#ProsperISD chat open to all in and out of district teachers discussing best practices and working with students K-12. It will occur on the second Thursday of every month at 8:00pm CST.
Hi everyone! I'm Shawna, one of your guest moderators this evening! I teach 8th grade ELAR at @ProsperRogersMS#Prosper4ward Excited to get new ideas tonight!
A1: I think that offering students a choice in their assignments as much as possible is a good way to keep them engaged! Choice boards is an easy way to accomplish this! #Prosper4ward@PISDLiT
Hi I’m Miko Wagstaff from Richardson West JH in Richardson. I’m an Instructional Technology Specialist. I met your team at TCEA and I’m a fan of your EdTech Badge 2.0 Program #Prosper4ward
A1: Such a great question! I like doing PBLs, Genius Hour projects, Book Clubs, SSR Book Projects, or I ask the kids what's a project they would like to do. We also do portfolio projects. #Prosper4ward
A1 Start a project just before the state test. Treat test as unwelcome interruption (this part is not difficult). Post-test: pick up where you left off. Momentum keeps kids focused on learning.
#Prosper4ward
A1: Having just covered the probability unit, we have students create their own games of chance, with a team. They must plan, create, test, and revise their games throughout the week. They love getting to use their creativity and playing everyone’s games! #prosper4ward@PISDLiT
Oh my! Do we have the @ProsperRogersMS teacher of the year joining us tonight?!?!? Congrats! We are glad that you are joining us tonight. #Prosper4ward
A1 Looking forward to hearing everyone's answers. I always did a big project - performance of some sort - as a theatre teacher. The problem was when one kid in a group didn't show up, and he was the lead in their play! #Prosper4ward
A1: It’s not easy! Give them a meaningful real life project that they can apply the year’s skills. The more relevant and applicable the assignment is, the more buy in you’ll get. #Prosper4ward
A1 Sometimes hard to plan collaborative activities EoY when Ss are in and out of class for assorted activities. Frustrating for Ss when half their group is gone on a field trip. #prosper4ward
A1: Let's face it, kids are squirrely at the end of the year. SO... let them move around, flexible seating, give them choice in their assignments, let them explore their interests, and let them talk aka collaborate! #prosper4ward
A1: I make sure to keep my interest up as well. If they see me fading, they will too. Making room for more choice, exploration, and extension helps keep things new and fun - if it isn't successful - try something new! #prosper4ward
A1: DISCUSSION. DISCUSSION. DISCUSSION. We get to read 1984 during the last quarter of school in British Lit and dannnnng there is a lot of fodder in that for discussion! #Prosper4ward#SeniorsLOVEtoTalk
This is so true! I try not to fight the tide; instead, we have to go with the flow! If the kids are chatty, I give them group work with purposeful talk. #prosper4ward
A1. I find that changing the type of tech used helps too. When the kids start getting "Nearpoded" out, switch to Google Slides, have them make a Flipgrid to teach others, etc. #prosper4ward
A1 I love to increase movement in the room as the end get closer (stations, games, class in a larger space like the gym or library). I also like to post more open ended challenges that don’t have one answer...something completely opposite of testing. #prosper4ward
A1: I hope the same way I keep them engaged throughout the year. I stay excited, positive and keep setting the bar high. Also with different types of engaging lessons. For example the @breakoutEDU the great @LibraryHutt@mzweberreads, and @jetteachestech helped us with this week
A1: I try to change things up more towards the end of the year to try to keep them interested. Provide even more choice and let the students become the teacher.
#Prosper4ward
Building relationships with your students and having highly engaging lessons that students want to work on can help keep the learning going. Also having an inviting, fun and light classroom environment. #prosper4ward
Yes!!!! I always try to save at least one of my "favorite" lessons for the end of the year to give kids and me something to look forward to #prosper4ward
Lauren Santarelli - 8th Grade U.S. History teacher and coach at @PISDReynolds 🦅 I’m excited to participate in my first twitter chat tonight! #prosper4ward
That is awesome, if you want some @TalonTechPHS students to give those games a try, let me know, your Ss games reaching outside to the HS could be cool for them #prosper4ward

A1: My goal is to plan assignments/projects that are meaningful. I want students to be excited to learn and create until the last day possible! #Prosper4ward
This is a great point! @MsKopeck and I were talking about that today with Kahoot. Kids love Kahoot, but not if every teacher plays it every week for review. #prosper4ward
A2 Thinking of re-sharing all of our study guides from this past year and having Ss develop/record mini-lessons and study resources that could be linked to them. Review for this year AND pre-planning for next year. #Prosper4ward
A2: I actually just tried my "something new" and had a class discussion entirely online using https://t.co/vsGq10U62l and it was GREAT! Every single kid in the room "got a voice"! I'll be using it again very soon! #Prosper4ward
A2: I'm always looking for new things to try! I want to incorporate more student voice and choice in class design. I want to use their SSR book more than I currently do. I want to perfect Lit Circles #Prosper4ward
A2: I’m a first year librarian, so everything is new :) PHS Teachers, come see me, I would love to help you implement or find new things to try in your classroom. #Prosper4ward
A2: I tried my first differentiated google form and want to try to incorporate more of those before the end of the year. Maybe even try a @MrHaney17 quest! #prosper4ward
A:1 I think offering students authentic opportunities to apply their knowledge is a great way to keep them engage! However finding ways to relate and structure content to apply to the life of 13 year old can be challenging! But it’s worth it! #prosper4ward@PISDLiT
A2. Looking forward to @mandyatschool helping us use the CBR motion detectors with the TI's! Students will be able to graph their rate of change in real time! #prosper4ward
A2 Student-chosen book clubs are in my future, and I can't wait! But I'd also love do get skype in the classroom, lit trips, more redefinition level stuff! #prosper4ward
It is essentially like a chat room (I know, I know... soooooooo 90s) and so I put the kids in groups (because 36 kids in one chat room makes the convo go too fast) and then I posted questions and they... discussed! #Prosper4ward
A2: I just completed my first HyperDoc lesson plan! The students loved it and it allowed my advance students to work ahead and allowed me to help students who needed more support. #Prosper4ward
A2: where do I begin??? Honestly I would like to do more redefinition with contact with others...I really want my 2nd graders to flipgrid and do a q and a with third graders about what to expect next year!!
