As I am sure many of you know: On Weds. March 14th Students, teachers, parents and administrators across the country are invited to take part in a National School Walkout in a call on Congress to pass tighter gun control laws. #resiliencechat
#Resiliencechat Tidbit: "Providing meaningful opportunities to participate and contribute" is one of the top 3 protective factors supporting an individual's resilience.
A1: I like the idea of a walk for change. I like the solidarity of a mass walkout. How will it be perceived or received by those in power?#resiliencechat
I do think that there are walk-outs that are being planned in other countries other than the US as well. Anyone in #edchat or #walkout or #studentswalkout know of these? #resiliencechat
A2: it is interesting that despite the being just across a border, with most of the same issues Canada šØš¦ has been very fortunate to have few multiple fatality incidents of school violence. Certainly supportive of the movement #resiliencechat
A2 Many California School Districts are trying to provide safe opportunities for students to #demonstrate for #neveragain movements on 3/14. There is a huge concern to keep all of them safe, while appreciating their voices, perceptions and desire for change. #resiliencechat
Tidbit: My maiden name is Miller. Back in the late '80sk, when my BFF and I went to DC to protest the BRR (Bush, Reagan, Roberts) court, the guy who developed my pictures called me Miller the Marcher. #resiliencechat
That said, I also think that there are valuable opportunities in the classroom for those who choose not to walk out. Voice can be exercised in lots of different ways #resiliencechat
A3: yup. Bullying from a person of influence to a learner. And reported it. Ha... a few times. Once in high school, University, and volunteer position as an adult. #protectorofthepeace#resiliencechat#choosekindness
A3 Two Women's Marches, March for Science, Tax March, protested in front of ICE offices, March for Truth, pro union, pro immigration marches. #resiliencechat
My hope is that theyāll have honest and open conversation and not use the moment for a ālessonā. It might be a time for the adult in the room to do more listening than talking. #resiliencechat
A1: My thoughts? I love that students are becoming politcally and issues active and are making their voices heard. Many will be voting soon so we need them to be engaged. #resiliencechat
I couldn't agree more! We need to give the students their voice on the issue of gun control whether it be in the classroom or out at a march! #resiliencechat
A2 - We have also been sharing the idea #whatsyour17 The idea is that you do 17 things as a remembrance of those lost in #ParklandSchoolShooting: say hi to 17 new people, give 17 hugs, perform 17 acts of care, etc.. #resiliencechat
A4: To be clear about why he/she is participating and to be willing to accept any consequences (heard a principal said he would be suspending students who participate). Absolutely ludicrous. Every student should have their voice heard if they want it to be. #resiliencechat
A4 I discussed this with my son, 16.5 yer old Junior. I provided support, opinion, discussion, and a huge dose of - self-reliance. I want him to trust himself, use his knowledge, follow his heart, and not be swayed one way or another. His opinion matters! #resiliencechat
A4: I would make sure that they know and understand the POSITIVE and negative consequences of participating. There are some administrators who are not allowing participation or rather handing out negative consequences. Parents need to be informed. #resiliencechat
A4: I would also like to add that students need to understand the WHY behind the movement - not just take time to get out of school. If you're heart isn't for the actual movement, don't participate. #resiliencechat
I am saddened to think that there are adults out there who would not support our students in safely using their voice to promote safety. #resiliencechat
I think I would say me too on this! My mom, knew what was right, and fough for her rights, as well as others. She knew that many of the Spanish only speaking people needed information, and worked to ensure they knew what was happening at the school! #resiliencechat
Q5: "Providing meaningful opportunities to participate and contribute" is one of the top 3 protective factors supporting an individual's resilience. Why do you think this is this so? #resiliencechat
My mom and dad were both strong union members. Prior to becoming a professor, my dad was an assistant general manager who hired blacks into positions that other places wouldn't. This was back in the 50s. My sense of social justice is really from him. #resiliencechat
Yes, and unfortunately, there are communities where the pressure to conform, and to believe the rhetoric from a number of our politicians, and to silence these young adults is still a high priority! Oh, when will we learn? #resiliencechat
Q5: "Providing meaningful opportunities to participate and contribute" is one of the top 3 protective factors supporting an individual's resilience. Why do you think this is this so? #resiliencechat
A5: Yes, because life throws things at us, requiring us to "ebb and flow" and this helps develop resilience - like a rubber band stretching. It starts young...and no time better than following the lead of Parkland Students. #resiliencechat
Q5:"Providing meaningful opportunities to participate and contribute" is one of the top 3 protective factors supporting an individual's resilience. Why do you think this is this so? #resiliencechat
A5 Marching like this helps me heal. I need to participate because I cannot be a hypocrite. Not in me to think/feel "I got mine and the hell with you." #resiliencechat
A5 Back in the '80s, my abortion was legal and it was done safely. I don't ever want to see us go back to the dark ages when women died. #resiliencechat
A6: I would *hope* they would be applauded, respected, and supported after which engaging discussions would happen in school. No matter the class. And someone should capture their words as they will be powerful. #resiliencechat
A6: tough to comment, civil disobedience has typically came with consequences, from Dr. King there is nothing unjust about protesting things which are unjust #resiliencechat
A6 #resiliencechat This is a tough call. If the behavior is civil, safe, and within the parameters of being a student, that is one thing, however, if mob mentality takes over, and behavior places others in danger, than we also must work to quell that unsafe behavior.
A6: A discussion on how this is making a difference, how this affirms their feelings and others' feelings and thoughts. Turn this into a learning experience and an empowering experience. #resiliencechat
Please join #resiliencechat next Monday evening as well! 3/19/18, 7:00 Pacific Standard Time! I believe I have the helm for that evening! Thanks @saratruebridge
