#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Mike, 2nd in Chelsea. Hello all!
So As you read quote, what do you think it means to be a teacher-writer?
I'm a later comer! Kyle from Mattawan, ELA teacher and Writing Center Director.
For me, I think about how I view myself as a teacher as one who inspires other writers, not just telling them what to do.
Matt from Mattawan, shoutout to my HS English Teacher !!!!
Excited to & with the crew of teacher-writers! Happy to join from !
Q1: For me, being a teacher-writer means bringing my practice and process into the classroom for kids. Practice what I preach!
First official question coming up in 1 min...
DJ Freese ELA teacher in Monroe earning an MA in EdTech. Currently rocking a sobbing child.
I think it means that we have to be researching and writing along side of our young writers. Show the importance, not tell.
I love the part about claiming the vision of teaching as more than a mere transfer of information. This is my goal.
Q2: I teach writing and I was feeling pressure from the “those who can do…” so I thought I better try to be “one who can.”
Practicing what we preach (or teach)?
OK Here comes our first official question of the evening...
Q1: What are some ways that teachers can take on roles as teacher-writers? When, where, why, and how do you write?
hey, Mike! Loved the podcast you created with and shared. Great job!
makes me think of Yagelski's as praxis! understanding writing as an orientation & way of being
I think I've found the responsibilities of being a writer and educator intimidating - to be quite honest.
Love that it's more than just transferring knowledge 2 Ss!!!
A1: One of my fav's I learned from : Write when your students write. Great for showing process.
First time (student) teacher tweeter saying hi from UM
Hey Tara, 8th math Zeeland. Checking in. Need to get a few ladies to bed here. :) I'll try and check back soon!
A1: This is so important. To be authentic and to have empathy for our students we must try to maintain our reader/writer lives
A1: Model writing for enjoyment and reflection with your Ss. Possibly through blogging.
A1: I think it is important to write in the classroom and in authentic spaces. Blog with Ss, show them your struggles.
Hi! I'm Jen from MO and am lurking tonight. This is a topic VERY close to my heart. Hoping to jump in here and there!
What, in particular, do you feel intimidated about? Curious to hear more of your thinking here...
A1: I was inspired by many wonderful educators including the amazing to start a blog on my class. It gives me a voice.
Thanks Janet. I appreciate your kind words. I have learned so much from you as well.
A: I write on my blog, but it's not consistent, find it hard to make it a priority.
A1, start with a passion & expand your learning about that passion through writing
Love the idea of writing as an avenue to student empathy. That has great appeal to me. https://t.co/WVqABzYPKS
A1: This is so important. To be authentic and to have empathy for our students we must try to maintain our reader/writer lives
A1: It means feeling a student's pain while helping to cause it.
A1: I accomplish this is through NaNoWrimo- I write alongside my kids, share my struggles, successes, etc. I write whenever I can
Coming in late for - Kim from Grand Blanc!
I struggle with this too Ben. I am writing in other places, but I want to make my blog important and worthwhile.
A1: Engage Ss argumentative writing on current issues in their community. Ss choose topic. Engagement and purpose.
A1: I blog (often poorly) about my experiences teaching math . Mostly attempts to learn from each other
I struggle with the same thing! Haven't written one in a verrry long time (hangs head sadly)
As teacher writers, we can model the writing and reflection process for students. Engage in the process right alongside them.
A1 It's not a natural part of how curriculum has been delivered. I write only when forced into a corner.Process writing = hard work
Wondering how much writing is involved in your podcasts. Certainly a creative endeavor!
A1: showing Ss that writing about what you're passionate about matters. Blogs, articles, journals, etc.
A1: I write on my website to document/explain activities I do in my classroom. I blog a bit (need to do more) to share ideas.
Thanks to all teachers. We know that writing about our personal and professional lives is time consuming and difficult...
A1 I am a prolific notebook writer (for myself and for my teaching) and I blog like crazy, too. Ss have blogs also
Q1: I write with my students as much as possible. We do it together and I'm open about other writing I do. It's an outlet for me.
A1: I try to write with them during wkshp but I also share my blog entries with them to show them my process
as a teacher educator I feel like I learn most about my own of writing by stretching outside and composing unfamiliar genres
A1) I blog and try to do writing assignments w my students to practice. Love blogging but need to get moving on my blog
A1: I show my writing to my students. I also show them the revisions that I have had to do. Show them I am not crazy. Lol.
