So many great ideas, starting tonight with #EdTechChat. "Using EdTech to Foster Global Competence & Citizenship" GMT (-5), Monday, Mar 19! @julielindsay#langchat Hopefully the importance of language study will be discussed as a way to promote global understanding.
I lived in Spain for a month as a high school student with a host family. One of the best experiences of my life and one I'll always treasure! #edtechchat#globaled18
Greetings #edtechchat! Marci here—Implementation Project Manager with @LexiaLearning. Passionate about #BlendedLearning and looking forward to tonight’s conversation!
Teaching at the university level - many international students. Lots from China - both in f2f and online courses. Kept me on my toes as intructor #edtechchat
A0 My most memorable was living abroad as a child. Four years provided me with a very different set of experiences that I draw from to this day. #edtechchat
#edtechchat Icebreaker: Perhaps meeting people from N. Africa and the Middle East in Japan to work and learn from survivors of the nuclear bombings. It was enlightening, sad, and completely engaging all at the same time.
My most memorable experience was on a recent trip to India to present at #ASBunplugged. Loved the conference and 2 days of touring with @realityinindia . Everyone should go to India if they get the chance! #globaled18#edtechchat
Definitely living in Panama for 4 years. Experienced a variety of cultures at a young age and this continues to inform my thinking. #edtechchat#globaled18
Icebreaker! What has been your most memorable global experience? Think about travel experiences, conferences, online collaborations, global projects or any other activity that has made you think about the world in a different light. #edtechchat#globaled18
Hi #edtechchat, I studied at Warwick University in England, in the local dorm, local grading scale. Good understanding of academic preparation in each country.
#edtechchat Q1 - A global citizen is aware of the world outside their front door (city, state, country) and is involved in some way with the overall global picture. They are switched on and want to understand other cultures. They listen more than they talk.
A2: Global citizens leverage social media aka the internet to learn from others, engage with new people, cultures, and communities, and discover how we can be better together. #edtechchat
A1 To me, global citizens need to be curious about the world. They don't need to be travelers. But they have to be interested and ENGAGED. #edtechchat#globaled18
#globaled18#edtechchat I have lots, but probably spending a evening traveling around in a tuk-tuk in Timor, Indonesia- lots of stories and unexpected adventures from that night!
All of us and our kids are global ... they just don't talk about it as being global ... one of my WoW gamers told me last week that his guild was #1 in the world. That is pretty global. #edtechchat
A1) Someone that learns from people all over the world. Willing to interact and assist when possible in all ways. Students need to see the world through the eyes of others #EdTechChat
N from 🇨🇦, checking in a bit late. Memorable global experience? Some of the travel I did via grad school (Sweden, France, US). But India (even though I swear I'm allergic) tops the list as it's where my dad is from. #edtechchat
A1 A global citizen is aware that there is more to the world than just one corner. They make connections & are able to suspend judgement, listening and learning from a new culture. #edtechchat#globaled18
A1) Global citizenship really means diversity in social interaction, there is no concrete answer because the globe is made up of so many different people. Are globally minded people in Canada the same as in china? #edtechchat
Global citizens want to learn not only about the world, but also with, in, and for the world. (I can't take credit for that...but I like the way it sounds.) #edtechchat
I think we define "Global Citizens" as being activists or environmentalists ... i am like being a participant in something beyond your back yard. #edtechchat
I would say that before the internet and for sure before social media being a global citizen was reserved for the 1%. When was the last time you engaged with a Chassidic Rabbi Educator? 🤔 #Edtechchat
Nice! My parents are there right now. I got pretty horrendously sick during one of my last visits, and so... it's not all fond memories. But still, it was so eye opening when I went at 13 to see poverty in that form after a very sheltered life. #edtechchat
A1: A global citizen recognizes that their perspective is not the only one, and is interested in how we relate to each other through the lens of our differing perspectives #edtechchat#globaled18
Greetings to the great chats going on tonight. Just want to let you know we are starting a new #APTeach chat on 4/4/18 for all those inside and outside the College Board's AP community. Please join us! #admin2b#LearnLAP#NYedchat#edtechchat
100% agree. The web has democratized what was once available to just the rich. Though we must agree the experience of the web is still different based on race and wealth. #edtechchat
This is huge. Social Media and video have the ability for so many communities to connect and learn from another in ways that were difficult and nearly impossible before. #edtechchat
I am a global citizen ... i converse almost daily with people form around the world ... create opportunities for my kids to explore the world. #edtechchat
#edtechchat A1 For is, it has been the opportunity to go beyond the school walls to learn geography and culture. Our Ss have visited Russia, Canada, France, Israel, Sweden and Denmark this year. The cultural talk is the best and we share about our communities and schools.
