things that may appear to be legit resources as a way to spark dialogue - particularly teacher resources from sources like Pintrest and Twitter. There is some great free stuff, but we have to be careful. #COLchat

Q6: How do you determine the validity of resources obtained through digital media or online? #COLchat
  • miss_lsauser Feb 4 @ 9:33 PM EST
A6: This can be tricky sometimes. We often jump to the conclusion that something online is valid because it "looks" valid. Further digging in required. Who produced the resource? Where/how did you come across it? What do others say about it? All important questions! #COLchat
  • FbellomoB Feb 4 @ 9:33 PM EST
Perhaps if the source is bias, unreliable or non-credible. It might give us false information, a biased viewpoint…..Therefore the Ss would have an incorrect perception of somethingMaybe that’s a stretch….. Perhaps if they used a source with negative connotations..#COLchat

The #COLchat #reflection question on Friday night (2.8.19) at 9PM EST will be about how digital media impacted your productivity this week.
  • toorzunaira Feb 4 @ 9:34 PM EST
A6: Cross-referencing, researching, and (although it can be scary sometimes) I try to look through the comments/reviews. Always dig further. And realize that it's okay to make mistakes as long as we own them and reflect on them! #COLchat
  • HOWareyousmart Feb 4 @ 9:34 PM EST