... yet, many of us who are teacher-writers find the possibilities that writing affords us to be empowering.
A1 I go in spurts writing on my blog. Honestly been a couple months - need to refocus! Great way to model for Ss
Yep! My blog is lonely right now, but I find a few moments to write in notebook. Hopeful!
A1: Write my own Mentor Texts, use them as avenues into revision and editing too.
Do yo have any suggestions to help those of us that struggle to? https://t.co/4LzYX6atFk
A: I write on my blog, but it's not consistent, find it hard to make it a priority.
that's very important to build critical thinking skills & form their own opinions
A1 recently started a blog. I try to write a little when Ss are writing to model and mentor, I want to write a book for Ts, tough.
I think of writing as more than the written word; it's also about photos, the crafts, & embodied actions in the class
What comes to mind is that our Ss need to see us Ts as writers. How I come up with ideas, rethink word choice & ask for ideas
A1: I try to write pieces that I can use as exemplars. In reading, I often share how I annotate or prep for a book discussion.
I jot down ideas. I have a lot! I'm thinking I'll be busy this summer. Need to do better about this.
Joining late tonight...Erin from Adrian-HS ELA
A1: I talk about writing I'm doing w/ kiddos, whether or not it's academic-I have them provide feedback on my writing to process
Writing, and in particular publishing anything that isn't "vanilla" and safe has risks involved.
Love this. Writing doesn't always have to be done. The process is the key.
A1 I think it's imperative that I have had the same struggles that I ask my students to have. Can talk about how I overcame them!
I agree The teachers have challenged me to write digitally in new genres
I agree. I am a perfectionist so it's a struggle. I need to let this go!
most definitely. Visuals make up a lot of elements of storytelling
best part of this is it gives them confidence to take risks when they see me struggle.
I find that sometimes, the shorter, the better. Give small details, add images, explain just enough.
yes! I think we need to allow the space for our students to collaborate on their writing as we do!
A1 Trying to write myself was a good reminder of what I'm asking Ss to do. Not always easy to come up w/ ideas & share w/ audience
Thanks! I will. :) Could talk writing all day long!!
That's awesome! One day...is my NaNoWriMo motto. November always such a hard month!
Q2: What spurred your interest in becoming a teacher-writer or in learning more about the role of teacher-writers?
Yes, I want them to see that the struggle is real.
A1: I try to write w/ my Ss, but as a part of class, not as another human. I'm w/ those who feel intimidated by it
Being a Teacher-Writer lets me engage with students honestly about my own struggles.
Couldn't/Didn't believe I could be a writer until I found and the Oakland Writing Project
I think you said a similar thing. :) So many Ts don't do this. I don't know how to NOT do it!
A1: I blog - professionally and personally. when in the class I blogged as a reading journal with my Ss
Hi Andrew! Good to see you. I think the sharing is the key. Writing to think it thru; writing to share it all.
I love the echoes here at ! Teacher-writers as collective communities of practice! Making process and practice transparent!
It's best to hit the Ss with duel purposed assignments. Not enogh time to do everything
A2: I wanted to help other teachers and I wanted to help my Ss by showing them I am a writer too, not a preacher of good writing.
I do this on twitter. Just not on my blog. ;)
Love love love this idea, https://t.co/WApmvQ2cwA
I find that sometimes, the shorter, the better. Give small details, add images, explain just enough.
A1: I tend to keep some form of diary, and I think introducing students to this process can really help them grow
When thinking about this topic, I want a better voice in my writing. It bores me to read my own stuff. Never good that.
A1: I write whenever there is a thought or Q that resonates in my head - -which happens a lot in this career :)
Write Beside Them made me think about my ss seeing me as a writer.
Show's how there's comes a time to let it go and see what happens when an audience sees it.
A2: Seeking tools for increasing Ss engagement in writing and in community impact. More Ss in community activism.
A2: I think I was always there without knowing. But having professors involved w/ NWP that encouraged my involvement helped a ton
I took last summer to study other blogs and try to rework mine. Short posts in a series is my new thing.
Alternative certification is becoming better teachers.