Hi, Jeremy in Connecticut.
A1) One person doesn’t have the “look” of a global citizen, but together a global citizenry looks like the world. And we must foster global perspectives because our kids are entering an increasingly global world. #edtechchat
Q1: A global citizen is one who is aware of the world around them and can get along with those with other pov's, ideas, philosophies, and find common ground despite differences. #globaled18#edtechchat
A1: hi all! I’m Alexia, a math teacher from NJ. A global citizen is someone who is able to collaborate with diverse populations and people using 21st century skills and resources accordingly. #edtechchat
#edtechchat#globaled18 A1 A global citizen sees the world holistically , deals with 21st Century skills in action beyond his local scenarios, accepts diversity and is ready to collaborate as an agent of change . Our scenarios are theirs in projection and Ss help us see it ,
A1 - Global citizen is aware that the entire world is connected. Environment, trade, commerce, politics, everything. It's important that kids are aware that local actions don't stay local and can have much wider consequences (good and bad). #edtechchat
A1: Connecting, collaborating, creating, and critically thinking/sharing with those around the world! Embrace the tribe because we aren’t confined to 4 walls any more! #edtechchat
Absolutely - schools who have links to schools in other countries have a leg up on trying to gain a global perspective on a regular basis. #globaled18#edtechchat
“Curious to learn from others”—a great definition of how to be a global citizen and should also be the trait of a good citizen, global or not. #edtechchat
the problem with Social Media is that it has opened up the world to everyone, but like a bunch of DumbAs*es we have chosen to gravitate to others of the same mindset instead of expanding our minds we have contracted #edtechchat
Its true. The tech access divide is shrinking but all people rich and poor need to be nurtured and supported in how to leverage the internet to succeed. #edtechchat
#edtechchat
A1 Being a global citizen and an educator means recognizing that we are preparing students for vocations we can't hope to understand because they have not been invented yet.
Hi I'm Robert in Hong Kong. My most memorable experience was teaching tolerance and English to a mixed group of Albanian and Serbian high school students in Kosovo. Important to start breaking down these barriers with teenagers. #EdTechChat#GlobalEd18
A2 a person should share what they learn. There is always going to be someone around the world who is trying to do something similar to what you are doing #edtechchat
A1 A global view includes a tolerance to others and an openness to their beliefs. It means living in harmony and not silo'd into our own way of thinking. To give ear to all. #edtechchat
I think sometimes the priority gets lost. We focus on local citizen, then digital citizen, and sometimes run out of time for the global, or tack it on. We all need to do a better job. We should start with video chats, then exchange programs. #globaled18#edtechchat
A2 love this Q, my favorite, through #pbl Ss are learning about other countries, cultures and connecting w/Ss from Spanish speaking countries thru @edmodo@Flipgrid and learning in much more authentic and meaningful ways #edtechchat
Excellent point! Being part of edtech communities such as the ADE and GCI ones have also introduced me to others. The DEN program is also excellent for this. #edtechchat#globaled18
We need to get more kids involved in the world ... putting them as the face of our country and not our elected officials who can't seem to make America look good. #edtechchat
At my school @OakKnollSHC, we currently have two exchange trips underway. We are visiting the students who visited us this past fall. It is an awesome opportunity, and we will continue the discussion when everyone gets home #edtechchat#globaled18
A2. I think the key to that standard is the local part. Kids need to practice global attitudes at the local level before they can be truly ready to influence change on a bigger stage. #edtechchat
#edtechchat Q2 - Excellent question! By allowing new ideas and a fluid dynamic in the classroom. Students should be able to build their own contexts and content but the teacher should coach them to be engaged in global community in as many ways possible throughout their projects
A2. Have students tackle problems that their city, state, province, country is dealing with from the perspective of those outside their city, state, province, country. #edtechchat
A2 Create opportunities using tech to be more globally minded- mystery skypes, using tech to learn about other cultures, creating a global presence when sharing their learning, reaching out to edus in other countries to share first hand concepts and events #edtechchat
A2: Participate in a global project, such as Global Read Aloud or one of the many others! Participate in mystery Skype sessions. Embrace connections with schools from across the globe! #EdTechChat
A2) i feel the only way to truly make students into global collaborators they need to take part in projects outside of school that they are interested and passionate about. Multiple bored students in a forum does not help. #edtechchat
