Hello Justin from NJ middle school social studies.
A1) Culture is shaped by the leadership.
A1: The school leadership should help create the school culture!
When all stakeholders have a voice, a culture of leadership flourishes
A1 Leaders build relationships that flow into a community and positive culture
Hi Kathryn. Thanks for joining
School leaders set the tone for the school - staff and students
As the amazing says... if the principal sneezes, the whole school catches a cold! Leadership=culture!
Hi! Thanks. Happy to join in and learn.
A1It is the educator leaders in the building who "raise all ships" and work toward improving school culture. https://t.co/Yqd5zaiJ4b
A1: Leaders help provide the environment where people can do their best work. That builds culture.
A1: I feel that the culture of a school is what really influences the leadership.
school leaders (and not just admin) lay the foundation for a school's culture - such an important part of educational leadership!
A1: Probably in every way possible, no? https://t.co/rSiC4smlX0
Q1: How are school culture and school leadership connected?
A1: Positive school cultures are founded and developed when leaders embody the voice of the learners.
A1 School leaders help define school culture, for better & worse but good leaders help school unite, brand & build!
A1 School Leadership set the stage for whatever happens each year and how it is received. https://t.co/tEl0BqDybb
Q1: How are school culture and school leadership connected?
Or a school that's falling apart... https://t.co/2L9psTo2SZ
A1: "Show me a school that doesn't trust its leader, and I will show you a school that has yet to meet its potential."
A1 culture will guide leadership and leadership will bring culture
A1: school culture reflects general perception of school leadership
Culture change is a shared responsibility. Many talk about trust but Hemingway had it perfectly: https://t.co/NOWJA0jcUv
Hi Justin. Thanks for joining
Good point Nick. Think it works both ways?
How is it a 2-way street? Share more...
We need leaders to help grow and nurture the culture, and then culture reciprocates and grows leaders
Yes! Exactly. And teachers need to feel comfortable doing what is best for kids at ALL TIMES. https://t.co/X6UT8ryQFO
A1: Leaders help provide the environment where people can do their best work. That builds culture.
Barb, academic coach, Minnesota looking forward to tonight's
says it best,"When the principal sneezes the whole school catches the cold!"(Good and bad!)
Hello, . Cara from MO umping in a bit late after my girls' bedtime!
What makes you say that, Nick? https://t.co/TaYUetXLbS
A1: I feel that the culture of a school is what really influences the leadership.
A1: Leadership can only promote positive culture to the extent the followers will accept the promotion.
Culture in schools is built on relationships. Want a positive culture? You need healthy relationships rooted in trust & respect.
A1: Bad leadership or a lack of trust can be toxic to culture. Strong leadership can shape culture.
Good point!
Leaders = Not just admin!
https://t.co/EJ1ZW53jeH
school leaders (and not just admin) lay the foundation for a school's culture - such an important part of educational leadership!
Hey great to see you hosting !
YES!! Totally agree with that- trust impacts culture- great point!
A1 Leadership is the P.R. department for THE VISION & build the buy in so all involved parties collaborate to build school culture!
How does a leader embody the voice of learners? That doesn't happen by accident. https://t.co/mu9MFCi6fe
A1: Positive school cultures are founded and developed when leaders embody the voice of the learners.
A1: Leadership..all those in the seat will set the culture by model, encouragement and support. As well as expectations.
TOTALLY agree! For true change to take root and move 4ward teacher leaders must be leading. https://t.co/aAdD8KYsMd
Good point!
Leaders = Not just admin!
https://t.co/EJ1ZW53jeH
school leaders (and not just admin) lay the foundation for a school's culture - such an important part of educational leadership!
interesting point Darren. Do you think teachers influence culture more than the leadership?
A1: school culture and school ldrs - alignment is vital. Building a better ship requires parts from the same factory.
A1: Sometimes poor followership is just as guilty of creating a bad culture as poor leadership.
Seek out their interests and what engages them in learning and speak that same language. https://t.co/VSrP83XoJH
How does a leader embody the voice of learners? That doesn't happen by accident. https://t.co/mu9MFCi6fe
A1: Positive school cultures are founded and developed when leaders embody the voice of the learners.
. Everyone's a leader when given the opportunity!
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
A1 A good school leadership team will also effectively read the school/community culture and respond accordingly
Absolutely. Strength (good or bad) in numbers.
I might say... everyone's a leader whether you want to or not. https://t.co/XEDIBQ6dpK
. Everyone's a leader when given the opportunity!