A2: I felt isolated as a writer, finding a group of teacher-writers helped push my own thinking about form, function, and aesthetic
A2: For me, I worked as a writing consultant at a writing center. Taught me the value of listening and trying my own ideas.
Because writing is fun and & showed me how to be both teacher and writer. https://t.co/DdClNkMZwk
Q2: What spurred your interest in becoming a teacher-writer or in learning more about the role of teacher-writers?
A2 to not teach in isolation. Writing allowed me to share my ideas & know I'm not alone, others educators feel the same way.
Q2: In what seems like a lifetime ago, I was inspired to teach others to write poetry. Volunteered at a B&G club. Started my ed path
A2: With all the negativity in education, I wanted to spread the message of all the GOOD stuff going on! I see this every day!
Amen, Sista!I've learned that quiet writing time is important but so is that noisy conversation time to collaborate
A2: Like , I think it's important for students to see us engaging in the work we ask them to do as well.
A2: Write Beside Them made me start thinking about showing my ss my writing life
A2) I first became "a writer" when my 8th grade ELA teacher told me I was. Writing comes natural. It is a way to tell my story
So agree! Love my writing group with , and !
Late
Stanford today. 👮🏻Brutality began there.
Shabana Jameel, M.Ed™

I'd still like to Experiment w/online PD
A2: When I first read The Art of Teaching Reading & The Art of Teaching Writing I was inspired to try new strategies & scaffolds
A2: I started a blog in order to have a voice in how outsiders and parents perceived my classroom.
A2: Writing is part of who I am, it's important to me, so I want to share it with my students.
I keep a journal and everyone has a writer's notebook. They are ubiquitous as textbooks and more useful.
A2: By blogging, I give other Tchs ways of changing a math class. By writing, I can tell our story, share journey, good & bads
A2: Honestly, my writing center kids inspire me to continue to struggle as teacher-writer. They want to see how I operate as author
YES! Totally agree. We have to get messy with our kids & 'scrape our knees' alongside of them!
Q2: Modeling for my Ss. Wanted to help them with process. And exercise creativity
A2 My admiration for teacher-writers is rooted in their ability to illustrate the beauty of writing to our students by doing
I mean, that notebook of lousy poems written while zoning out in college lectures had to lead somewhere.
A2: Writing is one of our only ways to provide a true legacy. I teach to impact as many as possible, so writing was a natural move
I get so much out of writing group. Not afraid to be vulnerable. Ss need to see this.
A2 reading other Ts blogs inspired me to give it a shot
A2: I knew I had to join the conversation as a writer and not just as a talker. I had to step up to the plate!
Yes, can't be afraid to show Ss your mistakes.
Same for me! It's so important in my classroom. Wanted Ss to have same authentic audience. It changes you.
A2: Writing for an audience is a risk I have to take with students so class becomes a collaborative exercise in better writing.
If anyone has a taste for the morbid or wants to know more about 🇺🇸Terrorism by👮🏻on🇺🇸Soil - pls read my tweets earlier to
A2: Well as a PE major hired to teach writing I kind of had to learn quick. But it helped me teach, I was learning along with Ss
This conversation about teacher-writers is reminding me of how scared I am to share my writing!
A2: pressure that I needed to force the issue of disciplinary literacy in science.
A2 Love as teacher-writer. She sets great example for her Ss, isn't afraid to write from heart about Ss & classroom
Yes, and there are many teachers who feel the same way.
I love hearing about math teachers and their students blogging! Writing is thinking no matter the subject!
A2: Lately, inspired by this chat, feel like I've need to be more a creator and less a consumer. Writing is a good choice for me
So many great reasons to write and share our writing with one another! Thanks Q3 is coming up soon...
this Thursday at 8pm
"Student Centered Leadership"
Join us . It's a great chat for Principals and lead educators
A2 I've never been a writer, or interested, but lately people seem to want to hear what I have to say, trying to write to share
There's a great post from a teacher writer on https://t.co/4B03MllbDZ this week. Anyone in this chat want to submit something?
Mine too! I am reader first and foremost and therefore awed by what writers can do. Want my Ss to see possibilities.
Q3: How can being a teacher-writer impact the teaching of writing in a classroom or school?
Exactly and it helps with their confidence as a writer.
A1:
ClassRM:Shared📝
I tried to integrate it into different subjects. Prefered Ss📝independently.
