We might have a small group tonight, yet, I am here, and if you are reading this, you are somewhere, so let’s do this! #resiliencechat
I’m Rob from Northern California, 32-year educator. Please share who is in the #Resiliencechat room tonight!
Hey Rob! Aaron here from Vancouver, Canada. First timer and will need to multitask a bit at some points in the hour but am so glad to have a chat about something so clearly critical in our #world today. Thank you for that!! #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat
Q1 When you think of #courage does a person, or action come to mind. Please share what you think about, and I will share as well what I think about.
A1a: First on a more personal level, #courage to me, especially at the moment, takes the face of my sister verging on the birth of my nephew. Goodness knows my brain has a hard time comprehending all of the trials that #women go through during pregnancy! #resiliencechat

A1 #resiliencechat
I think often of people who have battled back and through in their lives, from despair, trauma, politics, oppression, inequalities, persecution, so there are many images of courageous people that come to mind. I tend to #respect those who have #persevered
A1b: On a broader scale, #courage to me is defined by leaving your life behind and trying to find a better life in a place you know absolutely nothing about. Especially so if you are #displaced against your will as a #refugee. #resiliencechat

Q1 When you think of #courage does a person, or action come to mind. Please share what you think about, and I will share as well what I think about.
A1: A modern example of #courage is Maximillian Kolbe, a priest that took the spot of a Jewish family man in Auschwitz. He gave so that others could live. That man ended up living a while and getting back to his family. #Resiliencechat
I think personal examples like this really help us to see the human side of courage, and I agree, #women have had enormous challenges in their lives that I’m not sure as a man I could really ever comprehend. #resiliencechat

Yeah. But for me that means also learning from these experiences. Once again battling cancer, and taking time to think about what really matters. #resiliencechat
Yes, we have history, current day, and personal examples of courage and they are all important to us as individuals, groups of people, and as #educators#parents And #peoplewhocare#Resiliencechat
Yeah. But for me that means also learning from these experiences. Once again battling cancer, and taking time to think about what really matters. #resiliencechat

Staye with me here: Q2 How has #Fredomofspeech impacted your personal #Resilience development? Like, have you spoken out, written an opinion piece, had a difficult conversation? What was it? When did you #espress yourself?
A2: I am not only a few years into teaching, so I do not know that I have had that moment yet. But, I want to be ready if my voice is needed to bring about positive change. #resiliencechat
A2 I have expressed myself in many ways over the years. Attending marches and rallies helps me to overcome fear of things that are currently going on in our world. #resiliencechat
A2 #resiliencechat I found my voice to speak up about the extreme hatred that is often spewed by politicians, local, state, national, and have sought to share in conversations, and on. Border stage when necessary to counter faulty arguments that are used to manipulate perceptions
A2: #FreedomOfSpeech has had a visceral action in my life. As a coloured person in a non-coloured city, I feel like it is my responsibility to speak for all of those who aren't at the table. Be it in the #arts or #sciences, speaking your #truth goes a long way. #resiliencechat

A2: I wrote an op ed for our local teacher newsletter that showed my true feelings about gun control after Sandy Hook. Violated by Social studies teacher sensibilities but I’ll live #resiliencechat
That is beautiful @AaronPinto It is so important to be aware of the missing pieces to our colorful canvas to be painted, and to seek to help others to see how bright the world can be when we are inclusive, rather than exclusive. #Resiliencechat

Scott, that’s normal and natural. It is so important to continue to expand your perceptions, and be aware of which change you might want to initiate, support, or potentially stop! #resiliencechat#leadwithresilience

All great change comes from violating something or another. As a parent (and as someone who lives 45 minutes from Sandy Hook), thank you. #ResilienceChat

Way to do it Brian. Great to have you on board tonight! #resiliencechat I wrote a blog that asked the question, “What are we missing?” After the Parkland shooting.

Until Jan. 2017, I hadn't done much in the way of protesting. That felt new. It's meaningful to join large crowds, and although you're preaching to the choir where you are, it sends a message. I've also sometimes spoken out against individual things I've heard. #ResilienceChat A2

A3: From what I have seen, we take our speech very seriously. Our Freedom of Speech gives us the ability to speak out and voice our own opinions, which is very important! #resiliencechat
A3: in the social media fueled and partisan dialogue of the day, too many view the freedom in absence of the corresponding responsibilities #resiliencechat
It should be personal to every person who isn't indigenous to the land where they live. But some choose not to remember, or dismiss their own family experience as another time, different circumstances, whatever. #ResilienceChat

#Resiliencechat That is wonderful Jacob! Many students might take this right for granted, or shrug off the responsibilities that come with this right. I have been impressed by the #parkland students for their poise, process, and resolve to share their views.