I think teachers more & more ARE the leadership.
interesting perspective. I would argue that the leadership has a greater impact on the trajectory of the culture.
A2: Be apart of the conversation, sit and observe, give feedback, do some team moment of teaching.
. Thanks. I just wrote a on this topic. Everyone's great here tonight!
Retweet Q2. https://t.co/1OdipZ5e3W

. SO true. We get distracted, too. SO much going on. Be fully present.
Ohhh... is your love language QUALITY TIME? https://t.co/1FWceig2hD
A2: The greatest gift of service you can give to someone is to be completely present when you are with them
Leadership sets the tone, builds the shared vision, and hopefully inflames the passion and purpose.
A2: Don't just show up. Be there and ENGAGE.
A2: Just being side-by-side. Get in there and get dirty. As a classroom T I'd welcome leadership anytime! https://t.co/DSWmVpCt5s
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
YES! Great point Rita- we must engage with teachers, collaborate with teachers & listen to teachers!
A2: ask questions. Seek input and follow through with it
Great opener to conversation. "What's on your mind?" https://t.co/PmshoG7PUN
A2 - Talk to people - faculty, students, parents - especially the ones outside of your tribe. Ask "what's on your mind?"
great point Ashley- listening is key!
A2: be out there. In classes, in hallways, sharing stories. Be a trusted presence. The Wolfpack needs all hunters.
Vulnerable, honest, real, relevant. Uh huh! https://t.co/RzXZcyr3hS
A2: When leaders are vulnerable enough to learn beside kids and teachers, it feels like presence and engagement.
Kind of a chicken/egg conundrum. Too complex to sum up thoughts in a Tweet.
A2: Visibility is seen. Presence is felt.
A2- Engage teachers and students, encourage teacher leadership, give constructive feedback, give Ts a chance to take risks.
A2 Bring others to the table. Allow teacher leaders and other stake holders to have a seat at the table with power.
Positively AND negatively... choice is theirs. https://t.co/mOQOOXDTAt
Leadership sets the tone, builds the shared vision, and hopefully inflames the passion and purpose.
A2) Move from "admin" areas to learning areas. Both Ts learning & Ss learning.
A2 - Ask "what do you think people are scared to tell me/us?" (<- the leadership)
A1: Will leader support ts? Celebrate success & be champ in fails? Leadership IS culture-starts&ends there https://t.co/eEYXm3ez6j
Q1: How are school culture and school leadership connected?
I think it's powerful when leaders ask those they lead to provide feedback too. https://t.co/prHNupCoZv
A2: Be apart of the conversation, sit and observe, give feedback, do some team moment of teaching.
. Be the phantom, omnipresent.
Being visible may be in the best interest of the leader; being present & engaged is in the best interest of the whole community!
Agree. https://t.co/P1iLLQN2Pe
A2: The greatest gift of service you can give to someone is to be completely present when you are with them
And emotionally present if not sharing space.
A2] Acknowledge the great work they do! Often & with specifics!
A2 I think honesty & authenticity go a long way in helping leaders engage-clear communication is key!
A2: Yes--we need to seek data of our own leadership. https://t.co/OMw9amReEh
I think it's powerful when leaders ask those they lead to provide feedback too. https://t.co/prHNupCoZv
A2: Be apart of the conversation, sit and observe, give feedback, do some team moment of teaching.
A2 Being available, open, and encouraging.
And all members of that community need to tell that same story! https://t.co/7mQdjigcji
Being visible may be in the best interest of the leader; being present & engaged is in the best interest of the whole community!
I love when admins refer to themselves as lead learners. That is certainly a change in culture.
I can definitely feel a communal pulse in schools where it's fostered vs ones where there is a 1 way mandate!
A2: we need a realistic view of our organization-evaluate stakeholder needs and share; work collaboratively to address needs of all
Literally the best thing you have ever tweeted my friend. That's awesome. https://t.co/UaqBv6varm
Being visible may be in the best interest of the leader; being present & engaged is in the best interest of the whole community!
Be authentic in ur presence.Ts, Ss, Staffulty know when it is real. Being present & by how much is a choice. https://t.co/dl4zIajfxQ
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
You can show appreciation through their love language to get best response.
Being engaged is about knowing your kids' names, knowing their families & knowing the teachers as people; its about relationships!
One and a half chapters in...acts of service or quality time! Yours?
Hi all. Joining a bit late. Looking forward to the rest of the chat.