Life: i📝ALL THE TIME
So inspired by my fellow fellows. Spent an amazing day with learning how we -yes, WE- can make an impact.
A3: We can give Ss more authentic spaces to write and more authentic experiences. Not just writing for a test.
A3: For me, it is about sharing ideas related to purpose and audience. I can show my students how readers react to my writing.
Just shared this yesterday! It was an excellent reminder and affirmation!
A3: Makes the writing more authentic for Ts and Ss.
Happy to pop in on talking about teacher-writers! Brad from Plymouth. Working w/ via on technology integration
A3: my instruction is more authentic bc I can share my struggles
A3: as teacher writers we should write w/ our students, understand the rhetorics behind social networking & writing w/ mobile media
Walk the talk. I mean, did you listen to the coach who sat on the golf cart or the one who got in the mix? https://t.co/qYRGLQxvfV
Q3: How can being a teacher-writer impact the teaching of writing in a classroom or school?
Again, Q3: How can being a teacher-writer impact the teaching of writing in a classroom or school?
A3: It can move students from product driven writers to process driven writers! At least that's a hope, right?
A2: Teaching📝independently helped me focus on📝independently. I didn't realize I was good at it. It was fun🙃. It helped me help Ss📝
A3: In my the classroom for things to write about so I’m more reflective about how the teaching works-when it does.
A3) you gain respect from students. As a runner I have always gained respect from athletes. Same is true from your ss
A3, I would hope the answer would be yes.
Course revision plan for the fall - position myself as a teacher-writer with my preservice teachers. Oh the possibilities!
A3: We're working on writing across all disciplines in our school this year. Writing in math class? Check!
A3: Writing has to be seen as more than just a task to complete. Teacher writers provide a window into purposeful writing.
yes! Also when my students saw my writing, they were encouraged to start their own blogs.
Q3: I use my blog with Ss often. Not only to use for discussion re: rhetorical devices but also to show that the struggle is real.
A3: Students see us walking the walk, as well as talking the talk. We show them how to work through the process in real life.
A3 When teachers share their writing, it gives courage for other teachers to do the same...so much goodness in that:)
A3 modeling process for Ss, I learned lots about teaching writing by immersing myself. Build empathy for what you're asking of Ss
A3: Shows Ss that writing is something that people do ALL the time, not just for school or b/c they "have to"
A3: Ss learn by following the example of others. Way more powerful than lectures. Show them and you will reach them.
Plus, we teach what we know. If writing is in your wheelhouse, you teach it better. Also, it's fun.
A3 Beyond process, modeling intentional audience selection & how the containers/communities we publish on/to align
A3: teach Ss that writing can be a collaborative process when working in groups.
A2 I like to write even if no one is listening, but it feels amazing when you get feedback, just like how our Ss feel.
A3: Audience, audience, audience! Sharing my writing shows Ss about real readers. Then we get them blogging!
Harvard's Best Foot Forward: Substituting Teacher Video for In-Person Classroom Observation https://t.co/ILsrnXIUqj
YES! I do this with my argument writing in 8th grade. I make my Ss detectives.
A3: We can also respond to the struggles students face when we know what they are through experience.
A3: My daughter has had a great writing teacher in 1st and 3rd. Amazing to see the growth those years. Her passion rubs off on them
1. Is there such a thing as "personalized learning"? This concept lubricate encapsulated individualism & market fundamentalism
A3: Helps me to put myself in my students' shoes and remember some of the difficulty of writing.
Q3: Help your students see the authentic value of what they are doing when you are doing it authentically too
A3 Writing allowed me to open up to Ss in ways I wasn't able to do through speaking - really impacted relationships
2. All authentic learning is embedded (context dependent) & relational
A3, when Ss & other teachers see good models (including the good, bad, ugly & not afraid 2 fail) then others will follow
A3: Writing reminds Ts of the process. What it feels like to be "stuck", create. Examples for Ss.
A3 it helps us to move away from traditional forms of writing. 5 paragraph essay is not the one & only mode of writing.
Don't laugh friends but you know my skin is crawling hearing the containers being turned into verbs. Language and vocabulary matter
Yes, I believe we have to talk about our writing with our Ss too. Talk about the moves we make as writiers.
Yes! Was thinking today about a collaborative piece with my students: "What it's like to be a teacher/student at CHS..."
