#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Hey, hey, #personalizedPD! Thank you so much for being here. I'm Mandy, #educoach in TX and I'm thrilled to moderate tonight's convo! Please introduce yourself and tell us why you're here.
I'm Jason Bretzmann from WI. I'm a teacher, Innovation Integrator, & co-author of the #personalizedPD book. Along with @kennybosch I'm your chat host. Welcome to the chat ya'll. Take it away moderator @mandymtaylor
I’m John, Tech Coach from Fort Worth. I didn’t know we were talking about Google Hangouts until 30 seconds ago, but now I’m really excited #personalizedPD
A1: Professionally I am still learning how to be an effective administrator. Need more convos with current admin...what works, what doesn't #personalizedPD
A1:A while back, I said that I wanted to share about either the importance of parent involvement or being trauma-informed with my peers. I've been asked to write a proposal for an upcoming nat'l conference!! EEEKKK! I need to know how to make the proposal perfect. #personalizedPD
I've been toying with the idea of introducing the chart at our school. Feel like it needs some ramping up or other "start small" terminology #personalizedPD
A2: It starts with the awareness that we need to grow, perpetually. Then we need spaces like this during which we can explore our growth on our terms and with like minded folks. #personalizedpd
A2. Personalized learning is a log like Jack London's inspiration. We must "light out after it with a club." We cannot wait for a school or district to offer us #personalizedPD Go out and get it! Resources are everywhere. #personalizedpd
If you haven't already checked out the #personalizedPD book, please do. So many useful ideas to get started & keep going with a better way for adult learning. Let's go! https://t.co/1Xp9FBBTky
A2. you have to have a growth mindset.. and you have to surround yourself with people who have a growth mindset.. You are creating a natural #PersonalizedPD environment
A2: Advocating for #personalizedPD is a two way street. We've got to do it AND we've got to push for more of it. On our time. On district time. The learning is real. #personalizedPD
A2 ask for what you need, be transparent about where you are and where you want to be. Surround yourself with people who challenge your thinking & push you to new levels of success. #personalizedPD
A3 Use the feedback you get. Listen for what Ts are asking for and then provide it for them. Highlight those who are owning their learning & share their stories. #PersonalizedPD
A3: It's been equal parts refreshing and stressful over here. We've committed to putting PD in the teachers' hands. Some buy in, some roll eyes. I have to remember my last name is Professionaldevelopment, so I can't take apathy personally. #personalizedpd
A3. for leaders, the best PD you can provide is allowing your Ts to have input on what they need and what is going to have value in their classroom - If you are deciding for them, you are eroding an important element of your school culture #PersonalizedPD
I bet some of the current eye rollers are just not there yet. They need a different kind of coaching to get them back on the best path. Everybody's different. #personalizedPD
If the administrator is ready to take big steps then there are a ton of options, but for those that are reluctant small steps are better than no steps #PersonalizedPD
Maybe that should be one of the district initiatives: Each educator & each learner will find something they are passionate about and pursue it, learn it, and share it. #personalizedPD#growthmindset
In my Professionally Driven model, there are no titles of admins/teachers. ALL are Educators. Everyone is on a Learning Journey. -> https://t.co/M2umJEr8UG#personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
I see you....staying low in the background.... ready to pounce on this chat and share your ideas. We would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
Maybe that should be one of the district initiatives: Each educator & each learner will find something they are passionate about and pursue it, learn it, and share it. #personalizedPD#growthmindset
For too long they've been beat up and beat down by bad PD. It's true that #personalizedPD & coaching folks toward it can be energizing & it can reinvigorate the learning process.
Right now it looks a lot like me telling their successes on twitter, celebrations at mtgs & newsletters, bragging on them to campus visitors. I try to encourage them to connect with each other- “Mrs. Swick has been working on that too! You should ask how it’s going.”
A5 I want more #personalizedPD time during the actual day, not after school. We have some PD days but they are usually planned out. I want time to explore what I am interested in. It would take time, substitutes, trust.
A5: In some ways, I'm realizing it! We have at least two PLCs at our secondary level whose work is truly inspiring. Self-guided, student-centered, thoughtful. Now, to get everyone on that page would change the game. #personalizedpd
A5: Someone to come in, with donations from businesses in town, and transform classrooms to flexible seating, painters to paint in soft Earth tones. <3 #personalizedPD
A5 One of my goals is to start a professional development seminar/event/summit that’s geared towards pre service teachers. Get them excited about lifelong PD & the value of connecting & conferencing! #personalizedPD
A3 I think the answer is easy regarding control. We teach this to our children at a young age. Treat others the way you want to be treated. I don't want to micromanage people and I don't want to be micromanaged.
Give educators professional CHOICE & support them. #personalizedPD
A5: Wildest PD Idea? A massive session of "Game of Stories" played by thousands of small groups of educators sharing stories, laughing, learning, & jumping up at the end to shout, "This is exactly what I needed!" Who is in? #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/KAd587v1s3
Saw this on Twitter the other day and made me stop and rethink flexible spaces: “Flexible seating does nothing without flexible instruction.” Does one affect the other and in which order? It had me thinking. #personalizedPD
A4 Kill half the slides. Set presenter on timer to give small bursts. More interaction with attendees. Time to plan for implementation. Maybe new presenter? More? #personalizedPD
A3: we started a Deaf ed learning bites newsletter with #personalizedpd activities to help model for As and Ts. So far the feedback has been good. #deafed
Q6: Conferences, edcamps, Twitter chats, and great presenters can put us on a PD high. How can we come out of the clouds and spread the enthusiasm? #personalizedPD
A5 One of my goals is to start a professional development seminar/event/summit that’s geared towards pre service teachers. Get them excited about lifelong PD & the value of connecting & conferencing! #personalizedPD
I've definitely seen it work better in certain situations. As with most education trends, thoughtful pedagogy outweighs Pinterest pretty...#PersonalizedPD
A6: I think there's no limit to praise, celebration, shout outs, and genuine thank yous to our teacher leaders. When each is a natural part of what we do, we don't come out of the clouds, the clouds come to us. #personalizedpd
A5: wildest professional development dream I have is for #deafed staff to realize every PD opportunity can be a learning opportunity, if they chose to make it so. #personalizedpd
A6 Come out of good PD and offer (read: not require) to discuss with other educators what you learned or thought at your location, share it on your blog, or in some other format.
Show people what you did w/that PD experience-did you create a new lesson or.....?#personalizedPD
Q7: Adding to your #PLN is the cherry on top of your professional learning! Don't forget to follow others from this chat. Who isn't here that we need to follow? #personalizedPD
Remember to get your deck of the #personalizedPD "GAME OF STORIES" Everybody loves the conversations that start up & that they just can't stop. The deep and expansive learning is just what you need. https://t.co/KAd587v1s3
I like the #GameofStories slow chat via @Flipgrid idea. I moderate the #personalizedPD chat in 2 weeks on Feb. 6. What if we start the game then during the chat & continue it throughout the week until the next chat?! #Woah

Yes, we can. I think dances follow that format: fast songs, mix in a slow song, back to the fast ones.
Twitter chats that are on @Flipgrid on #GameOfStories back to Twitter can do the same.