A2: I want to try Google's Open Online Education Course Builder. I think this would be a great way for students to self-pace learning standards and for teachers to assess for intervention and extension. #prosper4ward
A2: I am very fascinated by VR and AR through Google Expeditions. I would love to curate a library of VR field trips to various locations around Texas, exploring curriculum related topics to bring real-life to the classroom. #prosper4ward
A2: I would like to have my Ss discuss more. We had a performance task today that allowed them discussion time before answering the questions and I heard lots of great things even from students that usually are very quiet and reserved. #prosper4ward
Well, I let them still talk a bit off to the side some... it was reallllly an interesting way to see who was a verbal learner... they couldn't type fast enough to keep up with their ideas! #Prosper4ward
A2: I have approximately 1.5 million activities bookmarked on @Desmos that I want to use before the year over. I would also like to make my own using their Activity Builder @PISDLiT#prosper4ward
A2: I want to participate in a @Flipgrid "chat". I have never participated in a Flipgrid outside of PISD.
I also want to host a webinar, HEY WAIT! I am on March 29 with @nearpod !! #prosper4ward
I learned it from @ShakeUpLearning! You can use videos and links to Google Slides to differentiate your students learning. You can change multiple choice questions to send students to different sections of a form! I'll tag you in her post about it! #prosper4ward
A2: Pear deck! I’ve seen it and played with it a little, time to try it out! Also Kahoot has homework challenges now, it might be good to try that out especially this time of year!
#Prosper4ward
Absolutely! I can also share the transcripts which I downloaded afterward and shared in Google Classroom so they could use them as they write their essays over the same topics we discussed. #Prosper4ward
A2: I would like to try to implement a digital break out lesson or scavenger hunt for my kids to complete on the topic of U.S. History. I think the problem solving and fun nature of these lessons will build both engagement and 21st century skills! #prosper4ward@PISDLiT
A3: I LOVE Genius Hour, and if you haven't tried it, please consider it! You will see truly engaged kids. I loved seeing kids' presentations and learning right along side them. I thought it was awesome that my kids became an expert in something I wasn't. #Prosper4ward
A3: @TalonTechPHS has 20% time as part of what they do, we have had students do projects on things like dress code changes, parking lot changes, and communication, their next step is to present their findings #prosper4ward
A3: @CockrellChamps is leading the way with Genius Hour! Still perfecting it, but it's definitely getting there! Props to the staff and admin team there! Teaching those soft skills that are sometimes hard to teach in the traditional classroom setting. #Prosper4ward
A3: I have done it in the past, but I haven't tried it this year yet. We did a mini version with our research projects though. Instead of the typical animal research project, students had free choice! #prosper4ward
A3: I have not but I have seen @TalonTechPHS participate in it this year. They work on things that can make PHS better. What a great opportunity for them to explore something that is important to them! #Prosper4ward
A3 We wrote 20% Time into our Google elective at the middle schools. I went and saw some presentations in @RMSmrsDraeger 's class, and it was very cool. I'd like to go back and see more! #Prosper4ward
I'm super intrigued by it... I need a good rubric for it- anyone got one? Those high school seniors are very attentive to making sure there is an equitable GPA! :) #Prosper4ward
A3: @mskopeck and I did it a few years ago with our students and it was a major success. Ss are doing it in their other classes now (which is awesome!) so we are searching for ways to enhance this idea and project. (Beyond just giving them more time in our classes) #prosper4ward
A3: my Rucker tech agents get genius hour(30min) to come up presentations and dig into using tech in cool ways. I see it being used more in the near future #prosper4ward
No I have not had the opportunity to try Genius Hour/20% Time with students. I did learn first hand about 20% Time during my Dynamic Learning Project Summer Institute at Google in Mountain View last summer. I do know teachers that do Genius Hour and they love it. #prosper4ward
You have the kids develop an EQ on something they want to learn more about. The research and present their findings to the class. THat is the short version. #prosper4ward
It is cool, I purposely worked it into the @TalonTechPHS routine to see what the student saw as important and it has opened my eyes to the way they think #prosper4ward
A3: Unfortunately I didn't have a change to try 20% with my students. I wish I did! I have so many ideas for how this could work! Let me know if anyone is interested collaborating! #prosper4ward