I would add that the woman who started #MeToo movement helped a lot of us move towards healing. Important to take care of ourselves as well as others. https://t.co/4l2EYtdh5m#resiliencechat
I would tend to agree. We continue to have people who love to swim in the right to free speech, without accepting the responsibility of their speech, actions, and consequences of those listening to them. #resiliencechat

Well keep in mind that some families have been here for generations. I am only a second generation American. Fiddler on the Roof affects me deeply because I can only imagine what my grandparents and siblings experienced. #resiliencechat

Q4 Some might say #Freedomofspeech is alive and well, and others might way we are more #intolerant than ever, Thoughts? Also, do you think it matters if it is local, state, or national perspectives?
I think that when families have been here since before this nation was founded, they have difficulty relating to others who came later. #resiliencechat

@JeremyDBond, @ResiliencyGuy, @AaronPinto
I think about how less than a year ago, the Parkland students were "ordinary" local kids and not nationally famous. How many of us would step up, to have our life uprooted and be willing to feel that exposed? And it's not just the kids; think of @fred_guttenberg. #ResilienceChat

@MissShuganah You have retained the perspective of history that I think many people relinquish. I wonder if the broader perspective one can hold, the better equipped they are to handle additional challenges. #resiliencechat

When 45 was elected, my heart sank. I already feared that terrible things were going to happen here. But I pulled myself together. I honor their memories by being strong. Resilient. #resiliencechat
A4: we have come so far in some of our collective thinking, however the vitriol of the social media era shows a public hatred that is hard to ignore or comprehend #resiliencechat

Q5 It used to be that “sticks and stones” would hurt, not words, now, words are often seen as inflicting wounds that don’t heal. Thoughts?
And @ResiliencyGuy that is why this cancer patient went out in 95 degrees heat to join the #FamiliesBelongTogether rally and march here in Chicago. And very heartening. I've never seen Daley Plaza so jam packed. #resiliencechat
A5: Even though we all have the FoS, what we say can hurt someone if we aren’t careful. I think that is one think that people do not understand. #Resiliencechat
A5: I think the rise in mental health issues is directly related to words, the awful stew of negativity that some people are subjected to on a relentless, daily basis #resiliencechat
A5 Why I am insistent that we cannot use the Yiddish equivalent of the "N" word and pretend that we are just saying "black." Uh, no. You are saying the "N" word. Just in a different language. #resiliencechat
Yes, #studentvoice It is that simple, #hurtishurt When we have the power to inflict pain of any kind, why would we? It is unfortunate that sometimes people, for their own personal motivation, discount the actual #hurt that could occur. #Resiliencechat#Micdrop@JacobFFSUSD

Restricting hate speech is not intolerance, the origin of the hate speech is. I think we're seeing a proliferation of free speech right now, and that boldness has expanded locally. Unfortunately much of it is the intolerant kind. #ResilienceChat A4

Years ago I told one of my sisters in-law off for using the word schwartze. Sure it's also a surname, but context needs to be examined. #resiliencechat
I’m right there with you Jeremy. My fear is that some might try to dissuade people from speaking up against the tide, and use bullying tactics to keep the silent majority, in fact silent. #Resiliencechat

That old saying was well-meaning, probably meant to make kids feel empowered and unharmed by hateful talk against them. But we now know better (I think) that words are weapons. #ResilienceChat A5

A6: the thing that restores my faith is that usually the most intolerant of our speech is it’s own brilliant rainbow of intolerance that few condone #resiliencechat
A5: I think the rise in mental health issues is directly related to words, the awful stew of negativity that some people are subjected to on a relentless, daily basis #resiliencechat
A6: Battling the wholly autocratic way of dictating what is the proper way to speak, think, and be is exactly why we have discussions such as these. #FOS is a basic human right and should be respected without reservation. #resiliencechat

Q7 This question asks, How we might use #tolerance as a tool to support student growth? I also love the word #acceptance. So, feel free to use either.
