Welcome to #ATchat. Our topic tonight is Tech for students with intellectual disabilities. We will focus on learner variability and not skill deficits. Let’s share our bright ideas which promote independence and success!

Q1: #ATchat - Often times, students are assigned 1:1 paraprofessionals which can promote dependence. Instead, how can technology promote independence for elementary age students with intellectual disabilities?
by implementing supports that ultimately promote independence by building and reinforcing skills necessary for independence. Audiobooks, built in accessibility features and @mi_livescribe. Check out their newest pen here. https://t.co/q31pvI3maW#atchat
A2 - Let me count the ways! Technology can provide text to speech word completion and prediction, provide visual supports, provide repetition and reviews through videeos and screencasting. #ATchat

Audiobooks allow students to read and comprehend text independently with the smart pen helps student take their own notes. No more scribes readers #atchat
Definitely depends on the disability but it could assist with communication in a large way for our students who may have any type of verbal or hearing disability #atchat
Love that I popped on here at the right time to join #ATchat I’m Cassidy an intervention specialist for an MD unit (with lots of inclusion!) in Ohio and I have the most fabulous group of hard working students this year.
A1: early and well integrated use of tech increases independence esp in communication. A 1:1 is needed sometimes but good tech use would lead to far less Paras. #ATChat

I believe with all the high tech features on devices students can be more independent throughout their daily lives at school. Specifically there are devices out there that help students turn their text into speech which helps with comprehension #ATchat

Hi there! I'm Therese and I'm a pre-service English and secondary ed major at University of Montana Western. I'm super excited to be a part of this chat! #ATchat

A1: technology can help to reduce dependence on adults. Instead of having an adult read, the student can use STT or audiobooks or high-interest books written at their level. #ATchat
A2 - Love the Simplify tool in Premium Read & Write for Google, ReadWorks with grade and lexile levels, creating content in Book Creator and Pictello. Definitely Tar Heel Reader. #ATchat

Thank you, and the content in this discussion is very interesting. I'm afraid I won't be able to contribute much, but I am interested in learning new ways of differentiation or adaption for my future classes. #ATchat
A2 depends somewhat on what it is. Scaling reading level is big, in snap and read, readworks, tumblebooks etc is a good start and decreases teacher prep bc it's one assignment #ATChat
I currently have many Deaf students who have 1:1 paraprofessionals. One student specifically also has an intellectual disability and she uses an iPad to communicate as well as ASL. This is the first year and I’ve found that she can be more independent when she is using it #ATchat
' Iready' which assess the students in both math and reading. There are also daily lessons that students can complete. I get all the results from my students performance. Which is great bc I can pick which lessons they do based off their performance #ATchat
My son couldn't stand the Paras hovering over him. Definitely agree that good training is imperative for teachers and students. Favorite game is Quiddler. Large enough letters for visually impaired child. #ATchat
A2 - I've also copied content from ReadWorks into Book Creator which simplifies the visual presentation and allows for highlighted TTS. #Appsmashing#ATchat
A2. It depends on the students cognitive abilities, I feel that students need to feel that they are still part of the lesson and not notice and be self conscious about their learning needs. #ATchat
Feel like I'm learning a lot so far about the variety of behavior students have towards needing paraprofessionals. Not something I ever thought about before! #ATchat

A2: It depends on the student and the activity. Some things we use include: Newsela, Tarheel Read, Start to Finish, and Start to Finish Literacy Starters. #ATchat

A2 Love Unique Learning and News2You. Also tools like Rewordify and Text compactor. Read & Write for Chrome has a simplify tool that scales web pages #ATchat
A2 - With Google Classroom, everyone student can get their own universally designed assignment. So much is possible so why are teachers still relying on worksheets that students can't read or write legibly on? #ATchat
A2: The iPad also provides visual support with a picture agenda for each day. This is something we just added this week in the classroom and it has been working phenomenally. #ATchat
Q3: Talk about curriculum to support S learning. Are you using existing curriculum materials or creating/customizing materials? Or both? How do you address accessibility? #ATchat
A-2 Paul V Sherlock has simplified texts to favorite books. Used to use PixWriter and Booardmaker Symbolate to make rebus text. Use PASS software to create word supports for Unity & LAMP AAC users #ATchat

A 2.Seesaw also provides students to work at their own pace. Also allowing the teacher to assign differentiated work to their students. I highly recommend this free app! It is a digital work profile! #atchat
A3 most of my support materials are created specifically for the student. We are using recycled materials but modified and created for the students needs. #ATchat
A-2 we also created lit kits & story boxes!here in Loudoun that supported literature with simplified texts, puzzles, games, props, manipulatives, communication boards, etc. #ATchat
Also, I show teachers the voice notes feature built into their free premium version of Read & Write. So many ways to integrate and support learners. #ATchat
I feel it’s a combination of the two. Teachers should always be coming up with new strategies but why fix what’s not broken with what’s in place? #atchat
A3- using combo of pre-made and authentic curriculum. Making any curriculum accessible takes time, and finding staff to complete is tricky! Finding the need for more PD for paras! #ATchat
Seesaw - YES! Great free tool for universal design to reach all learners!!!! And parents love it - can be used for home/school communication

