#COLchat Intro:
Good evening and welcome to another great evening of #COLchat.
Tonight’s focus is Inputs & Outputs. Tonight we are referring to Inputs as any and all sources of information-books, digital, peers, speakers, etc. Outputs are what we produce.
Remember that we will be using the Q1. A1. Q2. A2. question and answer format. Don’t forget to use the #COLchat in all of your answers and replies tonight.
A1. We can we help our Ss capitalize on multiple inputs (info) by making sure each student has equitable opportunities. We can also be sure that we are drawing from an array of resources that meet the needs of our Ss. Model and Scaffold locating and using information. #COLchat
A1: I feel it’s best to help guide them on what they can gain by using each input. All the tools are great but you can’t write a paper with a hammer...so explaining the benefits and drawbacks of each is very important #COLChat
A1: I think it is important to give our Ss multiple resources to learn the information in different ways so they gain an overall knowledge base of the content from different sources #COLchat
A1: I feel it’s best to help guide them on what they can gain by using each input. All the tools are great but you can’t write a paper with a hammer...so explaining the benefits and drawbacks of each is very important #COLChat
A1: I think it is important we teach our students to use the inputs through a critical lens. Go farther than just finding the information and using exactly what is found. #COLChat
A1: We can help Ss capitalize on the multiple inputs by giving them the opportunities and encouragement to explore these inputs extensively and give them the opportunity to choose what works best for them! #COLchat
A1: I think it's important to have a focus when presenting a lesson. Too many media inputs water down content. Choose one at a time and walk slowly. #COLchat
A1) Find THEM. By this I mean find your students on youtube, social media, encourage them to use it to show and share learning! I subscribe to so many students on youtube to tap their interests. Homework, post a youtube review to share in class. #COLchat
Like most things we do, learning to use the tools is part of the process. Helping Ss to explore ways to demonstrate their learning while also guiding them make good decisions about using their energy & resources. #COLchat
A2. Help students to understand which inputs (sources of info) are best used in various situations so that they are able to maximize their time and resources. Help students to determine which inputs (sources of info) are credible, non time wasting, and engaging. #COLchat
A1: Helping them realize they need to critically think about the resources they come across, and their validity. Also with the various types of input that students have access to these days, knowing when to use which is super important #COLchat
A2: I think it is important to understand that all students learn in different ways and with that try different inputs to suit individual needs! Many inputs can be used to reach the final goal! #COLchat
A2: Making sure to have a purpose for each input. If we are just throwing something in to make it more interesting to students we may not be giving them the tools to succeed #COLchat
A2: I think that all inputs have the potential to help us grow, as well as the potential to distract. It's all about how these inputs are utilized. An input is not good or bad, but it should be viewed as a source of potential! #COLchat
A2: Each input serves different purposes. Going through the sources and showing the different purpose of each/what is credible would be beneficial to students using them. #COLchat
A2: There is quite a bit of research coming out about the negative impact of electronics on developing brains. We need to be very careful that our "cutting edge" approach isn't having unintended consequences. #COLchat
A2: I think that all inputs have the potential to help us grow, as well as the potential to distract. It's all about how these inputs are utilized. An input is not good or bad, but it should be viewed as a source of potential! #COLchat
A2: The best way to differentiate is to reflect....does this support my needs or take away from them. Reflection allows deeper level thinking as well as critically evaluating the input at hand, along with self awareness...being honest with one’s self and taking ownership #COLChat
A2. I like to focus on using energy and resources wisely & to manage these appropriately. Developing habits of mind, energy, body and spirit that allow us to do our best. #COLchat
#COLchat A2 - the same way we teach...formative assessment, reflect on what we are using, be humble enough to ask for help, accept help!, study what you are using and look for results. Results are: depth of learning, creativity creativity outlets and JOY!
A2: There is quite a bit of research coming out about the negative impact of electronics on developing brains. We need to be very careful that our "cutting edge" approach isn't having unintended consequences. #COLchat
I agree! Electronics have the potential to open up new opportunities, but they also bring with them a number of negative consequences if not used appropriately! #COLchat
A3. One strategy or approach to managing information (inputs) this year is using SMORE newsletters with staff and parents. SMORE allows the use of text, video links, web links, etc. This has allowed me to have one place that a great deal of info can be kept. #COLchat
A2: we need to be real and evaluate how we are using it. If you are using youtube to watch highlights when you should be watching a video on math. Need to teach kids how to effectively evaluate what they do.
#COLchat
A2: I think that all inputs have the potential to help us grow, as well as the potential to distract. It's all about how these inputs are utilized. An input is not good or bad, but it should be viewed as a source of potential! #COLchat
Digital media can waste tons of time. It is however time worth wasting if you enjoyed wasting the time and got a good laugh or learned something. :) IN all seriousness though, you are exactly right on time waster! #COLchat
Like many things, people tend to make things for use/consumption and then distribute before taking time to ask “How will this affect people? What should we consider? Who will benefit?” #COLchat
Perfect! Many times students feel all of the sources they see must be valid! #COLchat Heck, adults seem to do this. the diff. types of media can be tricky.