A2: Listen. Really, truly listen. Participate, from wiping lunch tables to bus duty. Be involved, honest, and hear people.
When someone asks me for my feedback, I feel like I matter enough to be asked.
A2: ldrs must be vulnerable...trust is a two way street.
Service.... hands down, my love language is service. Lowest = Words of Affirmation.
https://t.co/znF0QEjgkI
One and a half chapters in...acts of service or quality time! Yours?
What great language! That definitely puts the learning at the centre and highlights the reciprocity : ) https://t.co/LebNxCzVHR
I love when admins refer to themselves as lead learners. That is certainly a change in culture.
Leadership and culture are almost synonymous.
It's all about building and sustaining relationships
Totally agree. Can't fool people. They know when you are engaged and when you are just taking up space
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
What do you mean vulnerable?
A2: Listen.Implement PD on twitter4skool & create a school PLN...daily motivation w/ personalization is key! https://t.co/dl4zIajfxQ
Q2: As school leaders, how can we go from simply being visible to being present and engaged?
yes!
It's SO important to stop and take the time to do it. https://t.co/88UzBcqlqc
Being engaged is about knowing your kids' names, knowing their families & knowing the teachers as people; its about relationships!
. Brave and true statement for T Appreciation Week. We serve, our passion, our calling.
Hello all...joining late. Jessica Gomez, principal of in Colton, ca. Looking forward to the learning!
Retweet Q3. https://t.co/2pFlI3uofU
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
A3: Structures that speak to students' interest. Time to make, tinker, create, FAIL, redo, build, seek own research interests.
Building a school-wide culture of learning.
Well, let's hope we're doing work we love and have a love of learning.
A3: We are becoming a school next year - super excited to put the focus on Ss
. Agreed and this is a HUGE issue for leaders. Feel of failure puts up a wall. Tough to break down
And that goes a long way toward shaping healthy school cultures. https://t.co/N4KFVHXEAn
YES! It's quite plainly saying, "I value your opinion." Nothing is more empowering than that.
Kids need to have a voice in their educational experience! That is a necessary structure for making schools more about kids.
Sounds like a classroom. https://t.co/vvlHMVQnNA
A3: Structures that speak to students' interest. Time to make, tinker, create, FAIL, redo, build, seek own research interests.
A3: Student leadership. Listening to, valuing, and implementing student input. https://t.co/bJZEA6NBbd
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
A3: I think a student leadership team at a school level would help create more student centered classrooms.
A3 - Figure out how much student choice you're comfortable with and then try to double it. Learners need choice & voice above all.
A3: always asking ourselves if the decision we are making is the best for kids.
A3: Learning about students' passions and developing a relationship for risk taking.
A3: Maybe it is less structure we need. Allow time for Ss to learn, be a part of decision making, allow choice.
A3: create a culture that allows students to take ownership of learning - Goal setting and opportunities such as
show emotion, get excited for great things & sadness for rough things. Share the blood, sweat and tears.
A3: Put kids at the center of all decisions. Our board faces pics of our kids during meetings so we never forget why we're there
It can be as simple as seating arrangement. The little things sometimes have the biggest impacts.
A3: In the process of building makerspaces in 6 elementary buildings and 2 secondary buildings. We only speak about the Ss.
A3: We put a picture of our students at meetings.
A3: Schedules that reflect understanding of Ss physiology w/ regard to learning, i.e. start times, movemt breaks, core inst. times.
A3: A simple Google Forms survey in which the adults get feedback from the students can go a long way.
Love this! https://t.co/aaaiwLrRgT
A3: Put kids at the center of all decisions. Our board faces pics of our kids during meetings so we never forget why we're there
Certainly, this can be a leadership challenge. But isn't building a culture together our shared commitment? https://t.co/PXg2u6DlTk
A1: Leadership can only promote positive culture to the extent the followers will accept the promotion.
A3: As many platforms encouraging students as voice of the school - as greeters, community liaison, voice on the answering machine
I think it humbles us too. If we truly appreciate feedback, we show those we serve that they matter. Leadership is service.
A3 - Anyone tinkering with student periods/days? I am eager to try this out next year.
. agreed and LISTEN to them! So important that is not just a team by name.
What does that look like? PIrate Day? https://t.co/Mfzza5AR9R
A3 - Anyone tinkering with student periods/days? I am eager to try this out next year.
Brilliant! At what level? https://t.co/Zh61yYAW7n
A3 - Anyone tinkering with student periods/days? I am eager to try this out next year.