A4 Ss became Superheroes of weathering, erosion, and deposition. They created stories about how they saved their Ts from the evil Dr Meany by controlling wind, water and ice. #prosper4ward
A4: I have enjoyed watching @mzweberreads and @LibraryHutt create breakouts for Ss and their too cool attitude changing into fun and enjoyment about learning, magical transformation #Prosper4ward
A4: My students and I just did persuasive debates and it was amazing! The kids were paired up, they picked a topic and a side, and threw it down this week! It was fun and interesting to see how they handled it. #Prosper4ward
A4: I am loving @BreakoutEDU! We have done physical boxes and tried digital for the first time today. The kids are always engaged and become extremely competitive. PHS Teachers - come see @dcweber and me to plan one for your kids! #Prosper4ward
A4: kids created and shared storyboards they created over WWI and WWII then gave feedback on accuracy and inaccuracy when having to make it in animated form #prosper4ward
A4: I made an activity where Ss collected data through a dice rolling game, created a visual display, and used statistics vocabulary in typed responses to explain their findings. Their conversations were so meaningful and they had a lot of fun #prosper4ward#dotplotscanbefun
A4: My kiddos have loved creating their Poetry Books in @BookCreatorApp. Tomorrow they got to have Poetry Cafe and share....gonna add the videos to a discovery grid for @Flipgrid...then others can learn from them! #prosper4ward
A4: I recently asked students to create memes to provide me feedback on learning a new software. The students loved it! I enjoyed seeing them laugh to tell their story. They now have asked for a weekly meme warm up. #Prosper4ward
A4 I've seen lots of great stuff this year. One was seeing actual animals come to visit @tharkey and the Light Farms Library, and see kids get to ask questions and actually meet the animals. Not sure that this can be duplicated, but it was engaging without doubt! #Prosper4ward
A4 I've been really happy with how Socratic Seminars have gone in my class this year. Ss not participating verbally have participated via Google Docs and padlet. #prosper4ward
A4: @breakoutEDU is starting to take-off on my campus. Actually I'm working with a teacher that is doing one tomorrow on Greek Roots. The Breakout EDU website has a pretty good library of ready made breakout lessons or you can create your own. #prosper4ward
A4: the geometry team tried both and digital and regular @breakoutEDU . Another activity we did was a review maze. This allowed students to move from task to task and had a QR code they could scan to check answers. Kids loved it. #noworksheet#prosper4ward
A4. We had the students create a collaborative review on Google Slides. They really took ownership of the project and each slide had creative and different ideas. #prosper4ward
A4: @educatorcher ROCKS @Flipgrid in her classroom. She is the queen of engaging lessons! I've copied lots of ideas from her and am so lucky to teach with her! #prosper4ward
My Ss just got done creating original habitats to learn about adaptations, life cycles, food webs and more. They used sites, slides, videos, at codes, hp reveal and more to have interactive presentations that cover all that information #prosper4ward
A4: During a novel study, I had Ss work in groups to create a map using text evidence of the setting. They first created the map on grid paper & then chose an aspect of the map to create a 3D model in SketchUp. Ss loved working hands on with the text! #prosper4ward
I saw some awesome ways to incorporate student writing with slides at #TCEA with @alicekeeler! It could easily be adapted to other subject areas. #prosper4ward

Wow, what a great chat tonight. Thanks to everyone for participating. Prosper peeps - don't forget to sign up for PD credit. #prosper4wardhttps://t.co/tZwVSudc6j
Recently had a science class research & create web pages for energy resources that include a Ss created celebrity commercial promoting it. Posted to a padlet and collaborated virtually with another Irving MS. #Prosper4ward
We did our first digital today and our kids said the physical was more fun...although they were still highly engaged! I love the idea of a combo between the 2! #prosper4ward
A4: Our @PISDReynolds U.S. History team had put together a number of engaging activities! We have done Socratic Seminars, Political Party Debates, Crime Scene Investigations and now we are working on a Shark Tank pitch! I’m feeling like Genius hour is next! #prosper4ward@PISDLiT
A4: Pre-AP ELAR is currently working on a debate project. The students to seem to really love being able to research topics that have an effect on them. Nice job ELAR teachers! @EdBeyondCliches@ShawnaEaston03#Prosper4ward@PISDLiT
Great chat team! I really appreciate the wealth of resources that were shared tonight! Let's make sure we reach out to each other and continue collaborating! #prosper4ward
I was thinking @PISDLiT that we should have a Twitter chat during a prof dev day next year… it would be a good way to introduce the experience to teachers who haven't tried it yet. 😊 #Prosper4ward