A1 A global view includes a tolerance to others and an openness to their beliefs. It means living in harmony and not silo'd into our own way of thinking. To give ear to all. #edtechchat
A1: My students don't seem to know much about the world outside of their home country, China. Important to teach them about other countries, cultures, democracy, and how to use social media and how to use it responsibility. #EdTechChat#GlobalEd18
#edtechchat A2: virtual cultural exchanges (respecting the norms of the other culture)and collaborative projects sharing the geography or climate for example in sci or ss. Skype meetings Google Hangouts
Alexander Hamilton was 21, James Madison 25, Nathan Hale 21, and John Trumbull 20 in 1776. What did those crazy kids know about making laws and fighting for citizenship? #edtechchat
A2: I see @iste Standards focusing on what technology can do to help nurture students into proactive thinkers, authors, & designers of solutions they want to see in the world. Understanding that there is talent across the globe that can collaborate w/ them is huge! #edtechchat
A1: One who is aware and accepts that there exists a world that we don’t know about, that is vastly different than ours. That world exists right outside our door. There are biaes and stereotypes that we don’t know about, that we carry. One who makes changes.#edtechchat
Why do kids need the teachers to allow them to be global collaborators ... we need to give them a purpose to be collaborators if not then they figure it out themselves ... duck lips for everyone because that's how KimK built her following #edtechchat
A2 we are also learning about the #SDGs and Ss are incorporating these into their #pbl , excited to see what they have learned, later this week #edtechchat
A2b: We also create opportunities for our students to travel globally during interim week and we have an international student program for students to attend our school from other places in the world #edtechchat
A4 - "innovator designer" standard - give Ss a task to design local product. *Then*, have them design same product but for someone in a different country (like South Africa or India). Does what they design still work? #edtechchat
We can start openly licensing our teaching materials and building up the Commons rather than feeding the publishing beasts and allowing our labor and knowledge to be exploited. #edtechchat
#edtechchat#globaled18 A2 By allowing them to take ownership of learning through actual participation in global projects dealing with real world problems that promote global awareness , empathy and action-taking.
Service learning is a really great entry point for global. @bwileyone often refers to different ways you can infuse global into what you already do in a school. #edtechchat#globaled18
A2: I see @iste Standards focusing on what technology can do to help nurture students into proactive thinkers, authors, & designers of solutions they want to see in the world. Understanding that there is talent across the globe that can collaborate w/ them is huge! #edtechchat
Agreed. And local-->digital-->global doesn't have to happen in that order, or even in the same year. Citizenship is amorphous and better taught in context #edtechchat
In reply to
@ajpodchaski, @elemenous, @TheTechRabbi
A2 Innovative design jumps out at me. Working collaboratively to unearth everyday problems across cultures and iterating, with the help of the other class, possible solutions. #edtechchat
A2: To me, you start by building your VR, AR, and storytelling abilities for your local community, then you use those tools to find other places to explore and exchange stories. I don't like just consuming info about a remote location, we need to share us #globaled18#edtechchat
Don't make it complicated. Find people who live somewhere else different from where you live. Have children compare lives, then move on to tocal issue each can tackle and discuss, then do global issue together. Okay its complicated. #edtechchat
#edtechchat but they must be taught these skills in person. First our students are not always being taught as of late the interpersonal skills necessary to be good citizens
A2c one of my favorite global connections was when 6th graders were studying the Philippines and having a friend/teacher video talk to our students and answer their questions about her country and culture #edtechchat
We're all pretty complex. I think we avoid conflict by gravitating toward the similarities we have with people, not toward "similar" people. We may risk a group mindset in this space, but if we truly knew one another well, we'd know differences we're not asking about. #edtechchat
A4: I love checking out #edtechchat, #INeLearnchat, and the #tlap chats! I love reading great tweets and exploring the hashtags included in them. I guess I am a “Twitter Wanderer” at times! #4thchat
A2 sharing your story and contributing to the larger conversation is an important part of citizenship. Many of the ISTE standards encourage and support those skills #edtechchat
A2 #edtechchat Keep global project simple & attainable. Global Goal #12 - we're designing graphics for reusable grocery bags, collab between Spain and my Ss, in Eng and Span. Expand from there, Ss have great ideas.