A-3 things as simple as PowerPoint with interactive pages, hyperlinks & narration can be used. Service clubs can help make them. They can be printed with additional props so that they can be viewed both on the computer and in hand. #ATchat
I’ve spent some time this last week talking to my grad students about presenting books with an emphasis on core vocab as well as the use of props/manipulatives to keep kids engaged. #ATchat
We also made court kit using simple books like go dog go and supplemented them with activities and manipulatives that could “go”. We used some of the supports from AAC learning lab and DynaVox, and Core Word of the Week from TpT also. #ATchat
A4 - Definitely Book Creator and Pictello due to universal features which promote independence and allow students to demonstrate learning in engaging ways. #ATchat
A1: I student teach at a school in the adapted physical education classes, and the students who have trouble communicating, will use their own ipad and click on pictures or words to create sentences. Without this, communication would be lacking. #atchat#edfb4338
A3: Most of my materials are shared with another teacher in my program. Accessibility is a top priority in a Deaf classroom. Thankfully BrainPop videos have subtitles!! #ATChat
A4. I would recommend having students , depending on their skill and ability levels, create screencasting videos, podcasts, songs/ music videos, even vlogs. #ATchat
Personally I am a fan of printing panel sheets and have students draw their own comics. There are however many online generators such as storyboardcreator! #atchat
So interested in this.... Is there a master list of the materials you might share as I'm launching year of core for district in Jan. #iamcrazy#caringissharing#atchat
In reply to
@JudithSchoonov1, @VickiBostonSLP, @KarenJan
A4. I love the use of Socratic Seminars and my students love them! Great strategy to use especially if your students love to talk, it allows them the opportunity to talk. #atchat
A4: I love having my students create hands on projects that they can share and enjoy while creating. We just finished making Iroquois scrapbooks! #ATChat
Q5: #ATchat - Let’s talk access to technology. Do your students with ID have access to the technology they need? How can we ensure they have access to the technology which promotes independence?
A5 - My observation is many teachers rely on "traditional" instructional methods (worksheets, especially). Time to replace less effective methods which technology which promotes success and independence. #ATchat

A5: We use iPads and chromebooks and my Ss can use either. All of their visual schedules are on iPads using Choiceworks app so they have access to an iPad at all times (essentially). #ATchat
I’ve noticed even a short discussion on levels of prompts/cues for AAC can make a big difference in student independence. Dedicated time for some professional development can go even further. #ATchat
Absolutely. But in my four recent PDs with over 150 people, only a handful were aware of SeeSaw, and only as parents of students who's teachers use it!! WHY? #ATchat
Q6: Let’s talk transition. What are some strategies/tools you implement to provide “life” accommodations as students transition into adulthood (work, post secondary school, community) #ATchat
A-5 with the traditional definition of technology as “tools”, low tech props real ice experiences” and manipulatives can be as powerful as apps and online supports. Thinking about SETT, there is something for everyone #ATchat
and...since it can be web based via the website - classroom only needs A device with web access. Look for some underused tech around school. I found some old Nook tablets at a school and we used those by accessing the web #ATchat
A4. I would recommend having students , depending on their skill and ability levels, create screencasting videos, podcasts, songs/ music videos, even vlogs. #ATchat
Many districts have some sort of LMS with a parent portal. The feeling seems to be that SeeSaw is redundant. Not used to communicate/show work/portfolio, etc No one wants "yet one more thing" #ATchat
A6: Two of my students are 21 and in their last year of school before graduating and starting their jobs. They’re both also ENL students. We’ve done a lot with Marshall Adult Education. https://t.co/RQhVOshU3n#ATchat
A-6 some of the schools in my district our starting young with students in elementary classes gardening, doing a farmers market, running a coffee cart, running the list & found, etc. economics, social skills, organizing buy attribute, are all built in to the experience. #ATchat
A5 I teach preschool and most of my students don’t need alternative communication devices. Those who are non verbal or need communication help get that help from our great speech therapists. Pecs works great as well #ATchat
A6: We’ve also been doing a lot of job interview preparation. Our director of Special Ed is conducting practice interviews with each of our students. #ATchat
Totally see where you are coming from. I do not have it on my settings that my students parents can view their work. I use it more to show the parents where the child is thriving or struggling. #ATchat
Definitely worth a second look - so many possibilities and an awesome tool for UDL. Browse the library, create activities, let students compose journals with drawings, video, audio, text, use for home school communication and also has a labeling feature! #ATchat#SeeSaw
I love it, and the students love it. I told them it is like a Instagram for your school work. Since they can post pictures of their work on it too! Great tutorials are also provided on the website. #Atchat
A6: Choiceworks app for scheduling, video models, social stories via google slides with narration. Should I say it again, Pic Collage to list steps or categorize. Love that app! @PicCollage#ATchat
A-6 The middle schoolers are doing teacher selected services like bulletin boards & library reshelving, high schoolers are running copying services and a snack shop #ATchat

No one is saying that they cannot use SeeSaw, but the one elem teacher who tried it last year got no response from parents. I agree- great tool, have to work on buy-in #ATchat
I work with some amazing occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and teachers who are dedicated to moving our kids along at a much younger age. We can’t wait until high school for transition. #ATchat
A5: I’ve seen many of my students tell me these overly funny detailed stories but once it’s time to write independently they lose the story. Now my students use their webcams to video record themselves tell the story then watch it back while writing independently #ATChat
My k-4 class is walking to Kroger next week to get things for a mini-Thanksgiving meal. We used the Pic Collage app today to start brainstorming the items we’ll need. My plan is to go to Kroger and take pictures around the store to help some of them find their items #atchat