A3 More empathy & opptys to model writing/revising w/Ss
A3: show my math and sci Ss that writing is important for them (even though not usually their favorite subject)
I've had my ✋🏽broken twice now by👮🏻for📝. I don't think Ss go through that.😐 📕
showing them that we sometimes struggle as writers helps them connect to us. Show them how to persevere
So true, Kim! Writing gets real for all of us. Sharing brings us together.
Do your SS ever question who will be reading their blogs? If they don't know who the audience is, does it still work?
A2 I write to reflect. So being a teacher writer is a natural connection. I learn through writing.
A3 I got away from writing, was almost like I was disconnected, starting up again reconnects w/ the process the Ss is going through
Yes! I have to learn to be better about this. Forget to tell my Ss sometimes when I'm horribly stuck and what I do. : )
A3 Also, reminded me that not all writing needs to be shared. Sometimes we write for ourselves, don't always need an audience
The next question is coming up soon from
A1&2 writing about my practice also keeps me on top of my game. I can model learning for students bc I am learning.
A3: I💭it could help Ss👀the value of📝. For EX:📝about AttemptedMurder helps me cope. Ss need outlets for stuff that matters to THEM.
Q4: If you are a teacher-writer currently, what do you write about and how do you share?
A3: Ts should write often in front of Ss, so they can see how we wrestle with the text and how we revise as we go.
Q4: Or if you are interested in becoming a teacher-writer, what would you like to write and how do you envision sharing?
A3) in my computer class I set the timer for 7 min. I give a topic and ss type about it. Meditating and relaxing.
Personal or professional blogs? or both?
Hearing from on Q3- intentional vulnerability leads to empathy for student perspective & thus better pedagogy AND relationships
A3:I use my own writing to “find out what I think” (Class Motto) I hope they understand I’m serious about the value in “real life”.
A4: I write about infusing tech into the middle school English classroom. I have co-authored a book, contributed chapters, etc.
A4: blog for and also my personal weekly blog for parents and ss
A4: I want to get back to blog writing and just continue helping Ts and Ss. Be an example.
Q4: I want to get better at this. I started the year with a blogpost on collaborative, flexibly seating/classroom arrangements.
A4: Ive been pushing myself away from & writing towards - been writing video, recording audio, shooting film
Mostly tweets because I have lil fellas at home and not much time beyond 30-second increments. https://t.co/Uc2YWPYvCg
Q4: If you are a teacher-writer currently, what do you write about and how do you share?
A4 Depends on what I'm feeling passionate about at the moment. Right now and giving classroom back to Ss
We welcome all writing teachers do! We can learn from each other about stretching ourselves in genre!
A4 just started blogging about school stuff...the hardest part was getting my blog/website together, I had a bunch of ideas already
A4: Every Ts has a voice and they should be heard.
A4: I write for a website as a side job- articles about Japanese pop-culture-- not sure how to share it in the classroom
I think it's important to share ourselves as learners with our students. Helps them think about owning own learning
A4: I've thought about starting a blog but can't narrow down my thoughts for a topic. Too many interests.
👋🏽Mr Hicks
Appreciate the RTs.
Normally the👮🏻Brutality📝gets ignored by So am👌🏽apprehensive of the attn.
This is about🙌🏽Ss.
A4: I'd like to write more about reading/writing/literacy/instructional coaching, etc...
A4: I try to share about the fun, experiences, and learning I encounter in my job.
Good! I was going to say social media as well. It's writing! And a from are Ss are likely to participate in.
A4: I really want to get a podcast off the ground for middle school teachers.
A4 I wanted my blog to be just about me and my opinions, not about my classroom, if Ps read it, fine, but that's not the purpose
A4 Need to get back on blogging, keep finding excuses. Always feel good after posting, even if no one reads it!
A4: Tend to write about what’s going on in my room or school and I blog for Oakland Schools Literacy and my classes use Tumblr.
Hi Just in from fellowship convening. Jumping in! Kristin 6th grade ELA and SS
What do you want to write a book about Laura?
A4: I rant on my personal blog. I try to write professionally to stay in the conversation. I post my parenting fails on fb. :)
A4: just want to blog to spread the word about positive stuff going on in my class, school, and education. Need to just find time.
Mine is very random. Its more about experiences and Ah Ha learning moments.