A3: Educators need help building their skills in order to help their students! Twitter chats, blogs and in person networking are all ways for teachers to share ideas, collaborate and learn! #edtechchat
Every year we choose a culture to focus on. We are very lucky to have a diverse population in our school and surrounding communities. Asking children who have come to the US to come speak to our Ss is very powerful. Similarities and differences #edtechchat
Global citizens want to learn not only about the world, but also with, in, and for the world. (I can't take credit for that...but I like the way it sounds.) #edtechchat
A3 Get out of your silos....Twitter is a great way to connect internationally. I sent out an SOS wanting to know more about Australia of my students and connected with a teacher that creating a great learning opportunity for our students with the help of her students #edtechchat
#edtechchat I connect with people with different backgrounds much more often now that I live in #santiago than when I was in #santamonica Living abroad FTW !
A3 Get out of your silos....Twitter is a great way to connect internationally. I sent out an SOS wanting to know more about Australia of my students and connected with a teacher that creating a great learning opportunity for our students with the help of her students #edtechchat
#edtechchat A3 - It has been hammer home recently that in order to collaborate authentically and fully with my colleagues, I first need to educate myself and build my educational network. Whether through in person, conferences, or Twitter, having something to contribute is first
I must admit that I have concerns that the adults in our children’s lives are not modeling good citizenship: a willingness to learn from people with different perspectives. I’m seeing far too many examples of name calling when people don’t think the way we do. #edtechchat
In reply to
@Hypepraise, @nathan_stevens, @elemenous, @iste
Yep hard to argue you have true global citizenship without traveling the globe.
I think deep cultural understanding takes ongoing time and a Skype chat or letter lesson simply won't do it.
#edtechchat
A3 Shameless plug: One place that teachers can find ways to meet ISTE standards is through my online conference @GlobalEdCon. All sessions are archived and are great resources for PD. https://t.co/5RtDPVWFDZ#globaled18#edtechchat
A3) Educators should focus their technological development on aspects of delivery towards the students, this is the most important aspect of teaching in general, there may be other additions and features that help learning but the main advantage is communication #edtechchat
#edtechchat I deliberately follow people in unrelated fields - library science, ethnic studies, literature. I admit I tried following some people who I just could not understand. Could never see the attraction of knitting.
A2 Trying to teach ESL students how to use social media to communicate/interact with students in other parts of the world. Also trying to teach them what they should and should not post. They are digital immigrants just learning how to use social media. #EdTechChat#GlobalEd18
I must admit that I have concerns that the adults in our children’s lives are not modeling good citizenship: a willingness to learn from people with different perspectives. I’m seeing far too many examples of name calling when people don’t think the way we do. #edtechchat
In reply to
@Hypepraise, @nathan_stevens, @elemenous, @iste
A3 We study non-ficiton narrative in WW at the same time we focus on immigration. We ask Ss to interview individuals who have moved to the US & to craft the narrative. They learn about a new life, make connections w/ others, & share their learning w/ the community. #edtechchat
Teachers also have to see that this is important. We are not in the same world our teachers grew up in. Ubiquitous connectivity means being more mindful of the bigger world around us AND teaching it. #edtechchat
A3 so much easier today to connect and collab with social media, #edtech just have to pick one and get started, set up a way to communicate, easy tools like @padlet@Flipgrid to talk/share experiences #edtechchat
#edtechchat collaborating with other teachers. Participating in global chats & discussion forums. Sharing knowledge equity. I am a teacher liaison for the space foundation in CO a few years ago teachers from India joined our group meaning new experiences & knowledge are shared
A3: collaboration starts at home. Work with your fellow teachers, then reach out to the district, then go bigger. Eventually, you will find lots of awesome people to work with #globaled18#edtechchat
Yes, i've started building my PLN outside of edus...I've got a great group of Voice User Interface creators that keep me on the cutting edge #edtechchat
A2: 1 thing educators can do to help students meet the GC standard is to find exchange opportunities through @ECAatState & help students apply for programs in the U.S. & abroad where they can meet and work with youth worldwide, F2F or virtually! #edtechchat#globaled18
A3: collaboration starts at home. Work with your fellow teachers, then reach out to the district, then go bigger. Eventually, you will find lots of awesome people to work with #globaled18#edtechchat
I get the whole need for "standards" but do you think "standards" prevents us from seeing the non-standardized kids' actions ... Raise money for kids in another part of the world = praise ... play in the #1 guild in the world ... nothing #edtechchat
#edtechchat#globaled18 Through communities of practice that model and showcase stages of empathizing, defining ,ideating, prototyping, testing and readjusting outcomes and processes based on feedback..