Bravo bravo! See that?!!!! https://t.co/JS27mxKrMm
TOTALLY agree! For true change to take root and move 4ward teacher leaders must be leading. https://t.co/aAdD8KYsMd
Good point!
Leaders = Not just admin!
https://t.co/EJ1ZW53jeH
school leaders (and not just admin) lay the foundation for a school's culture - such an important part of educational leadership!
A1: Ts greatest impact on student learning - principals greatest impact on school culture - great resource to help
A3 Student choice is a big factor in realigning schools towards students-incorporating a & makes an impact!
. A3: Genius Hour, all day!
It always goes back to relationships. When somebody truly cares. The rest falls into place. https://t.co/WOILGd6Ewf
Being engaged is about knowing your kids' names, knowing their families & knowing the teachers as people; its about relationships!
How do you always have such profound statements in simplest terms? https://t.co/CTNST8kgsC
Leadership and culture are almost synonymous.
A3: Asking Ss what they care about before ASSUMING what they care about, so they have agency in their own experience.
A3: create an environment where the mindset is "failing is not failure" but rather more opportunities to learn
Loving the tonight- such great perspectives about the impact of school leadership!
but don't leave your armor at the door-instead, invite others to use its protection.
what a great point Valerie!
A3: support student input and leadership, integrate with adult leadership
Agreed. I think it's also imperative that teachers show their human side, especially to their students.
yes Ashley- all goes back to relationships!
Another side of that: Being okay with failing yourself! Ss need to see you learn from mistakes as well.
Crazy to think that teachers would hide who they truly are when dealing with Ss all year? https://t.co/FDfDGykcKD
Agreed. I think it's also imperative that teachers show their human side, especially to their students.
Agreed ! These people are way smarter than we are. Should have asked these Qs before writing! Ha! https://t.co/hqoEG8Ucac
Loving the tonight- such great perspectives about the impact of school leadership!
Q4: How and why should leaders be the Chief Storyteller of their space and develop their brand?
LOL! OMG- I literally just thought the same thing! is on FIRE!
A4: If you don't tell your story, someone else will
Leaders must engage all stakeholders in ongoing conversations about learning, which will help build the school's brand
Yes, I would love that when that can happen. https://t.co/jSZq5VJW3N
How about joining in with classroom lessons instead of just walkthrough, observation, evaluation
Agreed@ It is so important for Ss (parents, peers) to see us try, iterate and recover from ideas that 'flop' https://t.co/lXLcFdr4a6
Another side of that: Being okay with failing yourself! Ss need to see you learn from mistakes as well.
A4: Open up your local newspaper--we have to tell the true story. If not, our students are losing out.
Important to remember school leaders include Ss, paraprofessional, families & all who make a difference. https://t.co/TvFAaEVErG
that is a wonderful first step! Next step must be actually enacting their ideas; kids need to develop agency too!
I'm lurking, doing a lot of thinking and learning. :-)
I love that idea. https://t.co/2UX54cZHxN
A3: I think a student leadership team at a school level would help create more student centered classrooms.
We can't wait to get our hands on HACKING LEADERSHIP, part of series. https://t.co/3xyUycK95n
LOL! OMG- I literally just thought the same thing! is on FIRE!
Q4 do you mean the leader's space and brand or the school's?
Retweet Q4. https://t.co/06DS5aF2G3
Q4: How and why should leaders be the Chief Storyteller of their space and develop their brand?
A4: we need to control the story from within otherwise we allow others to control it! We created our own hashtag
A4- if we don't tell it, someone else will and it may not be the truth as we have all seen.
A4: Ldrs need to be proud of the culture they develop and sing its praises. Buy in starts with the top salesman.
hey Kristen- we mean the school's brand & story.
Too often, proof of learning is actually a proof of compliance. We have to give up control to get Ss learning.
Respect lurkers. They display a sign of true intelligence: Listening more than speaking.
As leaders we must celebrate the positive because that will help change the narrative of education, which is too negative now!
A4: If the leader isn't telling the story, s/he probably doesn't know what's going on in the building
has been doing it in her classroom. She would be a GREAT resource. https://t.co/fW8UPuwGtm
A3 - Anyone tinkering with student periods/days? I am eager to try this out next year.
A4: How: by being on the ground, with the kids /Why: so they can lead from where their students need them to lead (student centred)
A4: B/c they are school's greatest champion. B/c taking on the role makes them notice more. B/c if they don't, someone else will.