Maybe you could help me with my podcast? Hee Hee
A4: I write about practices - mainly teaching English and integrating technology. Working on stretching myself w other genres.
A4 I used to write for EdReach Disruptors. Transferred all those to I want to get writing again.
When student's claim they have no "writing life" I tell them to look at their phones and then answer again.
A4) I write regularly in class, & try to complete same assignment sharing as I go; professionally I blog but need to be more regular
Let me know if you ever want to chat about it.
1 yr since last published. 36 drafts "started". Try not to stress about that until life lends itself to dedicated flow time again
A4: I wnt 2 write about dispositions, biases, and stereotypes-including my own-that negatively impact students @ high-needs schools
A4: Need to continue to write about things going on in my classroom, need to share how I start the yr. Hard to put that into words.
Yes, and I would say broad is OK. Too narrow can make it a challenge.
Use the hashtag and others like etc and we'll read it!
Q5: In what ways do you share your writing with students, either as an example of your process or as a mentor text?
Thanks Mike. I appreciate it. I will check it out for sure.
How about collaborating with other Ts or writing a guest post for another blog. We'll share some in a bit.
A4: Personal blog about living w/ attention, Simple Abundance. Professional-hs changed - library, tech integration & curriculum
I'm the same way. So many drafts/starts/ideas, very little final products. Frustrating.
Part of it is being self conscious about putting myself out there! I care too much what others think - working on that!
A4: I would like to start a blog just to connect with others more in addition to Twitter
It is ESSENTIAL (starting in lower el) that Ss start to see themselves as writers in ALL spaces incl digital https://t.co/kS3JAASPWD
When student's claim they have no "writing life" I tell them to look at their phones and then answer again.
A5 I always have my WNBs around, share almost daily. I write a piece during cycle w/ students too. Use doc camera to edit
One more time... Q5: In what ways do you share your writing with students, either as an example of your process or as a mentor text?
A5: I use my writing as Mentor Texts, but ask Ss for feedback of whatever topic we're studying Ex/ Help me add "Expensive words"
Take the plunge! https://t.co/DsAhbU1AjF
Part of it is being self conscious about putting myself out there! I care too much what others think - working on that!
A5: When my Ss are writing, I put my writing up on projector so they can see me work. Have also shown them Writing group comments.
A5 - don't have Ss. Share personal on FB and friends follow. Tweet out professional.
digital literacy is prime focus-they need to learn how to write in the world where most of them will regularly write.
A5: I use more mentor texts to hit particular skills that I want my students to master. I should show other types of writing
A4: I've been working on a few novels and a textbook, but I'd like to start focusing on writing center impact on teaching
A5 joining late from Montana...I write with my high school students during quick writes...I share the good, the bad, and the ugly!
A5: When in the classroom, I would write raps and then rap (poorly) for my students. It was a profound point of connection.
A5: I do a lot of thinking aloud and reenacting my process. Like a behind the scenes look at my process.
Wow the evening is going fast. Please reply to Q5 soon because will share Q6 soon!
Q6: Given we work a full-time job as teachers, how can a teacher-writer make the time to write?
A5: My Blog posts get posted to the tumblr blog I use with my students. I shamelessly beg for readers. So I guess process and mentor
A5: I need to show my Ss my writing more!
A5: I share as much as possible--my ideas, my drafts + suggestions from editors, my excitement when a post goes live, etc
This women runs an AMAZING writing center. More would love to hear about it Kyle! https://t.co/hO1g2NCehh
A4: I've been working on a few novels and a textbook, but I'd like to start focusing on writing center impact on teaching
Yep, w/balance. We talked about this in PLC at work. Need to nod to various modes, purposes, & audiences. https://t.co/gvK79nY78w
digital literacy is prime focus-they need to learn how to write in the world where most of them will regularly write.
And I found success in the ClassRM working w/! So I'm 📝my 4️⃣Language Acquisition Theory✅
Yes, iKnow🤓
It's how I am.🙂
A5: I share, I remix, I tweet, I spread! I allow the space for students to cite, remediate, and/or critique my
A5 Shared as mentor. Ss reflected weekly on what they were reading, it forced me to be a reader & writer. If they had to it so did I
A5) I use mentor texts and my own writing to help Ss launch into their own writing;help Ss see how I made connections to what I read
I find the more I write w/ them and share w/ them the more they write. I earn credibility too. Know their pain
A5: I just share them out to Ss I think would be interested and A6: Sometimes you just have to make time.