A3: I find it important to be intentional about when to allow inputs and when to turn them off and FOCUS - especially, when the task involves creativity.
This is why I print a paper copy of my daily agenda and to do list - less chance of getting sidetracked.
#COLchat
A3. Managing inputs is important to using energy and resources to their maximum. I like the work of @toddhenry and how he approaches the use of energy and resources for creativity and being a creative professional. #COLchat
Like many things, people tend to make things for use/consumption and then distribute before taking time to ask “How will this affect people? What should we consider? Who will benefit?” #COLchat
#COLchat A3 - this is my struggle, the oraganization piece! Managing sometimes take more energy than planning and presenting! Get me teachin’ and I am in my element, harnessing the inputs and I am like a highly distractible monkey! It’s a bit like harnessing the wind.
This has been the case with many “inventions” , there is usually a positive and negative and it takes us a while to figure things out as people. For some, I’d suggest we still haven’t really figured it out! #COLchat
In reply to
@miss_lsauser, @beckyhoper, @FbellomoB
A3: Although I have limited experience with managing inputs, I feel that important components are time management and responsible use of these inputs to ensure that you are getting the most out of them! #COLchat
A3: As an art educator, Too many inputs lead to distraction and distraction is a huge road block to accessing our creativity. So too much of a good thing in this case most assuredly is not helpful #COLchat
A3: It's a wonderful time to be a music teacher. Thanks to technology I can share a Mozart Opera with 3rd graders in a vibrant way I never could before. (And they love it).#COLchat
A3: Have to focus on inputs that move you forward! #colchat Outputs need to be meaningful and help others grow. If not helpful don't consume or send along!
That’s goes for most people I know, me included. It’s developing discipline and habits to best use our energy and focus when they are at their maximum. We only have so much willpower & Ss need to know that. #COLchat
I think this is a very important point! I think one must come at information from all perspectives to allow students to gain a full and broad knowledge base of the topic! #COLchat
This is a really good point! When I worked with kids in a summer camp setting (especially on art projects) I found that if there were too many distractions they lost sight of what the goal was! #COLchat
A2: We teach our students to critically think, but we have to, as well. We should take a moment after digesting content to reflect on whether or not it was useful to us #COLchat
A4: Again, this where the critical lens comes into play. If we believe all the information being put forward without reflecting on what we are learning, it can absolutely be true. #COLChat
A4: It depends.
There is also the saying, "one person's trash is another person's treasure". It's possible to create something new out of inputs that may not have seemed valuable. #COLchat
A4: In our profession, “Garbage in, garbage out” makes no sense to me. Not even sure how that would apply to learning and our sense of purpose. #COLchat
A4 - Garbage in garbage out is probably true. But, taking brain breaks can’t be considered garbage in my book. Rather I see them as a destresser and refocusing if the mind. #COLchat
A3: I was recently introduced to @feedly through my #edtc300 class and it has helped immensely with managing input! It makes it easy to curate content that is meaningful and have it all in one place #COLchat
A4: I don’t believe so...I feel one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. What may be seen as garbage can be used as an example, guide further discussion, produce creative alternatives and more. #COLChat
A4 Depends on the type of garbage! If negative junky garbage YES if useful garbage that just isn't needed for everything... But can help then NO #colchat
So true!
