#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, what you teach, and where! I'm Kristin, and will moderate tonight's chat. I teach ELA and SS in Lansing, MI. Welcome!
A1) I try to strike a balance between hands-on games (with dice, boards, and BreakoutEDU), and digital games such as Kahoot. I would like to integrate more game based learning--I choose these to help Ss review, or problem solve. #6thchat
Hi everyone! I'm Mary and I teach 5/6 Tech and 7/8 STEAM in Lansing, MI with @mrskochheiser I'll be popping in and out, but I'm excited for my first #6thchat
A1: I use both electronic games such at @GetKahoot , but also in-class games like @breakoutEDU and dice and boards. I use these to assess, introduce information, and review. #6thchat
A1: I used to play a lot more math games with my kids when I was in gen ed. Miss those! Apples to Apples was great for language building with ELL students #6thchat
A2) Game based learning is designed to use games to teach concepts, ideas, and skills where the outcome is improved understanding, retention, & recall; gamification turns non-game activities into games to achieve higher engagement and interest (points, levels, badges) #6thchat
I use both those from the site and create my own. I also started creating digital breakouts, which are easier to manage and pretty easy to set-up. #6thchat
A2: Game based learning is learning with/about games, Gamification is turning class into a game. I think there is a distinction in how you structure your class based on which you use
#6thchat
A2: From what I understand; game-based learning is using games with content, while gamification is connected to the classroom culture and behavior system and such. #6thchat
I use google-sites to house the whole breakout and use google tools and resources both in print and online to build the locks. For example, I used an article on Readworks for one of the locks. #6thchat
A3) Game-based learning benefits: Ss motivated, more problem solving, cooperation, individual responsibility, fun, and Ss learn by "doing" something. Can build in formal assessment and connect learning targets #6thchat
I have shown interest in both, I think from a simplicity standpoint GBL is easier since it can be a one and done whereas gamification would normally take longer
#6thchat
A2: #6thchat Game based learning is using games to learn concepts, gamification is turning your class into a game with assignments/ taste being worth points towards levels etc
A4) If there are "winners" and "losers" some Ss struggle w/being able to lose graciously; often these are more time-consuming so may need extended times for Ss to complete; Ss may focus on winning more than content. #6thchat

A4: some pitfalls are that you may not get as much feedback from the lesson and as with all computer time some Ss will push the limits and be doing other things #6thchat#IHMarchMadness
I have a Ss this year who will shut down when he isn't doing well on Kahoot, and you are right, I second guess when/how I will use it. Haven't had to do that before. #6thchat
A5: I recommend @mrmatera "Explore Like a Pirate" all about Gamification and I have also seen some others in person/on Twitter that do it too including @HeckAwesome#6thchat
Please feel free to add resources or ideas here and save this @padlet. I know that @SteinatDavis couldn't be here tonight and added several ideas, too. Thanks! #6thchat
A5 I use physical games CatchPhrase, Apples to Apples, Slap (see pic), magnetic darts, or sound effects buzzers, also like Tribond, Bezzerwizzer as time fillers #6thchat
A6) I think Ss do not have enough time for conversation, interaction, and an opportunity to play with hands-on games; They are used to digital games, so sometimes it's good for them to practice how to take turns, talk, act, react, strategize, create. #6thchat
This hour always flies by. I am still chasing down some tweets to check out! Once again, this tribe always gives me some great ideas/thinking material #6thchat
Thanks for all the well wishes and comments on #6thchat I would love you all to subscribe to my channel at https://t.co/SB0FREshu7 It is all about teaching and finding the joy in the journey. I think you would like it! Check it out!
A8) Gosh, I need to check out a whole bunch of games that folks mentioned tonight! I also need to "PLAN" to purposefully integrate more GBL into my class as we enter into Spring when attention can get more challenging. New ideas needed! #6thchat
A8: I think (like most weeks) this just makes me want to do more with game based learning and gamification. I think I'm going to try and steal @pjcerullo's idea and use Werewolf somehow
