#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
I always start with seesaw and then ease into google drive. In my daily 5 rotation, one center is called the “Digital Drive Desk” where students solely work on adding to and organizing their drives! Come check it out! #owlsome@OakviewElem
Wow! Luckily power here has held! It’s been freezing here- not compared to temps in Canada I know but for here it’s cooold! New appreciation! #kinderchat

A1 Encouraging reading/labelling of our writing using invented spelling and simple sentences; confession: I don't really do specific reading skills in a specific way #kinderchat
It is amazing how we take our power for granted. My bother & sister-in-law were out for five days! At least they have fireplaces to heat their home. #kinderchat

A1: we are hunting for letters we know in morning message, tried making a W in our cornmeal plates, explored the letter things in the sand table, talked and talked and talked, and brainstormed what we know about winter. #kinderchat
A1: Not currently in a classroom but most of those I tutor K-1 are struggling with phonemic awareness. Currently trying segmenting and break down activities and games. #conversechat#kinderchat
A1: we are also hearing a lot of stories, working on "reading and writing" direction by singing songs and doing poems together, reading and writing our friends' names. #kinderchat
Hi #kinderchat. Just stopping in to say hello and hope you all had a good holiday. In preschool we talk, sing, and play our way through the day. That’s our literacy goals one hundred percent.
Q2: What specific printing (making letters with a pencil) skills are your students working on right now? #kinderchat (Not to be confused w/writing skills, in next Q!)
I find that putting an action to a sound really does the trick w the strugglers! Used to be a program “sounds of success” that matched sound w motion #kinderchat that’s what I use!
A2 We are always trying to strengthen our fingers, hands, and arms by doing lots of play dough, Lego, blocks, hanging from the monkey bars etc. And a tiny bit of HWT #kinderchat
A2: We got out the white plasticine today to make snowmen. The kids were concerned that it was so "hard", but I told them we were exercising our finger muscles. We also haven't used pencils yet, just felta, crayons, sticks, fingers. #kinderchat
A2: I'm working on focusing on sentences; one uppercase letter to begin and the rest lowercase. Also, one uppercase letter in first and last name. #kinderchat
That’s what I used when I was in kinder. They use a different program now. Not sure how I feel about it since I really haven’t seen it in action. #kinderchat
We do something like that too, but there is a song for each letter. Both programs I use are Canadian which I LOVE! Zed and zee are both options in the programs. :) #kinderchat

This is where we really start to see how expectations vary from region-region: January printing work ranges from playdough to printing sentences... #Kinderchat
Agreed but I think having these literacy opportunities available to all kids from September is my goal to provide differentiation and individualization too #kinderchat
The pre-kindergarten program I worked for used that and I did like it. Unfortunately, kindergarten has a different budget and no access to the program :(. #kinderchat
I agree that differentiation is important. I think that's where the "playful explorations" is great. Kids who are ready to write can write, and the ones who are not, don't have to feel the pressure. #kinderchat
I wasn't sure about guided drawing at first, either, but also came to love it. Builds so much confidence in their own drawing skills, PLUS the visual-motor practice! #Kinderchat

We start from September as well, but ease in with lots of small motor activities to support the use of pencil and paper tasks when the time comes. #kinderchat
A3: we are starting "planning". When you ask me if you can build a snowman trap, please take this clipboard, paper, felt and plan it out for me. Kids can label, draw, add words, letters. #kinderchat
I’ve noticed that the kinder teachers have incorporated that in their classrooms. I had similar concerns but am more comfortable with the concept #kinderchat
A3 we are working on phonics and encoding - which is A LOT of skills, including sound segmenting. I blogged about my shared writing at htto://misslaidlaw.blogspot.com... Ive noticed big changes in their independence and interest in writing. Ontario K program here. #kinderchat
A3: we are starting a journal tomorrow. Draw me a picture, what can you say about it. It's very informal, and I might encourage those who are ready to print initial sounds, initial and end, or any "eyeball" words they say. #kinderchat
A3 Writers workshop part of literacy program. I’ve seen less rigidity in following it to the “letter of the law” so to speak. Which makes sense to me. So they’re writing, illustrating and making books #kinderchat
I need to get more of that going this year. Last years crew was ALL over that jam. Being part time in my class has definitely changed some of what I can do. #kinderchat
A4: Our math curriculum spirals. We had been working with patterns but now we're into partner numbers for addition. Today we looked at partners of 6. #kinderchat
A4 in the Ontario Kindergarten program, we work on all strands through inquiry and play all the time (actually, there are no strands - it is all in "Demonstrating Math and Literacy Behaviours"). Always try to work in provocations to match numerals with quantities.
#kinderchat
Interestingly this group is not into "writing". The creation station is not used as much as last years. But their interest in reading things is HIGH. I love seeing how different each class is! #kinderchat

We are starting our formal "numeracy" period. We do math "play" every morning where students have materials they can create with and we always highlight math talk during this time. Now we are doing some "lessons" on number. #kinderchat
I love your curriculum and documention report cards. I looked at a lot of Ontario's stuff for early learning and fell in love with the focus on play! #kinderchat
A5 Varies depending on each child's needs. Naming our emotions, showing empathy, and independently solving social challenges (like sharing a preferred toy, # of kids in an area, accidents) are always a focus. #kinderchat
A4? 5? I lost track. We are working a lot this year on kindness and how do we react when angry or disappointed. Emotions has been a huge topic this year for my group, so we continue to discuss how even when angry, we cannot be physical. #kinderchat
A5 I’ve been thinking of perspective and realize some things need to be looked at from another’s perspective. So hard for kids (adults too). I blogged about it. May help lead to #empathy and understanding #kinderchat
LOL! My goal for 2018 was leave school by 4:00 at I already flipped atvthat today! Got busy cleaning a cupboard and left at 4:30! I'll manage to NOT be the last teacher at school yet! #kinderchat
