Tonight's topic is based on some work that I am doing this summer at a school.
-
Tidbit: This past decade U.S.has seen big increase in school gardens led by CA which calls for a garden in every school.
-
Let's get started and we will get some joiners I am sure--with the DNC in the background...

Q1: What are the benefits of having a school garden?
-
I love that. I do so much of my counseling in our butterfly garden, which Ss call "our comfort spot."

-
I love that. We have a "Butterfly Garden" at our school too!!!
-
-
A1 There is a sense of wonder to be found in every garden.
-
Just happened to see your topic tonight. Here is a blog post about school gardens I wrote recently https://t.co/97yyQNxlnM
-
A1. Planted many gardens over the years but the challenge always was getting it watered in the summer when everyone is gone.
-
-
A1 Our garden's products make their way to our dining hall. Delicious.
-
-
-
A1 A place to see what their involvement can do to make a difference. Nurturing that garden Authentic immediate results
-
We teamed up with dining hall staff in planning our garden, and they work year round (camps etc.).
-
A1: Great topic! We have a school garden. Truly teaches our Ss to be stewards of the earth. A great responsibility!
-
that doesn't seem like your tweets are showing up.
-
That is wonderful!! We have a Farmer's Market every Friday from our harvest--a variation on the Bake Sale. ;)
-
A1 School gardens is a place where kids can do ... grow something ... to bad we often try to over-educate this experience
-
-
-
-
This was an issue in another school I worked in but we worked it out with parents signing up for weeks.
-
Michelle Obama We lean on each other. True in life and in a garden
-
Great topic! We are starting a school garden this year.
-
Absolutely!! Such an important lesson to learn
-
What produce do you plant? Is it a giving garden? How do you distribute your goods?
-
doesn't seem like your tweets are showing up. Are you in ?
-
Great idea! Thanks for sharing. https://t.co/H94H5GYO7t

-
A1 I just like to grow stuff and so do the kids ... it is a great experience ... watching stuff grow.
-
A1: Having a school garden creates opportunities for children to be creators, guardians & collaborators.
-
A1: Gives students context for their learning. A garden can help make learning relevant.
-
this is where opportunities for great community connections can come into play! https://t.co/qWSs7jYxsC

A1. Planted many gardens over the years but the challenge always was getting it watered in the summer when everyone is gone.
-
That is such a good point--overeducating instead of following the natural wonder and curiosity of the Ss.
-
-
BTW--Good to see you, Kelly!
-
WHoo-hoo!! I will give some resources at the end of
-
I'm keeping a tab open for tweets from and I'm copying her questions out for all.
-
Not in Twitterjail--just some tech mishap that has been going on for a long time and can't resolve. Hm....
-
-
All sorts of produce! We harvest and then sell like the old fashioned bake sales.;)
-
Nice! We used to have a nature center and we had satsuma orange trees that the Ss LOVED to eat from & enjoy
-
YES!!! Great point! You can tap neighbors around the sch. even if they don't have kids there
-
-
Maybe we can share some specifics with Q2
-
Q2: How have you seen gardening incorporated into schools/curriculum/activities?

Q2: How have you seen gardening incorporated into schools/curriculum/activities?
-
A student garden can make children believe they can do things they never believed they could do. https://t.co/BAKObJXBKg
-
A2 A little bit. Not as much as I'd like to see. I might have an opportunity to mentor HS aged SpEd kids in the fall.
-
A2 Butterfly garden at researched, designed, planted, cared for by students.
-
YES!!! We even have a beautiful metal unicorn statue in our garden as garden art. Talk about believe...
-
This would be a great project!!!
-
Would love to see pics of everyone's gardens!

Would love to see pics of everyone's gardens!
-
A2: In our nature center, there's a teaching theater and Science Lab for experiments. Art Ts take Ss outside, so do mentors.
-
Wish I had pictures of gardens at my current and former schools to share with y'all, .
-
A2: Each grade level contributes: Composting, recycling, life cycles, healthy choices...
-
-
One of the schools I wk with, The Meher Schools, incorporates the garden across the curriculum in really fun ways for Ss.
-
-
-
Love it!! Art and gardens--now there is a great pair!
-

Please join in!!! Glad you found us!