@TimElmore talks about the fact that students have unlimited access to information, but still need adults to help them to know what to do with it (now, more than ever). #COLchat
A5. Positive change cannot occur without conflict. When we challenge our thinking by hearing other viewpoints and confronting conflict, we are open to the possibility of positive change. We may change or someone else may change. Either way, we hope it’s + change. #COLchat
In many cases it is true - food we put in our body, people who we allow to influence us, content we consume for our mind but there are instances when ‘garbage’ - what others throw away - can become something wonderful/beautiful when a different person uses them. #COLchat
A4: I don't think that this is always true, especially in education where students have the power to interpret and take in information in so many different ways. Sometimes these interpretations can lead to some really great outcomes! #COLchat
A5: This is a great opportunity for REFLECTION! I am always questioning my own thoughts, beliefs, values, etc. Asking myself why I am uncomfortable with something is a great way that I can still learn from it! #Colchat
A5: I try to be as open as possible to new information that may not fit my current beliefs. As a future educator I think it is important to become a life long learner and always curious about the world around you! #COLchat
A5: I think there is value in learning and understanding all voices. Even if you don't fully believe in it, there is almost always something you will learn from it. #COLChat
A4: Not necessarily, because sometimes we need that "garbage" to help us differentiate between good and bad content. Bad content can help us improve our analytical skills because it makes us realize we cannot just blindly accept everything we input #COLchat
A5: I process it, let it stew, know that it is out there and ask others for their opinions on it #colchat I could be wrong need to know what is out there
That really depends on the source of the input and where it fits within my worldview. There are some people who push me to reconsider things, to re-evaluate my position and there are some I just ignore - ‘fake news’. #COLchat
A5: It is so important to keep an open mind and be willing to learn yourself as an educator. The world is always changing so we need to be willing to adapt and grow with it! Basically, don't knock it til you try it out! #COLchat
A5-authentically speaking, I can be resistant at first. I need more support than the average bear because I want to do things with excellence. I also want to see proven results. That said, I can get on board with almost anything my kids get excited about! #COLchat
A5: I ask myself questions...Why doesn’t it fit? Could it fit? What’s blocking me from embracing it? Could I use a piece of it versus all of it? I always try to see what barriers I may be putting up and hoping to challenge my belief system and think in new ways #COLchat
A5: I try to do more research. As someone who wants to be a #lifelonglearner, I want to constantly educate myself on beliefs/values that are different from mine, to try to see the other perspective. Sometimes I realize that I need to reevaluate my viewpoint, as well! #COLchat
A5: I ask myself questions...Why doesn’t it fit? Could it fit? What’s blocking me from embracing it? Could I use a piece of it versus all of it? I always try to see what barriers I may be putting up and hoping to challenge my belief system and think in new ways #COLchat
A5: I immediately seek additional information and ask questions. There's something thrilling about unpacking challenging ideas. If I could get paid to be a professional learner, I'd be the happiest person alive.
#COLchat
Exactly. There are many things that I know nothing about or that I am unaware of because of life journey - it’s not closing these out because they make me uncomfortable, uneasy, upset, nervous but to take time. For other things, NO! #COLchat
A6. Often times it seems as if we view things as credible when they align with our viewpoints and agendas. This can work against us. Deciding whether or not a source is credible should depend on much more than our personal views. #COLchat
A6: This can be one slippery slope! One thing that I like to do is look for a multitude of resources about the same topic and look into who is producing them. #COLchat
A6: Same way I was taught to research the “old fashioned way”...look at sources, cross reference points, multiple sources as well. We are all human and may err at times but it’s being as vigilant and studious as possible #COLchat
A6: I think it is important to look past that resource, look for reviews, examples of others work with that program. If it is an article look at the writer's credentials. This article seems like a good place to start:https://t.co/zLrUVEiwcS#COLchat
A6. Often times it seems as if we view things as credible when they align with our viewpoints and agendas. This can work against us. Deciding whether or not a source is credible should depend on much more than our personal views. #COLchat
A6: I research or simply ask.
I've also been known to use things that may appear to be legit resources as a way to spark dialogue - particularly teacher resources from sources like Pintrest and Twitter.
There is some great free stuff, but we have to be careful.
#COLchat
A6: This can be tricky sometimes. We often jump to the conclusion that something online is valid because it "looks" valid. Further digging in required. Who produced the resource? Where/how did you come across it? What do others say about it? All important questions! #COLchat
Perhaps if the source is bias, unreliable or non-credible. It might give us false information, a biased viewpoint…..Therefore the Ss would have an incorrect perception of somethingMaybe that’s a stretch….. Perhaps if they used a source with negative connotations..#COLchat
A6. I look for the source of distribution, who authored/created it, how it is distributed, the links to the original source. One needs to be aware of how algorithms work & how search engines distribute searches #COLchat
A6: Cross-referencing, researching, and (although it can be scary sometimes) I try to look through the comments/reviews. Always dig further. And realize that it's okay to make mistakes as long as we own them and reflect on them! #COLchat
This also allows for cross-referencing to check for validity too! The more sources that share the same information, the stronger it can be considered to be! #COLchat
Thank you for joining us in #COLchat tonight. It’s been great learning about inputs and outputs with all of you. Enjoy the rest of the week and lead in any way that you can. We will see you for another #COLchat in two weeks on Monday, February 18th at 9pm EST.
I took this question as, garbage meaning, if we are looking at and believing non credible sources, biased sources, stereotypes…etc. Then perhaps we have a false knowledge base about someone, something….etc. #COLchat

A6 As a researcher, it is so important to make sure sources are reliable and valid - so look for peer reviewed articles or open ed resources that have reputable affiliations. #COLchat
Excellent. Yes! Some of the inputs may not be good or reliable sources therefore creating biases, inaccuracies….causing us to have some bad information we might relay…..#COLchat
Thank you for the great discussions tonight #COLchat! It was great to connect with some new faces and to see some familiar ones too! @misslaystreet@MsSydneyMcGrath

Hmm... Yes I took it a bit differently ... Where someone calls an activity or research garbage but there can be shreds of truth in all things #colchat It is important to make sure what we listen to is credible

No I like the way you interpreted it. See, we all interoperate the words a bit differently. That’s why face to face or via voice is SO much better when comunicating. #COLchat