@Mozilla organizes a global sprint every year encouraging folks to hack on an open source project or start themselves. Great first bugs and non technical opportunities. #edtechchat
A1: the world around us - abroad and at home - requires us to have an understanding of others, ourselves and our shared challenges, narratives, and opportunities ahead #edtechchat@StevensInit
A4 Twitter is a very powerful tool for my learners. They peek at the class account, @45Flyers, and are eager to see what is happening in other classrooms locally and abroad. #edtechchat#ConnectED
I visited schools in India recently that had no tech. One had 68 kids in a class. That's the norm for many schools in the world and it's important that we still have a long way to go for making connections in a lot of places; something I've been thinking about lately. #edtechchat
Our ES teachers use Twitter to post about what they are doing in their classes - it even serves as good way for other teachers at our school to see inside classrooms! #EdTechChat
#edtechchat A4 - Been using @Flipgrid a lot, but really just getting students to read the news or interact with global research databases like Gale or EBSCO. Trying to figure out a way to get my students to pair with a friend's classroom in the Middle East.
I also worked with students in India to learn HTML (I was in Connecticut) they used bricks from abandoned houses to make html tag building blocks. #edtechchat
A number of Ps & community members enjoy the quick updates while others gravitate toward the S generated blog for more long form writing. All shares S learning and inspires connection. Please share the ES T handle so I can pass it along to my Ss. #edtechchat
Q5: What sorts of tools and resources would you like to see developed in the future to support the development of global competence in teachers and students? Anything on your wishlist? #edtechchat#globaled18
What they "should" be doing or what we WANT them to do ... i think there is a difference. In education there is a ton of what we want them to do, but that does not mean that is what they should be doing. #edtechchat
A5: Communities to help make connections. To propose projects, match up with partner schools and take some of that leg work out and make it easier to collaborate and find each other! #EdTechChat
When I was in Trinidad last year I was really surprised at the class size in elementary school. However, the schools in Belize & Trinidad had computers as new as many US schools I visited - because MANY urban & reservation schools have outdated tech #edtechchat
With Q5, I was hoping maybe #edtech companies might listen to our ideas instead of building more test prep etc. tools and resources. :) Not an easy question. I want tools that allow for student creativity and collaboration! #edtechchat#globaled18
#edtechchat More grants to travel and be a part of the world, to be selfish. However, for my students I would like to see VR/AR be paired with @googlemaps to walk students through locations and see the world in the classroom.