A6: You have to make time by putting it on calendar or designating a time at night to do it. I have a routine when writing book.
A5 I started writing as a mentor. In the passed in "dumbed it down", now I share my best writing, duh! Whwas I thinking
That REALLY helped me help Ss📝+ "see" it from their point of view. Wish I had done more of it.
me too! I'm not so stellar at sharing my writing, but great at modeling my process. How do we add the writing on?
I have a hard time showing the bad, but it's important to show the struggle is real, even for experienced writers.
A6: Sometimes you just have to schedule writing into your day! Set a day and time... something to look forward to during the week
A6: I have a list of ideas on my phone, I squeeze in time whenever I can, I have to make it a priority or it doesn't happen
A5: am using my MEA blog post for Ss re: rhetorical devs. (protocatalepsis? or just Rhetorical question? Straw man logical fallacy?)
Q6: 20-30 minutes before bed every night is a great habit for me
A6: This is a struggle. Especially with kiddos. I think if it is important enough you will find time. Even if it is not perfect.
A5: I do a lot of process work with student and my writing, & often it acts as a mentor text. Student can then ask about how I write
A5: Sharing w Ss is my weakness. Writing is so personal to me. Time to model vulnerability?
A6: It's a real challenge. Some writer-teachers I know wake up early, others use weekends. Try everything and see what works.
A6: Very difficult with a busy life...as my husband sits here lecturing about how I spend too much time on school. :)
A6: I always think of my writing time as professional development! Making the time for reflective practice and knowing as doing!
Not sure--just enjoy it so much and need it to process life that it just is part of what I do.
A6 Struggling w/ that one. Choice between writing & sleep. Sleep wins
https://t.co/qKDFhSUMc9
A6: I used to go to bed with my kiddos, get up after a few hours and then write for a few hours. miched
I know but I need to put it practice. Just connected w/ a writing peer to keep each other accntble to goals
A6: I have a family/work/life balance issue. Life is incredibly busy with three kids! I am trying to find more writing time.
https://t.co/eRAm76avCe
Q6: Given we work a full-time job as teachers, how can a teacher-writer make the time to write?
A6: But the upshot is that the time won't magically make itself available; you do have to make writing a priority and schedule it.
A6 I have it on my to do list....blog post! Constant reminder. Not always easy to find time.
A6: I admit. I write the most on weekends and in summers. Last summer I stockpiled blog posts to release in fall.
yes! There is writing EVERYWHERE! Glad you're helping Ss to see that.
Yes! Having accountability is important.
A6: We need a blog challenge for a chat like . Start with a topic for 15 min, go blog for 15 min & then share. ??
That's how I📝my book: I am trying to habituate myself to again w/out letting ...what happened get to me.
A6: currently ignoring children's bedtime, reading logs, and Harry Potter to write professionally on Twitter.
agreed about the kiddos (typed as my toddler climbs over me during the chat)
A3 teacher-writers is model learning & can share writing challenges. Being able to speak from current experience matters
flip it,take the skills from their digital writing and use in other rhetorical situations much voice captive in phones.
Well we are nearing the final question. Q7 coming soon.
A6 I try to keep it short, easy for me to finish, easy for others to find time to read.
Gotta head out . Thanks and . Great chat! Stay connected everyone. We are all leaders!
We are hoping so; can't keep putting our voices on the back burner. Time to write and share
A6: Ahh, that's the question... I struggle to find enough time. So I try to write when my kids write or wherever/whenever I can
A6: I need to remember tweets are an authentic from of writing too!
A6: Right after school is over, ideas from day fresh in your mind. Good time to reflect and write.
Here it is... short and sweet! Q7: What is the best advice or resource for teacher-writers?
A6 Early in the morn! Journal, coffee, silence...aaaah!
A6: Some do best writing every day; others are binge writers (I'm a binger). It's important to see what works for you personally.
In college an ELA education teacher had us write a weekly letter to someone. Neat form of writing.
That is great! You have a voice, use it. Make it heard and be proud.
A6: I also think we shouldn't dis-count what we are doing right now. A ton of writing & thinking all in complex syntax of 140 char!
