We were introduced to growth mindset last year but our first CPD on it will be in Sept.

Hello this evening. Not sure what I can contribute but very important and interesting topic.

How was it originally introduced? Any guidance from those introducing it?
Some of us have been doing our own reading, but there are a few who regard it as "just a fad" - so very mixed

intro was just a mention in INSET and suggestions to use more positive language with students. it wasn't substantial
Personally I'd say both at the same time.
Good strategy thoughh, as immediate top-down approach would put many off straight away

A2 By admitting own limitations and demonstrating resilience in the face of errors/mistakes and willingness to learn
A great question. Does it need to be embedded across the whole community: children, parents, staff?
Not necessarily. Learning alongside would be a great sign of admitting limitations and showing growth

True growth mindset takes a while to make it habitual. Need to be fully in place with staff before helping kids?
it has had an impact with so many in the last few yrs. but also a dislike of change & being told what to do
A2 I think that staff need to actively try new pedagogy

Q2 Absolutely, some will take longer but positivity and reinforcement will help
A2: leadership needs to create a culture where it's ok to try (and sometimes fail) new things. That creates + mindsets in staff
Not sure we need to have deep understanding of the theory, it's more about application.
I agree but I also think that something like this can seem very theoretical until you see it in practice.

a1 I went to training then delivered to staff to plan strategies for our school. Training was by Barry Hymer. Fab course

A2 Having an open an honest debate about what and why an idea is being introduced. Staff need to be able to discuss their concerns
yep, culture and ethos are the key
This is why I say we need to put it into practice quickly and more rather than make big deal of theory

it certainly does, which is why we use practitioner enquiry, professional dialogue and cooperation
a3 Read Dweck's original book and research. It wasn't originally aimed at schools but at life generally.

yes theory wrongly applied has horrendous results. That is worrying.

Dweck is also critiqued though and that needs to be considered, too.

applying theory incorrectly can be destructive. I've heard "that child hasn't got growth mindset so won't succeed".
agreed, I think that it needs to be made clear that growth mindset is not the cure all to raising achievment

I have a hard enough time getting Ss to attend maths/Eng. they don't care about mindset theories. That's for me to worry about
a7 more students thinking about their thinking and learning and more teachers thinking about their teaching.
A6 create a little 'you' time, deep breaths and try following for more ideas and encouragement
just saying that IF a school wants to embed GM, the teachers need to believe in it.
in GM teachers expectations are key (as in many initiatives) thus if they don't believe, it won't work