Q3: What are some of the connections between resilience and gardens??
-
That is fantastic!! Yes, there are grants out there just for this!! (Hi Dorothy!!!)
-
Thanks for sharing this pic!!
-
-
A3 Any quiet place you can go to recharge your soul always helps with resilience.
-
A3 Watching plants return after rough winters.
-
-
A3: Students learn what inputs needed for plants to thrive = discussion about what inputs make people thrive.
-
A2 Lots of math in cooking & procedural writing of recipes. Here are some "iron chef" activity pics https://t.co/JnCQfY4NfJ
-
A3: Great question! Gardens are all about creating the conditions for growth. Happy plants yield more fruit!
-
Beautiful! It's a great way to explain the concept of resilience
-
A3 Watching plants wilting in heat returning after a good rainstorm.
-
A3: Plants get stressed and bounce back with care. People do too.
-
A3: One of my Ss in grief counseling connects w/his mom thru every Cardinal we see in the garden. https://t.co/VI4A1crIqB
-
Love these!! I love the fact that so many of you are involved with gardens at school!!!
-
Hi all. I just found you. I saw in my feed.
-
Why I find it so healing. I have a sense of wonder every spring.
-
A2: Resources abound to help teachers make connections between gardens & the common core (i.e.) https://t.co/zaV19ztomL
-
We in CA are waiting to share this lesson--if only we had rain!!! ;)
-
-
-
-
-
He loves feeding the song birds!
-
Grow native plants. They will thrive in your conditions. Too much emphasis put on green lawns.
-
-
A3 We all need quiet in our head, heart & soul. Time to listen to inner voice & reflect. Good 4adults good 4students.
-
A3: Students can bond together, form new friendships, raise funds and work together to build a garden.
-
A3 Prairie plants surviving a drought are something to witness.
-
When my son was young we'd go on garden walks to unwind or when he was upset. Now at 22 he STILL does that in gardens!
-
A3 I have seen S's use it for self reg. Not in the learning zone, go work in the garden, return to class ready to learn
-
You will bring that gift to the students you work with this fall. How lucky for them!!
-
-
-
-
Ahhhh......Thks, Barbara. It's great b/c of all the great peeps who participate on
-
I hope I will get the chance. Principal resigned and so teacher is not sure new principal will allow.
-
Perhaps but I have an equal concern that we "under" educate the experience. Learning vs visiting. https://t.co/DrzW6gi3lI
-
-
A1 School gardens is a place where kids can do ... grow something ... to bad we often try to over-educate this experience
-
-
Yes, that's what we do around here--native plants. And no one has a green lawn anymore. It is frowned upon.
-
and another Bay Area gal. :)
-
That is so very true!! We are all in it together--big time!! I look forward to ops to connect!
-
-
Good. We still have folks around here trying for lawn perfection. Ridiculous.
-
-
YES!! And it is really fun when they go to the garden on their own.
-
A3 shows the value of partnerships. We partnered w/ the high school to start seeds in the greenhouse https://t.co/tuVEiNHFVv
-
-
He taught me more--and continues to--more than I could ever teach him!
-
Never too early to be a gardener!
-
-
You will have to keep us in the loop and let us know what happens!!
-

Q4: What reflections would you like to share about YOUR experience re:gardening with students?
-
A4: Some of my favorite memories with my students happened as we built a garden together. I hope they feel the same.
-
"Balance" is the operative word here and in life--would you agree? (Good to see you and the boys!)
-
-
You are in the Bay Area?? Where?
-
Having a brown lawn is actually a badge of honor around here!
-
Scott! This is gross and... awesome! My 5th graders would LOVE this!
-
You are fabulous to share these here!!
-
-
Q4: A garden helps develop strong wrk ethic, collaboration and serving others for the common good. https://t.co/LU6knVVwCD
-
Palo Alto. We had a home in Livermore a few years back and my husband worked in San Ramon.
-
Love the idea of the High School partnering with the elem school!
-
Plant sedum or hen and chicks or similar ground cover.
-
This is GREAT!!! Heheheh!!
-
That's true. The CA drought situation is a mess.
-
A4 Can't believe tweeting this: I loved the mess the digging in the soil helpings kids learn responsibility & joy on faces
-
-
-
Yes, the grosser the better!!! Yuck and Yeah!!
-
Beyond being a mess. It's really beyond critical.
-
..and I was in Danville but now in Walnut Creek.
-
-
Danville and Walnut Creek are both lovely.
-
A4 gardens are not just for teaching curriculum but can build community partnerships where everyone learns from everyone!
-
Agreed. RT : Beyond being a mess. It's really beyond critical.
-
Q5 A good question that we can help one another with...
-
Q5: What concerns or questions might you have about school gardens?
-
I love gardening for ALL students. It gets even the most fragile Ss involved and gives them a way to express themselves.

-
You are fabulous because you remind us along with curriculum we are teaching children with hearts & souls.
-
I actually feel that the way to our Ss heads is THROUGH their hearts and souls.
-
A5: Is everyone doing organic gardens???
-
The credo of Balance is too often just a disguise used to conceal the unpalatability of the truth. JIMO
-
Oh, absolutely. Relationships first! https://t.co/R4cVFo2QRP

A5: Funding a garden? Rely on grants, LOTS of generous donations from community and families, and reuse items in new ways.
-
A5 No pesticides or herbicides, but not organic in the strictest sense. I do buy from local garden centers.
-
from Sara

Q6: What will you do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
Although retired I still sub and can't wait to share all these resources w/my colleagues
-
-
A5: I have learned from experience, a garden must include multiple teachers & admin support in order to succeed & last.
-
GREAT!!! If there are more that people have feel free to put them up on
-
Awesome. I bet they will love them!
-
A6 - Nurturing relationships. That's the type of gardening I love to do.
-
YES!! It has to be a collaborative effort to really succeed and be sustained.
-
Didn't think I'd join but a tweet from about listening to DNC in background, I decide to do so. THX all

I great big THANK YOU to all for participating and "growing together" in our own special garden each Monday on