Or is too caught up in politics. https://t.co/0ex54pHLmb
A4: If the leader isn't telling the story, s/he probably doesn't know what's going on in the building
A4 - School leaders should be actively engaged in their school's social media presence - IG, Twitter, FB, etc.
. A3: Yes, it's important to involve Ss as directors of their learning needs & interests.
This is awesome! Thanks Connie.
A4: The narratives of schools are being told by people who have no affiliation w/ them. We need to shout the amazing things kids do!
A3 Student work's displayed throughout, seating arrangements are conducive to student collaboration, and the adults are listening.
A4: We need leaders with a vision they can believe in and support. They can not and will not make everyone happy...ever.
A4: Ties to Q1-telling great stories fosters a positive culture, which creates more great stories, which fosters - you get the drift
If a leader wants to tell the school story, they must be an engaged part of the story! In fact, the story starts w/ the leadership!
A4: Telling the 'story' also indicates value for the work, learning and producers. The leaders need to be the first ones celebrating
A3
Authentic, relevant tasks. Be facilitators. Stop being afraid to "lose control" & let the Ss really learn https://t.co/P65fMFaov3
Q3: What structures can we put in place to create schools that are more student centered than adult centered?
A4 Leaders create a narrative to grow into, its power comes from a shared story one that is revealed through efforts & dedication
A4: By shared "visioneering" all stakeholders have a say in Vision, then Mission.
Celebrate but don't promote misconceptin that creating culture & brand is easy;it takes intentional thought https://t.co/0lIWkqMgiP
As leaders we must celebrate the positive because that will help change the narrative of education, which is too negative now!
Our use of social media to spread tremendous news about our schools is only just beginning! https://t.co/jjswMpE4C3
it all comes back to vulnerability and presence
A4 Instagram is such a quick way for leaders to SHOW (not tell) their school's story and MS students love doing a
. Yes, be faithful to your brand.
Chiefs.Storytellers.Good school leadershp comes from a team that reps all in the school.Brand? 2 "sell" excellence, innovation et al
Get ready for Q5- it is full of possibilities!
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
A4: chief story tellers are our leaders-providing vibrant picture of current context with future vision, communicating for community
As leaders, we can no longer just share information; we must use pics/videos/etc to tell a story!
I didn't want to generalize but in my surveys of Ts, THAT is the reason they shut down. But it can change! https://t.co/K3aXz4LwIS
Agreed! SM is super powerful for connecting. Not just classdojo, either, because FB & Twitter engage community.
A4: It'dangerous for a new leader to cultivate a story before learning it.
A5 - This is the question that got me super excited for this chat - can't wait to steal ideas!
Missing the thread... what is the reason they shut down?
Leaders sometimes have to do what they think is best even if it goes against popular opinion.
What story is your school telling https://t.co/Hoc2CBaqpG
As leaders, we can no longer just share information; we must use pics/videos/etc to tell a story!
Goals that meet your interests. Resources and PD to help you. Collaboration would truly make it best. https://t.co/0apzhhD70O
Q5: How can we use the philosophy to impact teachers, their learning and their PD?
A5: Provide Ts with time to delve deep into their own interests. Let them play in a makerspace and work on STEAM activities.
I would add the work teachers do also needs to be told by people who understand the complexity of the work Ts do
A5) Genius Hour will also allow teachers to follow passion, take risks and model it for students. Teacher creativity
A5: Make PD "Teacher " and provide capacity to share and explore each others' work.
A4: We really need to celebrate the work of Ts and Ss. They work so hard. Their stories deserve to be told
Yes! Which in turn leads our Ts to be engaged in helping tell our school's story. It's contagious! https://t.co/Eoe3gW0nRV
If a leader wants to tell the school story, they must be an engaged part of the story! In fact, the story starts w/ the leadership!
I so agree abt leadership. Leaders need to be in service of others. And your PLN. Let's celebrate teachers!! https://t.co/3nzW74MBL5
A5: Genius hour is what educators wished they had when they were in school - control of personal individualized engagement
A4: Community doesn't always understand the vision, or a decision in context. In the end the leader is accountable for the brand.
. Some level of dissent is natural. Start with like-minded nucleus. Watch it flourish and branch out!
I make a point to show/talk about what happens on PD days. Might be day off for Ss, but not Ts. https://t.co/myUELdPIkH
I would add the work teachers do also needs to be told by people who understand the complexity of the work Ts do
A4: The school leader is the greatest advocate, they can share their brand to create a culture.
