The goal of #wvedchat is to provide educators an opportunity to connect, share, and learn from others by engaging in conversations around issues and topics in education.
Q0: Welcome to our #WDYD (What DoYou Do) scenario-based chat tonight! Introduce yourself and share a #Win for the last two weeks from your classroom or school. #WVEdChat
Q1: #wvedchat: No gum rule school-wide. D-hall is consequence. Student who has attendance issues is caught outside for recess chewing gum. What do you do?
#wvedchat A0 Derek, athletic director at Hedgesville High. Not many wins lately, this crappy weather is killing the spring sports season. Personal win: walked 3 miles today. On week 7-8 of consistent 3-day/week workouts with my buddy @H_Ville_Ftball
A1: Pull the student aside and remind them of the rule; offer them a chance to be in compliance. Them being at school and feeling cared for is far more important than enforcing the policy. #MyOpinion#WVEdChat
#wvedchat A1 This is a great example of mistakes that even veteran Ts make. Is this a safety issue? Not really. Goal is you want the kid to b n schl lrng. Response shld b 1 that moves closer to that goal.
A2: Proximity first; move closer to show them they need to start to change the behavior. If that does not work; tap their desk as you walk by, but be discreet about it. Get their attention to change the behavior, but DO NOT put them "on the stage" to correct. #WVEdChat
A2: Move closer to the students while they're chatting but I'm still teaching. Give non-verbal cues.
Stop for a moment and ask them to stop if necessary. #WVEdChat
Q3: #wvedchat Student lives with grandma, struggles to be engaged in the classroom, has put his head down the past 3 days in a row in your class. What do you do?
A3: Pull them aside; ask how they are doing or if they need anything. Discreetly call grandma and ask the same thing. Let them both know you're there if they need you. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A2: Again I like to always consider a goal. Maintain as much of a relationship w/that kid as possible and stop the talking. Too many Ts response says "my goal is to ensure my rules get followed." It's the wrong line in the sand.
A:3 Depends on my relationship with the student. 1. Might talk to another T that is closer. 2. Talk to student directly. 3. Call grandma to see if something changed. 4. refer to counselor if needed. #WVEdChat
Q4: #wvedchat You planned an outdoor activity today and as you are walking your students out, you notice one student quietly checking his/her cell phone. What do you do?
A4: Ask them if it's something to share with everyone? If they say no, prompt them to put it away. If they do share; things could get funny. #WVEdChat#FunnyTimes
A4: I'm elementary so we don't have this issue without another kid telling. I'd tell them to put it away, if they didn't then, I'd keep it until class was over and prompt them to put it in their locker. #wvedchat
#wvedchat A3: Launch an intentional 2x5 if u haven't already. 2 mins per day for 5 straight days. Talk abt anything non-schl related. Ull need a relationship & connection if u expect to dial in on what's wrong.
#wvedchat A4 I've always been in the land of cell phones. Never taught below 8th grade full time. My goal was always to allow Ss to consider how to become a functional adult w/a smartphone. N this case, it's prob a fine time to check ur phone. I may check mine walking out too.
A5: Oh boy. Try to keep calm.
Walk over, try to be discreet about staying quiet with a non-verbal or a quiet whisper. Reminder to stay turned around. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A5 These are great interview Qs. In fact, maybe the best. And, this happens all the time to all of us. So for the T, consider, how long have I been talking & Ss been sitting passively? Maybe it's time for a change.
Q6: #wvedchat Student who just failed an assessment comes back the next day, asks to retake a different version of the assessment, and passes with flying colors. What do you do?
That's a good model in my opinion. Kids need to see proper use of a smartphone. Most don't know what that is. So seeing us put reminders on our phones, inputting a calendar event, or saving a voice note... Those are things kids need to see from us. #wvedchat
A6: Tough ?, We've all wished we could take the test over again and have that extra day, but sometimes the real-world doesn't give you that extra chance. I think it would depend on grade level and % of grade. #WVEdChat
#wvedchat A6 This Q presents a valuable opp to send a + message home to kids. That message is "I value ur lrng far more than I value points & grades. I appreciate ur interest n lrng so ur grade will reflect just that." Motivation & autonomy w/skyrocket if u keep up this policy.
Q7 #wvedchat Student that has put his head down last 3 days suddenly comes into your class the next day and asks thoughtful questions, pays attention, and completes his work. What do you do?
#wvedchat A7 This is a monumental moment that you cannot afford to miss. Fact is, when we reflect on it, we probably miss tons of these opps w/tough kids each year. Bring ur finest praise, reinforce that behavior w/genuine heartfelt gratitude.
A7: I'd be very proud of the student for turning things around; however, depending on how well I knew the student, I might not wait the 3 days if I suspected something was wrong.
A8: Apparently I'm not engaging the student as an educator.
What can I change in the moment to get the student engaged. While their engaged, speak to them quietly. #WVEdChat
#sblchat & #colchat opened my eyes several yrs ago. I had never been exposed to any diff way till then. Changed my outlook on grades, compliance, motivation. Took me some tough looks in the mirror for a while :) #wvedchat
A10: This is a hard one. I've been on both ends of this one. I would probably go to my colleague and tell them about what happened (without student names) and offer to help them look into something different to see if we can change those students' minds. #WVEdChat
A9: THANKS & PRAISE that student. It shows character that they're taking pride in their school and are willing do something they weren't asked to do. #WVEdChat