Glad there is a focus on writing with in the ! Finally!
A6 I need to be okay w/ shorter posts, too. Sometimes I want to write too much!
A7: is a great way to get your kids and yourself writing and publishing!
A7: Real quick. Read books, books, and there are so many others.
Got to tuck the kids in. Goodnight
Didn't you mention that ? https://t.co/NN6KBERwzF
A6: I also think we shouldn't dis-count what we are doing right now. A ton of writing & thinking all in complex syntax of 140 char!
Q6: Make it priority and a habit, write where others can see you. I love public literacy!
Agreed! My class and I also tweet together--especially to authors to talk to them about what they do https://t.co/5Pp7o9Bq54
A6: I also think we shouldn't dis-count what we are doing right now. A ton of writing & thinking all in complex syntax of 140 char!
I've noticed people set time aside to write. Wonderful! What are some topics do you write about or is it whatever comes to mind?
A6: A short block of time each night is sufficient if it's consistent. After a while it adds up. It's how J. Heller wrote Catch22
With all due respect Mr. Hicks the RT are😳
If you'd like to show support,
a📝Statement would help as would formal support
A7: Forgot to mention . He is awesome like
totally agree! How do we move past this and still respect the personal aspect?
A6) Need to put it on calendar as a priority. That's how I stay on track with workouts. Need to do it w/writing.
Find a professional home at a site. https://t.co/ikWnAsgYXr
Here it is... short and sweet! Q7: What is the best advice or resource for teacher-writers?
A4 I write about technology use, authentic connections w/ curriculum, & writing for real audiences & purposes
A7: Don't give up-a million things get in the way, but even if you can get a few words down, it's better than nothing. Feed the soul
A7 other teacher writers, seek out some examples as mentor texts, what do you like/dislike, and craft your style.
A6: Scheduling writing seems forced to me. I seek the inspiration that compels me to write, often as voice to text while driving
A7: Find your local location and attend a summer invitational! Life changing!
Tell me more about what you need... what kind of writing statement?
A7: Best resource? The NWP . That is all. : )
A6: I've starting with tweeting and I'm working my way up to a blog.
A7: Stop calling yourself & your students "bloggers". They are WRITERS. They don't "blog". They WRITE. Please. Language matters
I'm TOTALLY guilty of that!
A7: I read this at least once a semester. For me, thinking about as a way of being is energizing! https://t.co/0tIy2XE6fi
Q7: start small, be public, get and audience. Write about something you dig.
It was We are all writing right now! And for the world to see!
Thanks for a great chat! One last reminder: Add your blog to our list here: https://t.co/LxoXsE0AW8 All teacher writers welcome!
Most of my blog posts are details about classroom activities. Show how to start, link materials, add pics.
No Ts (except 2) will even acknowledge 👮🏻Brutality happened. Like it's the Holocaust+ I have to wait yrs until ppl admit...
A6:Writing during lunch does more for my energy than a trip to the Ts lounge (and is usually more positive too)
A7: Start writing. Keep writing. It's the journey, not the destination. Find a group. Find a blog. Find your voice.
A7) Connect with other Ts who love to write; read blogs; write with Ss
A7 Love me anything !! He's a mentor to me and my student writers. Answers tweets, too, which is great!
Check out my latest blog post, kinda fits this topic, it's about making mistakes and being ok with it. https://t.co/FHMUlP8c08
Why do you blog? Is it simply just to get your ideas and share them with others? I'm new to blogging
A4 I share my writing in publications, like Research Writing Rewired, chapters in collections, articles, & collaborative blogs
A7: Just do it. It helps me work through problems of practice, forces me to commit to changes and connects me to other teachers.
A7 Write Write Write Write - I am trying to encourage myself:) - Read Read Read read
Just like I wouldn't call them "podcasters". They are Producers. Tech terms get in the way of widespread intentional integration.
A7: Carry a pocket notebook and record the thoughts that otherwise slip away.
A simple📝statement - regarding the acts of Brutality/AttemptedMurder (Terrorism🇺🇸) would help. 📰NewsMedia won't touch it.
Great advice! Some words are better than no words! https://t.co/pJ5e4jYXtS
Q7: start small, be public, get and audience. Write about something you dig.
Thank you and I loved this topic! Inspired and motivated!