A4: Instagram and WhatsApp because that is what my students use. Padlet because it is easy for ESL students to manage in L2 and you can do so much with it. #EdTechChat#GlobalEd18
just thinking now that I would love to create a @nearpod lesson and add in activities and virtual tours and other resources to share w/our #pbl classrooms, and we can explore through this too, just as an option #edtechchat
Not only does @elemenous host a great conversation, she provides a wealth of resources to educators seeking to increase students’ global citizenship. Thank you! #edtechchat
Given that we (in the U.S.) live in a *country* that’s so diverse, maybe being a good global citizen = being a good citizen, period: realizing yours isn’t the only perspective, and entering interactions looking to understand and not to convince. #edtechchat@globaledchat
I think, as educators, we spend too much time trying to define what kids should be learning/doing and in the process hinder what they could be doing. Are we limiting kid potential? #edtechchat#edchat#fledchat
With Q5, I was hoping maybe #edtech companies might listen to our ideas instead of building more test prep etc. tools and resources. :) Not an easy question. I want tools that allow for student creativity and collaboration! #edtechchat#globaled18
Yes! Our local Rotary helped fund a service trip to Guatemala for a Ss group I took a few yrs ago. They are happy to help out young people learning about the world and the value of service. #edtechchat
A5: would love to see students use VR in real time virtual exchange to walk their peers through their neighborhoods/lives. Talk about a way to build (and hopefully later, measure, empathy) #edtechchat
#edtechchat#globaled18 A5 VR and teaching in virtual worlds with students as prosumers and curators of content integrating MI ,hard and soft skills providing an answer to a global or local problem or creating new artifacts.
that is a great idea, we have been creating with @cospaces_edu and Ss are collab in the same space sitting next to each other, how awesome to collab w/Ss around the world? #edtechchat#globaled18#arvrinedu
In reply to
@heyheyman, @207teacherguy, @cospaces_edu
A5: I'd like to see more low bandwidth #edtech tools utilizing mobile phones come out so more teachers in remote places can connect to the world. #edtechchat#globaled18
Shameless plug - I started making bilingual games because I got sick of people recommending SOAP OPERAS as a way to learn Spanish https://t.co/MtXoArtIvU#edtechchat Plus, kids play video games
We currently do not use any VR in our school - I think a lot of the tech isn't quite there yet... but not something to turn a blind eye to. #EdTechChat
In reply to
@Rdene915, @207teacherguy, @cospaces_edu
Given that we (in the U.S.) live in a *country* that’s so diverse, maybe being a good global citizen = being a good citizen, period: realizing yours isn’t the only perspective, and entering interactions looking to understand and not to convince. #edtechchat@globaledchat
A5 maybe a list of tech-enabled schools? We rely on friends abroad. A list could look like "Google school Red level" would mean G accounts and teacher computer. #edtechchat
A5 Accessible, affordable, and exceptional instructional coaching for any teacher who wants it, regardless of fiscal, geographic, or time limitations #edtechchat
I signed up and hope to hear more from this community and how I can help my school get involved! We may be your first sign up from the Philippines! #EdTechChat
A6: What professional development resources would you recommend if educators want to learn more about leveraging technology to connect their classrooms to the world? #edtechchat#globaled18
A5: More slow chats on Twitter. With the difference in time zones, it is not always possible for global educators from around the world to simultaneously connect in a live chat like this one. #EdTechChat#GlobalEd18
A6: Twitter chats like this one! Seriously one of the most amazing ways to make connections and learn from others. Best place to start; always up to date and quick moving! #EdTechChat
#edtechchat A6 - Honestly, Twitter has been a great boon. Seeing A: all the awesome teachers and gleaning resources from them and B: knowing that I am not alone in how I approach teaching, have both been more helpful than anything else. Trying to get my whole dept on Twitter
How about an open curriculum repository for globaled that allows educators to not only draw from but also facilitates discussion? Many resources and networks are scattered, require registration, and are not sustainable in developing nations. #edtechchat
With Q5, I was hoping maybe #edtech companies might listen to our ideas instead of building more test prep etc. tools and resources. :) Not an easy question. I want tools that allow for student creativity and collaboration! #edtechchat#globaled18
If you can't attend this in person, we're hosting a summit at #Empower18 in Boston on Friday. You can watch some of it on our FB page: https://t.co/jWhQoVzNXQ and there is a Participate portal for this, too. I'll find the link. #edtechchat#globaled18
Thanks to hosts and moderators of #edtechchat tonight. So inspiring and exciting to connect with like-minded global educators. Let's continue the conversations and exchange of ideas.
Thanks for joining this week’s #edtechchat! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from tonight! And follow @GlobalEdCon and #globaled18 to learn more about Global Leadership Week and more!
A6: check out https://t.co/Ay8HXIiqbc for teacher and learner resources, especially FORUM magazine. We are moving into the #OER world and all new pubs are going to be open access, free, remixable, etc. We are always expanding and looking for content! #globaled18#edtechchat
